(Data) Acquisition RILA is a suite of train mounted sensors
for rapid acquisition of survey data that negates the need for surveyors to be on or near the track in the acquisition of the data.
RILA survey data supports a range of topographical survey, gauging and infrastructure monitoring applications for asset management, maintenance and engineering design.

Running multiple times in both directions also densifies the LiDAR point cloud.

RILA 360 Technology
RILA 360 laser operates simultaneously with the track system and scans objects and features within the rail corridor in a “what you see is what you get mode” As data is captured multiple times in both directions there are very few occluded or shadowed areas.
Complex algorithms combine the various individual runs into a single homogenous cloud.

RILA is also equipped with an integrated video system.
Video is acquired from a three lens camera array with a 170 degree field of view. The video is georeferenced and can be viewed in most media players, via an on-line portal or stored as individual JPGs with associated world reference files.

Coverage / Completeness • GPS loss in tunnels, deep cuttings and in
urban corridors – supplement with ground control (targets, spheres on spigots etc) or tie in to recent ground topo
• Train pathing – on passenger services at the mercy of the paths given to particular services. Loss of data at stations with multiple platforms. Unlikely to record loops, sidings etc. – supplement where necessary with other sources of data (drones, static laser scanning, road/rail or trolley based mobile mapping systems.

Conclusion
RILA can supply clearly defined benefits: • Speed of Acquisition • Health and Safety through removal of survey personnel
from the track • Data that can be used for range of asset management
and design applications • Mode of acquisition promotes capture once and use
many times ethos. Constraints need to be managed accordingly: • Relatively small areas of occluded or substandard data
compared with track length captured. • Operational issues ever present but diminishing with
experience and track record • Survey specifications need to be prepared with
consideration to potential data volumes.
