Drivers, brace yourselves for summer of traffic woesBY SEAN PEARCE

[email protected]

It has been said Canada is a land of two seasons: winter and construction.

And so it is with York Region. The snow may be gone for the season

(hopefully), but that simply means the region’s contractors are gearing up to begin another round of construction projects.

Probably the largest roads project this spring and summer will be the widening of Warden Avenue between 16th Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive in Markham.

Work starts later this month, weather per-mitting and will require the stretch of road to

be closed throughout the construction season to allow for the replacement of three existing water culverts with bridges.

Bloomington Road, from Bathurst Street to Hwy. 404, will also expand from two lanes to four this year, with construction to start this spring and continue through the fall. If you are travelling through the area, expect lane reductions.

Ninth Line in Whitchurch-Stouffville will also undergo a transformation.

The initial phase of construction begins this spring to eliminate the “jog” from the section between Hoover Park Drive and Main Street and add sidewalks and bicycle lanes,

while phase two will commence in the fall and see the portion from Major Mackenzie to north of Elgin Mills Road widened from two to four lanes.

Both Ninth Line projects will span the entire construction season and lane reduc-tions should be anticipated.

Another significant undertaking motorists may see during their travels is an intersec-tion project at Bathurst and Yonge streets on the East Gwillimbury/King Township bor-der. Work begins this spring and continues throughout the construction season.

The intent is to “urbanize” that intersec-tion, York Region’s roads branch director Brian

Titherington said, meaning the on/off ramps will be removed and replaced with a standard four-way configuration.

Motorists should also be on the lookout for reduced lanes this spring and summer as watermain construction occurs on Elgin Mills Road, from Enford Road to Bayview Avenue, in Richmond Hill and Kennedy Road, from 14th Avenue to just north of Hwy. 7, in Markham. Lanes will also be reduced in the Hwy. 27 and Parkview Drive area to allow for work at the Nobleton well and pumphouse in King.

All of those projects are in addition to the myriad of smaller road re-surfacing and reha-bilitation projects that will occur.

Executive unveiled; more questions dog groupBY KIM ZARZOUR

[email protected]

Richmond Hill residents have a few answers — and more questions — regard-ing a mysterious group that says it has been established to watch over town council.

A media release from the Richmond Hill Watchdog Committee has announced a new steering committee, elected April 10 — the same evening hundreds of residents and politicians flocked to a meeting about social housing in Ward 2.

That social housing project was one of the items criticized in the initial “Important Community Notice” flyer that was widely distributed earlier this month to residents throughout the town.

Many who received the notice through Canada Post contacted The Liberal wanting to know who was behind the group after their own queries went unanswered.

A story shedding light on connections between the group and some town council-lors was published last Thursday.

At 10:30 that same evening, a media release was e-mailed to The Liberal news-room stating the group has been watch-ing local council for months and hopes to become the largest ratepayers organization in Richmond Hill.

“The group has progressively been building momentum since their establish-ment; with the selection of their steering committee at a meeting last night,” the release said.

The steering committee is composed of Natalya Telenchenko, chairperson; Al Itwar, vice-chairperson; Farhaaad Abbaszadeh, treasurer; and Tony DiLorenzo, member-ship director.

Rob Davis, a former Toronto politician whose business Campaign Solutions Inc. and Rob Davis & Associates offers lobbying,

third-party campaigns and campaign ser-vices, said he was enlisted to help the group and said Ms Telenchenko, a chiropractor from Maple, would contact The Liberal for an interview.

Our newsroom has yet to receive her call and a call yesterday to her clinic in Vaughan was not returned. There was no answer and no answering machine at the Maple phone number available online for a Natalia Telenchenko.

Mr. Itwar, the vice chairperson, said in the release that the group will be formal-izing its constitution and asking the town clerk to add it to the list of ratepayer groups on the town’s website.

Mr. Itwar is listed as a member of a com-munity group called Road Watch, along with councillors Carmine Perrelli, Greg Beros and Godwin Chan.

Road Watch is one of the recipients of

funding from a Council Engagement and Marketing fund, controlled by the mayor.

The Watchdog Committee notice said members were “shocked and alarmed” to hear about a fund, referring to it as the mayor’s “special fund” with “free money” that he controls.

In 2012, $5,011.69 was given out from the council engagement fund for Road Watch tote bags for the Santa Claus Parade — one of the highest grant amounts.

