aboutI have always been interested in design. As a child I was always drawing something. Growing up
with a father who was a professional printer I used to love going to “help my dad” at the shop
on Saturdays. I became interested in how the process worked... concept... setting type... layout...
camera-ready... the printing press.
After college my first job was as a Quadex 5000 typesetter for The Great Atlantic & Pacific
Tea Co. in Paterson, NJ (better known as A&P Supermarkets). Here I built on the knowledge
and skills that my father had instilled on me as a youngster. Years, and jobs, later, I entered
the digital age. Where once before, and not that long ago, there was a whole team of highly
talented specialists working together in an agency or department, there was now one person
doing the jobs of all those people. Graphic designers had to learn new skills and forget old ones.
The pace increased exponentially to the point where what used to take weeks to do could now
be accomplished in just a few hours.
Always wanting to be my own boss I started my own design firm, PC Type, in the late 1980s.
Moonlighting at first, I was soon able to go full-time in 1995. I provide design and production
services for all types of printed projects, as well as support for digital projects. My clients range
from small businesses to global leaders in their fields, many of them for over a decade.
I would be thrilled to have you as a client, too. Please take a look at my work in this book and
contact me to see how I can help take your marketing materials to the next level.

IntroductionPolyurethane topcoats are commonly used in the construction industry over functional floor coatings or as sealers for concrete. In response to the need for coatings with low VOC, Bayer has developed two-component waterborne (2K WB) polyurethane coatings and sealers with properties similar to those of two-component solventborne polyurethane coatings. For many years, solventborne polyurethane topcoats have been the standard for flooring due to their very good properties and ease of application. However, tighter VOC regulations and increasing sensitivity to solvent odors make it undesirable to apply solventborne topcoats.
Based on proven PU technology a new generation of waterborne polyurethane topcoat resins has been developed to be high performance, near zero VOC and easy to use. In addition, the performance properties — hardness, abrasion resistance, gloss retention, and chemical resistance — are equal to those of traditional two-component solventborne systems.
Key Benefits
Along with the fact that these 2K WB systems can be formulated with varying degrees of gloss and ultra-low VOC levels, they also possess the following properties:
• Odorless
• Abrasion resistant
• Chemical resistant
• Hot tire resistant
Bayer’s two-component flooring coatings can be used in a variety of applications:
• Pigmented basecoat with a clear topcoat
• Clear penetrating sealer over polished or troweled concrete
• Clear chemical resistant topcoat over decorative epoxy flooring
Sourcing and Application InformationLow or high gloss clearcoats as well as pigmented formulations have been developed, along with primers and basecoats. Many national and regional coating suppliers offer commercial coating systems based on the Bayer MaterialScience 2K WB technology. For information on where to source this technology, please contact Bayer MaterialScience at 412-777-3983.
Application Guidelines — Topcoat
Bayer’s two-component waterborne floor coatings can be applied by brush or roller. A 3/16” nap or foam roller is preferred. The application equipment should be selected to ensure an even, puddle-free coating of approximately 4- to 6-mil wet film thickness (WFT) per coat which will dry to a 2- to 3-mil dry film thickness (DFT). Dry times will vary depending on ambient conditions. WB systems are sensitive to temperature and humidity changes as shown below.

CovestroBuilding upon years of materials innovation and market leadershipSince inventing polyurethanes and polycarbonates decades ago, Covestro has continued to be driven by innovation, delivering new technologies and solutions that help make a positive impact on people’s lives every day. While this strategic focus on materials has remained constant, over the years, the company’s businesses – and names – have changed.
The origins of the company can be traced to 1863, when Friedrich Bayer and Johann Friedrich Weskott manufactured and sold synthetic dyestuffs in a small German town called Wuppertal. By the turn of the century, Bayer® Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) had been introduced to the world and was quickly hailed as the “drug of the century.”
In 1954, a joint venture named Mobay Chemical Company was formed to manufacture and market polyurethanes in North America. After a series of name changes, mergers, acquisitions and reorganization initiatives, Bayer MaterialScience, a subgroup of Bayer, was formed in 2003.
This evolution continues: On September 1, 2015, the organization redefined itself in a new light as Covestro – an independent company. Covestro LLC is the legal entity for the company’s U.S. business operations.
Covestro has a bold new vision for the future – to make the world a brighter place by creating material solutions that push the boundaries of innovation and sustainability.

