Residents and visitors, including rep-resentatives from David Thompson Health Trust gathered together Friday to celebrate the arrival of a new passenger bus to be used by residents of Rimbey Care Centre.

The 2014 Crestline Spirit of Mobility Bus has the capacity to carry 15 passengers, five of whom are sitting in wheelchairs. The $160,000 bus includes a wheelchair ramp which has the capacity of sitting on curbs or being lowered directly to the pavement.

Being present when the bus arrived and being able to observe the patients’ re-action was a wonderful experience, said Corrie Fortner, executive director of David Thompson Health Trust.

“It is great to be able to come out and

celebrate with the community and see the difference the bus will make in long term care,” said Fortner. “It’s been great to visit with the people who are going to be using the bus and hear their excitement.”Continued on page 3

Mobility Bus arrives at Care CentreContinued from page 1

Funding for the bus came through the gener-osity of individual, business and corporate donors. Volunteers spent countless hours communicating the need for a bus to the community through a post card mail out, newspaper articles and fundraising efforts.

The bus will be used for outings throughout the year to take long term care residents into the coun-try or take them on day trips to neighbouring com-munities or to activities in town. Long-term care recreation employees with the appropriate licens-ing will operate the bus.

The new bus replaces the 1991 Ford Cutaway 15-passenger van.

Presently funding is needed for a therapy pool in the rehabilitation area of the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. The hospital has been without a pool for the past two years as the aging pool could no longer be used due to leakage. Hydrotherapy al-lows patients to strengthen muscles, while decreas-ing the stress on their joints. A new pool will cost $300,000.

Another $300,000 is needed to purchase 49 additional continuing care overhead lift systems. These make it possible to lift and transfer continu-ing care residents with minimal effort and maxi-mum safety.

In the health trust’s annual report, Colleen Connolley, Site Manager of Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre commends David Thompson Health Trust. She said the DTHT provides the skills, knowledge, re-sources, and technolo-gy to help the donation committee successfully fundraise.

“Their support is phenomenal and the results are awesome,” she said.

A day in the life

Of a commuterThe 11th hour has

arrived again.Here I am head

bowed, hands clasped reverently under my chin, thinking!

What to write about?

I hate to admit this to the nice people who actually take time to read my humble at-tempts at writing every week, but it has not been a good morning. Conse-quently, my mind is mush.

Unless I consciously steer it in the direction of work, responsibility and tell it to focus on the ‘Power of Now’, like that guy who writes that new age stuff called his book, it keeps wanting to go to a place where I get to go back to bed, curl up in the fetal position and wake up in spring to flowers and sunshine and nice, dry roads.

But, reality says “you have 47 minutes until deadline. Quit feeling all sorry for yourself and get to work.”

I think of the late, great movie actor, Robin Williams and his famous movie, “Good Morning, Vietnam.

I’m not sure why I’m thinking of him, except, getting things in perspective, he certainly came across on the air in that movie as being hilarious and keeping his public’s spirits up, even during the horrors of the Vietnam war.

Surely, with that thought in mind, I could be a little happier, or at least portray a happy person, who is not all mad and tense and thoroughly yeah, well, actually, I’ve run out of adjectives, but it’s fine. You all know what I mean.

It’s about winter. But seriously, it’s not like it’s a big surprise, after all, it is the season next in line after fall and I even have snow tires, for crying out loud.

As I write the above, I feel a little guilty about complaining, but, oh well, I will anyway, but only for a few lines.

First of all my garage door wouldn’t open this morning, even though I called it bad names and ran back and forth like a crazy woman trying to catch the chain thing and make it work.

Finally, after about 15 minutes of doing this, which is far better than cardio at the gym, I got

Review is about 5700. You may think that this number is not particularly impressive but when you consider the pioneer family history of the readership it really is very signifi-cant.

The dictionary defines “frontier” as “The extreme limit of settled land beyond which lies wilderness”. This definition asserts both geographic and metaphoric truth regarding the Rimbey District and it’s people. This statement is based on the empirical insight gained by having had the privilege of serv-ing for six years as this county’s community peace officer. I have formed some incredible friendships with people who have demonstrated a style of independence and persistence rarely found any-where else.

