TIDBITS® LAUGHS AT

BAD DOGSby Janet Spencer

A lot has been said about hero dogs – but not all of them are heroes! Let’s take a look:• When Haroldo Renato Mota of Sao Paulo,

Brazil let his dog out one day in February of 2002, he knew there was a high likelihood that the dog would return carrying something he had found- a stick, a bone, a piece of trash. But the dog, a black and white mixed breed named Chumbinho, came back carrying something Mota didn’t recognize. He told the dog to drop it. Mota recognized it all right- a rusty hand grenade. He called police; police called the bomb squad; and the bomb squad detonated the grenade safely.

• Mark and Lara Tomlinson live in South Africa with their kids and their dog Digger. Digger is well named, perpetually burying and unbury bones. One day in February of 2002 when Digger began to dig industriously underneath the children’s playhouse, Mark became curious when another neighborhood dog, a puppy named Jack, joined in the excavation. Going to see what they were so interested in, he found to his alarm that the two dogs had uncovered a bomb. Police removed the 60mm mortar bomb left over from World War II. The playhouse had been built the previous April. “Never did we think that we were building it on top of a bomb,” said Lara.

BAD DOGS (continued):• In 1998 when Rachel Murray of Britain wanted

to get a Christmas gift for her roommate, she decided to get him a cell phone. She wrapped it and left it under the Christmas tree. Unfortunately, her dog, a bloodhound named Charlie, enjoyed tearing the package apart while he was bored and unsupervised. Finding the mess but not the phone, Murray dialed the number, hoping to hear it ring. She heard it ringing- a muffled ringing, coming from inside Charlie’s stomach. “At first I though Charlie was lying on the phone- then I realized where it was. I couldn’t believe he’d swallowed it. I sat there in disbelief.” The vet advised her to let nature take its course, and 24 hours later, the phone emerged. The Orange Nokia was in perfect working order.

• Stinky, a six-year-old mongrel, enjoyed going hunting with his master, 30-year-old Kelly Russell near their New Zealand home. In December of 2000, Stinky, Russell, and another dog named Red were out hunting wild pigs. When Russell cornered a pig, he set down his rifle to pick up his knife and, in the ensuing chaos, Stinky jumped on the gun. “There was a big bang and my leg went flying back,” recalled Russell. The blast tore right through his foot. Unable to walk or drive and barely able to crawl, Russell endured a five-hour wait before someone came along who could help him. At the Waikato hospital, doctors were unable to save his foot. Stinky went home, unaware of the trouble he had caused, and Russell said he didn’t blame Stinky for the accident. Russell was charged with hunting illegally in an exotic forest. He collected $10,000 (New Zealand dollars) from the state-run insurance company for the accident, and was fined only $500 for illegal hunting.

• In the year 2000 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Mark Meltz bought his fiancée Hillary Feinberg a lovely wedding ring. On the day before their wedding, he set the ring on the kitchen counter where he’d be sure to see it and remember to give it to the best man. That evening while walking his year-and-a-half old lab, Liza, he noticed the dog was coughing and hacking a lot, but he didn’t think anything of it- until he was unable to find the ring on the morning of the wedding day. Suspecting that the cat had knocked it off the counter and the dog had swallowed it, he rushed the dog to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, where vet Kathleen Wirth took an X-ray and confirmed his fears. At the wedding at 4:00

TOILET MUSEUMSThey’ve got museums dedicated to everything else on earth, so why not toilets too?• In India, the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in New Delhi exhibits all manner of potties.

The museum follows the history of toilets dating back to 2,500 B.C. Find out about the first electric chamber pot, which pre-warmed the seat. See the medieval porta-potty shaped like a treasure chest. There’s the French commode disguised as a stack of books, each carrying the title of a literary classic. (Lift the lid by opening up the volume on top.) You’ll find a replica of King Louis XIII’s throne, who had a commode installed under his throne so he didn’t need to be take bathroom breaks. Also displayed are modern toilets such as the microwave toilet which incinerates waste without using any water. If you want to find out about the technology, social customs, or etiquette of the toilet, this is the place for you.

