Later in this newsletter you will read about the study with Macquarie University Promoting Healthy Responses to Stress. Involvement in this study is a DEED to show our commitment to being proactive in supporting young women to be strong and resilient. We are not participating in this survey because of any problem here at Riverside with anxiety amongst our students. In fact, surveys show our students are below the national average when it comes to self reports of anxiety and stress. We are participating because the results are likely to have a lasting impact across the world in reducing stress amongst young women. This is a good DEED rather than just SAYING that we are concerned about how young women react to demands on them in today’s world. We are also the only public school in the international study and we are always proud to advance public education and its commitment to ‘students first. I look forward to hearing your comments at the next P and C meeting. We also celebrate our great HSC results. At the recent assembly, we broadened the invitees from students achieving over 90 ATAR to include students who achieved their personal best. They too met our school’s high expectations. We celebrated those students who have excitedly told us that they have achieved their dream and are able to study what they want at uni or have achieved a work placement extraordinaire. By celebrating personal best at the Distinguished Achievers Assembly we are supporting our vision: Together students, teachers and parents will develop a school culture where achieving personal best is recognised and the use of the imagination, of reflection and of being challenged is valued. This assembly was the highlight of February. It is important for teachers to see excited, happy, confident young women entering the real world, so well prepared, knowledgeable and positive, is what makes the job of being a teacher, and also my job, the best in the world. Outstanding HSC results

The Distinguished Achievers’ Assembly was a celebration of our high achieving students such as the equal dux, Sarah and Madeleine who with 98.6 have been accepted into their first choice university courses at UNSW, Commerce/Arts and Advanced Mathematics, respectively. Elisa achieved 98.5 and won a scholarship to ANU in Canberra to study Arts/Law.

Seventeen students achieved an ATAR over 90 (>12% of the cohort) and twenty students achieved one or more band 6 results (67 in total across 29 courses). Emma with 94.95 was awarded a Bachelor of Accounting scholarship at UTS. Because of her outstanding Economics results, Emma will also complete an internship with the sponsoring firm, “Account Cooperative". Accelerated students also performed well in 2013 HSC. As they enjoy studying in 2014, they can reflect on the results they already have on the board for the HSC – Lucy for her Band 5 in Dance and Esther and Anne who achieved Band 6 in the Information Technology exam as part of their Certificate II VET course studied with Ms Wark. he students in this accelerated course filled the stage as they achieved five times the State average in Band 6 and had ten students in Band 5. This was a true example of personal best and the school supporting students with particular talents and interests through curricular offerings.

The Swimming Carnival

The annual Swimming Carnival commenced the first of Riverside’s 2014 sporting events. Held at Drummoyne Swimming Centre, the day was filled with excitement and fun, featuring four various colourful themes, Harry Potter (Coen), Hawaiian (Mallinson), Disney (O’Harris) and Under the Sea (Mckenzie). Well done to all girls who participated throughout the day, and to those who have qualified into the next round. Congratulations to Sophie Taylor who once again took out the Champion of the School race. Good luck to those representing Riverside in the upcoming Zone Swimming Carnival. Under 15 Netball Team On Tuesday 25

th February 2014 the Under 15 Netball

Team travelled to Bateau Bay on the Central Coast for their round 5 knockout competition game against Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College. The competition commenced in Term 4 2013 and the Girls had all been eagerly awaiting to play this game. The team consisted of Chloe Davis, Nicola Schubert, Lauren Flack, Abby Flockton, Sophie Macpherson, Kate Masters, Jane Hill, Ebony Burnard, Jadine Zajic, Sophie Kevern, and Umpire Georgia Bousfield. Riverside took an early lead over Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College during the first quarter. Our mid

court players worked well to drive forward onto the ball and pressured the other team, causing many turnovers. This continued throughout the game. Our defence was secure, and players worked together to intercept the ball and take any back line passes with success. Our shooters performed exceptionally well and were able to score some very quick goals from all areas of the circle. The score at the end of the 4

th quarter was 35-21

Riverside’s way. The Girls played exceptionally well as a team and with determination and enthusiasm. Considering they hadn’t played together since Term 4 2013. We will find out in early March who we will play in our round 6 team. We wish the team all the best for its next game. Ms Catterall

Ex – Student (Class of 2012) Wins Soccer Scholarship to U.S.

Abigail Bradshaw was a very active member of the 2012 graduating year. She excelled in volley ball, athletics and soccer and was successful in achieving a place at The Australian College of Physical education to study P.E.

Abigail and Ms Andrews

Football NSW targets football clubs to offer players the chance to apply for scholarships to study and play soccer in the United States. Abigail applied and was successful. She leaves in a few weeks to take up her scholarship at Jamestown Community College in New York State. She will be away for four years and when she recently came into school to tell Ms Andrews (PE Head Teacher) she was very excited about the opportunity to live, study and explore in the United States. Abigails’s success is a great example to all students. She has achieved this opportunity as much through her involvement in sport and community activities as through her academic results. We all wish her well in her new adventure and hope to be able to report on her experiences in future newsletters.

