Comments from Colleen

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great summer and you have experienced a smooth transition back to school and fall ac-tivities. I have appreciated all the patience you have shown me on my road to recovery from cancer. I have com-pleted my fifth of six chemo treatments. Hopefully by the end of September those treatments will be behind me and I will whiz through the radiation treatments. I am glad to announce that we received $600.00 in support from the JCPenney August Round-up Dollars! Please make an effort to complete the JCPenney Customer Satisfaction on-line survey (you will receive a 15% off coupon that can be combined with other offers) and mention that we appreciate the support that they have shown to Richland County 4-H. We have been able to support: our local developing archery programs; appreciation gifts for our leaders; members attending enrichment programs, etc. Basically this keeps the 4-H council out of the poor house without the need to conduct bake sale and other time consuming dollar gener-ating activities. We have three great incentives to offer to members and clubs who choose to become Healthy North Da-kota 4-H Clubs. Please refer to these two websites to find out more information: http://www.ndsu.edu/4h/projects/group_projects/#c58124 http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/news/newsreleases/2010/sept-20-2010/4-h-clubs-practice-eating-smart-playing-hard/view First aid kits sponsored by Sanford Health: Each member that commits to doing a club demonstration focusing on first aid kits or Health Project will receive a very nice first aid kit. These demonstrations should be recorded in the club meeting minutes. Bike helmets sponsored by Betaseed, Wal-Mart and JCPenney (All small and medium helmets were donated by Betaseed.): Each member that commits to doing a club demonstration focusing on the importance of bike helmets or leads a bike fitness activity will receive a bike helmet. These activities need to be recorded in the club meeting minutes. Twenty-five dollars to each club for fruits and vegetable activity demonstrations or snacks sponsored by the Moving More Eating Smarter Grant and JCPenney dollars: Each club that commits to fruit and vegetable activities or demonstrations will receive cash to support your club activities as leaders see fit. These activities need to be recorded in the club meeting minutes. Deb, Crystal and many leaders have been working hard preparing for the annual 4-H awards banquet. Please thank your leaders for a great year at the annual banquet! I hope to see you and your families at the 4-H ban-quet. (Bring grandparents and/or your special friends or family to the banquet.) On that note, if you bring a non-4-H friend to the 4-H Awards Banquet, who would be a poten-tial 4-H member, you will receive a certificate for a free 6-inch sandwich at Subway. 4-H week is coming! J What are you doing to promote 4-H? What can we do to help you???

Leaders please bring your calendars to the awards banquet so we can plan a council meeting.

See you soon, Colleen

Sweet Lesson! Carmen Paquin, Paquin's Sweet Harmony in Breckenridge, taught cake decorating to members of the Believer's Club on Sunday, Sept. 12. The kids came prepared with one- or two-layer cakes that they baked at home and Carmen taught them how to correctly frost and decorate their cakes. The kids used a variety of frosting tips to make stars and shells and Carmen even helped them to roll out and cut shapes and letters from fondant. In addi-tion to teaching the kids about frosting and decorating, Carmen showed them how to give a good presentation on frosting, com-plete with visual aids, and gave them numerous baking tips for creating award winning cakes. The finished cakes were beautiful and unique, just like the kids who created them, thanks to Paquin's Sweet Harmony.