Specialty and Technical ApplicationsThere are many situations where the properties of safety clothing may mean the difference between life and death. One example is the clothing worn by firefighters. Yet there are other technical environments where reliability and strict conformity with requirements are needed to prevent damage and ensure cost- effectiveness.
Developing PUR systems for specialty technical applications is a difficult and often very time- consuming job that carries a great deal of responsibility. We know. Our technicians can support you in this process with expert advice and provide products of consistent quality that meet all specifications.

MilestonesCovestro, formerly Bayer MaterialScience, the inventor of polyurethane, is a world leader in polyurethane coating technology. Around 50 years ago, the company succeeded in developing polyurethane resins to coat textiles. To date, Covestro has set many milestones in developing new applications. Market requirements are the driving force in all our development work. On the world market Covestro tradenames Impranil®, Desmodur® and Bayhydur® are synonymous with
innovative products based on years of experience. Our development work aims to enhance the service properties, durability and appearance of coatings and the cost effectiveness and environmental compatibility of processes. In order to meet our ambitious goals and maintain our technological leadership, we invest a great deal in optimizing systems and processes for polyurethane applications.
“ The past will always be displaced by the future, and the future will always build on the past.”
— Aurelius Augustinus, 398 AD
Leadership is Based on ExperiencePUR: 50 years of Covestro experience
1937 Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience) invents polyurethane
1951 Covestro introduces a coagulation process based on polyurethane (PUR) for the manufacture of PU coated textiles for an alternative to natural leather. Tradename: Imprafix®.
1958 Direct coating of textiles with two- component PUR systems made possible: With Impranil® C and CHW. At the same time Covestro researchers develop the appropriate crosslinker systems. Tradename: Imprafix®.
1967 Textiles can now be coated by the transfer process: With the one-component PUR solution Impranil® ENB.
1968 Textile coating made more environ- mentally compatible thanks to the aqueous PUR dispersion Impranil® DLN from Covestro.
1986 Microporous PUR systems from Covestro enable water-vapor-permeable coating of textiles. Impraperm® ensures maximum wear comfort
1991 Compact coatings with enhanced water vapor permeability: With optimized Impraperm® products.
1999 Non-cleaving solvent-free products added to the Impranil® product range.
2003 DMF/Tol-free aliphatic Impranil® products.
2006 New Impranil® 60% high-solid dispersions.
2014 Covestro receives bluesign certification. The bluesign system unites the entire textile value chain to reduce its impact on people and the environment. Through the principle of Input Stream Management, Covestro ensures that approved chemical products and raw materials are used throughout the entire value chain.
Covestro launches INSQIN® Waterborne PU technology for the apparel and footwear industry. INSQIN® is not only solvent free but adds astounding quality to PU coated textiles, and provides material sustainability, optimized innovation scaling and supply chain transparency.
2015 Covestrol launches the INSQIN Partner Manufacturer Program – an industry first initiative which seeks to foster best practice collaboration between upstream suppliers, manufacturers and brand owners.

Keeping DryWhile tents must provide protection from the rain, they are also exposed to a great deal of wear and tear. Because they are sometimes packed away wet, they must be resistant to hydrolysis and able to withstand a few weeks in their bags while damp. This applies to tents used for both leisure and military purposes. Coating systems from Covestro give you the security that your products can meet all these requirements.
A Firm GripHandle tapes coated with Covestro polyurethanes ensure a firm grip on rackets – not only at the start of a match. Even when a player’s hands are wet with perspiration, his grip on his racket should not slip. However, it is not only the coating that determines the quality and cost-effectiveness of your products but also the processes and production technology used. Our experience can help you gain the upper hand.
Reliable in UseFire hoses are life savers used in extreme conditions. Resistance to water and hydrolysis are as important as abrasion resistance. Coating the outer textile sheath of fire hoses with Impranil®-based coatings safeguards their functional properties and extends their service life.
Hygiene ProductsRubber undersheets are a thing of the past in hospitals and care homes. Today, comfortable and breathable undersheets are used instead, made possible by high-quality PUR coating systems from Covestro.
TechnicalWe have identified even more applications for coatings based on Impranil® technology. In addition to the almost classical uses of PUR coatings in fashion clothing, sportswear and automotive components, coatings based on Covestro products are now also proving their quality in coatings for:• conveyor belts• heat-resistant clothing• safety gloves• surgical wear and gloves• abrasive rollers• environmental textiles• hygiene textiles
The variety of applications for PUR coatings shows the application flexibility of our products. Our creative team will work with you in the customization process, to help you ensure the market success of your products

Automotive Nothing exceeds the comfort, appearance, feel and durability of leather. Is there anything better? Yes, there is: PU coated textiles based on Impranil high-solid products from Covestro. Outwardly, it is hard to distinguish between PU coated textiles and natural leather. However, the properties you can’t see – especially durability – are what make PU coated textiles much better than natural leather.
PU coated textiles are an excellent alternative, not only to natural leather but also to PVC coated textiles, which they beat by a long mark on appearance and comfort. Moreover, the production of PU coated textiles have environmental benefits and are virtually emission-free. Isn’t it time you switched to PU coated textiles for your car interiors?

