Raven Clinic Tips

Welcome to 2006! I hope everyone had a safe, happy, restful and healthy winter break. We all make New Year Resolutions; I want to suggest one or two to add to your list. Remember to update your child's emergency form in the River Bend Clinic. Please list any changes in phone numbers. Many of the parents have been very good at keeping me informed of changes, but there have been times when I've been unable to locate a parent when a child needs to go home. Besides updating phone numbers, we need to have a local emergency contact. We appreciate having grandparents listed, but if they live in another

state, they cannot get to your child fast, if needed. For safety reasons the school will not release your child to someone you haven’t listed as an emergency contact. Keeping your child's form updated will make everything run smoother if there is an emergency.

Please remember that students are not allowed to bring any type of medication to school (over-the-counter or prescription). It is the parent's responsibility to deliver the medication to the clinic and make sure the proper forms are filled out. As a parent, I feel badly when I am unable to give a student Pepto-Bismol or cough drops that they brought to the clinic because I don't have the proper form with written approval from you. I have enjoyed meeting and talking with many of the parents during the first part of the school year. If you have questions, please feel free to call the school at 703-444-7574 and ask to speak with Mrs. Bailey in the clinic. Medication forms are available on the River Bend website, or they may be obtained from the clinic.

It’s time to order your yearbook before it is too late! A final mailing from Jostens will be coming home after

the holidays. Look for the envelope in the mail. Extra order forms are also available in Computer Lab 3. You can order online, by phone, or via return mail to Jostens.

If you have any pictures of RBMS students enjoying their extra curricular activities outside of school,

please send them to school, attention of either Mrs. Melchione or Ms. Ellis in Computer Lab 3. If you have any questions, feel free to email Mrs. Melchione at [email protected] or Ms.

Ellis at [email protected].

Throughout the school year, keep in mind that counselors are here as a resource to help both students and parents. We can assist with a variety of issues and concerns, and we are easy to contact. Please do not hesitate to call us

at 703-444-7574. Mentor Program – During the month of December, the mentors and their students got together after school and played bingo and enjoyed snacks. Parent and Family ESL Class Over the past ten weeks, the PTA sponsored twenty of our parents and families in a Level 1 English as a Second Language class. This class was taught by River Bend Middle School’s ESL teacher, Krista Petersen, and a parent volunteer as teacher assistant during each class. Funding for this class was provided by grants from Loudoun Education Foundation, Potomac Falls High School PTO, and the Redskin Foundation. Loudoun Adult Education provided funding for the instructor. We had over thirty-five adults that were interested in taking the class, but could only enroll twenty. All of these parents, grandparents and uncles attended the classes and initially paid $25.00 tuition, which was returned at the end of the completion of the classes. The attendees were from nine different countries and spoke four different languages. We were the first school-based class that was ever offered in Loudoun County, and we hope to encourage other schools to follow in our footsteps. We had guest speakers at four of the classes. The guest speakers were: Principals Bennett Lacy (RBMS) and Dave Spage (PFHS), who spoke about their school curriculum and activities, Stephanie Johnson, 8th grade Guidance Counselor at RBMS, and Dean Allnutt, Technology Teacher at RBMS. The adult students learned English and grammar, the operation of our school system, and developed relationships with other parents. We taught about interims, report cards, conferences, homework hotline, parent organizations and volunteer opportunities. We had many parent volunteers, including Karin Abt, Leighton Krips, Wendy Ahart, Didem Maurice, Carol Diniega and Kathy Lague. We were also fortunate to have had Tiffany Baracat, a senior from Potomac Falls High School, organize other seniors and juniors to be available for tutoring any of the students that attended the classes with their parents. Thank you to all who have been involved and donated their time to this program. I especially want to thank Krista Petersen for her dedication to our River Bend families and to Ben Lacy for his support and acceptance in every step of the plan. We hope to be offering a Level 2 class in the spring. The beat goes on……… Kathy Lague ESL Parent Program Coordinator

LEO CLUB The food drive for LINK yielded over 850 canned & boxed items. Hundreds of families in Loudoun County were helped by your generosity. Thank you. We continue to collect used eyeglasses and old hearing aids. Place them in the Lions Club Eyeglass Box in the main office. We will also be partnering with Farmwell Station's Leos to collect "Cell Phones for Soldiers". The Veterans Hospitals are collecting used cell phones and will recycle parts in order to purchase phone cards for our soldiers so that they can stay in touch with their loved ones. We would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word to neighbors, friends, relatives, church groups, and others. We can make a huge difference in the lives of our

soldiers and their families. We will be collecting phones for the next several months. Please send phones to room C-17 or drop them in the box in the main office.

