Observed every November, American Diabetes Month is animportant element in the American Diabetes Association’s effortsto focus our nation’s attention on disease and the tens of millionsof people affected by it.There are many myths about diabetes that make it difficult forpeople to believe some of the hard facts – such as diabetes is aserious and potentially deadly disease.
Myth: People with diabetes need to follow a special diet.Fact: People with diabetes benefit from the same healthy diet thatis good for everyone else.
Myth: Diabetes is not a serious disease.Fact: Diabetes is a growing epidemic with a devastating physical,emotional and financial on our country.
Myth: People with diabetes can’t gettattoos.Fact: It is considered safe, as long asyour diabetes is well controlled.Myth: People with diabetes are morelikely to get colds and otherillnesses.Fact: You are no more likely to getsick, but an illness can make yourdiabetes more difficult to control.
Myth: It’s possible to have “just a touch” or a “little diabetes”.Fact: There is no such thing. Everyone who has diabetes runs therisk of serious complications.

Diabetes Awareness Month: Myths or Facts
Chocolate Pecan Pie• 1/2 cup margarine, melted
• 1 cup light corn syrup
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 4 eggs
• 1 cup chopped pecans
• 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single
crust pie
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a heavy
saucepan combine melted margarine,
corn syrup, white sugar and cocoa.
Cook over low heat, stirring constantly,
until sugar dissolves. Add vanilla, salt
and eggs, stirring well. Stir in 1/2 cup
pecans. Mix well.
Pour filling into unbaked pastry shell
and top with remaining 1/2 cup pecans.
Bake for 55 minutes. Let cool and serve.
