For those of us old enough to remember 1945 with somelucidity, surely it stands out as the year of the 20th centuryFinal victory over Germany came in May and in Septemberthe Japanese surrender ended World War IIaltogether.Although other events pale in the shadow of these, 1945also saw additional important happenings: Aaron Coplandwon the Pulitzer Prize for Appalachian Spring; playwrightMary Clark for Harvey and John Hersey for his novelABel/ for Adano. In Hollywood The Lost Weekend walkedaway with the Academy Awards, nam:ed Best Picture;Ray Milland, Best Actor; and BillyWilder Best Director.Jackie Robinson signed a contract with the MontrealRoyals in October an historic event which would bring himtwo seasons later to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking theU.S. Major League color barrier. Carousel opened onBroadway The Met's season included Coq d'Or andPel/eas, and The Chocolate Soldier was performed atLouisiana State University Chacun a songout!! ArtisticDirectorJamesStuart

This last was of vital impoirtance to me, a sixteen-year-oId, about to enter the LSU freshmanclass, bent on becoming a music major and-above all- an opera singer. In spring 1945, stillin highschool, I 'd been chosen by Ralph Errolle, at that time director of the LSU opera department, to be aBulgarian soldierin the university production of Straus' operetta. Mr. Errolle, himself a former leadingtenor at the Met and Chicago Opera, had chosen me to be a Bulgariansoldier'

During the war years, with so many men in service, casting college opera productions wasdifficultThe female roles were not problematical, so for Chocolate Soldier, Nadina, Mascha andAurelia were easily double cast. Errolle had been able to find at least one singer for each of theprincipalmen's roles-he himself sang Bumerli. And although hordes of sopranos and altos vied forthe chorus positions of townswomen, there was only a handful of male applicants for the BulgarianSoldiers' ranks-thus came my big breakl

Two particular memories remain vividof that first Chocolate Soldier production: I managedsomehow to bang into something during our New Orleans "tour" and so had to appear onstage witha large eye-patch, a most menacing 16-year-oldBulgarian barbarian. I also recall in the second act of

4

our show, Ralph Errollewould hop over the garden wall and sing a lovelyrendition of "YoursIs MyHeart Alone." Only much later did I learn that "Dein ist me inganzes Herz" is not from The ChocolateSoldier, indeed not by Oscar Straus at all. It seems that in the 1909 Englishversion of Der tapftreSoldat by one Stanislaus Stange (publishedby M. Witmark 0- Sons and used for years in Americanperformances), Lieutenant Bumerliwas stripped of his second act Tyrolean song (heard here as"Sometimes a Man," CD Two, Track2). Its music was recycled as an Act IIIduet for Mascha andAlexius, leaving the hero sololess: an unacceptible a situation for a tenor. Authenticity was not dengueur inl909-nor was it in 1945-so no one objected to Mr. Errolle'spost-pole-vault interpolationof Franz Lehar's immensely popular aria from The Land of Smiles. Nor as we received no telegramsto the contrary, did composer Oscar Straus (a close friend of Lehar)-who was at that time happilyreturning to his beloved Europe aA:era harrowing escape from the Nazis and a long, wartime exile.

These recollections certainly helped foster my own attachment to and love for The ChocolateSoldier. When Ibecame intensely involvedwith light opera, it was one of the works I most wanted toproduce. Searching for materials in 1984, I turned to Tams Witmark. but they advised me they did notcontrol the property, had no orchestra parts or vocal scores, and furthermore, did not know wherethey might be located. Ironic, since Chocolate Soldier had been one of the most popular Vienneseoperettas in the United States since its 1909 premiere. There had been several subsequent New Yorkproductions: 1921,with Donald Brian (America's first Danilo);a 1929 revival by the Shuberts; a CivicLight Opera production in 1931;the Chartok company in 1934; 1942, with Allen Jones; and a 1947revival starring Frances McCann and BillyGilbert.

Over the years it had remained a staple of major light opera companies in Saint Louis, Phila-delphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and the like.So why were the performance materials nolonger available? There were several conflicting theories afloat about property rights, the q)mposer 'sestate's intentions since the work had come into public domain in 1983, and so forth. I could notget hold of the parts, so gave up in frustration until a few years later, when Light Opera Works, awonderfully adventurous company based in Evanston, Illinois, announced The Chocolate Soldier fortheir 1987 season. I immediately got in touch with BridgitMcDonough, the company producer andlearned that Artistic Director PhilipKraus had penned the book for the operetta and Gregg Opelkahad written English lyrics. I was directed to Music Associates of America who would be handlingproduction rights.

And so came about Ohio Light Opera's first production of The Chocolate Soldier in 1988. It wasa stunning success. I<raus'book is in every way faithful to the originaland Opelka's lyricsare witty, elegantly delightful. They and the charming Oscar Straus score are presented in this first completeEnglish CD recording, as performed at our 1998summer festival. Enjoy!

Like everyone else, I was hooked on Chocolate Soldier's romantic first act aria. In my college daysI was a singing waiter in Hyannis in one of those serve-dinner-break-into-song spots on Cape Codand when my soprano girlfriend would sing that song, all drink pouring and order taking wouldBut apart from that one tune, the operetta has only been a beckoning mystery-until Jiminvitation to Newport Classic to record it. He didn't have to ask twice.

James Stuart is ~modest man, and his preceding note will probably not have mentionned the

universal acclaim his work in the lyric theater as a scholar, educator and performing artist has broughthim. He sang with opera companies, symphonies and musical theatre troupes here and abroad, onstage with the great~:-Sutherland, Sills,Tucker and Merrill-and twenty years ago founded themarvellous Ohio Light Opera. From what I have read of Oscar Straus, he and Jim share more thanlast names which are virtual anagrams for one another--each is the elegant, soft-spoken and much-beloved gentleman. They share a life-long dedication to the lighter lyric theatre. Each chose to steerclear of the stormier waters of grand opera. Both have made solid, well-recognized contributions tomusic theater in the twentieth century.

Straus came from a very, very privileged Vienneseba,!king'family and was more inspired by thedelights of his first Mikadoperformance (in 1886) than by his neurotic, negative mentor Max Bruch. It was Johann Strauss and then young Oscar's own contemporaryFranz Lehar, who encouraged him to write--what else-waltzes,cabaret tunes and operettas. After a few early attempts at Wagnerianparody and German mythology, Straus settled downto Viennese

operetta, where his true gifts earned him almost a half-century ~fsuccess.Indeed, the 1907triumph of A WaltzDreambrought theyoung composer instant celebrity and financial security for the rest ofhis long life.

His next work, The Chocolate Soldier, faced obstacles. Shaw'spacifist in Arms and the Man, the writer's 40-year attempts tosabotage the work onstage and in Hollywood, Balkan brutalitythen and now--hardly seem the stuff of nostalgia, of Viennese brio. And yet it all works wonderfully well, particularly in the English

language versions of The Chocolate Soldier which have brought thework its greatest success and given enjoyment for almost a century.
