TRIP HABITATSThe Península Valdés is located on the Patagonian coast in the province of Chubut. A geographical accident resulting in a perfect habitat and haven for extraordinary fauna and flora, it was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Its biggest attraction is the Southern Right Whale that migrates there every year for breeding and calving. Amongst other protected species we also encounter guanaco, rhea, Magellanic penguins and migratory marine birds, and the endemic Patagonian Mara almost exclusively found on the Península. We enjoy a private sea kayak expedition to discover and experience close encounters with the best of Patagonia’s marine wildlife. Our adventure features days on pristine Patagonian waters and nights under starry skies and the Southern Cross. FULL TRIP ITINERARY

KEY (to what’s included daily) B = breakfast L = lunch D = dinner

Day 1 - BUENOS AIRES Morning arrival from the USA with American Airlines and reception by a driver and your personal Riding In Patagonia Tour Representative who will be with you for your whole trip, followed by transport in a private air-conditioned van to the Legado Mitico Hotel (normally an hour’s drive). Legado Mitico is a stylish and elegant hotel consisting of just eleven rooms, located in the heart of the hip Palermo District of Buenos Aires, home to fantastic restaurants and boutique clothing stores. A free day follows to relax and explore some of Buenos Aires city with the company of your Riding In Patagonia representative if you wish. We can head off to the Recoleta area and its designer shops and restaurants, and of course the must-see Recoleta Cemetery (the resting place of Eva Peron). You may wish to head to the bohemian San Telmo district, home to tall colonial buildings, numerous antique stores, restaurants and cafes ... this is where the heart of the tango beats at the famous San Telmo Sunday market. You will have some time to relax before we head out for a first Argentinean steak in the evening.

Room at Legado Mitico Hotel is category Superior, bed and breakfast rate. Lunches and dinners are not included in Buenos Aires.

Day 2 - TO THE PATAGONIAN ATLANTIC (B, L, D ) After breakfast, you leave Legado Mitico for Buenos Aires’ domestic airport, Jorge Newbury, twenty minutes away in a private air-conditioned van, to fly to either Puerto Madryn or Trelew (depending on the day of the week, we have the option to fly to Puerto Madryn which is closer to our destination) with your Riding In Patagonia representative. Our arrival will be greeted by a Riding In Patagonia Nature Explorers Guide to drive out to the small village of Puerto Piramides, the only town within the Peninsula Valdes Nature Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey takes about two hours in our 4x4 from Trelew, and a little over one hour from Puerto Madryn. Upon arrival we check into the Eco Lodge Del Nomade, a simple yet inspiring hotel which won a prestigious award in 2012: the Eco Lodge was awarded first prize in a contest for the 'greenest hotel in Argentina', read here how they did it! www.hotelmasverde.com.ar. We will have time to relax and talk a wander around the small town of Puerto Piramides and some lunch before a meeting later in the afternoon where we talk over, in detail, our next few days, our expedition in the field, and our gear. In the early evening we finally get out onto the water for a Sunset Whale Watching Trip to have our first encounter with the Southern Right Whale. This is an extremely informative excursion which will wet the appetite for the next few days to come. After a Welcome to Patagonia Dinner we will be ready for bed!

Room at Del Nomade is category Double En Suite, bed and breakfast rate. Lunches and dinners are included in Patagonia (less alcoholic drinks).

Day 3 - KAYAK EXPEDITION BEGINS (B, L, D ) After an early breakfast we leave the town of Puerto Pirámides in our 4x4 vehicle, towing our kayaks, and drive through the Pensinsula Valdes Reserve to the coast of   the Golfo San Jose, where we will begin our kayaking adventure. Unless you are a very experienced paddler you will share a sturdy two-man kayak. We will be leaving bags we don't need for the adventure at the Eco Lodge. During the drive we can spot some of the terrestrial species that make a visit to Peninsula Valdes so special, such as groups of guanaco (lama) and ostrich (Darwin’s Rhea) which can be seen in the arid steppe by the roadside. Finally, we arrive at our Whales Camp, a very special bay between two headlands, where whales come close to the shore at high tide. We will have the opportunity to learn more about the whales, and enjoy some quality time to observe their behaviour.

