Faith Healer is widely recognised as one of the masterpieces of Ireland’s greatest living playwright.Frank is a faith healer. Traveling with his two companions, Grace and Teddy, he roams Scotland and Wales healing the sick. By the edge of forests, at the base of mountains, in remote coastal

villages, the lame, the ill and the broken hearted gather for the Fantastic Francis Hardy: Faith Healer. But who is Frank? Are his miracles real or imaginary? And what is the true price the saved must

pay? Haunting, tender and passionate, Faith Healer takes us into the heart of what it means

to believe. As we are drawn deeper into the world of Frank and his companions, our certainties fall away as we are led towards the play’s magisterial, unforgettable climax. This new production of Brian Friel’s masterpiece is directed by Andrew Flynn.

Starting out as a stage play written by Richard Harris, “Stepping Out” has now blossomed into a full-scale musical. This delightfully funny story about a group of would-be tap-dancers being cajoled and coerced into a polished troupe of performers is a joy to watch. The ups and downs of rehearsals and the various idiosyncrasies of the ladies - and of course the one man - make for a free-flowing and highly entertaining show. You won’t want to miss this one! “Stepping Out” will be directed by award winning Mona Conroy with Deirdre Browne as choreographer who has the unenviable task of trying to get the cast tapping. A remarkable triple bill of songwriters who share a musical journey and friendship featuring Choice Music Prize winner Adrian Crowley and acclaimed Scottish songsmiths James Yorkston and Alasdair Roberts.

Crowley’s Season Of The Sparks was a languorously melodic piece of work, recalling Bill Callahan, Robert Wyatt and Leonard Cohen. Adrian is currently recording his new album.

Yorkston’s ruminations on love, lust, longing and liquor share a more eternal, resigned, Celtic feel with the battered reflections of Jacques Brel and Bert Jansch than any of his contemporaries. Over four albums of flinty beauty Yorkston has established a canon as singular and intimate as any current songwriter. James has just published his first book, Its Lovely To Be Here - The Touring Diaries of a Scottish Gent.

Alasdair Roberts is a Scottish singer, guitarist, interpreter of traditional songs and writer of new songs based in Glasgow. He has released three albums of original material under the name Appendix Out on Drag City, as well as five albums under his own name. Alongside collaborating with Juana Molina and Will Oldham, he has continued his exploration of folk with his latest release, Too Long In This Condition (Drag City).

Dir: Mike Mills / USA / 2010 / 105 mins / Cert: 15A Starring: Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Melanie Laurent, Goran Visnjic, Kai Lennox Language: EnglishFrom Mike Mills, the writer/director of Thumbsucker, comes a new comedic drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even in its most serious moments. Beginners unfolds through two intertwined storylines of Oliver and his father, Hal: at the age of 75, shortly after the death of his wife, Hal came out of the closet and gleefully embraced his senior bon vivant lifestyle: hitting the clubs, buying a new wardrobe, and, eventually, dating a new boyfriend half his age. The soul of Beginners is the father and son relationship. It is pure joy. Plummer and McGregor perform an acting dance that is equally as exquisite as it is endearing. The two actors play off each other in their scenes together with called-for pensiveness and passion for getting Mills’ story right. Beginners may be a simple story, but its power is phenomenal.

A compelling cabaret-theatre show inspired by the life and music of Christie Hennessy, as told by Al Jolson. Directed by Ray Yeates. Performed by Aonghus McAnally. Musical direction by Ivan McKenna.

In WHEN JOLIE MET CHRISTIE Al Jolson speaks of his admiration for Christie and his new understanding of him now they are together in the afterlife. Al compares the struggles and triumphs of their two careers. Jolson, the controversial superstar meets the humble painter-decorator from Tralee in a 90-minute musical meditation featuring many of Christie’s greatest hits. What is the motivation behind all the great performers? And what sacrifices do they make as they try to follow their dream? This is a quirky, funny and sometimes dark meditation on the price of fame.