If I started to name the families who have built this vast community over the last 150 or so years,

I would be well over the allowed word count for the article. The trials, hardships and achievements of the past three or four generations have provided the environment of comfort and optimism we enjoy today.

If one were to use monetary terms as expressions of success, recent history would demand the conclu-sion that the oil and gas industry are paramount. The people of this region however are aware of three important factors. First we do not use monetary terms as our ultimate expression of

success. We use traditional Western family values, a sense of community and an unparalleled work ethic for self-identity. Secondly the oil and gas in-dustries are most often run and serviced by people who go home after a hard days work in the oil patch and feed their cows or perform some other agricultural chore. Thirdly, agricultural enterprise will be here long after our wealth of hydrocarbon

reserves have been exhausted. Anyone who lives in the West Country; Rocky

Mountain House, Clearwater, Eckville, Ponoka, Bentley, Rimbey or a host of other Counties, towns and villages west of the fifth Meridian knows that the Term “west of the fifth” is usually used as a good-natured poke at our “Frontier” residents. On those rare occasions when someone uses the term as a pejorative (negative or insulting) expression, they plainly do not have access to a complete ce-rebral faculty: Their binder is out of twine, their well is dry, they’ve saddled a dead horse, their dog won’t hunt, their cook left home, their pow-ders wet. I am searching for an amusingly appro-priate trope. Oh! , I know, they live west of the “fourth”.

the stupid thing to open. Thank goodness no one could see me because, as I mentioned, I was in the garage behind the closed door when I did my run-ning back and forth.

Small blessings!But, of course, once the door was open I saw

the driveway which has, weirdly enough, in-creased in size immensely since the last snowfall and, in comparison, my snow shovel has shrunk to baby size.

The driveway, of course, was covered with snow, even though my son, who turned up un-expectedly and blessedly last night, had already shoveled it, complaining all the while about the little baby snow shovel.

And then there was the drive to work.For the most part, I was scared, just really

scared and alternately kept saying thank you to God for keeping me on the straight and narrow which, by the way, was extremely narrow due to the falling snow and the guy behind me in the big truck who was keeping a respectable distance be-hind me.

“Thank you guy in big truck,” I said silently in my head. “Thank you.”

Anyway, I arrived here safe and sound, and now I got that stuff off my mind about the garage door and the drive way and the drive to work, I feel much better.

And, I still have 15 minutes until deadline!Have a good day, everyone. Keep between

The Bentley Horseshoe Club, along with the Lacombe Horseshoe Club, held their windup supper together as they have for many years and announced their 2014 year-end award winners.

Bentley Player of the Year, as de-termined by club members, was new member Logan Mehls who earned both his 5% and his 10% ringer crests. His enthusiasm and dedication was motivat-ing for other members.

The Bentley Men’s League Champion was club president Paul Nor-vila with 33 total points based on points earned by his number of wins and games played throughout the season. In second place was Dave Kilbourn with 31 points.

The Bentley Lady’s League Champion was Zone 4 Horseshoe Pitch-ers Association secre-tary/treasurer Winnona Kilbourn with 32 points earned throughout the season. June Norvila placed second with 31 points. Kilbourn also won Most Improved for the Lacombe Club.

The High Average for Bentley was AHPA mem-bership chairperson Dave Kilbourn with 21per cent ringers.

Earning High Game Over Average was club treasurer Hazel Heistad who shot a 35 per cent game when her average was 13.75 per cent: over 21 per cent above her av-erage.

The Rimbey Spartans high school football team has capped off a perfect no loss season by bringing home the Provin-cial title.

The team traveled to the final round of provincials held at the University of Lethbridge last weekend, defeating Mill-wood Christian School 36 – 6.

Head coach Bill Bramfield is proud of his team, noting the boys came through the final game with flying colours.

“We actually held Millwood to six points. It was their first loss all year and they had been averaging 82 points per game.”

Bramfield is impressed with the qual-ity of play his team has demonstrated.

