GREENING OUR WATERWAYS
Everyone BenefitsEveryone benefits when we undertake Good Riparian Management. Riparian planting is extremely useful for improving water quality and enhancing freshwater biodiversity through:
• Reducing erosion & sedimentation• Filtering phosphorus & contaminants• Buffers the impact of flooding• Creates cool shaded habitat and food for native species
In addition, there are are also many significant benefits for your farm:
• Reduced maintenance costs over time • Reduced time worrying about audits and regulators• Personal satisfaction of doing the right thing for your whanau/family and future generations
Our Riparian Sidekicks will even provide you with your own unique QR Code so that your customers can follow your environmental journey!
INTENSIVE FARMING REGULATIONS
Land & Water Regional Plan In Canterbury intensive farming requires a Land Use consent to operate, which includes a Farm Management Plan and the application of industry agreed Good Management Practices to minimise any site specific environmental risks.
Sustainable Dairying: Water AccordTo help our farmers reach their environmental goals, Dairy NZ has put together an initiative called the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord with set goals for pledged farmers to reach, including to have:
• Riparian Planting Plans by 2020 • Implementation of these plans by 2030
For many this will represent a significant investment of both time and money, so it’s important to get it right.
