ASharePointwebapplicationiscomposedofanInternetInformationServices(IIS)websitethatactsasalogicalunitforthesitecollectionsthatyoucreate.Beforeyoucancreateasitecollection,youmustfirstcreateaWebapplication.Eachwebapplicationisrepresentedbyadifferent IISwebsitewithauniqueorsharedapplicationpool.Youcanassigneachwebapplicationauniquedomainname.Thishelpspreventcross-sitescriptingattacks.Whenyoucreateanewwebapplication,youalsocreateanewcontentdatabaseanddefinetheauthenticationmethodusedtoconnecttothedatabase.Inaddition, youdefineanauthenticationmethod tobeusedbytheIISWebsiteinSharePoint.

ASharePointwebapplicationwillnotbecomeavailableifyoudon’t createaSiteCollectionon it.EachSiteCollectioncanhavemoreSiteCollections,andeverySiteCollectioncancontainseveralSubSites.

FromanOutofthebox standpoint, youhaveseveralpredefinedtemplates,likePublishing Sites,TeamSites,ProjectSitesandmore.

Allthesesitescanbeexposed totheIntranet,ExtranetandInternetareas.Youwillonlyhavetoextendtheminordertocreateauniqueareaforeach.

PermissionLevels


Permissionsonsecurableobjectsinasiteareinherited fromtheparentobjectbydefault.Youcanbreakinheritanceandusefine-grainedpermissions— uniquepermissions onthelistorlibrary,folder, itemordocument level.

Whenyouremoveauser’spermissions, thatchangewillaffectthechildobject.WepropagatetheDeletepermissionregardlessofthestatusofinheritance.

Thetop-levellimittothesegrainedpermissions, isthe Item(records, foldersordocuments).

Defaultpermissionlevelsarepredefined setsofpermissionsthatyoucanassigntoindividual users,groupsofusers,orsecuritygroups,basedonthefunctional requirementsoftheusersandonsecurityconsiderations.SharePointpermissionlevelsaredefinedatthesitecollectionlevelandareinherited fromtheparentobjectbydefault.