• Curators at the Gladstone Pottery Museum in England opened an exhibit described as a “celebration of the toilet” in 2001. The area surrounding the museum has historically been a hub of pottery and ceramics, and many of the world’s toilet manufacturers are based in the area, making it the perfect spot for a museum exhibit dedicated to the cause. The exhibit, called “Flushed with Pride,” honors Thomas Crapper, a real-life plumber who improved the design of several parts of the toilet but did not actually invent it. There are seven gallery rooms displaying over 150 objects related to the toilet. It begins with a realistically re-created pit toilet from an 1840s tenement slum, shared with realistically re-created pigs, complete with realistically re-created odors formed by combining various noxious chemicals.

• The Gladstone Pottery Museum’s display of pre-sewer system toilets is billed as “an immersive theatrical experience.” Visitors climb into a sewer pipe to view a video showing modern sanitary engineers doing their work. There’s a hands-on interactive gallery which traces the development of the toilet with visitors invited to do some flushing of their own. The collection of Victorian toilets is billed as the most complete showcase of historic toilets on earth. There’s also a gallery devoted to the development of the bathroom, including the story of how color was introduced to bathroom fixtures. A highlight is the avocado bathroom suite displaying green porcelain first used in the 1960s. Wanna know how astronauts go to the bathroom? Find out in an exhibit devoted to telling how people accomplish the feat in extreme environments. Finally, toilets of the future are considered. Waterless toilets? Composting potties? Toilets that check waste products to identify health problems? The possibilities are discussed in detail.

• In Wisconsin, the Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue displayed a collection of toilet paper from the time it opened in 1992 until it closed in 2000. Nearly 3,000 different rolls collected from restrooms all over the world were shown, including TP swiped from such notable places as Ellis Island, Caesar’s Palace, the Alamo, and Graceland. Proudly presented were the “roll of the week” as well as a complete history of T.P. from leaves to Sears catalog to Charmin. There was the European Collection, the African Shelf, and the Mexican Display. The museum is now closed. The paperwork is in storage, awaiting a new home.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be hurt by a colleague’s harsh criticism. But don’t let it shake your confidence in what you’re trying to do. A more positive aspect starts to appear by week’s end.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re torn between your sensible self and the part of you that enjoys acquiring lovely things. Best advice: Wait for an end-of-month sale, and then buy something wonderful.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your artistic side has practical applications this week, such as redecorating your home or redesigning your personal stationery. Whatever you do, someone special will like it.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You could be drawn into a problem ‘twixt friends or family members. Best bet: Ask the questions that go to the heart of the matter, then get them all together for a group hug.LEO (July 23 to August 22) As much as you love being the center of attention, your big Lion’s heart impels you to share the spotlight with a colleague who helped you with that well-praised project.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your eagerness to act on a challenge is wisely tempered early in the week by a lack of necessary information. Things begin to clear up during the weekend.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A relationship you’d hoped would keep going seems to be going nowhere. Close it out and move on to a brighter romantic aspect just beginning to manifest itself.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things don’t go completely as planned this week. But enjoy the surprises, even if you have to adjust your schedule. Some of them could be quite delightful.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Making choices is usually easy for straight-shooting Archers. But a new development could deflect your aim. Try to put off decisions until you know more.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While part of you might prefer taking a more familiar path, let your more daring and -- admit it -- super-curious self see what the unexplored has to offer.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Those nasty types have slithered back under the rocks and present no more problems. Now’s the time to move ahead on that promising new relationship.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new offer could clear up that lingering money problem. Also, a more confident attitude on your part might well help get that personal situation back on track.

BAD DOGS (continued):that afternoon, Hillary Feinberg presented Mark

Meltz with a wedding band, and Mark Meltz presented Hillary Feinberg with an X-ray. The congregation burst into laughter. Meltz’s father stood watch over the dog waiting for the ring to reappear while the couple went on their Hawaiian honeymoon.

• Garbage collector Glen Shaw operates a trash collection service in New Hampshire. He occasionally allowed his large Newfoundland dog named Bear to come along for the ride. But at 4:30a.m. on December 20, 2001, Shaw got out of the 10-wheeled compactor truck to load some garbage in the back. Bear somehow released the hand brake somehow, and the truck began to roll slowly forward. Shaw ran after the runaway garbage truck but was unable to catch it as it gained momentum, rolling down the road. It plunged into the Souhegan River, and Shaw plunged into the water in order to rescue the dog. The dog turned out to be fine, but it took a hazardous material team many hours to clean up the mess.