“This show is all heart… It’s the music that does the talking. One suspects that’s how Hennessy would have liked it” The Irish Times

“Something wicked this way comes...”Highly acclaimed Icarus Theatre Collective presents a bold and exciting performance of Shakespeare’s most bloody and fear-filled tragedy. The vicious, barbaric undercurrent in Shakespeare’s epic erupts in this kinetic, blood-thirsty production. Unrivalled on the battlefield, Macbeth is rewarded with rank and favour by a grateful king. But with each enemy Macbeth butchers to serve his own vaulting ambition, his lust for power takes a more menacing grip until he ferociously seizes the throne. But, violence breeds violence, and a reign born in blood quickly spirals out of control as Macbeth’s actions return to destroy him.Lauded as one of the most fearless and dynamic theatre companies in the UK, receiving critical accolades including Time Out’s Critics Choice, and winning awards from as far afield as Romania, this new production goes straight for the jugular. Blending traditional and inventive physical theatre techniques, original live music, evocative design, and using the original verse, this slick production is perfect for audiences new to Macbeth and those already well acquainted with Shakespeare’s tragedies.

For this exhibition Michael Fortune will present a series of photography work made with his family, which centre on the tradition of Halloween, family ritual and the decoration of their home. Every year the artists’ mother dresses up with anything that will disguise her identity, and calls to his now 99-year-old granny’s house, which is next door. Michael has been documenting this ritual, which has existed in the coastal area of Wexford since pre-Norman times, for the last 6 years and the 2011 film will be added to the show. Come along and see how the exhibition changes and maybe get some ideas on how you might dress up this year for Halloween.

Michael Fortune grew up in rural County Wexford in a family immersed in story, superstition and belief and this interest in folklore and story plays a pivotal role in his work. Due to the ethnographic nature of his practice, he has been commissioned to undertake various folklore collections on film throughout Ireland and Canada over the past decade.

For more info visit www.folklore.ie or www.michaelfortune.ie

‘Lies, Camera, Action’ is a two hour workshop which centres on superstition, belief and the re-telling of stories. Getting inspiration from the exhibition “The Fall of the Leaf”, Fortune will introduce you to various folkloric accounts, which he has collected around Ireland. After listening to these stories it is your turn to create your own tales through a series of writing and role-play exercises. You will get a chance to perform in front of the camera and see the film edited during this time. The final films will be uploaded online the following day so that you can show it to family and friends!

Dir: Semih Kaplanoglu / Germany/Turkey / 2010 / 103 Cert: CLUBLanguage: Turkish Bal(Honey) is an engrossing, award-winning story by Turkish film-maker Semih Kaplanoglu. It’s a charming and sensitive portrayal of the bond between a father and his son. Yusuf (remarkable Bora Atlas) is a shy six-year-old who struggles at school because of his stutter, and who relishes accompanying his beekeeper father Yakup (Erdal Besikcioglu) on honey-gathering trips in the nearby forest. Shot in long, fixed takes and relying on natural light and sounds, this is a beautifully photographed meditation on familial love and the mysteries of nature. Bal is a calm, contemplative and compassionate study of lost innocence. Winner - Golden Bear, Berlin Film Festival 2010

Shipwrecked is the critically acclaimed show from the innovative early music theatre group eX. Featuring an international cast including some of the world’s most celebrated trad and early music virtuosi, Shipwrecked recounts the stranger-than-fiction story of Francisco de Cuellar, a captain from the Spanish Armada shipwrecked off the coast of Ireland in 1588. A fugitive on the run from the English, de Cuellar emerges from the horrors of the drowning and slaughter of his crew mates to tell a story of his unlikely survival, his welcome by Irish chieftains, his many amorous escapades and his eventual escape. The amazing soundtrack that accompanies the show features music of the Spanish and English renaissance, rousing Irish music of the 16th century and a remarkable fusion of all these styles.

“Something akin to perfection” Jens Laurson, Playbill Arts

“First-class music making” Michael Dervan, The Irish Times

“It was very satisfying to see the enthusiastic audience, who gave a prolonged standing ovation at the end of the spectacle. Several people, who did not think they would be interested in early music, were enthralled”Michael Collins, the Irish Catholic

Where do things go when you forget them?Losha likes to collect, things that have been forgotten, insignificant things, and things that are important. She shares the memories of half remembered stories and defines the contours of unexpected worlds where only secret dreams can take you.

A delicate world of objects and poetic dance. A sensitive tale made of light and shadows.‘Losha’ is a play for family audiences.

The show has been developed as part of the Arts Council’s Theatre Maker In Residence scheme with Roscommon County Council and the Roscommon Arts Centre, under the mentorship of Charlot Lemoine from Vélo Theatre, France.

Five years, three sell-out Edinburgh Fringe shows and two best-selling books later and his audiences couldn’t be happier he’s on stage and not behind a desk. The critics have called his brand of on-the-money observational humour a form of “comedy genius” (The Irish Times). Don’t believe those snooty journalists? Come and see him now and make up your own mind.

