About This Ride

This ride through a wonderful unspoiltarea takes in both, contrasting sides ofthe Ribble Valley and passes throughseveral attractive and tranquil villagesas well as a number of sites ofhistorical interest. Riding is generally onthe flat, with a few short climbs.

This route is described from a startpoint at Waddington, however youcould equally well start from any otherpoint along the route such asDownham, Chatburn,Whalley orRibchester. Alternatively you couldstart from the railway station atClitheroe.

Clitheroe railway station is at the heartof this route, and is easily accessiblefrom Manchester, Preston andBlackburn.

Route Description

GPS: SD 7356 3676On leaving Whalley turn right, signpostedto Oakhill College,Wiswell and Pendleton,still following NCN 91.

GPS: SD 7403 3703Cross the A671 with care and continueinto Wiswell and Pendleton. Follow theNCN 91 signs as you drop down to theA59 from Pendleton Hall.

GPS: SD 7546 4086Cross the A59 with great care, and turnright after 25m onto a very quiet lane thateventually leads you back to re-cross theA59 and onto a cycle path into Worstonvillage.

GPS: SD 7669 4267Turn right (signposted to Downham) alonga designated Quiet Lane. In Downham,stop a while to enjoy this picturesquevillage with its pub and tea shop. Leave thevillage in the direction of Chatburn.

GPS: SD 7694 4413Turn left at the T junction next toHudsons Ice Cream, and then right afterthe Post Office for Grindleton.

GPS: SD 7595 4515Turn left and follow the road back toWaddington.

Start GPS: SD 7291 4386Starting at Waddington car park, take theroad straight ahead, passing immediatelyout into open country. Here you are on asection of the Lancashire Cycleway. Followthe blue signs for the next 6km (3.7 miles)until Great Mitton.

GPS: SD 7115 4208Possible stop off point at Bashall Barn -shop, café and brewery!

GPS: SD 7020 4140Turn left at the T-junction

GPS: SD 7124 3957Follow the main road at the next T-junction turn right, or detour left to Mittonvillage to see the 13th Century AllHallows church, parish church of theShireburn family of Stonyhurst, or to visitthe Three Fishes pub and Mitton HallHotel. Continue to follow the main roadthrough Hurst Green.

GPS: SD 6448 3817At the Halls Arms crossroads turn left.

GPS: SD 6508 3540In the centre of Ribchester turn left,although you may want to explore thevillage and visit the Roman museum.

GPS: SD 6628 3561After leaving the village go over the bridgeto cross the river Ribble, then turnimmediately left, and follow anothersection of the Lancashire Cyclewaythrough Dinkley, Old Langho and Billingtonto Whalley (follow the blue signs)

Other Information

Downham - well known as a backropto a few film and TV series, home toLord Clitheroe and a largely unspoiltestate village.

Ribchester Roman museum - built onthe site of the Roman fort andsettlement BremetenacumVeteranorum, this is the Lancashire'sonly Roman museum, open all yearround.

Stonyhurst College - this famous Jesuitpublic school was founded in 1794, thegrade 1 listed building is reputed to beone of the largest buildings under oneroof in Europe. Set in 400 acres ofbeautiful country estate, the College isopen during the summer holidays andhosts the annual Food Lovers Festivalin the summer.
