Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Ashley River Road / Sam Rittenberg Improvements Project On Wednesday, March 21, Charleston County Government held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of the Sam Rittenberg (SC-7) and Ashley River Road (SC-61) Intersection Improvements project. The goal of the project is to improve safety and provide relief from traffic congestion at the intersection. The improvements extend along SC-61 from Wallace School Road to Wappoo Road and along SC-7 from Gardner Road to Wappoo Road. “Over the last few years, we have seen an incredible amount of growth in this area, which has led to an increase in traffic concerns. This traffic project and revitalization efforts will not only help alleviate congestion, but will make West Ashley a great place to live for years to come,” said Charleston County Councilman Brantley Moody. Several county and city elected officials attended the event held at the St. Andrews Public Service District Fire Station. The project was funded through the half cent sales tax. “We are very excited about the improvements to this busy intersection. This project is another excellent example of taxpayer dollars being put to good use,” said Charleston County Council Chairman Vic Rawl.

Construction of an additional left turn lane on the northbound SC-61 approach (coming from Wappoo Road toward Sam

Rittenberg Boulevard).

Construction of an additional left turn lane on the southbound SC-61 approach (coming from Wallace School Road toward

Sam Rittenberg Boulevard).

Extension of the southbound right turn lane on SC-7 (coming from Wappoo Road toward SC-61).

Widening of lanes to provide 11-foot thru lanes and 14-foot outside, shared-use lanes on SC-61 within the project limits.

Traffic signal timing improvements to the intersections within the project limits.

Decorative traffic lights and crosswalks.

“I would like to thank everyone who worked diligently on making this project a reality. The new turn lanes and traffic light signal timing will ease traffic during peak travel times, making for a more convenient commute, and improving the quality of lives for our citizens,” said Charleston County Councilmember Teddie Pryor.

Zoning and Planning Hosts Public Workshops for Ten-Year

Comprehensive Plan Update

Last week the Charleston County Zoning and Planning department held three of seven public workshops to gather public input on

the ten-year update for the county’s comprehensive plan. “Public participation in the comprehensive planning process is critical

to ensure county growth is consistent with the community’s vision. Public input also helps guide the provision of county services

and impacts future policy decisions that improve the general welfare of all citizens and visitors to Charleston County,” said

Planning Director Joel Evans. Citizens can view and submit comments and suggestions on the county’s website at

Summer Youth Applications Now Open

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) provides Charleston County youth between the ages of 16 and 21 with

paid summer employment for six weeks beginning June 22, 2018 through August 2, 2018.

Application period will end Friday April 13 or once 125 applications have been received.

Youth Eligibility:

Ages 16 to 21

Resident of Charleston County

Currently enrolled in high school or college

The Summer Youth Program (SYEP) is designed to provide:

Work experience

Work readiness skills

Positive work attitudes

Suspect Sentenced for Making Obscene Calls to Law Enforcement Approximately a year and a half ago, the Charleston County 9-1-1 Consolidated Dispatch Center received an unsettling call on an administrative line. The caller told the call taker he was holding a woman hostage at an undisclosed location. The staff work-ing that day reached out to Law Enforcement and the FBI was contacted to work on the case. The caller was a man in California who used VoIP and spoofing to create “burner” numbers so his number would be concealed when he made obscene or harassing phone calls to law enforcement across the country. Earlier this month he was sentenced to two years in prison.

“Even though it seemed like there was no way to track down this individual and possible hostage at the time of the call, you all did your jobs to the best of your ability. In the end, you helped ensure public safety. You made a difference,” said Allyson Burrell, deputy director, Charleston County 9-1-1 Consolidated Dispatch Center.

According to the Northern District of California’s US Attorney’s Office, the suspect admitted he knew his actions would result in a substantial disruption of public, governmental, and business functions.
