This was part of an Ofsted national survey and was a follow-up to a survey visit 2 years ago. The findings of the national survey will inform Ofsted in its annual report on Gifted and Talented students. The inspection visit was a very positive experience both in terms of outcome and key message for the school. We are pleased that the progress of our Gifted and Talented students remains ‘good’ in the context of the national picture, and that provision both within and beyond the curriculum remains a real strength of the school. Our transition arrangements, both in preparation for secondary school and college beyond, was also positively judged. Whilst the inspection judgement noted the very high standards in students’ books in most classes, we need to continue to work on consistency across all classes in each subject. This includes: Ensuring Gifted and Talented students are able to work creatively and independently, engaging in high order and complex tasks Ensuring teacher assessment is dialogic, allowing students more opportunity to make improvement as a direct result This will continue to drive the work of subject leaders and the senior team in the coming weeks and months. Congratulations Congratulations to the Year 11 football team which recently won in their county semi-final match against Pool School. We wish them all the best for the final. Well done to all students who recently took part in the regional cross country event. There were many notable performances including: 1st places for Lizzie Peverley- Barber and Sam Gapp. 2nd place finishes for Jazmin Rowe, Abu Gupta and Taig Stevens All participants contributed to overall team results, where in 8 categories, our school gained 4 runners up places and 4 victories, winning the Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Boys, Year 8 Girls and the Year 10/11 Boys. Oxford University Taster Day Last weekend the students pictured left had the rare opportunity to experience a day at Oxford University—without tuition fees! Students are pictured outside of Merton College, which is one of the oldest colleges at Oxford and dates from 1264. We look forward to reading a student report in the near future.

Year 11 Gifted and Talented Languages Workshop with Exeter University

O n the 7th November, a number of our Year 11 students made the short trip over to Truro College to participate in a languages workshop run by Exeter University. Students started the day in a lecture theatre with students from schools all over Cornwall, where they listened to a talk from a

university lecturer. Dr Leveridge is a well-known speaker and advocator of the study of languages; she gave an inspiring and informative talk about our country’s growing need for linguists and how useful the knowledge of a language is for finding a job. Our students spent the rest of the day working in teams and playing the part of a team of employees working to convince an international company to build a theme park in Cornwall. Employees needed to demonstrate and develop skills in many of the

areas that linguists may find themselves using in the workplace. They completed a series of workshops in which they researched French or Spanish theme parks with the use of their websites exclusively in the target language; they translated a document from French or Spanish into English and another from English into French or Spanish; they worked as interpreters for other members of the team and taught a short lesson to other students. Saffron Blake said: “This was an excellent and inspiring day, I was really pleased to be a part of it. I was able to practise important skills like translation and interpreting and get a taste for what it would be like to work in languages. I’m seriously considering studying a language next year for A level, I think it would be a useful and interesting option choice; not to mention how good it would be for getting a job in the future. Thank you Truro College for a brilliant day!”.

A pair of star crossed

lovers …

R ichard Lander took part in the Shakespeare Schools festival for the fifth time last Thursday evening. Our chosen play was Romeo and Juliet. Four schools performed four short versions of some of Shakespeare’s finest works. Poole School took on Much Ado About Nothing, St Ives performed King Lear and Truro Prep created a magical version of A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. Our Romeo and Juliet had a “retro future” theme with a black and white chess board style. Each character had a different chess piece on their t shirt (Thanks to Mr Burley). The Capulets were in white and the Montagues were in black. Our white stage blocks were set around the stage to build different scenes representing chess pieces being placed on a board.

The performance fizzed with energy – the fight scene was so convincing (Thanks to Mr Nash) and the balcony scene looked so realistic with the beautiful moon and stars backdrop provided by the Hall for Cornwall. The soundtrack took us all back to the 80’s with music including Visage, Echo and the Bunnymen and Bronski Beat. Chrissy Warren choreographed the dance routine for the ball scene and she then taught this to the other students with Nyasha Muzarurwi. Cam Hughes not only played Tyblat but also wrote music for the cello which he played to accompany the balcony and death scene. The haunting sound of “Mad World” on the cello as the star crossed lovers took their lives was a memorable moment. Jacob Moran worked alongside the Hall for Cornwall sound and lighting technicians and operated the lights on the evening. This was a fantastic opportunity for all of those involved and I thank the whole cast for working so hard to produce such a polished performance. Luckily we get to do it all over again for the year 8’s on

25th November in the school hall.

Lest We Forget - Remembrance at Richard Lander School

O ver the course of the last

academic year students have been preparing artwork, poems and family

stories to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War One. This week some of those students were invited to attend a Cornish Schools Service of Remembrance at Truro Cathedral. One of the highlights for students was the dropping of poppies onto the

congregation from the Bell tower, which was screened live by the BBC as part of their Remembrance programme. The students were excellent ambassadors for the school and if you do have a chance to visit the Cathedral and view their work it is well worth a visit.

Garden Club meet Countryfile’s Adam Henson at the Patch and Acre Grand Opening! Report by James Nankervis Jack Robertson and Thomas Ingram-Brown

O n the 30th of October we went to the grand opening of the flagship Patch and Acre store. Whilst there, we had a peep around the store, noticed some really helpful garden tools and we also met the presenter of Countryfile, Adam Henson. He gave us a little lesson on farm animals

and farm life. He also answered all of our questions. One question was ‘Do you have a Unimog?’ He said he did but it set on fire and burned! (For the initiated a Unimog is a type of 4x4—Ed) There were also animals; there was a pony called Bruce Almighty, there was also a turkey, emerald ducks and sheep. There was also a competition about guessing the weight of the sheep where the winner won the sheep. While we were

there we watched a Cornish band and there was a food stall with burgers, hot dogs and curry and a drink stall that sold Cornish tea, coffee and scones with jam and clotted cream Adam Henson cut the ribbon to open the store in front of a mob of customers waiting to get their books signed by him. .

Operation Christmas Child The students pictured here are representatives from some of the tutor groups who donated most to Operation Christmas Child this year. The idea of sending shoeboxes to children less fortunate than themselves certainly captured the imaginations of tutees in RAnr, GSKi and REBo! Some members of support staff also contributed a shoebox of their own. Mrs Reavill has been supporting the scheme for many years and likes to include her contact details in her box. She is still in touch with 2 Romanian sisters who she sent a box to over 10 years ago!

Local Final at Truro College

T wo Students from Richard Lander went to Truro College on Monday 10th November for the local final of the Future Chef competition. The competition saw Amy Rand and Mara Crowe go up against various schools from the Truro and Falmouth area and took place in the ‘Spires Restaurant’ kitchen where the students had access to a full range of industrial equipment. Mara cooked a roulade of chicken

on a potato rosti with seasonal vegetables and a chicken jus. To follow she made a steamed coffee and walnut sponge with a chocolate and coffee ganache and espresso syrup. Amy made pan fried fillets of sole with crushed new potatoes and sauce Grenoble followed by apple tart with cider caramel sauce. Both girls worked really well and even though there were a few problems and mistakes both girls managed to cook and plate their food. The judges spent a very long time deliberating over the final verdict but after a long wait it was announced that three would be going on to the next round. Both Amy and Mara were chosen to go through along with a final

student from Penair. All three have now been asked to cook at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow in early December. Congratulations to both girls who did extremely well and really did the school proud. Good luck for the next round.
