Why reread books? The more a child reads a book again the better he/she will be at reading. The more a child sees and reads a book the more likely the child is going to recognize the words thatwere at first unfamiliar and the more confident your child will feel about reading. The more one prac-

tices something, the better one gets at doing it. One needs to practice over and over again how to tieshoes or how to ride a bicycle. The same thing is true with reading. The more a child reads the betterthat child gets at reading. If a child doesnt practice especially at home they will continue to struggle.Make the time you spend listening to your child read a fun time and a special time with you. Acting outthe story together can make it a fun time. Hopefully, during these times your child will find a joy inreading and will find a favorite type of book they like to read and will eventually just want to read ontheir own for fun. Then we will have all succeeded in our mission to make all children life long readers!Family Science Night is Tuesday Nov. 19th 5:30-7:30.

Family Science Night on Tues. Nov. 19 Keep this date in mind, we will be having a Family ScienceNight on Tues. Nov. 19 from 5:30-7:30.

To continue reinforcing the Rules to Tattling from lastyear, we read the storybook Dont Squeal Unless Its aBig Deal. I like this story because it seems pretty simplefor the students to understand there are problems thatare truly kid sized that they could try to solve on theirown first and then there are problems that are a BigDeal from the very beginning that require help from anadult. The story really encourages the reader to be aproblem solver before telling an adult about it. It alsobreaks the situations down that are considered an emer-gency such as someone is hurt, someone is hurting them, someone is hurting animals/pets, destroying property, etc. These are situations that our students are encour-aged to come for help right away. To help them furtherdistinguish between kid sized and big deal problems, weplayed an activity with situation cards and asked them toidentify which of the two. Both the teachers and thestudents really enjoyed the story as well as the activity.

You can reinforce these concepts at home by using thesame language with your child if you are finding that tat-tling is a problem amongst your children.

If a person or animal is in danger, youmust warn someone.

If the problem involves you, take chargeand try hard to solve it yourself first.

Is the problem a Now problem or aNot Now problem? Can your problembe solved at a later time?

If the problem is not dangerous and isdoes not involve you.

    DO NOT TATTLE

For the month of October, our character word we learnedabout was Respect. We learned that Respectful studentslook for the good things their friends are doing instead oflooking for the bad things to tattle on. Ask anyone whoworks with young children to name the problem they strugglewith the most, and more often than not, tattling tops thelist. In order for tattling to not turn into a habit, childrenmustdevelop the ability to discern between a situation thatcan be taken care of independently versus an urgent, moreserious situationthat calls for adult assistance. To helpstudents discover alternatives to tattling, weread a storytitled, A BAD CASE OF THE TATTLE TONGUE andlearnedthe rules totattling. Wealso played the game Pin the Faceon theTattletale to practice the rules. Here are theruleswe are trying to follow

I hope you have enjoyed reading and doing the activi-ties from the first Chapter of My Wonderful PAXSchoolwith your child. For the month of October wefocused on Chapter 1. If your child completed Chapter1 and returned it to his/her teacher, they received100 PAX minutes to add to their class total. SoGREAT job! Starting in November, your child will onceagain be bringing his/her book home to begin workingon Chapter 2. I love the enthusiasm our students areputting into PAX!

Respect is a basic building block for all other character lessons. When stu-

dents respect themselves and others their behavior and atude make it easi-

er for them to display all the other posive character traits. These students

display this character trait on a daily basis and are great role models for all of

    us. Great job Riley students!
