Location, Location, LocationRichland Center, the county seat, is situated halfway between LaCrosse and Madison, within the Ocooch Mountain region of southwest Wisconsin. This position is also placed at the mid-point between the big-city markets of Chicago, IL and Minneapolis, MN.

U.S. Route 14 and Wisconsin Highway 80 intersect in Richland Center, providing convenient links to other major arterial highways running through Wisconsin. Running along Richland County’s south-ern border is the 100-mile Wisconsin River from the Empire Prairie to the Mississippi river.

Two airports are available in the area for use by the general aviation community. The Richland Center Municipal Airport is situated fi ve miles east of Richland Center in Sextonville and features 3,200 x 60 foot asphalt runway and a 1,500 x 100 foot turf airstrip. Approximate-ly 15 miles southeast of Richland Center is the Tri-County Regional Airport in Spring Green. This public airport is equipped with two as-phalt runways – one stretching 5,000 x 75 feet and the other 1,850 x 60 feet.

HistoryIn 1842, Richland County came into being. Wisconsin itself was a young state gaining statehood in 1848. Five years earlier, the county’s population had swelled to 232 and by 1850 it had 963 residents. In 1851, Richland Center was platted by Ira S. Haseltine. It covered 16 square blocks. Haseltine offered land and other benefits to the county if it would move its seat of government to Richland Center from Orion, on the Wisconsin River. In 1852, the move was approved. Throughout the remainder of the 1850s, Richland Center grew as a commercial and financial center in the county. With a past full of citizens like Frank Lloyd Wright and Ada James, and landmarks such as the A.D. German Warehouse, the Maple Side Footbridge across the Pine River and the first municipal auditorium in the State of Wisconsin, Richland Center is a historical area. Our population is a melting pot of ethnic groups. Norwegians, Germans, and Czechs settled in the Richland Center area.

Today, with more than 5,000 residents, Richland Center is the only incorporated community in Richland County. The city’s central loca-

tion in the county and its signifi cance as the county’s commercial and cultural focal point make the community the ideal base from which to explore the rest of beautiful Richland County, as well as Spring Green, historic Mineral Point, Wisconsin Dells, and Prairie du Chien.

Frank Lloyd WrightIn 1867, a man was born in Richland Center who was destined for international fame. Frank Lloyd Wright returned to the city in 1915 to put his unique imprint on it. In that year, A.D. German, a wholesale grocer and coal dealer, asked Wright to design a warehouse. What Wright created is known today as “The Warehouse,” an impres-sive red brick structure topped by a high band of concrete frieze that shows Mayan infl uences. The structure rests on a cork pad providing shock ab-sorption and stability.

The fi rst fl oor of the A.D. German Warehouse is now open May 1 - October 31, Sundays - 10 AM - 2 PM.

Ada JamesAda James is Richland Center’s most prominent suffragette and known for her work with disad-vantage children and women. In 1892, she and several other high school girls formed the Equality Club to assist in the campaign for women’s suffrage. Thanks to their efforts, in 1919 Wisconsin became the fi rst state to ratify the 19th amendment. Women voted nationwide for the fi rst time in the presidential election of 1920.

1st Municipal AuditoriumThe Richland Center City Municipal Auditorium was built in 1912. The Women’s Federated Council pushed the city council to be pro-gressive and establish a place of culture and governance. This is the fi rst municipal auditorium (both theatre and government offi ces in one setting) in the state of Wisconsin. The dream is to fully renovate and restore the building, and the process is currently underway.

Purple Heart CityThe Governor designated Richland Cen-ter as Wisconsin’s Purple Heart City in 2002 – the place these distinguished awards are given each summer to men and women who have earned that high honor. Local and state dignitaries take part in

the yearly ceremony, along with the American Legion. Our American Legion Veterans Memorial Flag Park is located on Highway 14 West between the UW-Richland Campus and Krouskop Park. You’ll see the fl ags blowing as you travel Highway 14. There is a Memorial Day Parade in Richland Center, and we hosted the Purple Heart State Con-vention as well as a Purple Heart Harley Run in 2003.

Richland County Veterans

MemorialIn March 2003, the Richland County Veteran’s Memorial Committee was formed because it was felt that Richland County was long overdue for a Veteran’s memorial. This memorial, ded-icated to all Veterans of Rich-land County, starting with the War of 1812, will honor those who have served, those who are serving and those who will serve.

It will list names of individuals who have been military personnel of a war, confl ict, or in peacetime, a resident of Richland County at some period in their life and who have been honorably discharged by the military (names are being veri-fi ed). We have the support of all the military Richland County or-ganizations including the various American Legion and VFW posts, as well as the Wisconsin Vietnam Vets, Disabled American Veter-ans, Chapter #70 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and all associated auxiliaries.