“For us, it went very well. We had quality of play on the field, the team was focused, well behaved and listened to the

coaches. It was clear they were there to play football.”

The Spartans won the first round of playoffs Nov. 8 when they went up against Holy Redeemer School from Ed-son and defeated them 57-22.

The second round of playoffs was against Ecole Descrochers School from Jasper and once again the Spartans emerged victorious, enjoying a 55-23 win.

The first and second rounds of play-offs were held in Lacombe.

Going through an entire season and the playoffs undefeated is not an easy feat and Bramfield credits his team for a job well done.

“We had the majority of our team back, the boys were prepared and our tal-ent pool was quite deep.”

Bramfield said The Spartans, who also won Provincials last year, are a plea-

sure to coach.“They are quality

people.”

Dear Editor,Courage comes in many shapes.There is courage we see when soldiers go

to war and we should all be grateful, but there is also the quiet everyday courage of people in our community facing personal challenges.

Sometimes they win these battles them-selves but we all know of times when the community has stepped forward with support when asked to do so.

A family in our community is in need of that support now.

The mom found the courage to remove herself from an abusive relationship and her teenage son, who will soon be joining them, is courageously living with a genetic condition called SMAD 4.

SMAD 4 is a life long condition that at-tacks the internal organs and frequently re-quires surgical intervention.

Two years ago this lad underwent surgery to remove his colon, but that has not proven beneficial.

He is now facing reconstructive surgery while he still has the physical strength to handle it.

Following the surgery he will be joining his mom and family in our community.

But this situation is even more compli-cated.

The lad is Canadian because his dad is Canadian (but lived in USA for sometime).

His mom has been working towards get-ting her Canadian Citizenship, but the process

has not yet been completed.The immigration department will not al-

low mom to be employed or receive health care or any government funding as of yet, but she is now to be her son’s sole support.

He will require 24-hour care while recov-ering from the surgery.

Over time our community has come to the aid of those in distress. Faced with this di-lemma, the mom, as a last resort, in order to care for her son, will welcome any support the community has to offer.

The immediate needs are medium size Depends, warm winter clothing, men’s large, size 13 shoes and a washing machine.

A future fundraiser is being planned in the New Year in the form of a spaghetti supper at

Dear Editor,What a wonderful job the road pa-

trol does. The members stand outside the elementary school in icy winds, snow, rain and sometimes blister-ing heat, to see their fellow students across the road safely.

The road they patrol is a hive of activity at 3:15 p.m. Both sides of the street, for three blocks, are lined with parked cars, some with engines running as parents wait to drive their children home.

Passing motorists cannot see the sidewalks.

As a former early childhood edu-cator, I was appalled to see two moth-ers dart out from behind parked cars to run across the road with two or three little ones in tow.

One mother was looking back over her shoulder talking to someone.

She didn’t appear to have seen my car.

The streets were icy.Why would these mothers ignore

the road patrol?They are there for your chil-

dren’s’ safety.When children are taught to fol-

low the rules and to respect the roles of others they become better citizens and in this case, safer ones.

One day these little ones will want to be on road patrol themselves.

I am sure the mothers will see it differently then.

Keep up the good work, patrol-lers.

Dear Editor,With all the recent defections from the Wildrose

party, it should be borne in mind that Joe Anglin did not really win in this constituency, but rather, that Ty Lund lost.

The Wildrose support was really a protest vote, which is ironic as it was the ultra right protesting against the right.

There isn’t actually anything very new in this; not like, for instance, if the defectors had gone to the Liberals, or the NDP. Now, that would have been something really newsworthy.

Small ‘c’ conservatism will rule this province for generations to come.

Let ‘s just hope Jim Prentice remembers that the ‘p’ in the PC party stands for progressive.

Club statistician Pearl Boettger keeps track of all regular league games and does the calculations for the year-end awards. Regular league play runs from about mid-May to mid-September, weather permitting.

Alberta Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association (AHPA) league crests are awarded annually for most of these accom-plishments in clubs who qualify. Bentley league champions get their names engraved on a club trophy.

