What was it like…?

Entertainment was an important part of society in the 1920’s and new forms of it were becoming increasingly popular. The 1920’s was the decade of the large urban theaters that could seat 1-2000 guests at a time. Films helped people forget about the harsh times of the war.

Louis Armstrong

In the 1920s, Armstrong performed with a number of different musical groups, and began to revolutionize the jazz world with his introduction of the extended solo. Prior to his arrival, jazz music was played either in highly orchestrated arrangements or in a more loosely structured “Dixieland”-type ensemble in which no one musician soloed for any extended period.

Dance Clubs

Dance clubs and contests became very popular in the 1920s. Classical pieces, operettas, and folk music were all transformed into popular dance melodies in order to satisfy the public craze for dancing.

Charlie Chaplin

By the early 1920s, Chaplin was making his own films with actors Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks due to the establishment of Chaplin Studios and United Artists in 1919. Having control of his own films lead to classics such as 'The Kid', 'The Gold Rush', 'City Lights', 'Modern Times' and 'The Great Dictator'. These films made him the most popular and successful film star of his time.
