Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome to our Rights List Spring 2016!We are very pleased to inform you of all that is new this season: First of all, we celebrate our Lieselotte’s 10th anniversary with a particularly gorgeous new birthday edition in picture book. Liliane Susewind and the Dino Wheelies are also back with brand-new stories; and there are other compelling sequels as well as exciting new stand-alones. Meet Luna-Lila, for example – the perfect (imaginary or not?) companion a girl might have … or the Hempels – a little people with great hearts (and somewhat peculiar appetites).

In YA/All Age, there is the long awaited finale of Kay Meyer’s trilogy “The World’s Pages” – “The Blood Book”. Last but not least, we are pleased to present very special non-fiction books (watch out for “Vegan – the Why and Wherefore”) as well as new board books and educational titles to you. In short, there is something for everyone on this list – and we would be happy to provide you with special recommendations!

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any query you might have. We would also be delighted to see you at the Bologna Book Fair: You will find our stand in Hall 30, B39.

With kindest wishes, your FISCHER Foreign Rights team in children’s books:

Elke Fuhrmann ([email protected]) Esther Mallm ([email protected]) Ilka Wesche ([email protected])

Congratulations Lieselotte – On 10 years of picture book fun!

Lieselotte is looking forward to her birthday party with all of her friends. But everything remains strangely quiet. Is no one making preparations? The farmer’s wife has not baked a cake, the garden is not decorated and the chickens are busy doing other things.

Does nobody remember that it’s her birth- day? Sadly, she gathers together some candles, puts on last year’s birthday hat and secretly takes some biscuits from the kitchen. All on her own, she wanders down to the stream. But what’s that? All her friends are waiting there for her to congratulate her. The day turns into a fabulous party!

> Eagerly anticipated: A new story with the most popular picture book cow > Birthday: A favourite topic in picture books

Picture book

It’s Prince Emil’s birthday. Will he finally get a pet? After an extra big portion of crackling pea puree and three golden mugs of hot chocolate for breakfast, some- thing is mightily bubbling in his belly. With a long toot, a fart escapes him. Oops!

Unfortunately, Emil then gets nothing but boring presents: a remotely controlled castle ghost, a fully automatic monster-molecular-knight-robot – even though all he wants is a pet! The prince is not happy at all. And his farts become increasingly loud and stinky. A big cloud of stinky farts floats outside and directly hits a flying tyrannosaurus shriex. It passes out and drops down right in front of the prince. There it is, the mega strong pet he has been wishing for!

I’m big. I’m brave.I’m on my way. > A turbulent family story with poignant and funny illustrations

Bo is very angry. He tore his shoelace, one of his action figures has disappeared and now there is broccoli (!) for lunch. That’s it! Bo is moving out. –

His tent is lopsided but Bo doesn’t care. It’s getting dark and cold but he still doesn’t care. But hang on, what was that rustling noise? His sister is moving out as well (!!) and crawling into his tent. Even Mum and Dad are coming. That’s it! Bo is going back into the house. –

Suddenly the doorbell rings. And who is waiting in front of the door? The entire family …

Bernd Kohlhepp pointedly sets the right tone and convincingly tells the story of a little hero on his way to growing up.

Strong girls, close friendship, loveable story! > Start of a four-volume series > two great, successful authors > Bicoloured illustrations

Luna-Lila is the very best friend Wilma could have wished for: Luna-Lila has tons of crazy ideas, is not afraid of anything and is – despite her allergy to pink – a true princess. The absolute best about Luna-Lila is: She lives in Wilma’s room! That no one except Wilma can see her, well … that’s actually not a bad thing sometimes. Together, Wilma and Luna-Lila will show the mean class bullies Ulli and Olli who is in charge here at school.

Anu and Friedbert Stohner wrote this children’s book which all little girls will love: cheeky, loveable and so funny it will make you smile and giggle!

Dust? Fluff? Bread crumbs? Grains of sand? No! Hempels! Hempels are thumb-sized people dressed in blue. They take the shape of their surroundings when they do not move. And they love cucum-bers of all kinds.

One of the Hempels becomes Jakob Herzberg’s invisible friend. He encoura-ges Jakob and is always there for him. Jakob can absolutely rely on him. There-fore, it is understood that Jakob leaves no stone unturned to rescue his little friend from terrible difficulties.