TIMOTHY CREW Join us as we consider - "What is true and reliable today?" Timothy Crew is a Christian club open to all. We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, after school, in the health room. Students lead us in discussions, encouragement and games. In January, join us on Jan 5 and Jan 19.

ROCKET CLUB Rocket club is working very hard getting ready for the Team America Challenge. Right now, the club is in the process of deciding what type of rocket to build for the competition. We need your help! Once the team members build the rocket, they will need to do extensive testing before they can qualify for the finals. This testing will require extensive funding. Our team has signed up for the Staples Recycle for Education Program. Rocket Club will be collecting inkjet printer cartridges. For each cartridge we return, we will receive $3.00. There will be a collection box in front of the Tech Ed 2 room where you can drop the cartridges off. Thank you for your support.

Continental Math League

Continental Math League is a national competition that lasts for five months. Each month, students compete by solving detailed, high level reading/math problems and the top six scores for each grade are submitted as River Bend’s team scores for each grade level. Round two of the Continental Math League, sponsored by the PTA and coordinated by Dr. Talbot, took place in December. Four students who competed in the December contest achieved perfect scores!!!: three seventh graders, Matt Baker, Kathryn Russ, and Katie Lin and one sixth grader, Daniel Mares. Way to go! The following had awesome scores and missed only one problem; Justin Washington, Megan Garrett, and Joanne Guidry (8th grade), Alex Baird, Jessica Eversmeyer, Diana Gretskowski, Tyler Hawk, Nick Hergenroeder, Sam Schipani, Chris Sobieskie, and Alexandra Summers, (7th grade) Connor Adams, Ryan Anderson, George Buenafe, Jackie Dallaire, and Nicole Teets (6th grade). River Bend is proud of the great work by all the students who participated in the November Continental Math League contest! Keep up the good work on the next four meets. As of meet two, our grade level leaders are Rachael Diniega, Joanne Guidry, and Megan Garrett (8th), Matt Baker (7th), and Daniel Mares (6th) Remember, spend as much time reading and understanding the problems as you do answering them! Thanks to the PTA for funding this competition.

SAY WHAT?

Ok, so you are the good parent looking over your child’s shoulder at the IM they are sending and the message is in some sort of Greek like code. If you just said “what’s an IM?” ask your child because you REALLY need to know! Well here is the first lesson in how to read computer shorthand • BFN = bye for now • CUZ = because • DIKU = do I know you? • GMTA = great minds think alike • HAGN = have a good night

• LMIRL = let’s meet in real life • P911 = my parents are coming! • POS = parent over shoulder • WB = welcome back • WUF = where are u from?

ALL BANDS Please take the opportunity weekly to check the Band website. You can link to the site from the RBMS homepage by clicking on ‘Staff’ then clicking on Mr. Steffens’ name. You will find current class assignments and important notices posted there.

ALL-DISTRICT XVI BAND At the time of this writing the results are still not official. However, for now congratulations go to Miles Blunt, Danny Callum, Andrew Coyle, Tommy Dacanay, Simone Dallaire, Mark Davis, Lillie Dehghan, Ana Matiz, Lucy Krips, and Samantha Schipani who were accepted by audition for membership in this year’s All-District XVI Middle School Band. Nikhil Bhatnagar, Megan Garrett, and Matthew Gurski have been designated as alternates. Students were required to perform major scales, chromatic scale, and a sight-reading exercise during their audition at Potomac Falls High School on December 10. It is considered a high honor to be accepted as members or alternates for this group that is comprised of the most outstanding middle school band students in our county. Students will soon receive information regarding the festival itself that will be held at Heritage High School on Friday February 3 and Saturday February 4, 2006. BAND 6 Please check Mr. Steffens’ website soon for audition information regarding the RBMS Honors Band 6. BAND 7 After-school rehearsals in preparation for the upcoming concert will be held on Wednesday January 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 3:25 – 4:15pm. Students are reminded to wait in their final period class of the day until the second dismissal bell at 3:25. Late bus transportation is available. The concert will be held in the RBMS Auditorium on Thursday January 26 beginning at 7pm. Students are to report to stage by 6:30pm that evening. Concert wear will be white shirt, black dress pants, black socks, black shoes for all members. BAND 8 A schedule of after-school section rehearsals has begun. Please check Mr. Steffens’ website for an updated listing of those rehearsals. Attendance is required and is essential for fine-tuning our performance of music for the Pre-Festival concert in February as well as the Festival of Bands judged performance in March. Students absent for any reason should make arrangements with Mr. Steffens to attend make-up sessions.