• In Oklahoma, the Dodson family left their three-month-old puppy in the utility room when they went out. They returned to find their home a pile of rubble. The pup somehow flipped the gas line switch, filling the room with natural gas. When the water heater kicked on, the gas exploded. The pup was hurled clear of the explosion, unharmed.

• Lyle Sneary and his dog Rancher were driving in a truck making the rounds of his Oklahoma cattle herd. Noticing a cow was down, Sneary got out of the truck, while the dog stayed inside. Sneary fed the cow hay out of the back of his truck. Seeing that dinner was being served, the rest of the cattle herd stampeded towards him. He began screaming to head off the herd, which caused Rancher to get excited inside the truck. The dog hit the automatic door lock. Then he knocked the gear shift into neutral. Seeing the truck rolling, Sneary jumped on the sideboard, trying to reach inside the window. He was unable to stop the truck and bailed out right before the rig hit a tree. Sneary and his dog had to walk a mile and a half to call for help. The officer who responded revoked Rancher’s license.

Muffins for the morning rush(NC)—Breakfast is the most vital meal of the day. However, a quarter of Canadian moms (26%) feel they are too rushed to prepare breakfast for their children in the morning. As breakfast champions and in honour of World Nutella Day on February 5th Nutella is highlighting the importance of breakfast throughout the month and providing tips and helpful recipes. One strategy to help during the morning rush is to choose a dish that can be created in advance, such as Nutella breakfast muffins. This allows less time to be spent on meal preparation in the morning and more time enjoying breakfast together as a family.

Nutella breakfast muffinsPrep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 18 to 20 minutes Makes: 12 muffins

Ingredients:1 cup (500mL) all purpose flour¾ cup (180mL) whole-wheat flour¼ cup (60mL) quick cook oats1 tsp (5mL)baking powder1 tsp (5mL)baking soda¾ cup (180mL) Low fat milk (2% or less M.F)

¾ cup (180mL) unsweetened applesauce¼ cup (60mL) honey1 egg1 tsp (5mL) pure vanilla extract1 cup (250mL) fresh or frozen raspberries¾ cup Nutella

Directions:• Pre-heat oven to 375°F (190°c).• Spray a 12-muffin, non-stick muffin tin with cooking spray.• In a large bowl, whisk together, flours, oats, baking powder and baking soda. In another bowl, whisk together milk, applesauce, honey, egg and vanilla. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix just to combine. Fold in raspberries and spoon batter equally between the 12 muffins.• Bake muffins for 19 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the muffin comes out clean. Let muffins cool completely.• Slice the muffin open and spread with 1 tablespoon of Nutella. Great for breakfast on the go. Muffins can be made ahead and frozen.• Pair with a glass of milk and handful of extra berries. For more recipes and to learn about different individuals and organizations who are championing breakfast in Canada, please visit Facebook.com/TheBreakfastTable

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Cosmopolis” (R) -- In the near-ish future, a 28-year-old billionaire (Robert Pattinson) takes a limo ride through New York in search of a plot. Pattinson plays a slick, detached, financial wiz who says a lot of things that sound cool, even if they don’t mean much. As his limo glides through the grim world of future-NYC, we see that the majority of people live in poverty -- and they all want him dead.It really is a fascinating movie that seems like it has a lot to say about society, the future and nature of desire. Too bad it’s all so rushed and awkward. Characters tend to appear and disappear with no explanation. People seem to ignore each other during conversations and just go on saying vague, semi-philosophical lines.

“Red Lights” (R) -- Sigourney Weaver and her assistant go around exposing frauds who pretend to be psychics and faith healers. Robert Di Nero plays a blind psychic who supposedly killed an investigator with his mind powers. The movie tries to make it interesting to watch smart people disproving magic, but it’s not. It is kinda fun to see all of the acting talent on screen going head to head. If you can make it to the end, there may be a cool twist.

“Little Birds” (R) -- This movie about the feeling of emptiness puts good visuals to the emotion, but falls flat in terms of keeping you interested. The story follows Lilly (Juno Temple), the worst teenager ever in the most desolate town ever. She’s acid-tongued, and smart enough to know that she’s always making poor decisions. She gets involved with some local punks who torture animals for fun, among other awful distractions. Sitting through this movie, you want to just get in a car and drive away from the whole experience.

DOG OF THE WEEK“The Trouble with Bliss” (PG-13) -- The movie is about a guy named Morris Bliss (Michael C.