The only allocation of the 108 funded through this account that was larger was L’Arche Daybreak, getting $5,544.64 for a fundraiser.

E-mails to Mr. Itwar through the Rich-mond Hill Road Watch Committee did not receive a response.

Mr. Itwar is also listed on the board of directors of Home on the Hill, a charitable organization formed “to provide and oper-ate non-profit residential accommodations and incidental services for persons of low or modest income including seniors and

disabled persons”.The two remaining Watchdog commit-

tee leaders could not be contacted.Mr. Abbaszadeh’s name is listed on

LinkedIn as owner of Atlas Pood Drapery with the same address as Richmond Hill Watchdog — 10165 Yonge St. — the same address where a meeting was held with Mr. Beros and Mr. Perrelli concerning opposi-tion to the social housing project The Hub. A phone number search connects him to a Maple address.

The Watchdog membership director, Tony DiLorenzo, was president of the cam-paign to elect Carmine Perrelli in 2009 and 2010.

The lack of information on those behind the group leaves residents such as Michèle Bussières demanding an explanation.

“It took the focus of the press to bring these people’s names forward — I don’t want the community to lose sight of the fact that these people tried to hide behind anonymity when they made their claims/accusations. When ordinary folks tried to get additional information via phone, web-site, etc. they were not forthcoming in iden-tifying themselves,” she said.

“The tone, exaggerated claims and, most concerning, complete absence of facts to support the so-called ‘issues’, leaves me sincerely questioning the committee’s motives.”

Allegations of council secrecy are unfounded, she said, pointing to informa-tion widely available on the engagement and marketing fund on the town’s website and several public meetings to deal with contentious community issues.

She also questions where the funding is coming from to support the Watchdog group’s efforts.

“Sending a glossy mailing out to a large number of residents doesn’t come cheap. If the Watchdog Committee is going to ques-tion use of public funds, then they should also be prepared to be transparent in dis-closing their funding sources.”

For more resident reaction to the Watchdog Committee, see letters on page 6.

Natalya Telechenko is the chairperson of the steering committee of the new Rich-mond Hill Watchdog Committee. Several attempts were made to obtain an inter-view, as residents complain they want more answers on who is behind the group, using the logo seen at right.

‘Sending a glossy mailing out to a large number of residents doesn’t

come cheap. If the Watchdog Committee is going to question use of public funds, then they should also be prepared to be transparent in disclosing their

ou may have heard the term filibuster when it concerns heated dis-cussions among federal politicians on Parlia-

ment Hill. But right here in your town, we have our own filibuster-ing politicians.

For weeks and months, all nine politicians of the Town of Richmond Hill have been working on our 2013 budget, figuring out what taxes we will be paying on our homes and properties for the remainder of this year.

In a multi-million corpora-tion, which the growing town is, crunching the numbers is no easy task and no one is suggesting the process is easy or should be done with undue haste.

But two councillors especially have been holding up the process of approving the operational bud-get by proposing seemingly end-less large and small amendments.

Councillors Greg Beros and Carmine Perrelli have proposed more than 30 amendments — with Mr. Perrelli proudly pro-claiming in his newsletter and verbally to anyone and everyone that he insists on a “line by line” discussion of every item in our budget.

If filibustering is the “use of irregular or obstructive tactics by a member of a legislative assem-bly to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favoured by a majority” as one dictionary defines it, councillors Perrelli and Beros have made this an art form.

They want you to believe

Y

2 councillors have been obstructing, filibustering

Our 2013 budget has been held up by continual filibustering

by two councillors.

BOTTOM LINE: Obstructing the majority will of a council is not

democracy at its finest.

that you, as taxpayers, benefit from their careful examination of each budget item and savings they achieve, large and small, to reduce the tax rate you ultimately pay.

This sounds good, but the reality is not so good. Marathon meetings in recent weeks have diverted staff attention from their regular duties as they sit in end-less budget meetings in case their input is needed.

Councillors’ tempers are fray-ing and personality conflicts are consuming debate time, as last week’s “pen clicking/kindergar-ten” outbursts demonstrate.

Although Councillor Nick Papa supported many of the amend-ment tactics of fellow councillors Beros and Perrelli, he got so upset and frustrated at Monday night’s special meeting to approve the budget that he stormed out and didn’t even vote on the budget.

The division on council is vis-ible for all to see, with residents Monday night attending council committee on another matter so frustrated at least one yelled out his objection to yet another diver-sionary tactic used by councillors Perrelli and Beros.

