Interested In makIng an ImpressIon on the health care Industry and furtherIng your career at the same tIme? At the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University you can earn a business degree with a comprehensive understanding of the health care industry.

Health Care: Theory Meets PracticeA Rice MBA ALP team of five — two of whom were MBA/MD candidates and a third who was an MD — was commissioned by their host organization to explore the feasibility of establishing a Pumps and Pipes incubator company. While Houston provides great potential for cross-industry collaboration between the medical and energy technologies, currently there is no formal incubator process to capitalize on the two industry resources. Several key areas of interest, including robotics, imaging, and nanotechnology have not been tapped for commercial development.

After analyzing current competitors, investigating and examining ideas that could be incubated, and exploring funding sources, the team presented their findings. The health care organization received a deeper understanding of the other types of collaborations that have occurred and the potential for serving unmet needs among Houston entrepreneurs, thereby applying principles of business and medicine to entrepreneurship.

During my summer internship at Methodist Hospital I learned about hospital operations, hospital finances and budgeting, health care reform and the complexities of the American health care system. My specific project was to create and present a strategic plan for the Women’s Health department. It was a great experience. Annie Bradbury Rice MBA Class of 2011

Leveraging its relationships with and proximity to the Texas Medical Center — the world’s largest — the Jones School provides students with faculty expertise in both business and medicine; high quality peers from industries across the spectrum, including health care; and experiential learning that can be immediately applied at work.

The school offers three health care options for individuals interested in pursuing a solid foundation in business education: the Full-Time MBA Health Care Concentration, the Fully-Employed MBA Programs – Health Care Specialization Track, and the Joint MBA/MD in conjunction with Baylor College of Medicine.

Experiential Learning with Prominent Health Care OrganizationsThe Jones Graduate School of Business requires every full-time student to participate in an Action Learning Project (ALP), a ten-week consultation with a team of Rice MBAs matched to a dynamic host company. In the past, students have worked hands-on with local health care organizations, including: AAMA, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Baylor College of Medicine, Bering Omega, Healthcare for Homeless, Ibn Sina, Passport for Care, St. Luke’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and The Methodist Hospital.

Possessing the advanced business skills from my MBA provides me with a holistic view of a health care system and the varying complexities involved on economic, logistical and cultural fronts in countries around the world. Full-Time MBA Health Care ConcentrationThe concentration in health care prepares full-time students by providing them with a general business background in health care and also a deep understanding of key topics driving the industry. Students learn management principles and apply them in varied health care settings, such as pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and large and small practices.

Fully-Employed MBA Programs Health Care Specialization TrackA health care specialization track is offered to Rice MBA for Executives and Rice MBA for Professionals as an enhancement to their degree. This health care track is aimed at health care professionals working full time who are seeking to advance themselves in the industry.

The health care courses are offered year round and supplement regular electives.

Joint MBA/MDThe Jones School and Baylor College of Medicine offer a five-year combined MBA/MD program to respond to the growing need for physicians with state-of-the-art medical and business skills. By completing their MBA before they enter residency, students in the MBA/MD program learn how companies operate and are able to apply that knowledge.

And what opportunities and challenges does globalization create for health care firms?

Rice’s MBA/MD is a well-respected program with lots of biotech connections and an engaging classroom environment. I’m interested in multidisciplinary health care teams. This program will help me to be a better doctor – developing and monitoring quality and patient safety metrics and programs. One day I hope to be dean of a medical school. Andrew Wilson MBA/MD 2011

My desire to step into administration in the hospital setting or to work for a medical device company as a medical director inspired me to get my MBA at Rice.
