As your president for Playgoers’ Riverhead Theatre 2010/11 season, it gives me great pleasureand much pride to present the forthcoming programme. If you are a “regular” you will see itfollows our tried and trusted recipe of something for everybody and if you are a very welcomenewcomer, I am quite sure there will be something to tickle your theatrical palate. We offerdrama, comedy, a musical, a pantomime and dance as part of our in-house programme, whileour external productions include touring professional companies, youth theatre and bands. Please come and try it, I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. Whether you just want towatch productions or if you would like to get involved in any of the many aspects of running asemi-professional theatre, you will be most welcome at the Riverhead.

I joined the company at the end of the war in 1946. In those days we read plays in church hallsand it was not unusual to have more people on stage than in the audience, but over the last 60years, the combined efforts of Playgoers have reaped their just reward and we now work in a£2.5 million theatre complex. The building is used almost every day during the year and lastseason we had approximately 20,000 people through the door.

The ‘Riverhead’ is one of a number of new, or improved leisure buildings in Louth which haveappeared over the last few years, helping to make our town an ideal place in which to live. TheMeridian Sports Centre, The Museum, Spout Yard and other projects on the way, all contributeso much to our lives and Playgoers are very proud to be part of this recreational renaissance.

I am looking forward to meeting you over the next year and will be in the foyer before curtainup on most evenings, and will welcome the opportunity to talk to you. In the meantime, couldyou do something for me? Please tell people about Playgoers as your recommendation is byfar the best publicity we can get. Welcome to the Riverhead Theatre, and I hope you enjoymany, many happy evenings with us.

Written by the creators, Jeremy Lloyd and DavidCroft, of the original successful TV comedy series.Non-stop double-entendres as the well known staffof Grace Brothers prepare firstly for a sale ofGerman goods and then depart for their staffholiday at a one-star hotel in Spain.

Are You Being Served? features humour based onsexual innuendo, misunderstandings, mistakenidentity and occasional slapstick. It was originallybroadcast on television from 1972 to 1985, set in theLadies and Gents departments of Grace Brothers, alarge, fictional London department store.

The TV show will be remembered for its prolific useof double entendres. In addition there were sightgags generated by outrageous costumes which thecharacters were sometimes required to wear forstore promotions, and gaudy store displaysfrequently featuring malfunctioning roboticmannequins.

The main humorous base of the series was amerciless parody of the British class system. Thispermeated almost every interaction and wasespecially evident in the conversations between themaintenance men and the ostensibly higher-classstore personnel.

Henrik Ibsen’s most iconic and famed play, A Doll’s House charts the final days of Nora Helmer’smarriage, and her life as a wife and mother. As theChristmas spirit settles comfortably across the land,Nora and her husband Torvald have the perfect life. Hehas recently been promoted; she has a most beautifulnew home in which to raise her family. But in this world, happiness cannot last for long, as secrets and blackmailsoon threaten to shatter the calm of their marriage, andNora finds herself trapped by the bonds of her love forher husband, and the expectations laid upon her bymodern society. As time runs out for Nora, she mustmake a terrifying decision to save herself and to right thewrongs that those around her have perpetrated. Liftingthe lid on conventional romance in Victorian marriage, A Doll’s House tells a startlingly honest tale of one individual’s struggle for the ultimate right: her own freedom. In a searing new version by criticallyacclaimed London playwright Venetia Twigg, Ibsen’sclassic is adapted for a 21st century audience, withupdated dialogue and a bold new vision of delicate loveand bloated hypocrisy, whilst keeping the poignant heartof this classic drama alive.

Don & Shirley Weston have come to the ScardaleHall Health Hydro to relax, pamper themselvesand possibly, just possibly, rescue their ailingmarriage. Don proves himself hilariouslyincompetent at step aerobics, squash and slideaerobics, and his experiences with colour therapyand massage are far from positive too. Is theWestons’ week doomed?

The rifts in the marriage widen as Don’s mid-lifecrisis becomes more and more evident, andmoments of reconciliation – a midnight feast, forexample – do little to improve the situation.

A popular play for all Godber fans, darklyamusing, perceptive and troubling, Gym and Tonicis a comedy with real bite.
