SUMMER PROGRAM INFORMATION

June 27- July 20, 2012 The River Edge Extended School Year Program, sponsored by the River Edge Board of Education, will begin on June 27 and continue through July 20 (closed on Wed. July 4). Classes will be held daily from 8:30-12:20. Classes will be fifty minutes long and will be based on the following time schedule: 8:30-9:20; 9:30-10:20; 10:30-11:20; 11:30-12:20. The success of the Enrichment Program depends on the enrollment of students. The cost of tuition per course is $75.00. Some courses have an additional materials fee, which is noted in the course description. The complete tuition cost will be collected at the time of registration. Tuition will be refunded in full up until June 1, 2012. We reserve the right to cancel any course, which does not have the necessary enrollment. A full refund will be made for any canceled classes. Register your child according to the grade he / she is in this current school year (2011-2012). There will be a nonrefundable family registration fee of $5.00. This year’s summer program will be held at Cherry Hill School. All drop

offs must take place on Bogert Road. No one may park, or drop off in either teachers’ parking lots. BASIC SKILLS courses in reading and math will be offered to provide an opportunity for reinforcement and retention of basic skills. ONLY THOSE CHILDREN TAKING PART IN BASIC SKILLS OR RESOURCE ROOM PROGRAMS, MAINTAINED BY THE DISTRICT DURING THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR, ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS TUITION FREE PROGRAM. Registration will begin on Tuesday, May 1 at 8:00 am. Because of class size limits for many courses, courses will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration will close on June 1, 2012. Please mail in registration or bring to the Cherry Hill School main office. No registrations will be processed without alternate class choices indicated on the registration form. Please drop it into the Summer Program registration box. A list of summer class enrollments will be displayed outside the offices at Roosevelt and Cherry Hill School. How to Register a Student

1. Download, and completely fill out the attached Registration Form. (One per student) Be sure to list second choices in case your class is closed. (Registration forms without second choices selected will not be processed). 2. Download, and completely fill out the attached Emergency Form. (One per student) 3. Mail or deliver the completed forms with a check for the total cost of the classes. All checks should be made out to the River Edge Board of Education. BASIC SKILLS COURSES

Reading and Math are offered to provide an opportunity for reinforcement and retention of basic skills. Only those children taking part in the Basic Skills / Resource Room programs, maintained by the district during the current school year, are eligible for the tuition free program. Eligible students will be notified prior to registration. It is your responsibility to register your child for his/her basic skills class. We invite you to register your child as early as possible. Registration opens on Tuesday, May 1 at 8:00 am. Because of class size limits for many courses, classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. This includes Basic Skills. SUMMER PROGRAM ENRICHMENT COURSES Period I (8:30-9:20)

1. Carolyn Brush Rise and Shine Yoga Project Room What better way to start your day than with yoga. Explore animated poses and basic exercises through fun activities. In this class we will use a creative approach to do yoga activities through imitating animals and nature, use creative expression, games, music, art and storytelling. Decorate your own yoga mat, bring in your favorite stuffed animal or doll for Downward Doll Yoga, explore some favorite yoga poses, and so much more. Don’t miss out on this perfect way to start your day, Release your energy in a fun way and display confidence and a sense of well- being. Namaste! Please bring with you a yoga mat (if you want to decorate your own mat, if not mats will be provided) water bottle, and towel.