SportAchievement in sport demands full commitment. The clothing and footwear worn by athletes, like the equipment used, must withstand a great deal. Breathable materials are now indispensable. Athletes demand a lot from their clothing. Coatings based on Impranil technology give your products the properties that exceed the requirements of even top-class athletes.
Outdoor Clothing: Facing up to Wind and WaterOutdoor pursuits require clothing that provides reliable protection from wind and rain. At the same time, perspiration must be diffused away from the skin. To ensure a long service life, the products must also be resistant to washing and dry cleaning. A range of properties that can be produced using PUR systems based on Impranil® technology guarantee victory for your products.
Accessories: Non-slip and DurableGloves for mountaineers or goalkeepers are of no small importance. Their non-slip properties and durability may be the decisive factor in surviving, in winning or losing. No need to worry if they are enhanced by a coating made of Impranil® technology.
Balls and Sports Shoes: Greatly Reduced Water AbsorptionComfort, durability and reliability are the key characteristics of successful products in the ball and sports shoe segments. Impranil® technology high-solid coatings give your products outstanding mechanical properties such as abrasion resistance, bending resistance and handle. A further example of the functional properties of coatings based on Covestro products: water absorption is much lower than that of natural leather. This means that the products maintain a constant weight, even when used in heavy rain. It will make your product the product of winners. Always – because we keep our eye on the ball.

WE ARE THE RELENTLESS
INNOVATORS...For more than a decade, Sentek Global has
provided mission critical, highly technical
expertise to support both government and
commercial partners. Our Department of Defense
certification training, IT project management,
military command and control systems engineering, and
commercial networking security systems help to ensure the
fidelity of our customers’ systems.
We approach all we do with surgical precision, steely-eyed
determination and a collaborative spirit. Because it’s a high-
risk world out there, it takes both intelligence and grit to face
it. Our “People First” approach means we seek to understand
the problem not just in terms of technology systems, but also
in terms of the business challenges faced by the people who
will operate the system. By doing so, we create workable and
innovative solutions for our commercial and government
partners, on time and within budget. We put our heart
and soul in what we do for organizations. This “Relentless
Innovator” spirit is a key reason we’re asked to solve the
complex problems that have thwarted others.