“Side-splitting stuff.” - Metro

“Jarlath Regan may just be the most promising comedian doing the rounds. Presenting to his audience a subtle yet sublime helping of observational wit that’s both intelligent and humorous without ever sounding forced.” - The Evening Herald

Dir: Denis Villeneuve / Canada, France / 2010 / 130 mins / Cert: CLUB Language: French, ArabicTo encounter a film of heart-wrenching tragedy, mythic proportions and sweeping visual majesty is rare, but such are the riches of Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies. A striking adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad’s stage play, this intimate epic interweaves the personal, the political and the mythical to gripping effect. Following the death of their Arabic mother, Nawal (Lubna Azabal), adult Canadian twins Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin) and Simon (Maxim Gaudette) find themselves in her homeland, searching for a father they presumed was dead. Expertly shifting between present and past, writer-director Denis Villeneuve displays an impressive command of his material, patiently building up to an emotionally explosive climax. To tie in with the Halloween theme, Micheal Fortune is holding this family workshop in the ancient Halloween tradition of turnip carving. In recent decades the practice has been replaced in Ireland by the American practice of using pumpkins. The tradition was carried out in his grandmother’s home up until the mid-1980’s in which crude faces were carved out of the seasonal Irish vegetable. For this workshop he will deliver a series of workshops with adults and children where everyone who attends will produce their own scary face. Materials and carving equipment will be provided.

CONGO, AN IRIsh AFFAIRTime 8pmprice 16

Dir: Brendan Culleton & Irina Maldea / Ireland / 2010 / 80 mins / Cert: CLUBLanguage: English

Congo, An Irish Affair is a penetrating and poignant study of the Irish led 1961 UN peacekeeping mission to Katanga, a province that wanted to break-away from the newly independent Congo and the two Irishmen who were key decision makers in the country during that time, Gen. Sen McKeown, commander of the UN military force and Irish diplomat, Conor Cruise O’Brien, the UN’s civil representative in Katanga.Talking to survivors and making wonderful use of both archival footage and reconstruction, Congo, An Irish Affair pieces together the story of people asked to achieve an impossible goal. It is a searing indictment of the UN and of European attitudes to Africa but, equally, shows the hopelessness of the situation as armed factions with mutually exclusive desires slip ever closer to war. Congo, An Irish Affair is a positively charged, historical documentary and is a tragic yet timely reminder that the overused epithet ‘Never Again’ is destined to make liars of us all.

Dir: FW Murnau / Germany / 1922 / 89 mins / Cert: Club / Starring: Max Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim, Greta Schroeder, Alexander Granach and John Gottowt Language: SilentMurnau’s classic vampire movie remains one of the most poetic of all horror films. Its power derives partly from Schreck’s almost literally sub-human portrayal of the Count, resplendent with long ears and fingers and a wizened, skeletal face, partly from the sexual undercurrrents coursing through the movie which suggest that the vampire is a threat not only to bourgeois society and its emphasis upon scientific rationality, but also to the very marriage of the Harker couple. A film that survives repeated viewings.

Ravishingly colourful and textured, animation doesn’t get better than Arrietty - an adaptation of English author Mary Norton’s ‘The Borrowers’ first published in the 50s. The characters are a family of little people, about 10cm high, who live under the floorboards and ‘borrow’ all kinds of household objects from the house. One day tiny fourteen-year-old Arrietty casually meets the young Sho, a human boy who has come to convalesce in his old granny’s home, and it’s love at first sight, despite their size differences. Arrietty is simply gorgeous, embracing the ravishing colour of garden flowers, wildly sprouting vines, the perfection of a raindrop on a leaf. Animation simply doesn’t get any better than Studio Ghibli’s ravishing creation: when you have this much talent, who needs 3D?

Since winning the Choice Music Prize in 2008 for the critically acclaimed ‘Ritual’, Jape has toured extensively and has been quietly producing an array of new material, songs that have been carefully crafted and have become the best of Jape’s career.

Jape began making music in 2003. Originally started as the solo project of Richard Egan (The Redneck Manifesto, VisionAir), the band has evolved over the years into one of the most exciting live acts in the country, not to mention releasing 3 critically acclaimed albums to date - Cosmosphere, The Monkeys In The Zoo Have More Fun Than Me, and Ritual. Using an innovative mix of live instruments and hardware samplers and sequencers, the sound that Jape creates spans a range of genres and encompasses many different styles. From gothic to pop, Jape continue to surprise the listener with their eclectic blend of meticulously crafted lyrics and upbeat electronic rhythms.

