SITE 2008

SITE 2008 was held over Easter at Rangiora Pony Club grounds.

SITE review from the Pegasus Riding Club Website:

www.freewebs.com/pegasusridingclub/site2008.htm

On Saturday was the derby jumping, the 1st of 5 SITE phases. This course included both show jumps and cross country and proved to be a well set up course with a “scary” bit where there was no jump!! Maybe the horses were camera shy?

Sunday came and this was the main day for SITE with the remaining 4 phases being run. The morning started with a quick briefing about the Riding Club Mount then competition started at 9am. The Riding Club Mount, Turnout and Teams Jumping were all run in the morning with the Dressage Quadrille in the afternoon.

The Riding Club Mount was a combination of team work and individuality. One team activity was to pass the rugby ball between all members, I think the hardest part of this was to actually get all 4 horses lined up side by side.

The turnout was judged on the cleanliness of gear and the team uniformity. There were some great

coloured brow bands and hat covers out on display to show off the team colours.

The Teams Jumping proved to be a bit of a giggle especially for our own team who managed to get the giggles sometime after the 1st jump, managed to lose their way and trying to recover managed to get some sense back. They did actually have 1 really great team jump!!

Lastly was the Dressage Quadrille where a costume and music are all part of the parcel. It was fantastic to see all those great ideas for costumes and then to match it up with music. Some horses weren’t too happy with the music selection their riders choose as they didn’t really want to get too close to the speaker, but riders and horses managed to recover and this phase proved to be the best entertainment of the day.

Jumping Fences Courtesy Debby Sly (How to Ride)

BASIC TECHNIQUE It is your job to bring the horse to the fence in a balanced rhythm, to remain in balance with him over it, and to land in balance so that you can continue to the next fence. Most riders attempt to do far too much on the approach and over a fence, which only unbalances and distracts the horse. When jumping in canter, keep a light seat on the approach to the fence. About 20-30m away, whilst still retaining exactly the same rhythm, lower your seat deeper into the saddle and actively close your legs against the horse’s sides. Keep your shoulders slightly forwards. Having closed the legs more against the horse’s sides, you may have to take a slightly stronger contact in the hand to prevent the horse accelerating. As the horse takes off over the fence, remain in the same position but close your knees and lower legs tighter against the horse’s sides to help you remain still in the saddle, and stretch your hands and arms forwards to allow the horse to stretch his head and neck forwards over the fence. COMMON JUMPING FAULTS GETTING IN FRONT OF THE MOVEMENT Faced with a fence, many riders seem to have an irresistible desire to anticipate when the horse is going to take off and to ‘jump’ with him! Instead of sitting quietly and maintaining their position, the rhythm and the balance, they fire their seat out of the saddle, hurl their upper body up the horse’s neck and generally do about ten times more than they need to. The effect on the horse is both unbalancing and distracting. This can result in the horse hitting the fence with his front legs because the rider has loaded too much weight onto his forehand, or worse still, the horse may be tempted to put his feet back down again in front of the fence. The horse is then unable to jump at all. CHASING THE HORSE INTO THE FENCE The rider is meant to maintain the same rhythm and balance as he or she rides from fence to fence, but many people feel unable to wait for the fence. As soon as they are a few strides from it, they drive the horse forwards, immediately unbalancing the horse and pushing him on to his forehand. This approach usually results in the horse taking off much too far away from the fence and really having to stretch to clear it. If the horse is made to jump like this, he is likely to knock fences down. He is being made to use speed to clear the fences rather than the power and athleticism of his body. If he is ridden like this across country, particularly to a very upright fence, he will find it difficult to get his front legs up in the air quickly enough and risks hitting the fence. If it is a solid cross country fence, this may well be enough to unseat the rider or cause the horse to fall. IN TIMES OF TROUBLE

Page 6: Riders Round Up - May 2008

New Zealand Riding Clubs & Bridleways INC May 2008

www.nzridingclubs.homestead.com Page 6 of 9

Whilst the horse must not be allowed to rush towards his fences, it is just as important that he is not allowed to slow down to the point that he runs out of impulsion or stops. If you sense that the horse is reluctant to keep progressing forwards to a fence, you must adopt a more aggressive style of riding to encourage the horse to keep going. In this situation it is more important than ever that you keep your seat in the saddle the whole time. If you are tempted to anticipate the take off and get in front of the movement, the reluctant jumper is presented with the ideal opportunity to stop dead!