Turkish Business CultureBusiness dress is conservative. Business hours are between 9–noon and 2–5, Monday–Friday.
Ramadan is observed as a holiday and businesses are typically closed during this time.Turks prefer to do business with people they know. When first meeting a business contact,
expect the appointment to be social rather than business-oriented. Although English is widely spoken, printed business materials should be provided in English
as well as Turkish.
Turkish Work Permit Process
1 Foreign National’s Work Visa Application is Submitted at the Turkish Embassy or
Consulate AbroadHost Company’s Work Permit Application is submitted to the Turkish Ministry of
Labor & Social Security within 10 days of visa application submission
2 Once the Work Permit & Work Visa Applications are approved (approximately
30 days), the foreign national will be asked to return to the Turkish Embassy/
Consulate for visa fee payment & issuance
3 Foreign national must apply for Residence Permit at the Foreigner’s Branch of
the Local Police Department within 30 days of their arrival in Turkey
How Goel & Anderson can assist your organization in TurkeyOrganizations that wish to employ foreign workers abroad require an immigration service provider with a record of successfully coordinating and delivering global, business immigration services for multinational organizations. Goel & Anderson practices exclusively in the field of immigration to assist your company with the recruitment, hiring, and retention of foreign workers across the globe, including Turkey. We understand that time and resources are valuable to your business and that staffing an international project can be critical to your business’ reputation and success. We are committed to efficiently delivering business immigration solutions that combine broad global coverage with a depth of local expertise.
We carefully select co-counsel who share our service and compliance-oriented approach to meet the needs of organizations doing business in the global marketplace. Our Global Immigration Practice group and local counsel work closely together to ensure comprehensive business coordination and seamless delivery of services. Our immigration services include end-to-end processing, including: Work Permit and Visa Application preparation and
filing; detailed guidance on the visa stamping and residence permit application process; and tracking key expiration dates. Personal representation at the Turkish Embassy or Consulate abroad and Local Police Department may be available.Generally, only locally registered entities may sponsor foreign nationals for work permits in Turkey and limitations on the number of foreign workers may apply. Thus, if your Turkish office anticipates engaging foreign talent, an early analysis of immigration options and strategies, as well as a thorough understanding of the sponsorship obligations, will better position your project for success. We also understand that despite careful planning, emergent issues can arise. We are well positioned to assist your business to address unexpected business requirements. Because global immigration matters do not occur within a vacuum and the law is infrequently static, we seek local experts who may also assist with a range of related legal services, including corporate formation, contracts, employment agreements, licensing, and transactions, and who will advise of changes in policy and procedures.
With headquarters outside of Washington, DC in Reston, Virginia and operations in Pune, India, Goel & Anderson is an immigration firm that is international in scope and personal in nature. “ Our marketing reps are no longer limited to visiting an agent once a month or once a quarter. With MiAgents they can now “visit” them every day by monitoring the critical alerts on their key accounts such as a large upcoming renewal.”Dave Brown Director of Marketing Oregon Mutual Insurance
SOLUTION
To help in this mission, OMI sought the help and guidance of a business partner Millbrook and their new MiAgents Agency Relationship Management Application.
Using MiAgents, OMI is able to give early warning information on key business components that affect the agent book of business: ■ Key / large loss information ■ Key renewals that are coming up ■ New business / renewal ratios
■ Production alerts on each and all lines of business ■ Detailed information on lost business
RESULTS
Retention – MiAgents alerts that highlight key account renewal information allow OMI to work with agents to ‘save’ accounts that are sometimes missed or that may have certain challenges. New Business – The information that MiAgents provides allows
OMI to work directly with agents to better identify and capitalize where product performance is strong and also better identify and address where product performance is weaker.New Focus on Channel Relationships – By providing tangible and measurable business value to both sides of the carrier / agency partnership, OMI is acting as a game changer in the industry by providing a measurable process for agency relationship management and driving brand loyalty at the same time.New data insights – OMI has the ability to analyze data and
trends that were traditionally unquantifiable. OMI marketing managers now spend more time in the field gathering intelligence about their business, service, products, prices, special programs, ease of doing business, and technologies.
In the first few months of the MiAgents implementation, OMI was able to work with their agents to retain several key accounts.
“ This initiative shows our continued investment in the agency partnership model by providing relevant, real-time data and information, leading to action oriented business sessions.”Bryan Fowler Vice President of Information Technology Oregon Mutual Insurance

tapes each day wasn’t zapping enough
resources, the real killer affecting Time Warner
Cable was the inadequate performance,
functionality and support of its tape-based
backup and restore process. Running Veritas
BackupExec to backup its Unix servers could
take as long as eight hours. Novell NetWare
servers using Computer Associates ARCserve
could take two to three hours to back up.
Provided that the condition of the data on
the media itself was acceptable, recalling tapes
from their offsite facility often would take
until the next day.
Recognizing the need to improve
performance and reduce manpower resources,
administrators at Time Warner Cable had
to automate the backup and restore process
and somehow streamline the backups of the
divergent platforms into a single process.
Working with Cerdant, an EVault value-added
reseller based in Dublin Ohio, Time Warner
Cable spent about six months evaluating
a range backup solutions: Some leveraged
iSCSI technology, others the vendor-agnostic
capability of network-attached storage and
some, like EVault, included disk-to-disk
backup software.
Time Warner Cable selected the EVault
InfoStage online data protection and recovery
software solution, which in combination with
Cerdant’s cost-effective integration, won out
over IBM/Tivoli and Legato Systems.
Redundancy Breeds Availability
The opportunity to replace their tape-based
backup process also enabled Time Warner
Cable to evaluate its own disaster recovery
preparedness. Montgomery and Archer
wanted to implement a more tolerant
environment in the more likely event of
hardware failure or some kind of human error.
Time Warner Cable turned to Cerdant
to integrate the EVault online, disk-to-
disk software into a turnkey solution that
eliminated any single point of failure. Once
EVault InfoStage makes block-level scans
across each server for new or modified files
since the last back up, it creates a file of
“changes.” That pool of changed data is
compressed down to as much as two percent
of the original file size (depending on the
application) and encrypted before formatted
into a standard OS-independent text file
format and sent over the public or private
network to a storage array or “vault” located
offsite. Instead of making daily backup tapes,
Cerdant helped fulfill Time Warner’s desire
to have a fault-tolerant storage array for the
backup target. They installed and configured
a 1TB array with RAID5 (drive striping) with
dual power, fans and processors.
Conclusion
Ultimately, EVault InfoStage efficiently
automated the primary backup system
for Time Warner Cable, and through its
UltraRecovery option, was able to provide
an additional fault tolerant layer by
replicating backup data to an off-site disk-
based data vault.
The saving of Christmas Eve also proved
to the network technicians at Time Warner
Cable that whether they were easily creating
data protection policies or restoring across
different platforms, having a “lights-out”
backup and recovery software provides a very
intangible yet very important benefit—peace
of mind.
“What’s really valuable about this is that you
can configure the software and then forget
about it,” Montgomery says.?To learn more about which