“I had thought that the follow up to Ritual was finished about three times so far, but I kept getting drawn back to writing more and more songs, trying to push my songwriting as hard as I could and see how many different styles and moods I could try out, to feel out the album. Eventually, I realised that you could just keep on doing that forever so I decided it was time to start letting these songs go for a walk around the place.”

Ron and Yvonne try to manoeuvre their new caravan into position. Ron has just taken early retirement from his job as a head teacher, while his wife Yvonne is into amateur dramatics. They are, in short, middle class. All seems fine until Ron wakes from his afternoon doze to find a tatty old caravan is parked just a few feet away. As Ron and Yvonne speculate about their new ‘neighbours’, sounds coming from the newly arrived caravan suggest the mystery couple are indeed having a good time. Eventually the couple, brassy Steph and seemingly monosyllabic Grant, emerge from the caravan. They are obviously not Yvonne and Ron’s sort of people. This comedy about social class is an hilarious production from Newbridge Drama Group.

Dir: Terrence Malick / USA / 2011 / 138 mins / Cert: 12AStarring: Brad Pitt, Fiona Shaw, Jessica Chastain, Sean PennLanguage: EnglishCan film help us get closer to God? The Tree of Life is an epic poem capturing the cycle of life and the minutiae which influence the kind of people we become. In a quiet suburb in 1950s America, a family of five receive a telegram announcing the death of one of the young couple’s three sons. As the sons reach maturity, the film moves on from flashes of memory to increasingly more specific concerns which, however, are not portrayed so literally that they wouldn’t find resonance with the audience. Director and screenwriter Malick allows his characters to reflect on spiritual issues, but he also shows them in their routine environment. This sensual film is at once a broad-minded allegory about the origin of the world and a humble story which places emphasis on intimate details. Terrence Malick’s latest film is a hugely ambitious and passionate masterpiece, a contemplation of existential questions.

The hills of Ireland will soon be very much alive with the sound of Netnakisum, a young Austrian string trio brimming with attitude. If saying their name is a challenge (before you reach for the dictionary it’s the German word for street musicians – spelt backwards), be warned that this genre-busting classical/folk/whatever ensemble takes no prisoners, careering helter-skelter from Straussian waltzes and foot-stomping drinking songs to Britney Spears covers and avant-garde jazz – with a hint of yodelling thrown in for good measure, of course.

All this adds up to an exhilarating live show, but lurking behind the group’s energy and irresistible joie de vivre are three very serious and accomplished musicians (and talented singers) who have already recorded several albums together and toured extensively in Europe, America and Asia. Their tightly improvised and often highly rhythmic original compositions provide the perfect counterfoil for the fragile beauty of classics such as Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte. All in all, this is a feast for the senses.

“A group with the witty, omnivorous musicality of the Mothers of Invention, played on cello, viola and violin… their chamber-punk meets Kate Bush assault on Britney’s ‘Toxic’ ought to be a number one single throughout the civilized world” Oz Hardwick, R2 Magazine, UK, 2010

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s best known tragedies. The play, which revolves around a pair of ‘star-crossed lovers’ who fall in love against the backdrop of their families ancient feud, has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.

In this production Celbridge Youth Drama takes a new approach to this timeless love story by setting it in the 1980s. This allows scope for both the audience and the actors to explore some of the overarching social and economic issues of this decade which have a resounding echo in today’s society.

Dir: Daniel Monzon / Spain / 2009 / 112 mins / Cert: Club Language: Spanish It’s not often that a prison thriller becomes as celebrated as Spain’s Cell 211, but Daniel Monzon’s quick-thinking drama is not your average jailbreak genre movie. In this winner of eight Spanish Goya Awards, writer-director Monzon lays out a basic, albeit terrifying, premise and molds it into an intelligent story of man’s potential inhumanity. Juan Oliver is knocked unconcious during the prison tour on the day before he begins his new job as prison officer. He is rushed to the empty cell 211 and left to come around. Meanwhile, inmates of the high security wing break free and riots break out. When he awakes he realises he’s trapped and has to pretend to be a new prisoner in order to survive... Engaging and intense, with striking performances by the cast, Cell 211 is pulsating and generic enough to warrant a Hollywood remake, yet smart enough to work as a devastating social critique.Winner - Eight Spanish Goya Awards 2010 including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a delightfully funny feast for the eyes with multi-generational appeal. Mr and Mrs Fox live an idyllic home life with their son Ash and visiting young nephew Kristofferson. But, after 12 years, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief, and in doing so endangers not only his own beloved family, but the whole animal community. Creating alternative universes is something this director has always excelled at, and his attention to detail finds great expression here. Classic stop-motion animation gives the story a delightful homemade feel.

