Ride Kenya

Transcript of Ride Kenya

Located on the slopes below Chyulu National Park midway

between Amboseli and Tsavo parks, away from the heat and malaria, Ol Donyo Wuas Lodge and it’s sister operation, Ride Kenya, looks up to Kilimanjaro and over the fabulous open savannahs that make Kenya so famous.

After 21 years, our small, intimate lodge and riding operation has

undergone a process of re-invention and rejuvenation to meet the challenges and markets of today and tomorrow. We reflect with pride on past accomplishments, all initiated with local community support. In 2008 we knocked down the old and re-opened with a brand new lodge that proudly holds its head high in East Africa and is receiving rave reviews from guests.

Ol Donyo Wuas is forming the core of a new, sustainable model for conservation which ensures protection of the area’s wildlife through an innovative sharing-of-benefits scheme with the local community and the creation of conservancies.

Many years ago we would get excited if we saw tracks of elephant passing through camp. Today we have elephants in front of the lodge nearly every day, including two 90 pounders who are just about permanent fixtures at our waterholes. Lion and cheetah concentrations are increasing while our black rhino populations are secure.

275,000 Acres of privacy

Guests consistently rate Ride Kenya as one of the very best horse riding operations anywhere on earth. The wide ranging and ever changing habitat, the area’s extraordinary wildlife and beauty, coupled with superb guides and well schooled horses make for the

riding holiday of a lifetime.

We offer two different itineraries for our mobile safaris. One is our Amboseli ride, which offers some of the most thrilling riding in the world, as we take horses through swamps

filled with elephant, buffalo, lion, hyena and much more. This ride is for the serious rider, who is used to long days in the saddle and riding at speed.

The other safari itinerary we offer is our signature Chyulu ride, which has been popular since we started. The scenery on this ride is unbeatable, and the going for the horses is

perfect. This ride offers families, and other less bold riders, a chance to see some of Africa’s most beautiful creatures from horseback. The wildlife is more spread out than in Amboseli,

so riders can be a bit more relaxed on this trip, but still enjoy great game sightings.

Both Ride Kenya mobile safari options are quintessentially East African, offering riding with views of Mount Kilimanjaro, across vast open plains, into acacia forests, swampland,

volcanic hills, mist forest and much more.

Classic Tented Camp 6 Night/7 Day Horseback Safaris

Ride Kenya mobile safaris are reminiscent of the safaris of old. Rides tend to cover between 15 to 30 miles per day during which the luxury camp is moved ahead to the next destination. The tented camps are extremely comfortable, with wrought iron twin or double beds, fine linen, en suite bathrooms, a central dining tent and a high standard of food and drinks. All of the mobile safaris are supported by a crew of grooms, chefs, waiters and general helpers to ensure maximum comfort for the guests.

In order to join either of our horse safari routes, guests should be fit, adventurous and capable riders. We ask that all guests are comfortable at a good canter as a minimum. We do have plenty of chances to gallop and jump also, but this is not compulsory. We aim to spend 4-7 hours per day in the saddle, and then also offer our guests the chance to enjoy game drives, bush walks and night game drives.

Ride Kenya also offers fantastic lodge-based riding holidays out of Ol Donyo Wuas. These holidays are a wonderful option for anyone wanting superb horses and riding, with all the benefits of staying in a luxury safari lodge.

We offer horseback riding everyday for Ol Donyo Wuas guests. This can be enjoyed either early in the morning, or at sunset. Most of the lodge-based rides last for about two to four hours, but we are able to cater to each guest’s needs.

Many of Ride Kenya’s mobile safari guests enjoy a night or two in the lodge after their safari, and this is an excellent add-on to our safari itineraries.

Please note: There is a weight limit for Ride Kenya’s horses. Novice riders riding from Ol Donyo Wuas lodge should be no more than 100kg, whilst advanced riders joining us for a longer expedition should be no more than 95kg.

The Activities of

Our Trust’s prime task is to deliver an effective outreach programme to our local

Maasai community, who in turn ensure that wildlife thrives in this part of Kenya. The Trust is run by Richard Bonham who ensures that there is delivery within these communities. The Trust is one of the longest serving and most successful trusts in East Africa, ensuring the link between community upliftment and a prospering wildlife population is maintained. Some of the projects the Trust is involved with includes:

Maasailand Predator Compensation Programme: Predators and lions in particular are regularly killed throughout East Africa, yet here at Ol Donyo Wuas not a lion has been killed since the compensation program started nearly three years ago. Our Maasai neighbours are financially compensated when lions, leopards, cheetah or hyenas kill any of their livestock. A recent and successful development has been the partnering with National Geographic Society and Dereck and Beverly Joubert’s Big Cat Initiative to expand this programme to the group ranches that surround Amboseli Reserve - an area of close to a million acres.

Amboseli/Tsavo Game Scout Association:Our game scout’s primary focus is on the prevention of poaching in the area, often working in tandem with our bloodhounds. This project is a success and the area free of all poaching, increases year after year. Working with the Tusk Trust, Richard Bonham flies the anti-poaching Piper Cub throughout the entire Amboseli region whenever it is needed.

Chyulu Rhino Project:Some of Kenya’s last free ranging black rhinos can be found in and around the Chyulu Hills. The Trust, KWS rangers, together with other organizations, is responsible for enhancing security and monitoring of these endangered rhino.

The Conservancy Initiative: The Trust, being the link between our Maasai community and the lodge, is leading the complex negotiations to create the new 23,000 acre conservancy that will for the first time create a livestock free sanctuary for wildlife on the group ranch and effectively expand the size of the Chyulu National Park. When Ol Donyo Wuas’ occupancies have climbed sufficiently and can afford the additional costs, the aim is to expand this conservancy to around 70,000 acres and create permanent migration corridors through to Kimana and Amboseli.

Mbirikani Group Ranch Mobile Clinic and Health Centre: These were established by the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Foundation in partnership with The Trust, to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases and to help improve the general health of the community. This is funded by a private United States foundation and is based in Mbirikani village but also visits communities living further afield. In addition, the fund oversees a school upliftment programme, a fixed based health centre as well as a mobile clinic to the more remote communities.
