• Dr. George Copa incorporated his “design down” planning process and expertise.

• The District’s educational planner led the development of the educational specifications planning process.

• The district conducted nationwide visits to 12 exemplary career‐ and technology‐based high schools to observe their experiences on trends and best practices.

• All efforts supported a strong focus on student achievement and academic rigor and relevance through an educational platform that emphasized 21st Century skills.

Learning AcademiesLearning Environment:

The campus is designed for flexibility and to maximize learning opportunities.  Organized by six Academies and decentralized administration, the university‐type‐campus supports an educational environment that prepares students for higher education.  Each academy is supported by break‐out spaces for self‐directed learning, academy “hubs” for group learning, and group project rooms.

Main Street Plaza, defined by the space between the various campus buildings, functions as a commons area where students can enjoy a casual, outdoor space for studying, teaming, relaxing, and circulating the campus.

A wireless network and a scrolling network message center connects the campus, while a robust security system maximizes safety.

Performing Arts CenterCommunity Environment (continued):

With convenient parking and entry for visitors, the Performing Arts Center is designed to be accessible by the community.

The highlight of the Center is the professional, three‐story concert hall.  With state‐of‐the‐art acoustics and integrated technology, the performance space supports a variety of venues.  The facility connects the audience to the community, supported by an inspiring view of the Sandia Mountains beyond the Rio Grande Valley through an enormous backdrop‐window facing west.

The Center  also features a 300‐seat black box theater which provides additional performance and rehearsal space.

The community is already embracing these facilities.

Science and Environmental Learning Labs

Five sets of science classrooms are connected by a centralized, shared lab.

The environmental studies program is assisting the architects with the LEED documentation submittal by collecting energy performance data.  This promotes environmental awareness among students, teaching them about sustainability and the environmental impacts of buildings both locally and globally.
