River Ridge Proudly Presents 2015 Valedictorian and Salutatorian by Caron Townsend

Kari Breuer, daughter of Joe and Cindi Breuer of Glen Haven, has been named River Ridge’s 2015 Valedictorian. Not only is Kari at the top of her class, she is also involved in National Honor So-ciety, FFA, track and wrestling manag-er. As a school leader, she is treasurer of FFA and secretary of National Honor Society. Kari’s future plans are to at-tend UW-River Falls this fall and major in animal science.

Tanner Irish, son of Tom and Lori Irish of Bagley, has been named our 2015 Salutatorian. In addition to be-ing an outstanding student, Tanner has been involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, Friends Help-ing Friends, Science Club, Wellness Club, Fellow Christian Athletes and is a member of the track team. His lead-ership positions include president of NHS, Student Council vice president, president of his Wellness Club and cap-tain of his track team. Tanner plans to attend UW-Milwaukee this fall and major in computer engineering.

Freshman Orientation The 8th grade students from St. Mary’s and the River Ridge Middle School will participate in a high school orientation session on May 7. They will have the op-portunity to tour the school, talk with high school students about academics and extra-curricular activities as well as be introduced to our high school policies.

Juniors Attend UW-Platteville Shadow DayThree juniors from River Ridge attended UW-Platteville’s Shadow Day. Stu-dent Shadow Day is designed to pair juniors with UW-Platteville students hav-ing similar interests and majors. The purpose of this event is to experience a day in the life of a “Pioneer.” The students and their mentors attended classes, enjoyed lunch together and participated in planned campus activities.

Student Council and NHS Sponsor Earth Day Event

The River Ridge High School Student Council and National Honor Society sponsored their annual can drive to help celebrate Earth Day. The 4K-4th grade students brought in a large number of aluminum cans, which were collected and weighed on three different mornings in April. The elementary classes competed to bring in the largest amount of aluminum and win a Culver’s Kid’s Meal coupon for each student in that grade. Congratulations to the 2nd grade for winning this year’s competition! However, no one was left out because Culver’s provided custard for the entire staff and students at the Patch Grove site to enjoy! A huge “thank you” goes out to Culver’s in Prairie du Chien for all of their support throughout this project. We would also like to thank Alternative Recycling in Lancaster for giving us a better rate on the aluminum that was collected.

Nineteen River Ridge FFA members attended the Shullsburg Soil Evalua-tion Contest along with 104 other FFA members from eight schools. River Ridge swept the competition! First place senior team included Austin Rev-olinski (1st IND), Darion Brooks (3rd IND), Lexi Harper (6th IND) and Bea Mumm (10th IND). Second place senior team included Katelyn Quick (2nd IND), Amber Patterson (7th IND), Gavin Steiber and Joey Hamann. First place junior team included Dillin Meier (5th IND), Aidan Morrow, Tyler Lansing, and Brittnee Pash. Second place junior team included Ty-ler Millin, Cole Blotz and Tessa Reynolds. Brittany Hoffman, Matt Walz, Isaac White and Dakota Kirschbaum competed in the junior division.

On Friday, April 24, the River Ridge FFA Chapter took three teams to the state FFA CDE in Madison, Wis-consin. Meat Evaluation and Tech-nology was the 6th overall team in state and included Bea Mumm, Lexi Harper, Austin Revolinski, and Bry-an Maring. The livestock judging team placed 9th in state and had Am-ber Patterson, Nicole Sturmer, Jas-mine Kopp, and Dillin Meier as team members. The final team that partici-pated in the event was the agronomy team with members Tristan White, Beth Zimmer, Michelle Cliff, and Martin Fisher. Congratulations to Dillin Meier (pictured above) who placed 2nd in state out of 144 kids and congratulations to all of the stu-dents on a job well done.

The Wildlife Management class planted 25 oak trees at the Ken and Nancy Mergen residence as part of the Blake Fork Oak Savannah Restoration Project sponsored by James Horsfall. Students worked together to plant, stake, and place wire panels around the trees on the cold April morning.