Depending on conditions, we will go out for our first paddle this day, returning to Whales Camp to sleep. After organizing our gear and kayaks we will have safety briefing to get well familiarized with our expedition kayaks, and once on the water we can start enjoying the beauty of this wild coast. We will paddle along an area with high cliffs to a small beach where we will have lunch. The area is shaped with hills and a unique coastline that allows us to paddle very close to the shoreline of marine platforms, compact marine sedimentary rock, known as 'restingas' that is inhabited by oystercatchers, cormorants, black crowned herons and other birds. We will pass natural caves where we can observe varied fossil marine life forms that inhabited this sea literally million of years ago.

We will pass by a Southern Sea Lion colony, where the sea lions dive into the water to come and greet us. Sea lions are very curious and social marine mammals, they will approach our kayaks, swimming around and under our kayaks and after this when will start paddling they will follow us! We will visit different bays and can get out of our kayaks for a snack and hike to take a look from up on the the cliffs at our route for the next few days. We can also observe some of the migratory shorebirds that land to feed and rest; such as Red Knot Plover and Sandpipers. During the sunset we will paddle back to our wilderness camp to enjoy our first dinner under this magical southern hemisphere sky.

We provide two man tents, therm-a-rest mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags. Meals and wine are included during expeditions. We tend to stick with red wine rather than white as have no fridge!

Day 4 - CAMP BAHIA ENCANTADA (THE ENCHANTED BAY) (B, L, D ) After breakfast and the loading of our kayaks we say goodbye to Whales Camp. We will be paddling along an extensive area of high cliffs until we reach Fracasso Bay, where at low tide, a huge section of the beach remains exposed (a slough). This is an area where many shore birds feed in sand flats, which are exposed during low tide, such as Two-banded plover, Lesser Yellowlegs, and Bird’s sandpiper. Also in this wetland migratory shorebirds stop to rest and feed during their long journey from the Arctic down to Tierra del Fuego. Kayaking westward we enjoy an area of sandy beaches that alternate with cliffs and restingas. Along the journey we are likely to have some encounters with Southern Right Whales, usually mothers and calves that follow the coastline very close to the shore. We later reach the Enchanted Bay were we set up camp, at one of the best places to observe whales close to the shore. In the afternoon we will have time to relax, socialize and enjoy dinner accompanied by pure and wild nature.

Day 5: CAMP BAHIA ENCANTADA (B, L, D ) Today we will take time to explore this special area and take a hike up the sand dunes to observe different archaeological remains of the ancient Tehuelches (the Patagonian indians). We will have the opportunity to go out kayaking, birdwatching or simply relax.

Day 6: KAYAKING ENDS AND PENSINSULA TOUR (B, L, D ) After breakfast and breaking down of camp we will paddle to our final destination. Once the kayak expedition is completed and we have loaded up our gear, we enjoy a land tour around the external coast of the Península reaching the eastern shores where we can see the Atlantic Ocean. This seemingly barren Peninsula (to the untrained eye), is actually bursting with wildlife.  We will visit the Estancia San Lorenzo and visit a penguin colony, home to around 200,000 Magellanic Penguins. These penguins start to arrive in August of each year to breed and depart in April with their chicks. We later return to Puerto Piramides for a welcome shower at the Eco Lodge and a last farewell dinner in Puerto Piramides, before departure the next day for the Andes mountain range.

Day 7: TO THE ANDES (B, D ) After breakfast we set off in our 4x4 for a travel day to El Calafate. From the 1st of November we have a direct flight from Trelew to El Calafate, although in October we must fly via Buenos Aires (Puerto Madryn or Trelew to Buenos Aires and then Buenos Aires to El Calafate). We arrive in El Calafate to a dramatic change of scenery and your first sighting of Lago Argentino, Argentina’s largest lake. Following reception by our driver, we will head straight for the Relias & Chateaux Hotel Eolo, where we will check in for four nights (or five nights if you wish to extend) and a huge pampering. We will spend the rest of the day relaxing.

Room at Eolo is category ‘Superior Suite’, all meals and on-site activities are included during your stay (less alcoholic drinks).