GUITAR CENTRAL by: Mark Campayno

Welcome to the first edition of guitar central! This column has been created to

keep you informed of the goings on in River Bend’s 7th and 8th grade guitar program. In addition, this column will keep those of you with rising 7th graders informed of the expectations for your children as they consider entering into the program next year. Let me say initially that that this year’s program has already exceeded my expectations. Through their hard work and dedication to the guitar, River Bend’s guitar students are moving ahead at a very brisk pace and are on track to exceed their required levels of proficiency by the end of the second quarter! Many of the 8th grade players are maturing into first-rate players as they have pushed themselves hard in learning some really difficult music. I couldn’t be happier this year as the efficiency, dependability, and enthusiasm of the students has made for a very successful start to this campaign.

Upcoming Events

The Ensembles

8th Grade: This group of young guitarists is red hot at this point. I could give

this group at least one new piece per week and they would have no problem keeping up. I am very pleased with the results so far and many of the players are rising up to become musical leaders. With this attitude even more great things are possible. They are a very confident and robust group and are very particular with their sound. They edit themselves constantly in order to improve upon each piece. As they gear up for their first round of performances, this 8th grade group is good to go.

7th Grade: River Bend’s 7th grade program is doing very well as they are

making preparations for their first concert. I must say that this group of students, all 107 of them are extremely motivated and are working very hard. Moreover, they are starting to form an identity of their own. Group identity is the most important element of a successful ensemble group and this group is starting to gel. They are becoming more confident and are playing very well. Things will only get better and next year will be something to see!

Advanced Group: The 8th grade advanced group is performing more difficult

music. This group has been faithful in showing up every morning at 7:45 for rehearsals. Things are starting to come together even though the music is demanding and requires much repetition. One problem has been the inability of some to get to school in the morning. Due to my after school schedule it’s tough for me to do after school rehearsals but I am open to suggestions on this point. I have an open door policy regarding admission. As long as one is willing and able to learn difficult guitar techniques quickly, I am always willing to welcome a student to the group.

Rising 7th graders: I am beginning to meet some of the 6th graders who are planning to enroll in the guitar program next year. I am very excited as these students are already showing great promise and enthusiasm. If you are a parent of a rising 7th grader feel free to contact me about the requirements for next year. If you are in 6th grade and just want to stop by to visit, the door is always open.

Some thoughts Why is the guitar becoming so popular? This

question is not as easy to answer as it appears. Due to the instruments portability and (in general) less expensive start up investment, it can be an attractive alternative for those wishing their children to pursue musical study. In addition, it’s hard to imagine an instrument that is heard more on commercial musical recordings or focused on more in music videos. That in itself has been the impetus for many to begin guitar study. An often-overlooked aspect of the popularity of the guitar is its ability to be used as an instrument with which to teach all aspects of music education. Melodic and harmonic motion and construction, songwriting and composition, improvisation, and solo and ensemble playing are but a few of the educational tools that can be taught on the instrument. Lastly, the aesthetic properties of the instrument are attractive to young and old alike who desire to learn to play. In other words, the instrument just looks cool!

What are your children learning in guitar? I pride myself on giving the

students a broad approach to guitar playing. Leaving no stone unturned musically, we cover all styles from renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, modern, rock, blues, jazz, world, and even bluegrass. In addition to learning proper classical technique, pick style playing, “trick” techniques such as harmonics and tapping, sight-reading, and chord and melody playing, the students are learning improvisation and arranging. I can think of no two more important areas of musical development. If your child plans on continuing with the guitar (as I’m sure most will) the two most requested and demanded areas of guitar performance will be the ability to improvise on the spot, and to be able to organize, arrange, and manipulate musical materials. I truly feel that I deliver to the students those critical abilities, which will only grow stronger in your child as the months and year’s progress.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF:

MY CHILD IS GOING TO BE LATE OR ABSENT TODAY

Call the Absentee line at 703-444-7581 and let us know the child’s name, grade, and reason for absence.

MY CHILD IS LEAVING EARLY

Send your child with a note. The student should bring the note to the house secretary before school starts. The student is issued an early release pass so they can leave the classroom, sign out in the house office and meet the parent or guardian in the main office at the correct time.

MY CHILD WILL BE OUT OF SCHOOL AND I KNOW IN ADVANCE

If your child is going to miss a day or more and you know in advance please have them bring a note to the house secretary letting us know the dates and if you want homework requested. Teachers need 2 working days for a homework request in most situations and the sooner they know the better.

18

Lost and Found

The lost and found tables are overflowing. Currently there are three lost and found tables, one in each house area. A lost item could end up on any of the three tables. If your child has lost an item please have them check all three of the tables.

Pease Note! Any expensive items such as cell phones, wallets or purses are held by the house secretary or dean so check with them for these types of items.