The majority did rule and our budget was passed Monday.

But this was not democracy at its finest. This was obstruction-ism. This was the workings of our duly-elected council being held up by filibustering tactics.

Tell these two what you think of their tactics and remember all this when you’re asked to vote for a new slate of councillors in 2014.

LETTER OF THE WEEK

Use Terry Fox money for active campaignRe: Town’s Terry Fox tribute in limbo over funding, April 11.

I was happy to read that funding for a Terry Fox trib-ute in the form of a statue, billboard or street name has been questioned and hope-fully averted.

It’s not that I don’t believe that a tribute is appropriate, however, it should be in the form of active participation within the cancer-fighting or cancer-care arena.

I believe the legacy of Terry Fox was to do some-thing, to get involved, to engage Canadians in the fight against cancer. How does an inanimate object contribute or perpetuate that legacy?

Ghandi’s statue at Yonge and Hwy. 7 is a perfect exam-ple. Why is it there? What is the connection to Richmond Hill? What does it commem-orate? Perhaps $300,000 was spent without perpetual value beyond the year or two at the time of erection and commemoration.

I think the tribute should support some type of cancer initiative here in our town. Is there something related in the hospital? Maybe it can be seed capital to a new cancer fighting department? Is there an initiative within the hospi-tal foundation that this trib-ute can support? Are there worthy, active groups and/or facilities that can use the funds in a direct and active

manner within cancer care environments?

Money is a tool — espe-cially municipal money — the best results are derived when it is put to work to do something or engage some-one, as opposed to being parked somewhere to be idolized. Pretty soon every statue, sign or billboard loos-es its luster, forgotten, and falls into disrepair.

Keep investigatingRe: Mystery group, April 11.

Keep up the great inves-tigative reporting about the Richmond Hill Watchdog Committee.

We need to get to the bot-tom of who is making these allegations. We hope The Liberal publishes more arti-cles exposing those who cast aspersions on our fine, hard-working mayor and regional councillors and we need more objective reporting.

It can only help Rich-mond Hill residents make informed decisions about their council representatives in upcoming elections.

S. L. TONGE & FAMILY RICHMOND HILL

Parents should help fight childhood obesityRe: Community volunteers could help you get more exer-cise, editorial, April 11.

It is funny to see how a

newspaper so concerned lately with being weary of big government is now turning to public education to be the complete solution to child-hood obesity.

One group of people glar-ingly lacking from the solu-tion are parents.

It is easy to blame others (teachers, administrators) for obesity rates, but what are parents doing to ensure their child’s health? When did we decide to wholesale the physical care of our children to the education system?

If we want our schools to continue producing world-class education, as recent PISA results show, do we have the time to do some-thing that is, apparently, not being done at home?

NELSON DE CASTRO RICHMOND HILL

OMB should not overrule local councilsRe: Our infrastructure can’t keep up with OMB-approved development, letter by Janine Purves, April 4.

The pace of growth and development definitely out-strips our services and parks and the developers do not care about the environment.

The OMB is definitely too powerful and shouldn’t over-rule the municipal councils who know what is best for the community.

L. BOSWELLRICHMOND HILL

We should demand to know who is disrupting our townRe: Mystery group, April 11.

“Who is behind Richmond Hill Watch-dog Committee?” was an excellent headline, since that exact question crossed my mind when I found the fishy flyer in my mailbox.

The Liberal’s comprehensive article just confirmed what my gut instinct had already told me.

I agree with David Lawrence that an investigation is in order; in fact, the citizens of Richmond Hill should demand one.

Someone was obviously trying to pull a fast one on us. As a taxpayer, I would like to know exactly who is seeking to antagonize

and disrupt the running of our wonderful town.

Since Richmond Hill is a thriving, grow-ing town, I’m sure we have many new citi-zens who are puzzled and confused by all these shenanigans.

To those people, please know that this type of politicking is NOT the conduct I’ve witnessed in my 30+ years of living here.

This is all relatively new and many of us are very disturbed and saddened by it.

Hopefully, the silver lining to all this will be citizens pulling together to combat such divisive and negative behaviour and we’ll come out stronger and more unified on the other side. Let the investigation begin!

Have you received any robo calls recently?

Or to put it in more positive terms, have you been invited by an automatic telephone generated message to offer your opinions or participate in a telephone town hall meet-ing?