OPPORTUNITY
Oregon Mutual Insurance (OMI) is the oldest independent mutual
insurance company west of the Mississippi (established in 1894),
serving Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho and Nevada. OMI
offers personal, commercial and farm insurance and enjoys an
“Excellent” rating from A.M. Best. OMI treat their 650 agents as
their own internal sales force and strongly believe that providing
information that is specific to the growth and health of their
businesses is an investment that will pay off with increased loyalty
(retention) and business generation (new business).
OMI recognized an opportunity to drive more revenues and
visibility with their customers by increasing the strategic and
operational value of OMI’s marketing information and organization
to their agents. The main business goals of the initiative were to:
■ Increase retention and net new business
■ Increase the overall quality of OMI’s book of business
within agencies
■ Strengthen the carrier / agency partnership and drive
brand loyalty
■ Transform ‘field intelligence’ into quantifiable data
To achieve all that, OMI realized they need to equip their marketing
reps with the ability to receive real-time alerts and drill down on
individual accounts when marketing reps are meeting with their
agents in order to zero in on the most relevant accounts.
Challenges
Early on in the process, OMI realized that they need to address the
following key questions if they want to succeed in this program:
■ How do you collect information that is rarely available?
■ How to know what is the most relevant OMI information for a
particular visit?
■ How to optimize the preparation and overall meeting
performance?
■ How to turn “gut feel” information into data that is quantifiable
and can be trended and analyzed over time?
■ How to replace low-response agent surveys with quantifiable
field intelligence?

Case Study EVault InfoStage™ Saves Holiday for Time Warner Cable
Time Warner Cable provides more than 11 million customers in the U.S. with cable television,
Internet access and video services. Its Northeast Ohio operating division, based in Akron,
provides these services to more than 386,000 of those customers. Behind the scenes, unknown
to the subscriber watching television or surfing the Web, sits the division’s IT infrastructure that
handles several responsibilities including storing business-critical billing, inventory and other
technical services information. On Christmas Eve, Time Warner Cable suffered a significant server crash. The server ran a
critical network-monitoring application, which administrators called “their first line of defense”
for diagnosing and fixing problems. Staring at the possibility of losing his window into the
operations of some 500 devices, administrator Scott Montgomery had to quickly find a solution
to get that application and its data up and running. Despite the holiday, Montgomery, and his
supervisor, Tim Archer, the data systems network manager, knew they could not “fly blind”
when it came to monitoring their environment for another 48 hours. Two significant problems loomed: The malfunction to the downed Windows NT 4.0 server
was such that it could not be quickly rebooted or fixed and there was no other readily available
NT server for migrating the data without working on Christmas. With cross-platform restore
capability in its recently installed EVault InfoStage™ software, the technicians knew the faster
option would be to migrate the data over to a working server running a different operating system. “Normally, this is not something we would want to try especially on December 24, but we were
confident that the EVault software could handle this,” recalls Archer. Valuable time was saved because there were no tapes to declare and have rushed in from an offsite
facility. Montgomery started out in the late morning and restored the data from the Windows NT
4.0 server to the Windows XP server in plenty of time to get ready for St. Nick’s arrival. “Without EVault technology to help us restore data from that server, I’m sure I would have been
working on Christmas,” says Montgomery. Like many data centers, Time Warner-Northeast Ohio’s IT infrastructure evolved into a multi-
platform environment, with each server running its own applications. In total, this 800GB
environment contains some 500 devices including six servers and one AS/400 mainframe, running
several operating systems (Unix, Novell, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Citrix). As is often
the situation with heterogeneous environments, individual processes and overall management are
required for each particular OS. Cross-Platform ChaosThe organization’s backup process typified their IT complexity. Each server platform required its
own backup software and service pack, and cross-OS communication was poor, making it nearly
impossible to provide any kind of reporting information that is required for comprehensive,
centralized management. If the time to create and manage the migration of dozens of backup