Hall) who passively wends his way through his quirky life as an unemployed man-child. First off, can we all just agree that movie titles should be forever banned from including the name of the main character in a clever way? “Good Will Hunting” was a good movie, and not because the protagonist was named Will Hunting.Get it? The guy’s name is Bliss, which also means happiness, and he’s troubled, even though his life’s not that bad. It’s the trouble with Bliss. It’s a perfect indicator of how much forced quirkiness is in the film. Don’t be fooled into renting this extra-long sitcom episode that calls itself a movie. Perhaps I’m being too harsh because of that irritating title, but for real, you’re not missing much if you skip this one.

5 Simple Steps to Combat Fatigue(Cont’d From Last Week)

3. Digestion: When our digestive systems fail to function properly, our food will not be digested and the nutrients will be lost. We can then be left with symptoms of gas, bloating, irregular bowel movements, cramping and a general feeling of ill-health. As we age, our bodies do not produce enough digestive enzymes and our “good bacteria” fails to thrive. By regularly supplementing with a digestive enzyme and probiotics, we will then be able to absorb our nutrients, digest food properly and regulate bowel movements. As our digestive systems become balanced, energy will be restored to the rest of the body.

4. Exercise: Often we feel too tired to exercise, but exercise will give us the extra vitality we need to get the most out of the day. Start with a daily walk and slowly increase the pace and length. Having a walking or work-out buddy or signing up for a class will make you accountable to someone and you will be more likely to achieve your goal.

5. Nutrients: Even with the best diet, we still require the addition of certain supplements for optimal health. A few key supplements for improved energy are:• Multivitamins to correct and prevent nutritional deficiencies.• B-vitamins to support the nervous system and adrenal glands, specifically a B-complex with additional sublingual B12.• Antioxidants to slow the ageing process prevent chronic disease and reduce free radical damage.• Stress vitamins to support your adrenal glands (stress glands) and enhance your body’s ability to withstand stress.

Following these 5 simple steps will boost your energy and vitality.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT, KEEP IT OFF, LOOK YOUNGER AND LIVE LONGER

For the following weeks, I will be sharing valuable information on extensive research I have been doing on weight loss, the weight loss industry and all the physical and psychological implications on the topic. The weight loss industry is a multimillionaire industry with many products in the market claiming to help you lose weight. There is information everywhere, magazines, books, television, internet, etc. But the reality is that every day the rate of obesity is increasing and the weight loss companies are getting richer. The weight loss industry is taking the lead on how you spend your money to control weight, rather than you questioning what‘s making you gain extra pounds. Your health and your weight should be on your hands not on the hands of the weight loss industry.Focusing on weight loss alone, the results are rarely permanent. While weight loss is important, it should not be the main goal. It should be a pleasant and a normal by-product of the road to the primary goal: Great Health. Superior health is marked by an exceptionally long and relatively disease-free lifespan. Countless studies reveal that people with superior health are slim. Learning how to achieve superior health, the ideal weight will follow naturally. First, it is important to understand how physical cravings cause overeating, as well as the psychological factors that can help to change this pattern of consumption. In other words, more than following a diet, it is important to create new, healthy behaviors that will eventually become effortless. This is so highly effective that it enables you to take control of your own health destiny. Working with my clients, I help them to embrace healthier eating choices to improve their health and as a consequence extra pounds will go away. Let’s get healthier. This week, I would like to help you lose extra pounds. If you have tried three or more different diets, you qualify for a FREE CONSULTATION! I will help you to lose weight, keep it off, increase energy levels, look younger and live longer. Give me a call to set up your FREE consultation for a permanent change. Results are warranty!

David Rocco warms up with Tomato Lentil Soup

(NC)—No one knows the ins and outs of cooking with tomatoes better than celebrity chef David Rocco. As a “Tommalier” – a tomato expert – Rocco uses tomatoes as the base ingredient for the freshest, most flavourful dishes, from sauces to soups and stews. When selecting the best tomatoes for a memorable meal, Rocco advises cooks need not feel guilty for using canned tomatoes or tomato paste – the tomato harvest season is short in Canada, and the ones in the can are picked at their peak so they’re ripe and flavourful.

Tomatoes form the base of David Rocco’s warming soup, a deliciously simple one-pot meal ready to serve in a little over 20 minutes.