While the term robo call took on a negative connota-tion during and after the last federal election, more and more politicians, parties and lobby groups are using tele-phones as a way to reach out to us.

Last week was a busy one for robo calls in my Richmond Hill household.

Monday, we were informed of a telephone town hall meet-ing of Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi with Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca that would be happening the next evening.

Then Tuesday evening another automated call came in inviting us to participate and offer our opinions to that same Moridi-Del Duca town hall in the lead up to the pro-vincial budget.

I have learned that resi-dents living in the Oak Ridg-es-Markham riding of MPP Helena Jaczek were similarly invited to participate in her telephone town hall on the budget.

A rather irate man from Oak Ridges called me to com-plain that he had picked up his home phone Tuesday eve-ning to make an outgoing call, and was unwittingly involved in the electronic town hall.

He told me he couldn’t hang up or disengage his phone from this automated discussion and was unhappy that his phone was tied up for some period of time.

“What if I needed to make

an emergency call?” he com-plained.

Another caller from Rich-mond Hill was even angrier about the Moridi town hall invitation.

He was so upset he told me he called the Liberal Party of Ontario to insist they delete his phone number from their calling lists and added his phone number to the Do Not Call registry.

I heard strong complaints from another Oak Ridges gen-tleman on a telephone survey concerning amalgamating fire services across York Region.

While I believe it is mostly an issue driven by proponents in our northern municipali-ties, the Oak Ridges man said he answered the survey ques-tions about fire safety and fire departments working togeth-er because he thought he was doing his duty as a citizen.

He didn’t know (or tell me) what organization was spear-heading the survey, but told me the questions seemed to favour amalgamated fire departments.

He was “shocked” that the final two questions on this supposed fire safety survey asked him to rate his satisfac-tion with his ward councillor and one of Richmond Hill’s regional councillors, calling this “inappropriate”.

I understand a similar fire

amalgamation phone survey was done in Vaughan and that survey respondents were similarly asked to rate their satisfaction with municipal politicians in that city.

Also last week, an Aurora resident told me her home message service received an invitation to participate in a Canadian Automobile Associ-ation telephone town hall on traffic gridlock in York Region.

She was forced to listen to a portion of the actual meeting before she was able to delete it.

Our home also received that CAA invitation. On my old-fashioned message machine, it was simply a short, informa-tive message from CAA offer-ing the website and phone contacts should we want to participate in the upcoming opinion forum.

Negative reactions to automated surveys and opin-ion events should serve as a warning to political leaders, campaign teams and lobby groups seeking our opinions and eager for our input.

There can be a backlash from residents who feel their personal time and space is invaded.

As far as I am concerned, the initial invitation from MPPs Moridi and Jaczek to inform us of a town hall the next day was fair game. It provided a number to call if I wanted to participate.

But calling again the next night with another invitation was unnecessary and, some would say, an unwelcome intrusion.

If this is the new frontier — the modern way groups, orga-nizations and political parties will be engaging our opinions — then sensitivity and com-mon sense must prevail.

BY JASMINE HONA Richmond Hill teacher welcomed and

encouraged drivers to honk at him while run-ning 22 kilometers from Newmarket to Rich-mond Hill yesterday.

Langstaff Secondary School physical educa-tion teacher Petja Taivassalo wore a T-shirt with “Honk 4 Boston” printed in bold letters as he ran from home to his Richmond Hill school between 6 and 8 a.m.

The response he received during those two hours was overwhelming, he said, as York Region drivers honked incessantly to show their support.

“My hand got tired really quickly, because I made sure to acknowledge and wave to every driver that honked,” said Mr. Taivassalo.

His initial response to Monday’s Bos-ton Marathon bombing was utter disbelief. Although he did not personally know anyone who ran the famous marathon, he struggled to comprehend the tragedy that killed three and maimed hundreds.

“I couldn’t understand why anyone would attack the marathon, since running has always been a way of healthy living. I asked myself what I could do and decided to use running as a tool to raise awareness,” said Mr. Taivassalo.

He has been a teacher at Langstaff since 2000 and the head of the phys-ed department head for two years.

He also hoped his run would show his stu-dents the importance of staying active and supporting the community.

“What Mr. Taivassalo did was really great, and it raised a lot of awareness in both the school and community,” said Langstaff student

teacher Dror David.Mr. Taivassalo’s own father, senior national

champion runner Keijo Taivassalo, once ran the Boston Marathon in four hours and still plans to participate at the famed event next year as a 75-year-old.

