INTRODUCTION
For the past six years the State Council of Higher Education haspublished a report of selected characteristics and degree programs for Virginia'sstate-supported college..: and universities.
In January 1971, twenty-six accredited colleges joined together to formthe Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia. Working through the Council ofIndependent Colleges, the State Council of Higher Education has been able tocollect information on selected characteristics and degree programs from theprivate sector of higher education in Virginia.
This publication is the result of an increased level of cooperationbetween the public and private sector of higher education in Virginia. Bycombining data from independent institutions with information collected fromour state-supported colleges, a more comprehensive picture of higher educationin the Commonwealth can b' obtained.
This report has been developed to provide information frequentlyrequested by students, parents, and other adult citizens. Prospective studentsare encouraged to seek information concerning admission standards and proce-dures from the Directcr of Admissions at each institution in which they areinterested. Although costs are generally higher at the independent colleges,it should be noted that financial aid opportunities at these institutions maycompensate for the additional cost.
Although the State Council will be pleased to respond to questions of ageneral nature about information in this publication, requests for additional ormore detailed information should be directed to the individual institution.
All data included in the report are for the academic year beginningSeptember, 1972 and certain changes can be expected to occur in subsequentyear.
The State Council hopes that this report will prove to be a valuableservice to higher education in the Commonwealth. The Council welcomescomments and suggestions for future improvements in this publication.