David Rocco’s Tomato and Lentil Soup

Ingredients:4 tbsp (56 ml) extra virgin olive oil2 garlic cloves, chopped1 bunch of fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped2 fresh chili peppers, chopped2 cans (28 oz/796 ml) peeled plum tomatoes, such as Hunt’s Original Diced Tomatoes1 can (19 oz/540 ml) lentils, drained and rinsedSalt, QBPepper, QB1 tbsp of tomato paste, such as Hunt’s Original Tomato PasteWater

DirectionsIn a saucepan, heat olive oil. Add garlic, parsley and chili peppers and sauté for a few minutes until the garlic has started to turn golden.Pour in the diced tomatoes. With the back of a wooden spoon, break up the tomatoes into little chunks. You can decide the consistency. Then add in the rinsed lentils, salt and pepper. Add tomato paste, and then add water about 1/2 an inch above the lentils; stir well. Bring to a boil, then lower to medium heat and cook for 20 minutes until the soup has thickened.

Hunt’s Tommalier Tip:It’s a tradition to make tomato lentil soup with sausage on New Year’s Day as it is supposed to bring good luck for the year ahead. For a heartier version that does not betray the soup’s cucina povera roots, break up some sausage and let it slightly brown, just before you add in the tomatoes.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This Christmas, we thought we bought the perfect puppy for our son. “Chipper” looked adorable and healthy at the pet store when we picked him out. However, a couple of days after we brought him home, Chipper got very ill; he was lethargic and vomiting. We took him to the vet right away, where he remains, recovering from several issues the vet said are typical of puppy-mill dogs. He also said that puppy-mill dogs can have behavioral problems as well. Now I’m not sure we should keep him. What should we do? -- Taken for a Ride in Pennsylvania

DEAR TAKEN: OK, first off, please keep Chipper. Even though he is not the perfectly healthy puppy you expected, it’s not his fault. Furthermore, you made a commitment to bring a pet into your home, and you should stick with that promise. Second, you can complain about what happened. Complain to store management, write the corporate headquarters, if there is one, and complain to the Better Business Bureau. Pet stores and breeders must be licensed by the USDA to sell pets, and are supposed to be inspected regularly. You can contact the local SPCA, the Humane Society of the United States (hsus.org) or the ASPCA (aspca.org) if you think Chipper came from a puppy mill.Again, please keep him if at all possible. Too many puppy-mill dogs wind up in shelters, or are euthanized, due to health and behavioral problems that their owners didn’t want to deal with. If his health issues become overwhelming, talk to your vet about treatment and payment options. To head off potential behavioral problems, contact a dog trainer who has experience dealing with difficult dogs.

Carrera has been at Katie’s Place for some time. Finding herself at the shelter caused Carrera a great deal of stress and anxiety. For a long time Carrera hid from the other cats and volunteers, and would sometimes lash out when the stress level got too high. She is slowly coming around, accepting the cats and volunteers around her. She is looking for affection, and will actually seek out a lap to cuddle on. The fact that she has come around so much while at the shelter only goes to prove that in a quiet, stable, loving home she would blossom into a wonderful loving cat. Carrera needs a home with no canine companions or small children. She needs someone who will give her time

to learn how to trust again. Bambi came to us over 3 years ago after she lost the only home she’d ever known. She was terrified and devastated when she suddenly found herself in a shelter. She

huddled in her cage for about a week, refusing to come out. Bambi has adjusted somewhat to the shelter and enjoys visits with people, but her tension level is always high because she shares the space with several other cats. She is never truly at ease at the shelter. She shows all the potential to be a wonderful little companion but she needs to find a home where she can show that side of herself. Bambi needs an experienced cat owner who would allow her to take her time to come around and finally feel at ease. Someone who knows how to step back and let a cat adjust and regain trust on their own. That person is guaranteed to discover a beautiful little girl who loves to play and will shower them with love and affection.

Pet care is enhanced with natural health products(NC)—For many people, pets are not just a companion, but a part of the family. We can spend hours researching the most specialized foods, treats, toys, and other products for our best friends, looking for tips to care for them properly. Recently, a growing number of pet owners are going the distance with natural health products and specialized supplements.

“The health of our pets is an important factor in our lives” says Helen Sherrard, president of the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA). “It’s as important to take preventative

measures for illnesses and ailments, as it is to seek treatment.”

If your pet is not getting the appropriate nutrients, health issues can arise, like cognitive dysfunction, skeletal weakness, loss of senses like hearing or eyesight, and more.