KINGs OF COMeDyBARRy MuRphy, JOe ROONey, KevIN MCAleeR

Kings Of Comedy is a unique opportunity to see 3 genuine Irish comedy legends perform together on the same bill.

Of Apres Match fame, amongst other great things, Barry Murphy is “one of the high kings of Irish comedy” (Hot Press) and is simply not to be missed. His sheer originality and overwhelming talent guarantee that there is no other performer like him.

Having acted as Father Damo in Father Ted and Timmy in the long running RTE sitcom Killinaskully, Joe Rooney has been making people laugh for the last fifteen years. With observations about everything from fatherhood to paedophile pigeons, his infectious enthusiasm leaves audiences in paroxysms of laughter. Throw in a few hilarious musical interludes and you have a recipe for comedy genius.

Kevin McAleer is one of the founding fathers of modern standup, but he is still writing and performing his unique brand of nonsense like a spring chicken on acid. He has influenced and inspired a whole generation of comedians in Ireland and the UK. His trademark timing and delivery is just getting sharper with age.

Barry Murphy: “The Comedy Don” The Irish Times.Joe Rooney: “…his years of experience have made him one of Ireland’s “10 Most Wanted”, when promoters nationwide pick up their phones.” Hot PressKevin McAleer: “Probably the best piece of standup I have ever seen,” Stewart Lee.

Dir: Francois Ozon / France / 2010 / 103 mins / Cert: 15AStarring: Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, Language: French Catherine Deneuve stars in Francois Ozon’s stage adaptation, a hilarious French comedy of deliberate naffness. It is a period pastiche executed with brilliant attention to detail and a weird, suppressed passion. There is, however, more than enough here to generate comedy, satire and shrewd comment on what might be going on in the collective mind of Sarkozy’s France. Suzanne (Deneuve) is the submissive, housebound wife of wealthy industrialist, who oversees his umbrella factory with an iron fist and is equally tyrannical with his children and ‘trophy wife’, ‘potiche’. When the workers go on strike and take Robert hostage, Suzanne steps in to manage the factory. To everyone’s surprise, she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. Catherine Deneuve leads a blue-chip cast in this screwball comedy which is arch, knowing and self-aware.

Artist talk/ Open eventDate: Saturday October 1st Time: 3.30-4 pm (Wine reception starts at 3pm)

To coincide with the launch of Linda Brownlee’s exhibition “Achill”. Riverbank Arts Centre is delighted to invite you to meet and listen to the artist discuss this body of work in an informal setting.

Achill is Ireland’s windy westernmost island; a naturally secluded place. Linda Brownlee has been spending her August holidays in Achill amongst family and friends over the last 16 years. Captivated by the texture of its raw and unpredictable landscape, the series presented in Brownlee’s work titled Achill, is the result of the photographic explorations she undertook with a group of local teenagers throughout the last two years. Photographed in their favourite spots, near their homes or sites chosen by Brownlee, these adolescent figures – resting or only hesitating within the camera’s frame – draw the eye into and across the island’s contours, revealing the shape of the land through the intimacy of their relationship to it. A tranquillity pervades Brownlee’s photographs that, despite rain or wind, stems from a sense of belonging. Her careful images capture the moody portrait of a place.

Linda Brownlee is a communications graduate of Dublin City University originally from Co. Kildare. Brownlee’s photos have been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in London, Host Gallery, Printspace, the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Yinka Shonibare Space. She has also been commissioned by the Photographers Gallery in London. Her portrait, documentary and fashion work has featured in numerous publications such as Vogue, Dazed and Confused, The Guardian, Times and Telegraph Magazines.

For this exhibition Julia Pallone is displaying drawing and paper installations, which explore the boundaries between sleep and wakefulness. Her interest lies in the possible occurrences of metamorphosis, in the surging up of the fantastic in everyday life, not as an intrusion into the real world, but as an inherent part of it, as a latent state.

Julia Pallone is a visual artist working with a variety of media, ranging from drawing, photography and installations through which she explores a poetic vision of the world, fragile and vulnerable. She has exhibited extensively in Europe and has been awarded several art residencies and bursaries awards. She is currently working as an Artist Facilitator for the Arts for Health program/West Cork Art Centre, and teaches art at various levels and age groups.