During RtI time, sixth grade students at River Ridge Upper Elementary read current articles about drug use in our society. The students were as-signed projects to increase their drug awareness. Following their indepen-dent research, Detective Stacy Polodna visited the school and shared his expertise and experiences with the students. He showed a presentation on methamphetamine and answered numerous questions. His visit strongly impacted the students. Thank you Detective Polodna for sharing your time and knowledge with us!

When you eat with your children, it is more likely that they will eat healthier and more balanced meals. Conversation starters can add fun to mealtimes.

Some conversation starters might be: • If you could be any type of animal, what would it be and why? • Describe one of our family traditions you really like.

Talking about food can be a conversation-starter too: • Ask your kids which food groups are on their plates. • Talk about where the food comes from: animals, plants, garden, store, etc. • Share what foods taste like: sweet, sour, spicy, juicy, etc.

The fifth grade classes planted a Sugar Maple in honor of Arbor Day on the school grounds. Mr. Lester Breuer as-sisted the students. Several students read trivia questions for the group to answer while other students gave a brief history of Arbor Day. The students then viewed the previ-ous Arbor trees around the grounds from years past.

It was a beautiful day to be photographed on a rooftop in downtown Madison. The River Ridge Art Club enjoyed a trip to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. The students were given a guided tour that highlighted the work of Eric and Heather ChanSchatz and they were in-spired by the “Young at Art “ exhibit which showcased the student work from the Madison School District.

Popularity of Personal Technology With Young Children Highlights Importance of Prioritizing Verbal Communication

River Ridge School District Speech-Language Pathologist, Lisa Clark, Offers Guidance for

Parents during May Is Better Hearing & Speech Month May 1, 2015—With new evidence showing a majority of young children in the United States use personal technology such as smartphones and tablets, it is important that parents ensure technology is not overtaking time for talking, reading, and other verbal communication—which are the primary ways that children learn. During May Is Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM), speech-language pathologist Lisa Clark encourages parents to set meaningful limits on technology use, especially for young children. On Friday, May 8, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) will release new figures that show just how much of a presence personal technology devices are in the lives of children ages 0–8, as well as parental concerns about the impact of this technology on their child’s speech and language development, academic success, behavior, and other areas. The survey will also reveal whether parents feel technology impacts the quality and quantity of conversations with kids, as well as where and when kids most often use this technology. “While technology offers positive potential in many areas, it is important that young children are spending the majority of their time listening and conversing with others, as well as engaging in imaginative play and outdoor activities—all of which help them learn and develop,” says Lisa Clark. “Parents can take steps to manage tech time by setting daily time limits, establishing tech-free settings such as the dinner table, and considering whether a young child really needs his or her own device, as many now have,” she says. “The summer months, which may include events such as long vacation drives, provide ample opportunities for communication that parents should try to take advantage of,” she adds. Regardless of their child’s level of technology use, parents should familiarize themselves with the early signs of speech and language disorders, which are growing causes of disability among U.S. children, according to a 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics. Parents can review these signs at http://IdentifytheSigns.org. With early treatment, many of these disorders can be reversed or even prevented, so parents should not delay seeking an assessment from a certified speech-language pathologist if they have any questions about their child’s communication skills. UNAPPROVED MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING OF THE RIVER RIDGE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE RIVER RIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT, GRANT COUNTY, WISCONSIN: April 2, 2015

The Special Meeting of the River Ridge Board of Education was called to order by President Lea Breuer on Thursday, April 2, 2015, at 6:19 p.m. Roll call was taken with the following members present: Randy Martin, Dave Breuer, Bob Key, Bob Mathre, Lea Breuer, Kerri Schier and Kenny Nies. Also present were Business Manager Carol Harris and Clay Koenig.

Kenny Nies presented proof of posting showing notice of the meeting posted on March 27, 2015, at 4:15 p.m. at the River Ridge Elementary, Middle/High School, Upper Elementary School and the post offices in Bagley, Blooming-ton, Glen Haven, Mt. Hope and Patch Grove. The motion was made by Bob

Mathre and seconded by Randy Mar-tin to approve the posting. On a voice vote, the motion carried.