Mr. Taivassalo says Boston is “too much for me” but plans to run with his father for the sec-ond time at the Toronto Marathon May 5.

“Running is in my blood. I recently ran a 30km half marathon with my wife around the bay in Hamilton,” said Mr. Taivassalo, who inspired one of his students to run that race as well.

Approved town budget means $77 average tax hike

BY KIM [email protected]

It took until nearly midnight Monday night, but Richmond Hill approved its operating budget for 2013 and residents now know just how much more they’ll be paying in municipal taxes.

The operating budget calls for a 2.5 per cent increase — approxi-mately $31.31 for an average home assessed at $523,000.

Adding on the York Region budget increase of 1.63 per cent on a resi-dential property tax bill, the increase amounts to $77.31 this year.

The budget journey was a long and bumpy one, extended, referred and deferred several times in response to last-minute queries and amendments presented by council-lors, in particular Carmine Perrelli and Greg Beros.

Their attempts to alter the budget late in the process — because they said they wanted to find additional savings — caused frustration and a motion by Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora to end debate after 11:30 p.m. Monday and force a vote. A majority approved, with Mr. Perrelli and Mr. Beros the sole dissenters.

The budget is being billed as one that balances growth with respon-sible spending.

“All of our highly-valued services will continue and some will even be enhanced — services that make Richmond Hill a place to live, work and raise a family that is second to none,” said Mayor Dave Barrow.

NEW PROGRAMS, SERVICES

It provides for new programs and services, including implementation of the responsible pet ownership pro-gram, the town’s 140th anniversary celebration, continued implementa-tion of the cultural plan, develop-ment of new environmental strategy with services to mitigate Emerald Ash Borer damage, distribution of rain barrels and a new watering pro-gram for newly planted trees.

Also in the works are new strat-egies for the town’s website, festi-vals and events, staff positions in the Oak Ridges library, firefighters, an IT project manager, recruitment advisor, transportation planner and a director-level position for commu-nications.

Council also increased the seniors’ tax assistance grant to $324 per eligible applicant.

“Staff and council have done an admirable and thorough job in what has been a difficult, challeng-ing process,” said budget chairper-son and Regional Councillor Bren-da Hogg.

The two councillors’ last-minute “blockade” of amendments were

presented in an unprofessional way, she said, and represented minimal savings.

“We can be proud we achieved a reasonable tax rate increase when the extensive pressures facing the corpo-ration were well over seven per cent.

‘DEBT-FREE’

“Richmond Hill is growing and thriving while remaining debt-free and that is the type of fiscal respon-sibility that residents can and should expect,” said Ms Hogg.

The budget process this year extended beyond what was origi-nally anticipated.

Mr. Spatafora noted it began last year and proceeded with presenta-tions department by department.

“We have debated this ad nau-seam,” said Mr. Spatafora.

Mr. Perrelli and Mr. Beros accused the other councillors of short-cutting the democratic process. They, along with Ward 5 councillor Nick Papa, expressed disappointment they couldn’t continue presenting cost-saving ideas.

Mr. Papa stormed out of the meet-ing, calling Ward 4 councillor Lynn Foster a “parrot” and did not vote on the budget.

Yesterday Karen Cilevitz of the David Dunlap Observatory Defend-ers, who attended all budget com-mittee meetings as a resident observer, described the budget pro-cess “a very difficult journey for both council and staff”.

“I believe we can make greater strides on behalf of our residents if [budget] questions are posed in a respectful manner as opposed to an antagonistic, confrontational one. This can only produce greater co-operation and engender mutual respect between staff and council,” said Ms Cilevitz.

Richmond Hill’s tax rates remain lower than most GTA municipalities for residential and commercial tax rates, according to the town release. Ongoing efficiency reviews gener-ated more than $900,000 in savings or redeployment for the 2013 budget year, it said.

Public consultations at Hillcrest Mall, the chamber of commerce and an online budget survey sought feed-back from the community.

Council has also approved the 2013 water and wastewater budget, reflecting an 8-per-cent increase, which is driven by the rate charged to Richmond Hill by the region and for which the town is required to recoup the costs.

Council approved the 2013 capi-tal budget of $44.6 million, plus the 10-year capital forecast Dec. 10, 2012.

