In 1995 we

challenged its

accuracy

and got a

FWI - MODIS Satellite Sensor

On Terra (am) and

Aqua (pm) satellites

• Direct Broadcast to

ground

www.landgate.wa.gov.au

• Transmits same

data back to USA via

TDRSS satellites

• Thermal sensors for Fire Detection (1km)

• Visible and NIR sensors for imagery (250m)

FWI program 2008/09

• Network connections (Aug-Dec 08)

• Train ICO’s in building servers (Nov 08)

• Implement servers in Indonesia (Jan-Feb 09)

www.landgate.wa.gov.au

Feb 09)

• Training in burnt area mapping and use of FWI (Mar – Apr 09)

• Follow up in Indonesia (May-June 09)

Page 20: Richard Smith - Developing improved forest fire management through partnerships with agencies in Indonesia

Satellite Remote Sensing Services, Landgate

Future Possibilities of FWI

• Use of MODIS Imagery

– Forest area mapping

– Integration of other spatial data

www.landgate.wa.gov.au

– New users (Provincial Governments, Universities, NGOs)

• Higher resolution satellite imagery

• Collaboration between Agencies

So What?

• First world depends on the bottom 80% for

cheap consumer goods and services, but also

• First world demand for hardwood, paper and

palm oil destroys tropical rainforests

www.landgate.wa.gov.au

palm oil destroys tropical rainforests

• Rainforest destruction adds 18% of global CO2

emissions which causes global warming

• FWI is part of Australian-Indonesian Forest

Carbon Initiative to reduce this 18%

• Much more needed, Remote Sensing critical