It is a story with endearing characters and it will certainly make you hesitate next time you do the hoovering: Is that dust or the Hempels?

Every Thursday is dragon day. On Thursdays, Jakob has to carefully crochet horrible chain stitches. On top of that, there is the grumbling of the handicrafts teacher, Mrs. Dragon, who does credit to her name! One Thursday, a huge row is threatening: Jakob has secretly brought his rat to school. And of all lessons, it chooses the dragon hour to go off and do some exploring on its own. That’s sure to go well!

The “Dumplings”, who are the arch-rivals of the Football Sharks, have a new player: Hans is a great football player but his hostile comments towards foreigners cause a bad mood in the neigh-bourhood. When all of a sudden emergency shelters for African refugees are set up in the neighbourhood, the situation threatens to get out of hand. Pedro and his friends have to do something!

The Football Sharks are the multicultural kickers from Berlin who cause ripples on every football ground and turn their opponents into fish fingers! Goalkeeper Zachi is suddenly no longer able to catch any ball and he simply disappears in the middle of the training! When Pedro and the others secretly follow him, they can hardly believe it: Zachi is playing for another team! But why?

Actually, Bo, Tanka and Pukki wanted to travel only ten minutes back in time with Major Hix’ time machine to help a little dog. But the pitfalls of technology cause them to land in the Middle Ages! To make matters worse, the time machine is now broken. Maybe they can find the spare part in a castle. There is only one problem: The castle’s inhabitants think they are dangerous fire-breathing dragons …

Original, funny and thrilling: A fun read for small and big fans of dinosaurs!

“A masterpiece of pictorial art.” FAZ

the groundbreaking children’s book classic

Hannes Binder, born in 1947, stu-died at Zurich’s School of Art and Design and worked as gra-phic artist in Mi-lano and Ham-burg. Nowadays,

he lives as a freelance illustrator and painter in Zurich. His works of art are known for expertly maste-ring the scratchboard technique.

Berlin in the 1930s: Erwin Brackmann and his friend Paul Rich-ter are members of a backstreet gang that are thick as thieves. With an atmospheric language and true to life, Lisa Tetzner tells the story of how the children have to work hard for a football but almost go to prison, and how they admit a girl from the front-building to the gang – against all their principles.

“The only contemporary, realistic and deeply pacifistically spi-rited depiction of historic events in a children’s book written in the Third Reich.” Die Zeit

Cruelty, poverty and exploitation – that’s what boys suffered from, when they risked their lives as chimney sweeps in the 19th century in Milano. Lisa Tetzner’s famous novel “The Black Broth- ers” tells their story. The expressive images by the Swiss artist give an unbelievable, unique effect to the story and fascinate readers and critics.

“An exciting graphic novel with dark images that resemble woodcut prints.” Die Zeit“Illustrations of impressive beauty.” Süddeutsche Zeitung

When all excuses don’t help anymore and the children from his class finally want to see the bear, Henry is flabbergasted when, all of a sudden, a bear lumbers around in his garden.

Mr. Kubin invented the broom, the clothesline and the umbrella. Not very many people know this. Beautiful Agatha doesn’t know it either, which is a great pity, indeed: After all, it was only for the love of her, that Mr. Kubin made all these inventions. But since he is not only very much in love with her, but also rather shy, he doesn’t dare to speak to Agatha. Timur decides to take the bashful inventor by the hand and help him win his love.

The story of Robinson Crusoe is one of the most enthralling adventures of world literature – and one of the classics of children’s literature. More than 200 years ago, Johann David Wyss created a robinsonade for children which became an international success. Instead of the lonely Robinsons, with Wyss, a Swiss family of six runs ashore and, with many years of work, turns the island wilderness into a comfor-table domicile. When finally there is the chance to return to civilization, the family has to make up their mind: Shall they – once again – leave everything behind?

Peter Stamm has retold Wyss’ adventure novel with caution and full of respect but determined and in his own verbal subtlety.

Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is supposed to be performed at a school. The drama group soon realizes how current this play about the trials and tribulations of love, betrayal and intrigue still is today: Imperceptibly, the action of the play and the fate of those involved get more and more intertwined …

In a very special way, Tanya Lieske man-ages to show the modernity and eternal significance of Shakespeare’s subject matter and motifs in her novel for young adults!