4. The motion was made by Kerri Schier and seconded by Dave Breuer to move into closed session in accor-dance with Wisconsin Statute section 19.85(1)(c) which permits convening in closed session for the following pur-poses: a. Review candidates’ application materials for district administrator b. Consider and possibly select candidates to interview for district ad-ministrator positionOn a roll call vote, the following mem-bers voted yes: Randy Martin, Dave Breuer, Bob Mathre, Bob Key, Lea

Breuer, Kerri Schier and Kenny Nies. The following voted no: none. The motion carried. The meeting moved to closed session at 6:20 p.m.

5. The meeting returned to open ses-sion at 8:02 p.m.

B. Troy Marshall presented the Buildings and Grounds Report. 1. The two bids received to re-place the sound system for the track and football field were $8500 and $9500. So far this year the portable system that is used for meetings and other events has been used for track meets and has worked great. Troy has recommended that we purchase another one of those portable sys-tems for $2500. This saves $6000 and may actually work better than the permanent systems. 2. The Simplex bid to replace the fire alarm in Bloomington is the lowest at $1995. It would sat-isfy the State and provide the safety needed at that location. 3. Some of the School’s ve-hicles need upgrading. It is rec-ommended that the board should authorize Troy to begin the process by gathering information to provide options. 4. The old bus garage could be used as a much cleaner and safer storage area if it had a few upgrades to make it bird and rodent proof. The work can be done by the Main-tenance Department. 5. Veolia will be removing the old chemicals this summer. 6. A 40’ by 50’ gym floor cover would cost $800. It would be easier

to store than a full cover and would protect the floor during concerts and other events.

The motion to approve the Reports was made by Bob Key and sec-onded by Dave Breuer. On a voice vote, the motion carried.

VII. NEW BUSINESSA. The discussion about a possible health insurance premium holiday was presented by Carol Harris and Brent Straka from Tricor Insur-ance. The health insurance plan is still running very well. Our monthly claims are running about $46,000 below the normal average. It is recommended that another health insurance premium holiday should be taken for two months. The mo-tion to approve a two-month health insurance premium holiday for April and May 2015 was made by Kerri Schier and seconded by Bob Key. On a roll call vote, the follow-ing voted yes: Dave Breuer, Lea Breuer, Bob Key, Kerri Schier and Kenny Nies. The following voted no: none. Randy Martin abstained. Bob Mathre was absent. The mo-tion carried.

B. Employment Recommendation 1. Katrina Ellis has been recom-mended as the new Math Teacher. The motion was made by Randy Martin and seconded by Dave Breuer to approve the recommendation. On a voice vote, the motion carried. C. Employment Resignation 1. Ashley Mergen has resigned as the assistant girls’ basketball coach. The motion to accept the res-ignation was made by Kerri Schier and seconded by Kenny Nies. On a voice vote, the motion carried.

D. Review and Possible Approval of 2015-2016 CalendarThe motion was made by Dave Breuer and seconded by Kenny Nies to approve the 2015-2016 Calendar. E. Discussion and Approval of Sound System for Football and Track Facility The motion was made by Randy Martin and seconded by Kenny Nies to approve the portable sound system. On a voice vote, the motion carried. F. Discussion and Approval of Next Steps for Building RenovationTom Andres began the discussion about what’s next now that the ref-erendum failed. The State’s reports still have to be satisfied by Septem-ber 1, 2015. He stands for what is best for the kids.

Representatives from McKinstry Company discussed the Act 32 Energy Efficiency Exemption. It would allow the District to borrow for up to 20 years to pay off an en-ergy efficiency project. The project must be governed by a performance contractor such as McKinstry. The three priorities identified by McK-instry are the following: 1. Satisfaction of the State Re-quirements 2. Indoor air quality and the overall learning environment for the students and staff 3. Eliminate the liability to the District because of the poor air qualityThey would work with Carol Wirth to come up with the best avenue for the financing. There is a mandatory 30-day petition period to allow the public to force the project to go to a formal referendum.

Lea Breuer asked the board mem-bers to explain what their priorities are. Most members suggested that the health and safety issues are the priority. A lot of discussion con-tinued but no resolution was made. Tom will direct Carol Wirth to begin to put together resolution wording to be prepared for a later meeting.