Building Better VisibilityWhen Build.com purchased a new Cisco Unified Contact Center Express (Unified CCX) platform, it also looked to upgrade its existing contact center wallboards. Isherwood, along with the company’s director of information technology, considered a number of vendor options including the built-in Cisco dashboard. Build.com chose Inova Solutions’ Performance Tracker®, a highly customizable web-based dashboard capable of displaying relevant real-time data throughout the contact center, including on-screen views for executives and center agents with line-of-sight difficulties, assuring everyone within the company is “on the same page.”Inova’s LightLink® software – capable of capturing raw data from a number of business system sources – extracts the data supplied by Build.com’s Cisco Unified CCX platform, translating and transforming it into actionable metrics for display on wallboards and desktops.
Inova experts worked closely with Build.com to customize a visibility solution that aligned perfectly to their needs. The six wallboards display key performance indicators (KPIs) for its nine teams, and the customizable colors, columns and graphical displays make it easy to determine center performance at a glance.
“Now I can be anywhere on the sales floor and see exactly what is going on,” Isherwood reports. “I have visibility into the summary data, certainly, but I can also see in real-time team-by-team data and even the status of individual agents on those teams.
Knowledge is PowerWhile wallboards may seem only incidental to the operation of a contact center, the visibility they provide are critical to an operation like Build.com, which instills a strong customer service ethic not just among its reps, but throughout the company. Reps are free to structure their time to meet their responsibilities, knowing exactly the status of the operation without supervisor intervention – or admonishment. For instance, when a customer service rep owes a customer an outbound follow-up call, but notices the team’s high call volume, the rep can delay the call until any backlog of inbound calls has abated. When Inova Performance Tracker indicates a high number of callers waiting, alerts are sent and additional employees can jump into action, including vice presidents on up to the chief operating officer. This reduces the abandoned call percentage, a key metric that Isherwood and his team watch closely.“The earlier we catch the spikes, the better off we are,” says Isherwood, “otherwise the rest of the workday can be difficult.”
Let Inova Display its Expertise“Inova helped us think through what was important to see and built a solution that worked flawlessly…they exceeded our expectations.” Build.com has not experienced any adverse issues with their wallboards. “They have been ‘bulletproof,’” Isherwood says. Isherwood also appreciates the ability to make tweaks to the displays themselves, without the need to call in outside help. But perhaps most important to a company that prizes its customer service over almost every other virtue, is fostering an environment of self-management where employees can be successful in making Build.com a success. “We don’t accept what is. When our team sees an opportunity to make something better, they do it. The visibility provided by Inova not only enables good decisions, but lets each individual on our team see the difference they are making.” Isherwood says
With a growing business, a laser-focus on customer satisfaction, and a consistently high net promoter score1 makes Build.com’s culture one worth supporting.

Build.com Builds Exemplary Customer
Service With Real-Time Visibility
Build.com, a Chico, California-based online
retailer of over 700,000 building supplies,
caters to consumers – both do-it-yourselfers
and homeowners – and contractors in the
building trades, and has grown in both
size and reputation during its fifteen years
in business.
Of its 370 employees, 150 of them man the
single contact center that fields approximately
200,000 calls, including 120,000 calls from new
customers, each month. Even with this high
volume of inbound calls, Build.com focuses on
the metrics that really make a difference in the
delivery of its customer service.
“Unlike most contact centers, we are not
fixated on the time our reps spend on calls,”
says Dave Isherwood, Director of Sales for
Build.com. “We encourage our agents to spend
as much time as necessary to serve customer
needs and build relationships.”
Build.com encourages customer service
representatives to build relationships with
customers with whom they are working,
eliminating the need for a customer to
repeatedly explain a project or need to a
different rep. It also empowers them to work
through exceptions, giving them the freedom
to resolve issues, rather than adhering to rote
policies and strict hierarchies. This approach
builds trust among its customers and
consistently wins Build.com high marks for
service among its customers. It also makes for
a healthy work environment among agents
who are commended for self-reliance, and for
supervisors who can actually supervise rather
than micro-manage.
CHALLENGE
Build.com fields approximately 200,000
calls each month, including 120,000 from
new customers, and needed to ensure
each contact is handled promptly and
ends with each customer being delighted.
SOLUTIONInova Performance Tracker web-based
dashboards displayed on six large HD
monitors keeps all employees – not
just customer service reps – informed,
enabling swift response to customer
demand. Inova Performance Tracker gives
customized and comprehensive views of
contact center operations not available
from out-of-the-box Cisco dashboards.
BENEFITS• Affords self-management to agents
to deliver superior service.
• Involves the entire company to “own”
customer service responsibilities.
• Enables more effective leadership
through informed decision making.
• Supports Build.com’s culture of
superior customer service.