WHAT WAS SAID:“[We’re] sending the message to residents that unless it’s significant savings, it’s OK to waste money ... I have no less than 17 amendments that I want to bring forward ... but I guess taxpayers won’t have us to fight for them. I urge everyone on this council to forgo the thought that we should just move on ... that they consider the job of being a coun-

cillor and [if] being financially responsible causes them nausea, maybe they shouldn’t be here. This is not about whether [the amendments] are valid or not. This is about somebody just wanting to go home because they’re tired. - Carmine Perrelli“Don’t be fooled by this accusation that somehow we’re trying to circumvent some democratic process. It is my view that this democratic process ... has become orches-

trated and taken over by people who, I believe, think they are doing something of great value for a certain percentage of their constituency. I personally don’t see it that way; I see it as minor [savings]. The greater cost here for me became how we are present-ing ourselves ... as a council ... It’s eroding morale of staff ... and members of the public who have watched or listened have also said they are very frustrated.” - Brenda Hogg

Trudeau right choice for Richmond Hill: local Liberals

Sarkis Assadourian of Richmond Hill (left) said he was proud to wit-ness Justin Trudeau’s first day in the House as newly elected Liberal leader. A former MP in Don Valley North then Brampton Centre, Mr. Assadou-rian also ran for council in Ward 3 in the 2010 municipal election.

BY KIM [email protected]

Local Liberals say they’re thrilled to have a new leader to help them rebuild their party.

Justin Trudeau easily won the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada Sunday in Ottawa.

Now it’s time to follow his lead and rebuild the party, riding by riding, said former Richmond Hill Liberal MP Bryon Wilfert.

“It’s like building a house, brick by brick,” he said. “We have to get in the trenches and get to work.”

Mr. Wilfert said Mr. Trudeau is a choice well-suited to Richmond Hill.

“There’s a strong middle class in this community and people who think progressively socially and are interested in issues such as climate change,” he said.

Mr. Trudeau will attract the votes of local young people, those interested in retooling and retraining initiatives and in attracting good investment to Canada, he predicted.

“In this riding, people want change.”Mr. Wilfert lost his seat by 4,400 votes to Conservative

candidate Costas Menegakis in the 2011 federal election after 25 years representing Richmond Hill as a municipal and federal politician.

‘ELECTRIFYING’

Mr. Wilfert said he attended the weekend’s leadership event and felt it signals a new optimism.

“There was a sea of red. It was quite electrifying.”Along with new young faces, there were older ones

too, including former prime ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin.

“We were seeing people we haven’t seen in five or 10 years because they now see a credible alternative. There’s a real sense of opportunity out there and commitment to go forward.”

The Liberals are facing third-place standing and the challenge of rebuilding party finances, membership and voter support before the next federal election in 2015.

Mr. Wilfert said he has worked with Mr. Trudeau, knows him “quite well” having shared his expertise on the Asian Pacific Rim, and has supported the new leader “from the beginning”.

“It’s not just a name,” he said. “The reality is we elect someone we believe is going to be able to take us to gov-ernment. He brings a great deal of energy and opportu-nity to bring new members and new supporters.”

At the same time, he stressed it’s a team effort, adding it’s important not to get fixated on leaders — “You have a problem, you don’t call the leader, you call the MP.”

Mr. Trudeau speaks about innovation, opportunity and skills Canadians need — young people to enter the work force and older ones facing downsizing, Mr. Wilfert said.

‘READY FOR NEW RIDINGS’

As the vice president in charge of communications for the Liberal Party in Ontario, and past-president of the Richmond Hill federal Liberal association, Jason Cher-niak said Liberals in Ontario are “on the ground, building up our organizations”.

“We are getting ready for the creation of new ridings and we are approaching prospective candidates,” said Mr. Cherniak, a Richmond Hill lawyer.

“As promised by Justin Trudeau, Richmond Hill will have a completely open nomination” for the next federal election, said Mr. Cherniak. “If you want to vote for the local Liberal candidate, all you will need to do is sign up as a member for $10.”

As for the Trudeau attack ads by the Conservatives, Mr. Wilfert said it’s an indication the Tories are worried.

“It’s not very classy to launch right into an attack sug-gesting he’s not up for the job. Harper wasn’t up for the job either — but when he ran, what expertise did he have?”

BYJEREMY [email protected]

If you think most distracted drivers are young and inexperienced behind the wheel, you are dead wrong, according to the OPP.

In reality everyone’s doing it, sometimes with fatal results.