This Memorial is located along US Hwy 14, and actually is lo-cated next to the old railroad de-pot where our Soldiers/Marines boarded as far back as the Civil War to go off to war.

Effigy MoundsRichland County and Southern Wisconsin is where thousands of earthen monuments in the shapes of animals, spirit fi gures and hu-mans were built by ancient peoples. These fascinating mounds pro-vide us with rare insights into the ideas of those bygone people. Inter-nationally famous, the mounds have few items deliberately included that might help to explain them – adding to the mystery. The mounds were built 1,000 years ago, between A.D. 750 and 1050. The end of the mound construction coincides with the arrival of foreigners from the south (Illinois). Most, but not all, of the effi gy mounds contain human burials. All mounds are regarded by Indian people as being sacred.

Ocooch Living History Center

The Ocooch Living History Center is a mon-ument to the Native American people. Com-plete with colorful fl owers and waterfalls, the Ocooch Living History Center recognizes Indian societies as complex and diverse prod-ucts of history. The center gives a large history

of Native Americans in Wisconsin starting with fi rst coming to the Americas and the rise of Indian civilizations. It goes further in depth by showing how Wisconsin Indians lost their homelands and fi nishes with foundations for the future. Located next to Our House Senior Living, Ocooch Living History Center aims to give everyone a broader understanding and appreciation of Native Americans in Wisconsin.

AgricultureThe dairy industry leads the sales of agricultural commodities pro-duced in Richland County. Milk from area dairy farms is processed into fl uid milk and cheese at the fi ve dairy production plants in the county. Beef, row crops, commercial vegetable crops, apple orchards, Christmas trees, timber and direct-marketing sales also contribute sig-nifi cantly to the total agricultural business sales.

Agriculture provides 41% of the jobs in Richland County and generates about 49% of the county’s total business sales. Taxes generated by the agri-culture industry pro-vide a tremendous economic base for the county and provide sig-nifi cant support for the local schools.

Richland County is included in the Driftless Region of southwest Wisconsin. The western side has rolling hills and scenic valleys with a large number of dairy farms, apple orchards and timber. The eastern and southern parts have lower slopes and sandy soil, excellent land for row crops and commercial vegetable production.

The Pine River Recreation Trail presents an unusual assortment of ecosystem, including lowland hardwood forests, cattail marshes, the Sextonville tamarack bog, an oak savannah, prairies, and jack pine barrens. Each of these ecosystems is briefly described on County- sponsored markers installed by an Eagle Scout. The trail traces the course of the meandering Pine River from Richland Center south to the swift-flowing Wisconsin River, near Gotham.

The 14.3 mile trail is generally flat and is constructed of asphalt in the City and of well-compacted crushed limestone in the County. Fifteen bridges along the route span lengths of 16 feet to 241 feet for the magnificent curved bridge south of Twin Bluffs. In the City the trail is located on the dike on the east side of the Pine River. Be certain to note the historic footbridge which westsiders use to come into the central city. You may want to tarry a while in the City Arboretum, which has 65 types of trees, each labeled with a brief description. As it leaves the City, the trail is built on an abandoned railroad right of way, which runs all the way to Lone Rock.

The trail may be used for hiking, bilking and snowmobiling. No other motorized vehicles are allowed. Dogs must be on a leash. This is a “carry-on, carry-off” trail, and you are invited to enjoy the picnic tables located along the trail for resting and picnicking. No permit or fee is required for using the trail. The trail is maintained by the City of Richland Center and by Richland County.

Twin Bluffs. In the City the trail is located on the dike on the east side of the Pine River. Be certain to note the historic footbridge which westsiders use to come into the central city. You may want to tarry a while in the City Arboretum, which has 65 species of trees, each labeled with a brief description. The Arboretum also contains over 100 shrubs and perennials. As it leaves the City, the trail is built on an abandoned railroad right of way, which runs all the way to Lone Rock.

The entire trail may be used for hiking and biking; outside of the city the trail may be used for snowmobiling, weather permitting.

In Richland Center, the trail starts/ends in Krouskop Park on Hwy. 14 West. In Krouskop Park, there is adequate parking, restrooms and drinking water.

In Twin Bluffs there is parking, a shelter, a picnic table, and a porta-potty.

In Gotham, the town park is on Fulton Street, one block south of the trail and its intersection with Hwy. 60.

In Lone Rock, from Hwy. 130 go west on Richland Street to the trail head/end. There is parking here.
