Transcript of Rio Favelas Etc
Why “City of God”?
• Natural and man-made beauty- mountains, sea, beaches, and the statue of Christ
• Climate- warm (18-30°C), dry, but enough rain to avoid drought
• The ‘Cariocas’ (the people of Rio)- known as fun-loving, relaxed, beautiful (the importance of reputation?!)
In case you didn’t guess any of the reasons…
• To see all the lights
• To see the sunset
• Wanted to be on the beach in the day!
• Didn’t get up until midday sometimes, as Cariocas party late into the night!
The wealthier people mostly live in apartments (flats) [why?]Rio is famous for the rich
and poor being right next to each other
This is Rocinha – one favela on one hillside – population….?
…over 100 000 (about the same as Middlesbrough)
The millionaire cake-maker's favela house
How did he make so much money in a favela?
Why does he still live there?
A word about ‘rich’ and ‘poor’
• What do we mean?
• Is rich good and poor bad?
• Quality of life v. standard of living
• Excellent if you can have both, but please don’t go for the second at the expense of the first!
Consider two ‘Cariocas’ – which would you rather be?
• Senior manager working for Fiat
• £200 000 salary
• Lives in a luxury top floor flat with amazing views and two maids who cook and clean
• Owns 3 cars, including a Ferrari
• Goes on business trips all over the world
• Works 7am to 6pm Mon-Sat, often more
• Feels sad that his 3 children, all under 10 years old, hardly know him
• Rows with his wife a lot as he is always tired and never home at the time he says – he feels resentful because he lets her have £2000 a month to spend on clothes or whatever she wants
Paulo Ricardo• Sells melon to tourists on the beach
• Usually makes about £3 a day
• Lives in Rocina favela, in a shack he built with his friends
• No car - has to get the bus or walk to get anywhere
• Has never been outside Rio
• Works 7am to 2pm about 4 days a week, then goes surfing or plays football or volleyball with his 6 children and his many friends
• His children think he is a great dad, and although he is strict, they know it is because he cares about them
• Although they sometimes disagree, he loves his wife very much
They use it for internationals and big club matches between Rio teams…
[Unless the away team is from Rio you don’t get many away fans – why?]
Sadly, while I was there no big matches were on – just a meaningless end-of-season mid-table match….