On the first day of a week-long OPP blitz, Sgt. Dave Woodford stopped two peo-ple himself, one he described as a “middle manager” and family man engaging in a conference call while zipping down the highway.

He had his phone up to his ear, saying his

hands-free unit was broken, he said. That doesn’t make it right, according to

the officer, who promptly issued him a $155 ticket.

MORE DEADLY THAN DRUNK DRIVING

For the first time, distracted driving on Ontario’s highways has killed more people than drunk driving by a rate of 15 to 13 this year.

That is on top of the 83 killed last year as a result of the rising trend.

In the past few years, there have been countless tragic stories, including that of Emy Brochu, the 20-year-old who died

moments after sharing romantic texts with her boyfriend, Mathieu Fortin.

The final message before the crash said: “I love you too and I’ll try to make you happy Mr. Fortin.”

In 2011, a 17-year-old Barrie driver was allegedly texting and trying to pick up her cat when she lost control and hit a parked car in a driveway.

The crash created a domino effect, dur-ing which a boat and a neighbouring home were also hit, causing more than $100,000 in damage as well as injuries.

Distracted driving takes many forms, Sgt. Woodford said.

It can be calling, texting or even caused by kids in the car, he said.

“It’s a growing concern (and) it’s becom-ing as serious as drunk driving. For many, it’s like a habit. It’s about trying to break that habit.”

DRIVER PICKING UP CAT

Last year, 16,000 distracted driving charg-es were laid by OPP and, so far this year, offi-cers have laid 2,900.

All of the OPP’s 6,000 officers will be focused on catching offenders for the rest of the week.

Try Nordic pole walking clinics

Certified instructors Peter and Carol-Ann Den-nis are offering free instructional Nordic pole walk-ing clinics on various weekend mornings through-out the spring.

May 5 the first Nordic pole walking clinic will be offered at David Hamilton Park in Richmond Hil, and similar clinics will be offered May 11 and May 19.

Nordic pole walking is a low-impact and enjoy-able exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels that engages more than 90 per cent of all body muscles.

It is the fastest growing outdoor activity in the world, as it burns 46 per cent more calories than normal walking and can help eliminate back, shoulder and neck pain.

It can also help reduce the risk of high blood pressure, cancer of the colon, diabetes, heart dis-ease and stroke.

At the beginning of class, participants will be fitted to a new pair of Nordic walking poles and taught the techniques of using them properly.

Prior enrolment is required and each clinic usually lasts an hour and a half. Private lessons can also be arranged.

For more information or to register, call Mr. Dennis at 905-771-1543 or e-mail [email protected]

Jully Black in line for third Juno BY DAVID LI

Jully Black earned a 2013 Juno Award nomination for her single Fugitive and hopes to capture her third career Juno Award this weekend.

The singer-songwriter is a former Rich-mond Hill resident, now living in Markham, who won her first Juno in 1997 at the age of 19 in the Best Rap Recording category for her single Whatever It Takes.

Ms Black, 35, who is this year nominated in the R&B/Soul Recording Of The Year cat-egory, says living in York Region has had a significant artistic influence on her music.

“There’s been a level of calm and peace,” she said at the 2012 Juno Awards welcome reception last year. “It’s just home.”

Having captured her second Juno in 2007 for her R&B single Revival, she is perhaps best known for her song Seven Day Fool which was released later that same summer, becoming a top 10 hit in Canada.

Her talent combined with her longevity and success has given her the opportunity to work with the music industry’s biggest names including Jay Z, Kanye West and Celine Dion; and has many music insiders referring to her as Canada’s Queen of R&B.

One of those insiders is Aurora musician Spiros “Spee” Chalkiotis, lead singer for the rising Canadian pop band, Neverest.

“Her music is so soulful and it’s so raw,” said the front man for Neverest, a band best

ENTERTAINMENT: Diva last won award in 2007

known for their single, About Us which topped the MuchMusic charts in 2010. “She brought back that pop blues sound; her music is so exciting and she’s just amazing.”

He adds that the R&B/Soul Recording of The Year category should prove to be highly competitive, as Vaughan’s Melanie Fiona and Shawn Desmond have also been nominated.

The 2013 Juno Awards will be handed out at the Brant Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan this Sunday.

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada will hold its annual Richmond Hill-Thornhill-Aurora fundraising walk Sunday, May 5 in Richmond Hill.

Register as an individual or grab four or more friends to make a team.

