Dear friends,

It is inspiring to see our students, faculty, and staff back on campus for another productive academic year. I would like to wish everyone a healthy and productive year. See you at the Bower School!

Focus On… The past 18 months have been difficult for many in the arts, but few have had a tougher time and been forced to adapt more drastically than those in theatre. Some of the graduates from FGCU’s Theatre Program, however, have found ways to keep theatre alive in their communities.

Katie Graves (Theatre, ’14) has been the Production Stage Manager at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre (WHAT) in Wellfeet, Massachusetts for the past several years. WHAT has adapted by presenting “outside, under the stars; physically distanced, emotionally close” productions, according to their website. Most recently, Katie was the Production Stage Manager for their performance of SHIPWRECKED! An Entertainment.

Gulfshore Playhouse Education’s STAR Academy has continued to offer classes and camps, culminating in performances. Aimee Greco (Theatre, ’20) has served as the Stage Manager for 6 of their musical productions during the pandemic.

Several alums have recently been hired by local theatres and will help those companies reopen or continue productions as they continue to adapt to the “new normal.” Dallas “Bubbles” Dusenchuk (Theatre, ’16) was just named Head Electrician through IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees), the union representing over 140,000 technicians, artisans, and craftpersons in the entertainment industry. Dallas will be working at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers. Julie McCracken (Theatre, ’21) has been hired as the Scenic Charge at Florida Rep in Fort Myers. Briallen Sanchez-Thurber (Theatre, ’21) just accepted a position at Central Casting in Atlanta, GA. She will serve as the COVID Coordinator and assistant to the casting directors. Elana Deutch (Theatre, ’19) has been an intern at JOY Records in Tel Aviv, Isreal. Kalie Minor (Theatre, ’20) is the Box Office Manager at TheatreZone in Naples.

Focus On (continued)… Finally, Savannah Forbus (Theatre, ’15) has been serving as a theatre teacher and director at Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce, FL. She has done Artistic Direction at Pineapple Playhouse, also in Fort Pierce. She created a youth theatre program during the pandemic to help keep students engaged.