Pet healthcare options are becoming increasingly varied and popular, with many clinics offering herbal remedies, pet acupuncture, and other homeopathic treatments for almost any ailment. The

most common recommendations include: probiotics and other dietary supplements with omega-3s for gastrointestinal health and a shiny coat; antioxidants to postpone or prevent cognitive issues associated with ageing.

To maximize your pets’ quality of life, the CHFA recommends visiting a local natural health products retailer or veterinarian to discuss alternative healthcare options for them.www.newscanada.com

◆ It was American humorist and columnist Josh Billings who made the following sage observation: “Reason often makes mistakes, but conscience never does.”

◆ You think there are a lot of lawsuits being heard in the courts these days? Statistics show that half of the suits filed never even make it to court.

◆ In France in the 1700s, capital punishment was not uncommon, and criminals thus condemned were decapitated by the country’s Chief Executioner. This position was hereditary, which posed a problem when, in 1726, the holder of that title, Charles-Jean-Baptiste Sanson, suffered an early death, leaving his 7-year-old son, Charles, to take up the grisly duties. It was obvious to all that a child could never wield the heavy axe required for the decapitations, so it was deemed acceptable for a helper to actually perform the executions. Only the official office-holder could put the official seal on the act, however, so the poor boy had to witness every one. It wasn’t until the ripe old age of 12 that he began to take over the full duties of the office.

◆ When famed inventor Alexander Graham Bell died in 1922, he was dictating a memo. His final words were, “So little done, so much to do!”

◆ If you’re a fan of big brass, you might want to head to Millersville, Pa., in May. Every year during that month, the town celebrates International Tuba Day, with some 50 tuba players on hand to serenade the crowd.

◆ There’s been much public conversation about the growing girth of Americans in recent decades. It’s not just people who are gaining weight, though; between 1996 and 2006, the average motor vehicle made in the U.S. gained 500 pounds.

Q: There is a show on cable that my husband and I really love called “Paranormal Paparazzi.” Can you tell me if/when the second season will air?

A: I spoke with “Paranormal” host Rachel Fine, and she told me that it might be up to the fans as to whether it gets a second season. “’Paranormal Paparazzi’ is one of the most interesting projects I’ve ever worked on. While I was excited to take a fun, ‘TMZ’-style approach to the paranormal, I was

seriously surprised by some of the things I encountered. Working on this show for the Travel Channel really changed my outlook on the world -- I legitimately had experiences I can’t explain. My eyes were opened this season, and I definitely hope we’ll come back for more!”To help facilitate the approval of a second season, I suggest you head over to travelchannel.com/about/viewer-relations. Click on General Comment, then TV Shows, then Other. And then write a couple sentences about how much you loved “Paranormal Paparazzi” and really hope they renew it for a second season.

***Q: I read on your Twitter feed that Heart had been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recently, and I wondered if they had gotten in? A: In December, the HOF committee

announced that Heart -- including sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson -- would indeed be in the class of 2013. Other inductees include Canadian rockers Rush, the late disco queen Donna Summer, singer/songwriter Randy Newman, hip-hop group Public Enemy and blues guitarist and singer Albert King.

***Q: I thought I had seen or read that Elizabeth Perkins would be a new sitcom this fall, but I haven’t seen her anywhere. Was it canceled?

A: Elizabeth can be seen this spring -- April 3 at 9:30/8:30c to be exact -- in the new ABC comedy “How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life).” She co-stars with Sarah Chalke and Brad Garrett. Of the show, Elizabeth told me: “What I love about this show is you’ve got three generations of people living

in the same household, mostly because of the economy, which is happening all over the country. “It’s wacky in the way that real life is wacky. It’s not this big style of sitcom acting; it’s funny in a character-driven way. It’s the situations we find ourselves in that are funny, as opposed to setting up this whole big plot point.”

***Q: I love Steven Pasquale of “Rescue Me.” What can I see him on now? --

A: Beginning Thursday, Jan. 31, you can catch Steven in NBC’s new drama called “Do No Harm.” Steven plays a neurosurgeon who has a serious problem when he learns that his body is no longer responding to the serum that keeps his dangerous alter ego in check.