Grades: K-3 Cost: $75 8:30-9:20 2. John Corcoran Introduction to Model Rocketry Discovery Room Participants will build and launch a model rocket. They will experience, “Hands on” science instruction involving principles of motion and force. This workshop is designed for students with little, or no model building experience. Computer Carnival for 21st Century Skills! Animated movies! Digital Photos! Garage Band! Power Point slide shows… and much more! Do these computer applications sound fun to you? If so, Computer World is the class for you. Students will enhance their problem solving and computer skills as they create their own musical compositions, photo slide shows, and animated movies. They will have the opportunity to play Internet games and strengthen Keyboarding skills as well if they so choose. Kids, you can personalize this class to meet your computer interests. (No personal information will be given out on the Internet.) Grades: K-6 Cost: $75 8:30-9:20 4. Vanessa Hernandez Gallery of Softies Handmade Creatures Room 25 Your child will become a soft toy designer after taking this class. This class introduces cutting from a pattern, assembling and sewing, using wool, felt, fabric scraps, buttons, and trim. Your child will learn the basics of soft toy design, pattern making, and construction, using a variety of easy hand stitches. At the end of this class a gallery will be presented, and your child will take home some softie friends. Grades: 3-6 Cost: $90 8:30-9:20 5. Joe Hunter Gym Games Gym Spend a part of your summer playing your favorite games from physical education class during the school year. In this class we will use our creativity to build vehicles, structures, and cities. We will start as architects, creating and planning. Then we will use our engineering and building skills. Your imagination will come to life constructing your Lego Land Metropolis! Grades: 2-6 Cost $75 8:30-9:20 7. Susan Champagne Kids’ Cuisine Multi-Purpose Room So what can we “cook up” this summer? We will be trying new recipes as we practice kitchen safety. At the end of the course, children will have a collection of recipes and enough “know how” to be a big help in the kitchen. On the first day of class, bring a labeled apron, a dishtowel, a small slicing knife, and a plastic container. Grades: 1-2 Cost: $95 8:30-9:20 8. Nicole Colon How to Draw Room 245 Children love to draw pictures, but for some, it can be a difficult experience. This class will teach students step by step drawing, using basic shapes to create pictures at all levels. Students will keep drawing pads and experiment with different types of tools. Students will also have the opportunity to add writing to their illustrations. Grades: K-2 Cost: $90 8:30-9:20 9. Eric Morgan Wii Fit / Wii Sports Room 212 What?! Exercise and Video games together? That’s right...you read it correctly. Join Mr. Morgan for Wii Sports. Students will take part in an interactive new way of exercise that is engaging for all video game lovers. Whether you like sports, video games, or both, this is the class for you. Wii fit will focus on strength, balance, and stretching. Wii Sports will entertain children with the popular sports; boxing, baseball, bowling, and tennis. Grades: 1-6 Cost: $75 8:30-9:20 10. Beth McLaughlin Art is Fun Art Room Do you like expressing yourself with art? Do you enjoy drawing? Do you like to paint? Do you like to work with clay? Then this class is for you! Use your imagination as you get creative and have fun creating art. You will experiment with clay, paint, paper and paper mache. Please bring a smock to the first class. Grades: 2-4 Cost: $90 8:30-9:20 11. Melissa Gant Ready, Set, First Grade Room 226 Students entering first grade will enjoy games based on activities, which will help prepare them for first grade. They will enjoy literature based arts and craft projects and work with each other to explore math concepts. They will play fun games to practice fine motor skills as well as coordination. Bring your sunny smiles and get ready for some summer fun! Grades: Kindergarten Cost: $90 8:30-9:20 12. Paul Scott Instrumental Music Band Room Beginning Players (those who have had NO prior instruction): Students will be offered beginning instruction in any of the following instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Drums. Students in grades 3-6 will receive one group lesson (9 students or less per group) each day. Daily lessons will enable the students to advance quickly working in a small group setting. FOSSILS, ROCKS AND MINERALS Investigate what fossils, rocks and minerals can reveal about our planet, Earth. Explore the fossil record, the different rock forms, and the fascinating gemstones within. Create your own fossil print, sand and polish a piece of amber millions of years old, crack open a geode. Grades: 4-6 Cost: $90 8:30-9:20 14. Kelly Dent D.R.U.M. up some Fun Music Room Have you heard of D.R.U.M? It stands for Discipline, Respect and Unity through Music. In this class, the focus is on having fun and working as a team. You will sharpen your musical skills as you play music from around the world on bongo, conga, djembe, and tubano drums. There will be opportunities to dance, sing, and play xylophones along with the drums. We will even make a recording of our final product! Come be a part of our musical team! Grades: 3-6 Cost: $75 8:30-9:20 15. Diana Richards Under the Sea Room 17 Our oceans are full of beauty and wonder, a separate world waiting for us to explore. We will become ocean explorers this summer and learn about the mysteries of the oceans! We will research different ocean animals through books and videos, and create amazing ocean animal crafts. Through fun filled ocean games, experiments, and arts and crafts we will become experts on our oceans!