Teams receive one-on-one support from the MS Society, established plans and tools to track goals, mate-rials to help recruit and fundraise, as well as the chance to participate in special events and win exclusive prizes and awards.

Participants in the local walk must check in at 9 a.m. at the Elgin West Community Centre, 11099 Bathurst St., before starting their 5-kilometre or 10-km route.

The early check-in date is May 4 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The MS Society provides services to people with mul-tiple sclerosis and their families and funds research to find the cause and cure for the debilitating disease.

With more than 28,000 members, the MS Society is the only national voluntary organization in Canada that supports both MS research and services.

Since 1948, the core support of the MS Society has been from tens of thousands of dedicated individuals, companies and foundations in communities across Canada, as it receives almost no funding from govern-ment.

MS walkers who raise $10,000 or more also have the option of attending the national MS walk.

The Central Region Ringette finals turned out to be a memorable one for six Richmond Hill Lightning entries as each came home with medals.

In the Under 14-Minor division, the Light-ning under 14B-Thompson team advanced to the final and blanked Markham 5-0. Vivian Araujo, Kassandra Trianni, Kylie Thompson, Lyndsay Reid and Leah Balkovec each scored once.

Katie Platzer stopped every shot to record the shutout and received good defensive sup-port from Kyle Thompson, Lidia Silvestri, Viv-ian Araujo and Jocelyn Langlois. Up front, the constant checking of Rachel Angaran, Kassan-dra Trianni, Micaela Sotirakos, Erica Siow and Sakina Jiwan forced numerous turnovers.

U14B EARNED GOLD

In the Under 14B Major division, the Light-ning under 14B-West team advanced to the final and defeated Sunderland 5-4 to claim the gold medal. Alessandra Tuzi had a hat trick with singles from Elizabeth White and Serena Perera.

Helping preseve the win were some timely saves from netminder Brianna Cake along with strong defensive play from Jessica Ewere, Olivia Leung, Elizabeth White and Katherine Hamil-ton. As well, tight checking from forwards Julia West, Bianca Isadoro, Amy Thompson, Zoe Rodney and Grace Dutra limited Sunderland’s

chances to set up in the offensive zone.In the Under 16B division, the Lightning

under 16B-Booth team reached the final against Sunderland before settling for the silver medal after falling 5-3.

Jessica Wilson, Brynne McArthur and Annal-isa Adragna each scored once for the Lighting, who trailed 3-0 at the half before mounting a comeback that fell short. In reaching the final, the Lightning went undefeated during round robin play defeating Oshawa 3-2, Sunderland 4-1 and Newmarket 4-2 thanks to strong goal-tending from Rachael Booth.

Scoring in the round robin was Raquel Branch with four goals, Annalisa Adragna three, Kerra Shukster two, and singles from Sofia Her-czegh and Jessica Wilson.

The Lightning Under 10-Zanon team reached the final against Whitby before falling 8-6. Madeline Angaran and Jordan Ho each scored twice for the Lightning while singles from Kaylin Joy and Madi Schuetze. The Light-ning went undefeated during round robin play with wins over Oshawa 4-1, Pickering 8-3, Markham 8-1 and Newmarket 8-1.

The Lightning under-12B-Gosio team advanced to the championship game against West Muskoka before falling 4-2.

The Lightning started the tournament with a 13-3 victory over Whitby before posting an exciting 1-1 draw with the regular season divi-sion leaders from West Muskoka.

The Lightning then bested Markham 11-1 but needed a win or a tie in their final round

robin match against their rivals from New-market in order to secure a berth in the cham-pionship game.

Trailing 3-1 with seven minutes remain-ing, the Lightning scored a shorthanded goal to get within one and then tied the game with two seconds left on the clock on a goal from Marisa McRae to vault the team into the championship final.

The final was a re-match against West Muskoka and, despite battling to the very finish, the Lightning was unable to replicate a similar come back, falling 4-2.

During the tournament, the Lightning received spectacular goaltending from Victo-ria Gosio with exceptional defence from Joely Sosnovich, Tyra Rosnuk, Madelin Gennaro, and Saveena Jandoo. Players Lina Kohandani, Gaby Damien, Julia Turner, Jasmine Hamilton, Emilie Kuepper, Maija McGraw and Marissa McRae created the offence.

In the Bunny division, the under nine-Joy team started the tournament slowly with an 8-6 loss to Whitby before posting victories over Oshawa 5-4, Markham 9-2 and Sunderland 7-0 to finish first overall in the division.
