EVERY LATVIAN TOWN HAS ITS ‘LOGO’...

...SO DOES RIGA...

...BUT WHAT CAN BE SAID OF RIGA’S NEIGHBOURHOOD BRANDS?

• Currently they are only verbal• Not universally known or accepted• Not visual• Not related to spatial organisation parameters

(e.g., postal codes)

> Every Riga neighbourhood has the right to brand!

VISION: 58 RIGA NEIGHBOURHOOD LOGOS BY 2014

• Logos developed by a professional design team• A proactive approach: first the designers develop logo

proposals, then residents critique them • Active citizen involvement: crowdsourcing, discussion forums,

interactive surveys, neighbourhood meetings and simulation games

• Neighbourhood residents have many opportunities to discuss the neighbourhood brand

• Neighbourhood logos comply with a set of visual guidelines and references to Riga (e.g. Riga keys)

• The development of logo focuses a neighbourhood’s identity, uniting in the process various ethnic, age and income groups

• Neighbourhood logos are unofficial and can be created privately, without municipality involvement (cf. Art Lebedev and the Moscow Metro)

However, let us not forget:• City brands are built over centuries; we can initiate the

process• No need to take neighbourhood brands and identities too

seriously, as we are all Rigans