Day 8: THE PERITO MORENO GLACIER (B, L, D ) We will enjoy a leisurely morning on the this day and after lunch, will be picked up by our driver and guide to visit the Los Glaciares National Park, reached via the Península Magallenes. We will visit the Perito Moreno Glacier viewing platforms, and experience up-close this absolutely vast and indescribable blue river of ancient ice. Afternoon timing allows for good lighting and less people, as most groups depart by the late afternoon, so we will wait a little to set off after lunch at Eolo. You may also enjoy the 1km hike along the park’s metal walkway to the viewing platforms to absorb the immensity of the lake and a different perspective of the extraordinary ice.

Day 9: RELAX (B, L, D )A free day at Eolo to relax and explore, take part in activities or enjoy the spa, or, if you wish to go back to the Los Glaciares National Park, you can add an excursion such as ‘Mini Ice Trekking’ or even ‘Big Ice’. Glacier activities such as Big Ice or a boat trip to the Lago Argentino may be added at Eolo with the help of their very friendly and knowledgable activities coordinator (these activities are not included).

Day 10: RIDING IN PATAGONIA (B, L, D )On our final day in Argentina, we can go shopping in Calafate, and will be enjoying a private riding excursion with a picnic. Our passion, riding in Patagonia, is a perfect way to appreciate Patagonia's wide open spaces, colours and scenery and the chance for some photography.

Day 11: DEPARTURE FOR USA (B )After breakfast we transfer to El Calafate Airport for your flights to Buenos Aires and the USA. After some sad farewells with your Riding In Patagonia Tour Representative, you will board a plane back to the big City of Buenos Aires. There you will be met by another Riding In Patagonia Representative to transfer out to the international airport in a private air-conditioned van (1 hour approx.) to await your homeward bound flight to the USA. Buen Viaje and we hope to see you again!

Day 12: ARRIVAL IN USA

TRIP NOTESKayaking and trekking... Physical challenge rating: LOW to MODERATE- Client to guide ratio: 4:1, minimum group size: two people- Maximum group size per guide in single kayaks: 4:1 + assistant guide - Maximum group size per guide in double kayaks: 8:1 + assistant guide- Qualified expedition guides, all group camping and cooking gear, all group equipment, kayaks, paddles, etc.

Important notes:- Tides - there is a big difference between high and low tide, with an average of 4m difference. This means you may have to move

kayaks (on land) a fair distance, occasionally up to 200m, we all work together so be prepared to help!- The weather and particularly the wind are the factors that influence navigation. For this reason the distances we plan to cover

each day may have to be modified: one day being shorter and another longer. A detailed daily itinerary will be available upon request, but it is to be understood that changes to itinerary will be made due to weather conditions. For this reason we may on occasion have to camp in the same location longer than planned, or enjoy trekking rather than paddling

- Special laws and norms exist to observe the marine mammals of the Península Valdes, but the concept basically is: we adapt to their behavior and not them to us; we must respect a certain distance to achieve this. Regarding the Southern Right Whale - we have a high chance of observing them during the journey and especially in certain areas (season - September to mid December), but it will always be in situations when the whale is close to the shore. We will observe them, take pictures and study their behavior, but always keeping a distance for both safety and local regulations reasons.

Food:Note only does your enjoyment of an expedition depend on the location we visit, but also on the quality of the food. On all of our trips we ensure that meals are varied, nutritious, and delicious! We dedicate special attention to the planning of our menus. Your guide will take charge of setting out the meal, while the group relaxes and shares the day’s experiences. Please let us know whilst making your reservation if anyone from the group has any special dietary requirements or other special requests. Unless and until specifically confirmed, all special requests are subject to availability.

Our guides and expeditions...- Specialised and experienced sea kayak guides with exceptional lengthy local experience and knowledge- Each itinerary is planned in detail to capture the best of every destination, and to coincide with the greater concentration of

wildlife, stable weather conditions and the best spots to camp- The sea kayaks we use are very stable and especially designed for long sea kayak journeys. We use double kayaks which provide

greater stability and comfort, ideal for photography and the observation of fauna - Each expedition begins with a complete introduction conducted by our guide(s) - in detail everything you need to know about

equipment, safety measures, rescue and self rescue procedures. Paddling technique will also be demonstrated, after which our guests normally adapt to their kayak and paddling very easily

Changes to the itinerary...Due to the sometimes extremely unpredictable nature of the weather in the Andes mountains of Patagonia, and occasional travel delays in Argentina beyond our control, the itinerary is subject to modification at any time, and the decision of your guide must be respected at all times. (See our Booking Terms and Conditions.)
