Arsenal Player Praises the Collegiate!
This week we were delighted to read
positive comments about Kieran Gibbs’
time at Riddlesdown in the Arsenal
brochure. Kieran attended Riddlesdown
from September 2002 - July 2006 and
represented the Riddlesdown football
team on many occasions.
You can see Kieran’s original
Tutor Group photo (right)
which is still hanging proudly
on Mrs Williams’ wall, as she
was his Tutor back then!
Pegasus student, Alex Keefe 8IDH entered the Surrey
County Golf Rookie Tour, a series of 12 golf
competitions held in Surrey. The top 12 players in the
Order of Merit qualified for the “Race to the Stars”
invitational final held at Wentworth Golf Club. On
competition day, Alex came 2nd in the U12s scratch
completion with 11 over. Over the whole season, Alex
finished 3rd in the handicap OOM and was in the top 10
finish in the scratch OOM.
Well done, Alex!
Alex Comes Second in County Tour!
World War One Experience
“On Sunday 14th September Miss Nordberg, Claire and I went to Folkstone
to embark on a journey that would take us to some of the key sites and
cemeteries of WW1. We were asked to research a local soldier who lost his
life fighting. His name was A.H Purvey. We were taken by coach to France
and Belgium. We visited cemeteries including Tyne Cot, the largest
commonwealth cemetery in Europe. Here we found the name of A.H. Purvey
who was a Lance Corporal in the Staffordshire regiment. The overall
experience was very moving, yet also very interesting. For Claire and me, it
highlighted the importance of remembrance and proved that, even after 100
years, WWI still has huge significance on our lives today." Joanna Hearn,
VI/JAB.
Year 7 European Languages Poster Competition
Please could all of the winners see Mrs Waters in P07 during

The Miracle Rehearsals
I have given a bit of an overview below of what we did
and where we went. I will try and tie it in with some
pictures and I have tried to put the picture names in the
right place for you - I hope it makes sense! I have
written quite a lot but I hope some of it is useful!
We flew to Reykjavik where we spent the first night in
Iceland in a hostel. We got to explore the city and see
some of the old town (photos Reykjavik (14, 16)) before
heading deeper into the country to begin our trek.
We headed to Pingvellir, the area of the country where
the Eurasian and North American plates are splitting
apart. We went on walks over 2 days between the plates
in the huge rift, saw beautiful waterfalls and the building
where the first Icelandic Parliament was held. Students
quickly adapted to using the trangias and cooked us
some lovely food, despite the heavy rain!! (Pingvellir (9,
22, 28)).
After 2 very soggy days, we got aboard a bus and did a
tour of the Golden Circle to see the most fantastic
sights in Iceland, including Geysir with the most
spectacular displays by the geysers (although they did
smell a little eggy, Geysir (4)) and then on to a series of
waterfalls, including Gulfoss (Golden Circle (3+27) and
Seljalandsfoss (where we even got to walk behind the
waterfall, Golden Circle (26+34)).
From there we took a stunning drive through Porsmork
National Park where we got the first views of the
glaciers and we had to drive through the river - we were
not sure our bus was going to make it! We spent 3
nights here and took lovely treks up the very volcanic
landscape close to the Eyjafalljokull glacier and volcano
(which caused so many problems in its eruption in 2010
- Porsmork (19+33)) and you could see how the
landscape had been changed by melting glaciers
(causing flooding) and the volcanic eruptions. The
hardest part was getting to sleep, we saw a sunset
which still meant it was incredibly light (Porsmork (56)).
The teachers organised a quiz for both team 1 and team
2 and we had a fab time (Porsmosrk (54)). After long
days of walking we were lucky to have a thermal pool
and sauna on the campsite to help relax (porsmork
(41))!
We were very sad to leave Porsmork as it was so
stunning, but we got back on the bus and headed back
to Reykjavik. Both teams had a meal together on the
final night before heading out whale watching. It was a
very choppy trip and we say the fin of a Minke whale,
but lots of puffins (Whale watching (6))!! On the final day
we got up early and headed to the blue lagoon, which
was an amazing way to end the most fantastic trip.
Relaxing in the geothermal pools and using their
amazing face masks helped us recover our sore feet
from all the walking.

And Finally…
“Riddlesdown Collegiate was one of just six
schools to post improved results!”
This week, Riddlesdown featured in
the Croydon Advertiser. Although
the article is discussing the recent
fall in Croydon’s overall GCSE
results, Mr Smith was proud to
discuss Riddlesdown’s continued
improvement and our best ever
results due to the hard work of
students and staff.