The Bentley club is inviting more members to join in the fun and out-door exercise in the spring and is looking forward to hosting their 2015 tourna-ment on August 8 and 9.

For the twelfth consecutive year, The Rimbey Community Chorus, directed by Annette Boorman, will share its wonderful gift of music through a medley of joyous songs.

The concert, ‘Christmas Alleluia’ will be present-ed to the community on Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rimbey United Church.

Boorman explained the origins of the chorus.“Since 1988 our family has attended a week-long

by Rimbey Community Choruschoral music camp at Naramata, B.C. I had always enjoyed singing, but found the choral experience to be exhilarating. To take a sound that begins within you, share it with other singers, and hear it come back as something wonderful and thrilling is transformative. The chorus members synchronize their breath and harmonize their hearts in a cooperative effort.”

“I wanted more people to feel that sense of wonder and achievement, so I thought Rimbey should have a commu-nity chorus. The idea grew from there.”

Boorman said working with the chorus has more than met her expecta-tions.

“The chorus members bring a wide range of musical experience and train-ing. I am delighted with how, working together, we achieve great music and I think we also have a lot of fun. It is not a closed group and new members are al-ways welcome,” she added.

The chorus, comprised of more than 40 local singers, all drawn together by their love of music, has been practicing regularly since October under the di-rection of Boorman. Their selection of Christmas music promises to provide a truly uplifting evening.

Over the years many talented musi-

cians have accompanied their chorus. This year’s pianists, Grace Bennik and Charlotte Bonella, will be joined by Connie Jensen on drums.

The chorus has entertained the com-munity for almost three decades with a variety of musical evenings. Some of the singers have been part of the group since its onset, and new voices have been add-ed each year.

While each member is committed to giving his or her personal best to the chorus, credit is given to the director for her dedication, talent and unwavering commitment to bringing all the voices together in pleasing harmonies.

“We all like to sing, but without Annette’s expertise there wouldn’t be a chorus,” said Donna Pecharsky.

“Annette brings out the best in us,” agreed Florence Stemo.

Both ladies enjoy being part of the chorus, and the opportunity to share their love of singing.

“It is a wonderful way to remember the true meaning of Christmas with the community,” said Pecharsky.

There is no charge for admission to Christmas Alleluia, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

All donations will go to the Cana-dian Foodgrains Bank, a charity whose

funds are matched by the government.

During the winter, it’s easy to blame vehicular collisions on snow, ice and poor visibility. Rarely do drivers point the finger at themselves. Yet, the truth is, no matter how skilled drivers are, win-ter or summer, road safety depends largely on their driving attitude. “A lot of people don’t think they are part of the problem. They like to blame it on the other guy or the weather,” says Sharon Richards of Alberta Motor Association Driver Education.

These tips can help drivers make the right decisions on the road.

Stop tailgating In 2009 in Alberta,

driving too close was the number one reason for crashes involving a death or serious inju-ry. Many drivers may feel they are keeping a safe distance when they’re not. “The rule we recommend is one car length for ev-ery 10 kilometres per hour of speed,” says Rick Gardner, acting director/deputy chief of the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol. In icy winter condition the distance needs to be two to three times more.

Slow down When we get be-

hind the wheel of a car, strangely every minute seems to count and we recklessly dis-obey speed limits just to get to our destina-tion one minute ear-lier.

The risks of speed-ing increase during the winter as ice and snow drastically re-duce the ability of tires to grip the road. “On icy roads, every-thing your car does should be slower,” says Gardner. “If you try to change lanes too quickly on black ice, or make any quick adjustments, you will lose control.”

Plan your route Before leaving on

a trip during the win-ter, plan your route and give yourself lots

of time to reach your destination. Paul Oss, a public affairs officer with Alberta Transportation, also suggests you let someone know where you’re going, your planned route, destination and expected time of arrival. In the true spirit of the season, the Bethlehem Walk will be held again in Rimbey, symbolizing in a special and unique way, the Christmas story.

The walk is to be held Sun. Dec 7 at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. and will take place at the Alliance Church property on 54th Ave.

The walk will take modern day travelers to several stations where actors dressed in appropri-ate costumes will do their part to depict the walk Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem where the baby Jesus was born.