16. Lisa Patrocinio Building Bridges Room 121 “London Bridge is falling down, falling down…” Even though you can’t save the London Bridge, perhaps you can save others. How would you like to be an architect in charge of building bridges that must with stand the stress of our planet? Bridges are a large part of our world. They connect states, towns, streets and lives. As a group of architects, you must design and build four bridges. Can you and your team design the perfect bridge? Grades: 5-6 Cost: $90 8:30-9:20 17. Lisa Pitingolo Math Fun Room 18 Keep your math skills sharp this summer! If you are tired of practice worksheets and online activities and are looking to have some fun with math, join me for games that are easy to learn and fun to play! You will discover new problem solving strategies and shortcuts, and personalize your favorite games to take home to enjoy with your friends and family. Grades: 3-4 Cost: $75 8:30-9:20 18. Tara Delmour Once Upon a Time Room 26 In this creative writing workshop students will have an opportunity to explore and discuss the components of a good story and apply these elements to their own writing. Through daily reading activities and journaling in our writing notebooks students will brainstorm, develop, and nurture their own creative ideas to include in their stories. As the class

progresses students will ultimately produce their own storybook to share with their classmates in our culminating short story festival, and keep as a reminder of their literary success!

Children in grades K-1 will use their creativity to build vehicles, structures, and cities. Come have fun, learn to share, build cool structures and let your creativity shine!

Period II (9:30-10:20) 21. Carolyn Brush So You Think You Can Dance…and Sing? Project Room Put on your dancing shoes, warm up your vocal chords, and join the fun!! This course will make you feel like a star. We will review basic dance steps and you will be the choreographer. You will choreograph a variety of dances to some of the hottest music of the past and present. You will also have an opportunity to showcase your talent singing karaoke to the pop hits of today. There will be a performance of your talents on the last day of the program. Grades: 4-6 Cost: $75 9:30-10:20 22. John Corcoran Model Rocketry II Discovery Room This is a similar class to Intro to Model Rocketry, but at a higher level of instruction. Participants will build a more challenging rocket. Please do not register for this workshop unless your child has had experience building several model rockets or other model kits. 24. Vanessa Hernandez Doll Fashionista Room 25 It is a class full of creativity and fantasy. Students will make two 18 inch dolls and their wardrobes. They will have fun while they learn basic hand stitching using a needle, thread, and felt. Children will learn various basic stitching, along with learning how to sew a button while making their projects. At the end of this adventure, each student will have improved his/her fine motor skills, gained a sense of independence, and had the opportunity to be creative. A gallery with the creations of the young artists will be displayed at an open house for parents and friends at the end of class. Grades: 2-6 Cost: $90 9:30-10:20 25. Each student will create a Babysitter Survival Kit and have a chance to practice their new skills with super cute babies and kids! Grades: K-3 Cost: $75 9:30-10:20 34. Diana Richards Obstacles with Angry Birds Room 17 The Angry Birds need your help to save their precious eggs from the greedy pigs! We will be using our imagination to create new Angry Birds characters with special powers. In this course we will use different materials to create obstacles and use our newly created Angry Bird characters to compete on teams and knock down the greedy pigs. Children will work in groups and use problem solving strategies to create and use characters to complete daily obstacles. Special angry bird prizes after all of the greedy pigs in each obstacle has been knocked down!