Making connections through a welcome BBQ Over 250 parents, siblings and friends of our new year 7 students joined teachers and the welfare team for the year 7 welcome BBQ. It was a glorious night and an opportunity for parents to meet the teachers and get to know the year adviser, Ms Lisa Trapnell from the Maths faculty, a little more. Ms Trapnell had this to say about being Year 7 Adviser 2014: * It is a privilege to be an integral part in the girls' lives as they take their journey to becoming young ladies * I love getting to know students finding out about the differences as well as the similarities that we may have. * I want to make a difference and have never been accused of sitting back doing nothing * Being a caring, fun, fair but firm person is who I am and I believe these qualities are essential for this role. We have had such a great start to this year and the girls should be given credit for their adjustment to high school life. When we work together, we grow together, lets see how tall we can become.

My Restaurant Rules Year 8 Technology Mandatory students have begun a new unit called My Restaurant Rules. The design brief for the assessment task in this unit is as follow: You are a restaurateur keen to entice potential customers and improve business. Design and make relevant materials required for the promotion and effective operation of your restaurant. This includes the demonstration of a signature dish that sets your restaurant apart from others. Here are some pictures of our first Riverside celebrities:

CAPA Column The creative and performing arts of Riverside has well and truly kicked off with the band and string group having had several rehearsals already, dance auditions well underway for the show group ensembles, the formation of the new woodwind quartet which is so exciting and of course the planning and preparation for the upcoming Riverside production for 2014, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For this year’s play there will be many speaking positions on offer and don’t worry if that is not your cup of tea, you have the option to fulfil your lifelong aspirations of playing the thrilling part of an oompa loompa. Acceptance into this year’s play is by audition only. For the last few years I have taken part in the plays and musicals here at Riverside on violin and I have to say it has been such a great experience. To work so hard in all the rehearsals leading up to the week of shows then delivering an outstanding performance loved by all is honestly the best feeling. On a different note, I will be organising the performances for school assemblies this year. So if anyone is interested in performing whether you’re an actor, singer, dancer or instrumentalist please come and let me know. Thank you! Karen Kong – Performance Captain

2014 Wingara Mura Bunga Barrabugu Summer

Program at the University of Sydney

During the summer break, Taymarra (Year 10) attended the Wingara Mura Bunga Barrabugu Summer Program at the University of Sydney. 220 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from all over Australia joined Taymarra which involved daily faculty-based and career-oriented activities, balanced with fun evening activities on campus and around Darling Harbour. Here’s what Taymarra had to say about it: Camp was absolutely amazing! The people were really genuine nice people, food was great, night time

activities were so fun and I actually learnt a fair bit. I fully recommend the program to all Aboriginal students and I definitely want go next year. I even got to graduate with the hats and everything! The programs project officer, Bianca Williams said the students were attentive, involved and excited about pursuing tertiary education. They were engaged and willing to meet new people and embrace new experiences. We are very proud of Taymarra for getting involved in the program. Go to the ABCs 7.30 Report ‘Summer camp aims to lift Indigenous uni enrolments’ http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2013/s3927026.htm and see if you can spot Taymarra!

Social Inc

Marusha (Year 12) will be leading a team of students to run an exciting new program called SOCIAL INC. What is Social Inc you may ask? Social Inc is an innovative program for high schools developed to try and overcome the stigma and social disadvantage around disability. It is a program to help change the perception of disability by active social networks, awareness and engagement. Ms Kelly has endorsed the program to make Riverside the most socially inclusive high school in Australia where everyone is made to feel special, welcomed and included. The Social Inc team will be introducing the program to students at the next assembly. In the meantime, learn more about the program by visiting http://www.socialinc.org.au. We want to know what all members of the school community think, so please complete the survey that will guide the team’s action areas at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NEWSocialIncAnnualInclusionSurvey2014 If you would like to know how you could become a member of the team have a chat with Marusha, Lena, Hintha or Taymarra.

Promoting healthy responses to stress:

A research project run in partnership with the Centre for Emotional Health and Queenwood School for Girls. The Centre for Emotional Health at Macquarie University will commence a 4 year project in partnership with Riverside Girls High School in 2014. This project has received funding through a national research grant. It is an exciting opportunity for Riverside students to be a part of a study aimed at understanding the development of anxiety and depression in young women. As a part of the project, the team from the Centre for Emotional Health would like to seek your opinions and support at the P&C meeting on the 12th March. The project has 4 components:

Collection of genetic data

Completion of yearly surveys and brief computer tasks

Request for parents to complete a short yearly survey on their daughter’s emotional health

Provision of a school-wide program run by a psychologist to promote adaptive responses to stress.

Members of the research team will attend the P&C meeting on the 12th March. They will also run an information evening at the school at the end of Term 1 (date to be advised). Research team members to attend the meeting include: Professor Jennie Hudson: Jennie is the lead investigator on the project. Big Science Competition

In 2014, the Science Department will provide an opportunity for science students to challenge themselves in the Big Science Competition. Questions test students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as their science knowledge.

The Big Science Competition will be held in school between 21 and 28 May 2014. This one-hour international competition is open to students of all abilities at three different levels: Junior (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) and Senior (Years 11 and 12). Each student who takes part will receive a certificate as well as detailed feedback on their performance in the competition. They also go into a draw to win hundreds of iTunes and movie vouchers. Our school will receive a comprehensive report for each paper level showing how each student performed on each question, the percentage of students in the cohort who answered correctly, and a comparison with the national results. The Big Science Competition is organised by Australian Science Innovations, a non-profit organisation committed to providing high quality science extension programs that inspire, challenge and raise the aspirations of students in science.