Better Immunization Management for Patient Safety“We decided to implement a set of standards that is widely used by industry – here in the U.S. as well as around the world.”
— WARREN WILLIAMS, Team Lead, Immunization Information Systems Support Branch, CDC
CHALLENGE
Millions of vaccines are given each year by hundreds of thousands of healthcare
providers (clinicians) across the U.S. To promote patient safety, the National
Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 requires that providers record specific
information about the administered vaccine and Vaccine Information Statement
(VIS) in patient medical records. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) wanted to help providers improve efficiencies and accuracy when recording
critical vaccine and VIS information.
SOLUTION
The CDC launched two projects using GS1 Standards to automate vaccine and VIS
information management processes. One pilot is testing how vaccine data – the
GS1 Global Trade Item Number® (GTIN®), lot number and expiration date encoded
in a GS1 DataMatrix barcode – can be scanned on vaccine vials and syringes for
populating electronic medical records (EMRs). The CDC is now adding a GS1
DataMatrix barcode encoded with the GS1 Global Document Type Identifier (GDTI)
to each new VIS so that providers can automatically capture and record VIS
document type and edition date into EMRs. BENEFITS
With the new automated processes, the CDC expects that providers will save time
and gain efficiencies in immunization management. Also, providers can reduce the
risk of errors by scanning barcodes versus manually transcribing vaccine and VIS
information. This improved accuracy means improved safety for patients.

2014 REPORT TO CONGRESS OF THE U.S.-CHINA ECONOMIC AND SECURITY REVIEW COMMISSION

staff approximation of maritime claims. Names and boundary representation are not
authoritative. The EEZ approximations shown are derived from the straight baseline
claims of China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, none of which is recognized by the
United States. Japan’s EEZ claim also includes an additional region in its outer islands
further east, not shown here.
In Northeast Asia, China seeks to thwart the potential for a trilateral
U.S.-Japan-South Korea alliance. Published Chinese views on China-
Japan security relations encompass a mix of suspicion, alarm, and
concern—especially on the issues of Japan’s increasingly robust
defense and security establishment, the development of the U.S.-
Japan alliance, and perceived lack of Japanese atonement over its
wartime past. Conversely, official Chinese views on China’s relations
with South Korea reflect an interest in continued cooperation
between Beijing and Seoul on regional security.
Whereas Japan is balancing against China by boosting its own
capabilities and reaffirming its alliance with the United States, South
Korea appears to be pursuing a hedging strategy by cultivating its
security relationships not only with the United States but with China
as well. The challenge for Washington as it seeks to modernize its
Northeast Asian alliances will be to balance differing sets of security
perceptions and priorities in Tokyo and Seoul as well as manage
simmering political tensions stemming from their troubled past.

claim the Spratly Islands independently of their maritime claims.
Southeast Asia and Oceania generally share the same wary view
of the unfolding U.S.-China competition for regional power and
influence. China’s central objectives with regard to Southeast Asia
are to defend its sovereignty claims and preserve its territorial
integrity; to secure and ensure access to resources for continued
economic development; and to maintain a secure buffer zone around
the Chinese mainland. With Australia, China seeks to maintain
strong trade ties while pursuing stronger security relations to at least
partially counterbalance the formal and robust U.S.-Australia alliance.
Southeast Asian states and Australia are hedging against what they
perceive to be strategic uncertainty in the region by building new
security relationships, strengthening existing security relationships,
diversifying and strengthening military and paramilitary capabilities,
and emphasizing the role of regional institutions and international
law to manage disputes. As the United States continues to
rebalance to Asia, achieving its security goals in the region will
require reassurance and reinforcement of its alliances and security
associates in addition to continued strong engagement with regional
political and security institutions.
CONCLUSIONS:
▶ Beijing has concluded the U.S.-led East Asia security architecture
does not benefit its core interests of regime preservation,
economic and social development, and territorial integrity. In 2014,
China’s leaders began to promote a vision of regional security that
marginalizes the United States and “relies on the people in Asia
to run Asia’s affairs, deal with Asia’s problems, and uphold Asia’s
security”—a vision at odds with the present security architecture
encompassing a strong network of U.S. alliances and partnerships
in East Asia.