Grades: 1-4 Cost: $90 9:30-10:20 35. Lisa Patrocinio Life on Mars Room 121 What if the human race was forced to live on another planet? Now let’s say that planet was Mars. How would you survive? Well, that’s up to you and your friends. As a team you must create a plan of survival for the human race. How would you grow food, get water or even find shelter? You will design and make models for your inventions that will assist the humans while trying to sustain life on Mars. Grades: 5-6 Cost: $90 9:30-10:20

36. Lisa Pitingolo Yoga Fit Room 18 Learn yoga this summer! YogaFit will not only teach the basics of yoga postures, movement, and breathing, but also how yoga and meditation can help pre-teens cope with the stress and pressures of everyday life. Tara Delmour Poetry Slam Room 26 In this poetry workshop students will have an opportunity to read and write different types of poems, and apply these formats to their own writing. As the class progresses students will ultimately produce their own poem in the format of their choice to perform for their classmates at our spoken word poetry slam!

They will practice comprehension strategies through book talks and crafts in the style of the authors and illustrators. Grades: K-1 Cost: $90 9:30-10:20 39. Kayla Moran Super Doodles Room 109 Do you want to learn how to draw really cool cars, airplanes, animals and sea creatures? This is the class for you! Learn how to draw a Hummer, a Ferrari Testarossa, a F-117 Stealth Fighter, a F-22 Raptor, an octopus, a leatherback turtle and more. Period III (10:30-11:20) 41. Carolyn Brush Glee Club Project Room Glee Club is making its debut in the River Edge Summer Enrichment Program. If you would like to be a part of this exciting class then sign up now. You will be singing hit songs from this popular show and choreograph dances to go with the songs. You will have a chance to perform in front of an audience on the last day of the summer program. Grades: 3-6 Cost: $75 10:30-11:20 42. John Corcoran Do You Think It Will Fly? Discovery Room Participants will build and fly simple projects. No special skills are required for this workshop. Some activities will have a planned design and others will be experimental. 43. Christine Halstater Scrapbooking Room 110 Do you love looking at photos of family and friends? If the answer is yes, come join us! We’ll be using stickers, stencils, colorful paper, and more, to create photo albums and frames. Learn how to crop photos, make creative borders and fun layout designs. You will also learn journaling techniques to tell the stories behind the pictures. Everyone has a story to tell, tell yours with pictures! Bring photos, a tape runner (found in AC Moore / Michaels), a shoebox to keep your supplies in, and an album. If you have memorabilia you’d like to use, bring that as well. Spend the summer playing and learning about the country’s most popular sport. Children will learn the fundamentals of football and gain a competitive edge that can carry forth in their future athletic endeavors. Each day the students will learn the different skill positions of football and participate in drills for that position. At the end of each class, these skills will be put to use in a friendly, competitive game of flag football. 49. Christine O’Keefe Computer Carnival – Games and More Computer Lab Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Step right up to the Computer Carnival where a world of keyboard amusement awaits each and every one of you. The students will enhance their problem solving and computer skills as they explore and evaluate sites on the River Edge Web Site and the Internet that are geared for children. They will play games as they increase academic and thinking skills. Students will also have an opportunity to design their own web page or create an I-Movie if they desire. (No personal information will be given out on the Internet.) Grades: K-6 Cost: $75 10:30-11:20 50. Beth McLaughlin Watercolor Painting Art Room Learn the art of watercolor painting! Explore the art of color mixing, glazing, graded washes, wet on wet and dry brush painting techniques. Discover the transparent and opaque qualities of the different colors. See the difference between smooth and textured watercolor paper. Have fun creating paintings of still life and landscapes. Students need to bring a smock, new kitchen sponge and old washcloth (to be used as a rag) to the first class. Grades: 4-6 Cost: $90 10:30-11:20 51. Melissa Gant Craftmania Room 226 Are you creative and crafty? Can you look at something boring and envision turning it into something amazing? If glitter, feathers, glue, painting, and coloring spell fun to you, then you are a perfect fit to this class. Join us while we explore the fun world of crafting, where our endless creativity will take charge! For those of you who wish you could be craftier, we’d love to share our ideas with you.