The age-old Biblical story is re-created through the help of local farmers who bring in hay and live animals as well as through a sound system and special lighting.

The walk begins appropriately with an actor portraying Mary who is holding the baby Jesus in the manger. The angel Gabriel also makes an appearance at that time.

Actors dressed as Caesar and some dressed as tax collec-tors accept monetary and food donations for the food bank at the second station.

And, the third sta-tion is set up as an inn where there is no va-cancy.

The fourth station is a shepherds’ camp where those participating in the walk can sit on straw bales and shepherds mill about talking about the wonders they have seen.

The Christian Reform Church choir dressed in white robes portraying angels singing of Jesus’ birth make the fifth station a truly magnificent,

awe inspiring part of the walk.And finally, in the lowly

manger in the hay is the baby Jesus, the three wise men and Mary and Joseph, surrounded by livestock which concludes the Christmas story and the Bethle-hem walk.

Dawna Providenti, one of the many people who help organize the event and is also one of the actors said the walk is a wonder-ful way to spread the Christmas message.

“It’s amazing. It’s disap-pointing when it is over. To see

that many people come together and the repre-sentation from all the churches is wonder-ful. We have brought together a really nice night for the Christian community.”

Spectators are wel-come to come into the church for refresh-ments following each of the performances. Stuart Lyster will also provide hayrides for the children.

Mom wants to see sonhome for Christmas

Melisa Crawford has one wish for Christ-mas.

She wants to bring her 15-year-old son, Khailnn Burdock home.

Before Khailnn began having serious health issues, he was a football star whose husky build gave him a great advantage on the field. Football is the love of his life, and he soon proved to be a natural on the field.

Sadly, the foot-ball jersey is much too big now, hanging loosely on a body that has shrunk to only 108 pounds.

On Jan. 21, 2013, after many painful tests and visits to the doctor, Khailnn underwent a colectomy due to juve-nile polyposis. While in the hospital, he was diagnosed with SMAD 4, a gene mutation that attacks the internal or-gans and frequently requires surgical inter-vention.

On Dec, 3 the teen-ager will undergo re-constructive surgery again at the Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. The surgery, if successful, will mean he will no longer have to have an ileostomy bag.

Crawford plans to be by her son’s side at the hospital, and is de-termined to bring him home for Christmas.

“I know I’ll have him home for Christ-mas,” she said, her eyes welling up with tears. “I know I will.”

Crawford, a 34-year-old mother of five will stay at the Ronald McDonald House during her son’s stay in the hospital.

A dark haired wom-an with a gentle voice and a soft, sad smile, she tells her story, qui-etly, haltingly, often wiping away tears, about how she came to Bluffton, Alberta, es-caping an abusive rela-tionship and trying des-perately to start over.

Crawford’s life seems to be one of on-

going challenges and roadblocks, made in-creasingly difficulty by immigration laws and rules and regulations she doesn’t understand.

Born in the United States, she met her Ca-nadian born soon to be husband when she was only 14 while staying with a sister in Brit-ish Columbia. She be-came intimate with the young man, who was a few years older than herself, and before long found herself pregnant. She gave birth to a pre-mature little boy at the Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and moved back home to the U.S. with her family.

However, the fa-ther of her little boy came out later for a visit and, as fate would have it, the two ended up exchanging wedding vows.

Melisa was 15-years-old.

Four children and several years later, the family moved back to Canada, settling in Nanaimo, B.C. due to Khalnn’s health prob-lems.

It was later discov-ered that another son, Christian also carries the SMAD 4 gene and will need surgery.

And to make mat-ters worse, a physician at the Cancer Institute in Vancouver told Meli-sa herself that she was also positive for the SMAD 4 gene.

Meanwhile the situ-ation between Melisa and her husband was steadily going from bad to worse and the young woman suffered con-stantly from bullying and verbal abuse. Al-though her husband had never hit her, she lived in constant terror that it was only a matter of time until he did.

“It seemed that no matter what I did I couldn’t get through to him, and he was get-ting angrier, nastier and more volatile by the minute.”

