Director’s Message by Malcolm McIntyre

Hard to believe it's December already, but we're not done with 2018 yet. I hope to see everyone on the 9th at Perkins for our annual holiday gathering. Now that 2019 will soon be upon us, it's time to start planning for it. Bob & Rachel Vukas have gra-ciously opened up his home to the club again for our annual plan-ning meeting, Jan 12th at 1:00 PM. If you aren't familiar with this process we gather in January and plan as much of the season's monthly tours that we can. So bring your ideas because you're all our best tour leaders. The informational flyer for the 2019 National Tour has been released and a copy (sort of) is here in the Startera-tor. Hopefully we can have another good turnout so hold the dates of Sept 3-10 2019.

Happy Motoring! – Malcolm

*By December 1968, the new 1969 cars would have been in production for several months. That meant getting a 1968 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon like the one above, might be a bargain. An all-new wagon appeared in 1969, and with it, the crisp angular lines of the 1965 to 1968 versions were gone. The wagon above was list priced at $4,418 with standard 290-horsepower, 383 CID V8 engine. A 3-seat version was priced at $4,523. This was the last

year the Town & Country was part of the Newport line. After 1969 it was its own model. From 1962 to 1966, it came as a Newport or New Yorker.

Christmas in Stuttgart, Germany

Malcolm forwarded the below photos from, “ A German friend of mine that works for Mercedes sent me these that are in the city square of Stuttgart”

Lawrence Antique Motorcycle Show - March 2018 - Douglas County Fairgrounds - Lawrence, KS

Many months ago, Steve Hartwich sent me this batch of motorcycle photos that he shot at the Lawrence Antique motor-cycle show. They were to be used as a filler. Well, this is a space I needed to fill so here they are. These are a group of highly restored vintage machines from an earlier time. Outstanding examples. Thanks Steve!

Editor Note: Your newsletter is in need of articles to share with members. If you have attended a car event; photos of something interesting; technical tip that you used to repair one of your collector cars; or just something that interest you or your family. I can scan photos or articles and return them to you. Please, “The Starterator” is your publication so help your editor fill the pages with something other than photos of his cars! Thank You to all that provided content this past year. You make my job easy!

Cold but Moderate Winter

The forecast for winter is for a cold but moderate winter. Last week felt like neither. The shopping we did on Monday left us stuck in ice ruts in front of Roach’s Hardware. Spinning your tires in parking lots and intersections only creates skating rinks. Even with Rachel’s Michelin Defenders it was necessary to rock back and forth to move the car but it finally did. We proved to our-selves that studs, chains or dedicated winter tires may be the key if you live in colder more northern states. Otherwise no regular

tire is great on ice.

The Recipe for Winter Driving Success:

1. Air up your tires, at least monthly to the proper pressure.

2. Check your anti-freeze, remember 2 years or 24,000 miles,

unless you have a specialty car that goes to 100,000.

3. Check all fluid levels.

4. Keep the gas tank at least ½ full at all times and add a bottle

of Iso-Heet once a month. Keep a bottle in the car for emergen-

cies.

5. Keep your headlights, turn signal lights and tail lights

clean, as well as all glass surfaces, including the mirrors.

6. Use silicone spray on the locks, hood release and trunk re-

lease. Shoot the hinges too.

7. Apply Aquapel or Rain-X to your glass surfaces. Use old

fashioned Bon Ami to clean your inside windows too keep them

from fogging up.

8. Keep your car garaged or install an engine heater.

9. Buy the best tires you can afford and that are highly recom-

mended.

Keep a winter safety kit in your car, shovel, warm clothes, boots,

gloves and hats.

The ’57 still sits waiting for a proper carburetor rebuild.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated as to a carburetor

mechanic.

Hercules - Campbell Body Company

Hercules-Campbell Body Company was formed in 1927 and based in Tarrytown, New York. By 1932 they began build-ing after-market station wagon bodies, largely for Ford. Throughout the thirties they expanded to buses and large com-mercial vehicle bodies, such as tanker trucks. General Motors first contracted with Hercules-Campbell company to build their factory production station wagon bodies for the 1939 season for Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. By the time the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, Campbell Body was re-tooling for the 1942 Chevrolet Station Wagons. But the war changed that plan and their first war-time order was from General Motors for 200 station wagons for the war effort. Two and four-door Chevy sedans were shipped from their Tarrytown assembly plant to a newer Campbell plant in Waterloo, NY, where wooden 8-passenger station wagon bodies replaced the steel car bodies. Wagons became the vehicle of choice for civil defense vehicles at home, and by May 1943, Campbell was building wood station wagon bod-ies on 1940-1942 Ford, Mercury, Plymouth and Chevrolet cars, 1941-1942 Pontiac and Studebaker cars and 1942 Dodge and DeSoto cars. The station wagon bodies sold for $450 each. A 14-passenger body on trucks with a 30” chassis stretch was $1,000. Below is shown the 1942 Plymouth model in 8-passenger form, advertised as the Victory model, Campbell war wagon. Inset at lower right is a 14-passenger wagon built on a 3/4-ton Dodge truck chassis.

75 years ago Along the Action Era Highways

This ad is from the October 1943

issue of “Motor Magazine”, a

monthly Hearst publication for auto-

motive dealerships, service centers,

marketers, distributorships, etc.

Submitted by Kelly Flory.

TEXACO Texaco was building its business during the war by helping car owners keep their cars running properly through regular maintenance. As this ad states, smoke can indi-cate engine wear, caus-ing higher gas usage.

No one wanted that with gas rationing in place

since May 15, 1942 on the east coast, and na-

tionwide since December 1942.

“A” stickers were the most

common and were is-sued to the general pub-lic entitling the holder to

4 gallons of gas per week. “B” stickers were issued primarily to busi-ness owners and was worth eight gallons a

week. A “C” sticker was issued to professional

people including doctors, farm workers, mail deliv-ery and 14 other select-ed occupations. Other stickers included “M” for

Motorcycles used for delivery, “T” for truck

drivers and “X” for spe-cial circumstances.