Following your dreams top priority for 2013

A generation of Canadians are realizing their potential

(NC)—According to a recent study, 2013 will be the year that many Canadians keep their New Year’s resolutions. Over eight in 10 (83%) are striving to learn new things this year, as a sense of fulfilment is top priority for Canadians in 2013.

The survey, conducted on behalf of American Express Canada, looked at how adults feel about following their dreams and realizing their true potential, as well as whether their definition of success has shifted over time. The findings reveal Canadians are willing to make significant personal and professional sacrifices this year to make their dreams come true.

“It’s clear Canadians are starting to define success based on their passions and dreams, rather than simply their career status,” David Barnes, VP of Communications at American Express, says. “I think we can look forward to many Canadians realizing their potential in the New Year.”

The survey further reveals that Canadian priorities might be shifting away from traditional notions of success. 32 per cent of Canadians have changed careers at least once in favour of a greater work/life balance, and 27 per cent have taken time off of work to travel the world.

This points to an underlying cultural shift where Canadians are prioritizing their dreams over work and career.

◆ Too many dishes and cups and not enough cabinet space? Try rotating your serving pieces as you would a wardrobe. Use different patterns for different seasons.

◆ “When you need to quickly clean the microwave and there is stuck-on food, thoroughly saturate a washcloth or dishrag with water and microwave it for about a minute. Leave it in the microwave for another minute, and then use it to wipe away the food. It comes off like magic! (Always check the cloth to make sure it is not too hot to handle first.)” -- N.C., via e-mail

◆ “Here’s a great discovery our family made after a recent snowstorm. It’s fun to paint on snow. Use wide paintbrushes and watercolors. Mist the snow with a water bottle to create a semi-hard surface, then paint away. We used sticks and leaves to create a border and took photos of our ‘creations.’ This way we have a memory of it after it melts away.” -- R.O. in Ohio

◆ “I save the plastic containers that margarine comes in. Then buy fresh fruit, cut it up and store it in the containers in individual servings. I usually do a few days’ worth at a time, so if my containers are still in the fridge, I know I haven’t been eating enough fruit.” -- E.C. in California

◆ “If I am going to fry up burger patties for hamburger night, I always do about a dozen extra. They freeze well and make an easy, quick supper on nights I don’t feel like cooking.” -- F.F. in Missouri

Wherever you roam this winter, make sure you’re covered(NC)—If you’re an adventure-seeker like Indiana Jones, maybe you’re planning to spend your time this winter touring the Jordanian desert on horseback, or searching for lost Incan treasure in the jungles of Peru, or perhaps you’ll slow things down by escaping to a white-sand beach in the Dominican. Wherever you plan your next adventure, make sure to follow this checklist:• Tell a trusted friend or family-member about your plans and ask them to keep an eye on your place while you’re away• Secure your home and turn off the water• Cancel the newspapers• Forward or stop mail delivery• Make photocopies of your travel and personal documents for yourself and the trusted friend or family-member as a precaution• If you’re driving to your destination, find out if you need supplemental car insurance• Find out if you need to update your shots• Let your bank and credit card company know about your travel plans to avoid any confusion or service disruption• Most important, buy travel insurance!

Interestingly, a recent survey on travel insurance conducted by Desjardins Financial Security found that close to one in four Canadian travellers aren’t planning on purchasing travel insurance. And that’s despite the fact that 91% agreed that their personal safety is vitally important when they travel.

“If safety is important to Canadians, it’s not clear why so many do not properly prepare for the unexpected when

they travel,” said François Morel, insurance sales consultant with Desjardins Financial Security. “For example, treating an uncomplicated lower leg or arm fracture in a US hospital could cost well in excess of $10,000 for an uninsured patient. Removal of the appendix, another common and unpredictable procedure, costs an average of $33,000.”

“Regardless of whether you’re out of the country for a day or for several weeks, accidents or illnesses happen all the time and it’s best to be prepared,” said Morel. “Hospital stays abroad can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars. So, it’s best to take a few minutes to buy reliable travel insurance coverage.”

Here are some things to remember when buying travel insurance:

It’s convenient: It can be bought on the internet or by phone.

It’s flexible: You’ll find the right policy that suits your needs based on your age, health situation and trip duration.

It’s reliable: Coverage provides 24/7 medical assistance support so you know you can count on someone in case of an emergency.

Consult your insurance provider to learn more. Or, for more immediate answers visit the Going on a Trip section at www.desjardinslifeinsurance.com.