In desperation she had thoughts of taking her children and mov-ing back to South Car-

olina to live with her family.

In the end, with no money, scared and alone, she left her chil-dren with their father, as he did not appear to be abusive to them and she felt they would be safe.

She knew she had to leave, but it was a heart wrenching decision.

“The guilt and stress were overwhelm-ing and I hated myself, but deep down inside I also knew that if I stayed and couldn’t get him to stop hurt-ing me, I would wind up in a mental hospital, or worse yet, fly into a blind rage and kill someone.”

The final straw came when her hus-band, after telling her she had 15 minutes to pack up and say good-bye to her children, physically pushed her out the door, leaving her with nothing but the clothes on her back and her wallet.

With the help of a caring friend, who is now her partner, she found her way to Bluff-ton, and was able to find work for a short while. However, as she is not a Canadian citi-zen and does not have a work visa, she was forced to quit.

“The immigration department will not al-low me to work or re-ceive any health care or social assistance,” she said.

Since moving to Bluffton, her 13-year-old son Sean has moved in with her. The other children remain with their father, but she hoping to have them all with her one day.Continued on Page 12

Santa’s Anonymous Time AgainOnce again the Christmas season is fast ap-

proaching and the Alder Flats, Buck Lake and Winfield Santa’s Anonymous committee is gear-ing up to help needy families.

The group’s man-date is to help make the Christmas season better for local fami-lies, those who don’t have the means to put a Christmas dinner on the table or buy gifts for their children.

We are collecting non perishable food items, unwrapped gifts and monetary dona-tions throughout Alder Flats, Buck Lake and Winfield. There will be donation boxes and tins at a variety of businesses and schools in the area and we would be grateful for any donations you feel would be appropriate.

The food and gift hampers are customized for each family who will receive staple items such as cereal, canned goods, flour, sugar, tea, coffee, juice, rice and pasta. We will add perishable items just prior to delivery of a turkey or ham, potatoes, buns and Christmas oranges. Our primary goal

is to provide food for the families to help carry them through December which can be a difficult month for people on a reduced budget. We also like to include some basic necessities such as

soap, shampoo, tooth-paste, toothbrushes and gloves or socks. Lastly, we include a gift or two for each family member. Everything is packed into brightly wrapped Christmas boxes and delivered a few days be-fore Christmas.

Recipients are re-ferred via self referrals, social agencies, schools and churches. We only send hampers to people

who are referred to us for the 2014 season. If you know someone who needs extra help this year and would like to refer them please contact one of the above agencies or call Lois Gilbertson at 780-682-2388 or Marian Whitby at 780-388-3774 before the first week in December. The donation boxes will be collected approximately December 13th.

(nee MacWhirter) June 23, 1915 - Nov. 17, 2014

Mary was born to Mary Sutherland and Norman MacWhirter in Norwich, Ontario. She served overseas as a Nursing Sister in WW II where she met Joseph Stauffer, whom she would marry in 1947. They lived in Galt, Ontario where their

children Judy and Tom were born. Most of their married life was spent in Aurora, Ontario, where Mary was active in the Aurora United Church and the community while she and Joseph (“JG”) raised their family. She loved summers at the family cottage on Canning Lake, Haliburton. In 2011, at the age of 96, Mary moved to Alberta to be closer to Judy and family. There the adventure continued, with new great-grandchildren to welcome, many happy times, and continuing contact with old friends in the East.Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Joe in 2002, and her cherished son Tom in 2003; also by her sister Jean Cranston and infant brother Donald. She was a loving mother to Judy Stauffer of Rimbey, Alberta; and an amazingly adored mother-in-law of John Hull. She was a treasured “Grandma” and grandma-in-law to: Kathleen Hull-Beagle and Kent Beagle of Rimbey, AB; Emily Hull and Ben Moore of Victoria, BC; and Adam Hull and Natalie Wuitchik Hull of Vancouver, BC. She was “Mamie” to seven great-grandchildren: Tavish, Cameron, Hudson and Josie Beagle; Nora and Molly Moore; and Linden Hull; and step-grandma and great-grandma to Justine and Lily Bryant of Victoria, BC. She is also survived by sister-in-law Isabelle Stauffer of Cambridge, ON and the Stauffer nieces and nephews.Mary will be missed by family and dear friends of all ages, and remembered for her warm heart, great kindness, superb fashion sense, unfailing good humour, and enduring friendships. In her 99 years, she met life’s challenges with a grace and strength. She brought out the best in us.A memorial service will be held at Rimbey United Church, Rimbey, AB on Monday, Nov. 24. at 11 AM. HEAGY, Marvin1947 - 2014