Previous Studies and Associated Management goals
In order to avoid the most severe effects of climate change over the long-term, greenhouse gas emissions must
be reduced. Continued delay in mitigating climate change not only makes reducing emissions more costly and
disruptive, it also increases the need to plan and implement measures to limit the adverse impacts of climate
change. These measures, or adaptation strategies, can take many forms, such as updating infrastructure to
accommodate larger, more severe storms; restoring forests and wetlands to improve ecosystem resiliency;
and modifying agricultural practices to take advantage of warmer temperatures and changing precipitation
patterns. The primary goal of this plan is to develop climate change adaptation strategies for the watershed that
increase the resilience of the river, and the resources that are connected to it, in light of the changing physical,
environmental and social conditions described in the previous section.
The Taunton River Watershed has been the focus of a variety of reports and planning documents in the last
20 years, many of which serve as a valuable source of baseline information for this plan. These resources also
identify a number of management goals that support the primary goal of this plan. Below is a brief summary
of the most recent planning efforts for the watershed, along with a list of supporting management goals, as
identified within each document and applicable to the primary goal of this plan.

The Collaborative is proud to be advancing one of the first community-driven municipal policy initiatives to
address cumulative environmental impacts in the nation. We urge the City of Los Angeles to embrace these
innovative policy recommendations and partner with established local community-based organizations,
economic development organizations, public health agencies, academic researchers and private funders to
make measurable, tangible and positive changes in our most vulnerable communities. The City of Los Angeles has a proven track record of policy innovation and the power to demonstrate the
bold leadership required to make groundbreaking advances in environmental health. The City has already
implemented a number of these approaches and policy interventions to address significant social and
environmental issues: mapping medical marijuana outlets in relation to schools and other sensitive uses,
establishing special districts for historic preservation, and requiring new liquor stores to go through a
rigorous permitting process. Surely the City of Los Angeles can find a way to creatively apply these traditional
planning tools to the overconcentration of industrial land uses that pose significant environmental hazards to
human health and safety, not just in overburdened communities, but the region as a whole. The Collaborative urges Los Angeles’ leaders to heed this call to action and take affirmative steps to
transform overburdened neighborhoods into healthy, vibrant communities with strong local businesses and
green jobs that will pave the way toward a sustainable future.
The Collaborative is proud to be advancing one of the first community-driven municipal policy initiatives to address cumulative environmental impacts in the nation.

THE MARKETER’S OPPORTUNITY: ADVANCING PERSONALIZATION WITH MOBILE INSIGHTS
Today’s marketers have come a long way to better understand and connect with their consumers.
Increasingly, marketers are delivering more relevant content to consumers, using their own sophisticated
CRM systems and multi-channel marketing operations. The idea of tailoring content to deliver more
personalized consumer experiences is not new.Yet, the dilemma for marketers continues to center on gaining greater clarity about their consumers. With expanded, more precise awareness of “who their consumers really are,” marketers can create highly targeted segments and highly relevant content to improve their personalization strategies.Consider how advancing personalization impacts both a consumer and retailer. When Sally searches for a dress on the retailer’s website, she receives an email the next day, reminding
her to “not miss out” on getting the dress. She gets email alerts when the dress is discounted or for other
offers that may motivate her to purchase. So the retailer understands Sally – her basic demographic
profile and shopping behaviors – within the context of its in-store and e-commerce environments. However, the retailer cannot completely understand Sally since many of her activities and behaviors occur
outside of its span of visibility. For example, Sally is currently researching Disney World as a family vacation destination. During breaks
at work, she browses various travel websites and downloads the Disney app on her smartphone. While
walking through the mall, she scans the QR code on a Disney World poster to learn about seasonal
discounts. Sally is also researching new cars online and visits dealerships on weekends. And lately, Sally has
developed a keen interest in cooking healthier meals for her family, visiting organic food stores and
browsing popular cooking websites. If the retailer understood Sally’s interests in her “mobile life,” would it show her its vacation clothes
collection? Would it make her aware of its car financing division? Would she receive special offers on food
processors and other specialty cookware? Of course the answers are “yes” since the retailer could then make its relationship with Sally more inclusive
and meaningful.
Advancing personalization via specialized segmentation is possible only when consumers “opt in” or consent to share their mobile insights with a specific brand.