Mr. Marvin Earl Heagy of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving children and beloved grandchildren, at his home on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the age of 67 years. Marvin was born on April 11, 1947 at Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan to parents, Earl and Grace Heagy. He spent the majority of his childhood years on the family farm, until his parents retired from farming and moved into the town of Rockglen, Saskatchewan, at the age of fourteen. Marvin was a bright young man, graduating in 1964 as the youngest graduate in his class. He was too young to enroll in University, so he took his skills and

knowledge right into the work force. Rockglen was where he met the love of his life, Linda. Marvin and Linda were married in 1968 and blessed with three children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. The family relocated several times following Marvin’s Oilfi eld Career. In 1980, the family moved to Rimbey making it ‘Home’. In 1991, Marvin built Linda her castle in their paradise, on what they referred to as ‘the farm’, west of Rimbey. The oil patch kept the family thriving and Marvin being self-employed worked passionately to provide for his family for the past fi fty years, the majority of those years with Precision Drilling. Marvin was a kind and gentle man who was easy to converse with and build a friendship. He made new friends wherever he traveled and always had a pit stop along the way. Marvin was a leader and a role model showing his commitment to hard work and being part of his community; from Boy Scout Leader, Fast-ball, Slow-pitch, Curling Club and Golfer. The skill set was there too - scoring an eight ender in curling and making a couple hole-in-ones. When Marvin was home from work, he enjoyed the comforts of home. He was a great chef and took much pride in his garden. Marvin also enjoyed his ‘male bonding’ getaways with his friends at their cabin out west. This male sport was commonly referred to as ‘Hunting’. He also was a great card player and looked forward to meeting the boys in town for a coffee when he was at home. He was an avid sports fan and was passionate about his Saskatchewan Rough Riders. If the Grey Cup was in the West, Marvin and Linda would often go to the football games; as well as Curling Events. Marvin would never shy away from a good rum, a party or a hockey draft. The joy of his heart was his grandchildren. He LOVED them! Even through his illness when Marvin was unable to speak, his eyes lit up and his arms opened wide when the kids came in the room. Marvin will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his three children, David Heagy of Drayton Valley, Alberta; Sherri (Rod) Ryckman of Red Deer; and Brent (Naomi) Heagy of Fort McMurray, Alberta; as well as six cherished grandchildren; Anesea (Ryan), Lindsey, Taryn, Faith, Quinn, and Brodie; and one treasured great grandson, Weston. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his mother, Grace Heagy of Rockglen, Saskatchewan; his brothers, Garry (Elizabeth) Heagy of St. Clements, Ontario and Steve (Eileen) Heagy of Winfi eld, Alberta; his sisters, Edith Spagrud of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Shirley (Bruce) Bender of Pine Lake, Alberta and Peggy (Clifford) Ching of Slave Lake, Alberta; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and a host of dear friends. Marvin was predeceased by his loving wife of forty-six years, Linda Heagy, his father, Earl Heagy and brothers, Earl Jr. and Ralph Heagy. Amendment to Land Use By-Law 7-08-LU

The Council of Ponoka County has been asked by Kelvin and Jennifer Jones to amend Land Use By-Law 7-08-LU as follows:

Reclassify portion of NW 12-43-01-W5 (approximately 5.0 acres total) from Agricultural District to Country Residential District to allow for future subdivision of the rezoned area.

Before considering the by-law, Council will hold a Public Hearing at which any person claiming to be affected may ask questions or make comments. This hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 in the Council Chambers of the County Administration Building.
