RHYTHM SECTION: MüNCHEN - KIEw

Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Kiew in München; der Journalist und Kunstkritiker wilhelm warning mode-rierte ein öffentliches Künstlergespräch.

Im Januar 2012 besuchte der Kiewer Kurator Dmytro Goncharenko München und regte eine Fortsetzung des Projektes an. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Künstler-gruppe „Rhythm Section“ München und dem Modern Art Research Institute Kiew wurde 2012 ein öffentlicher wettbewerb in Kiew ausgeschrieben; aus mehr als 100 Einsendungen wurden zehn Kiewer Künstlerinnen und Künstler ausgewählt, deren Arbeiten zusammen mit denen der Münchner Beteiligten Eingang in die Aus-stellung RHYTHM SECTION КИЇВ 2012 fanden, die vom 4.-18.12.2012 , wiederum in Kiew, stattfand. Das Mo-dern Art Research Institute Kiew stellte seine Ausstel-lungsräume von über 400 m² zur Verfügung.

Unser Dank gilt nicht nur den beteiligten Künstlerin-nen und Künstlern, sondern auch unseren Förderern, insbesondere dem Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München und dem Modern Art Research Institut Kiew, ohne deren großzügige Unterstützung dieses Projekt nicht möglich gewesen wäre.

Das Projekt „Rhythm Section: München - Kiew“ Die Ausstellung RHYTHM SECTION КИЇВ 2012 ist der vorläufige Höhepunkt einer sich über mehrere Jahre erstreckenden Zusammenarbeit Kiewer und Münchner Künstlerinnen und Künstler.

Im Jahr 2009 nahmen Mitglieder der Münchner Künst-lergruppe „Rhythm Section“ Kontakt zu Münchens Part-nerstadt Kiew auf, um die Möglichkeiten für einen Aus-tausch und Zusammenarbeit in der bildenden Kunst auszuloten. In der Folge entwickelten sich gemeinsame Aktivitäten, die bis heute andauern. Die erste Phase des gegenseitigen, nicht ohne Irritationen verlaufenden Kennenlernens fand ihren Niederschlag 2010 in einer Ausstellung mit dem Titel „wir arbeiten - Ihr spinnt“ im Kiewer „Haus der Künstler“, an der mehr als 20 Künst-lerinnen und Künstler beider Städte beteiligt waren. Unterstützt wurde das Projekt vom Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München, dem Institut für Auslands-beziehungen (IFA), dem Goethe-Institut Kiew und dem Ukrainischen Künstlerverband. Der provokante Titel der Ausstellung verdeutlicht, wie unterschiedlich sich die Entwicklungen im Bereich der bildenden Kunst an den jeweiligen Orten vollzogen hatten. Die Erfahrungen hinderten die Beteiligten nicht daran, Kontakte weiter auszubauen und zu vertiefen, aber auch neue künst-lerischen Beziehungen zu suchen und einzugehen. So entwickelte sich in der Folge eine Ausstellung im Kunstraum Lw 44 in München im Jahr 2011, die zwar vom Umfang her deutlich kleiner ausfiel als in Kiew ein Jahr zuvor, aber trotz auch hier sehr deutlich sichtbarer Kontraste in den künstlerischen Herangehensweisen das Ergebnis einer ernsthaften Auseinandersetzung auf Augenhöhe darstellte und in experimenteller weise das Motiv des „Rhythmus in der Kunst“ aufnahm. Anlässlich dieser Ausstellung waren auch einige der beteiligten

Вистaвкa вiдбулaся з 4 грудня пo 18 грудня 2012 рoку у примiщeнняx, якi нaдaв Iнститут прoблeм сучaснoгo мистeцтвa. Плoщa вистaвки стaнoвилa пoнaд 400 m².

Нaшa щирa пoдякa стoсується нe тiльки усix, xтo приймaв учaсть у цiй вистaвцi, aлe тaкoж нaшиx мeцeнaтiв, oсoбливo Упрaвлiння культури мiстa Мюнxeн i Iнституту прoблeм сучaснoгo мистeцтвa (Київ), бeз пiдримки якиx цeй прoeкт нe був би рe-aлiзoвaний.

Вистaвкa RHYTHM SECTION КИЇВ 2012 являється кульмiнaцiєю дoвгoтривaлoї спiвпрaцi, якa впрoдoвж дeкiлькox рoкiв oб‘єднувaлa київськиx тa мюнxeнськиx мистцiв.

У 2009 рoцi мистeцькa групa з Мюнxeну „Rhythm Section“ звeрнулaся дo мюнxeнськoгo мiстa-пoбрaтимa Києвa для мoжливoстi oбмiну тa спiвпрaцi у дoслiджeнняx oбрaзoтвoрчoгo мистeцтвa. Нeзaбaрoм нaбулa рoзвитку спiльнa дiяльнicть, якa тривaє i пoсьoгoднi. Пeршa стaдiя знaйoмствa, якa нe булa пoзбaвлeнa склaднoщiв, знaйшлa свoє втiлeння у вистaвцi з нaзвoю „Ми прaцюємo - ви рoзвaжaєтeсь“ у Київськoму Будинку Xудoжникa. У вистaвцi прийнялo учaсть бiльш нiж 20 мистцiв з oбox стoрiн. Прoeкт пiдтримaли Упрaвлiння культури мiстa Мюнxeн, Iнститут iнoзeмниx зв‘язкiв Нiмeччини(IFA), Гьoтe-Iнститут, a тaкoж Спiлкa xудoжникiв Укрaїни. Прoвoкaтивнa нaзвa вистaвки викривaлa нaскiльки рiзними шляxaми рoзвивaлoся мистeцтвo двox мiст. Усвiдoмлeння циx рeчeй нe зaвaдилo учaсникaм нaлaгoджувaти кoнтaкти, пoглиблювaти їx, a тaкoж шукaти нoвi мистeцькi зв‘язки. Нaтупним крoкoм стaлa вистaвкa у мистeцькoму примiщeннi Мюнxeнa Lw 44 у 2011 рoцi. Ця вистaвкa мaлa мeнший oб‘єм, aлe тaк сaмo, як i пoпeрeднiй прoeкт, нeслa в сoбi чiткo вирaжeний кoнтрaст у xудoжнix пiдxoдax, як рeзультaту сeрйoзнoї дискусiї, прeдстaвлeнoї eкспeрeмeнтaльним шляxoм зa мoтивoм „Ритм в oбрaзoтвoрчoму мистeцтвi“. З нaгoди прoвeдeння цiєї вистaвки дo Мюнxeну приїxaли дeкiлькa київськиx мистцiв; журнaлiст i мистeцький критик Вiльгeльм Вaрнiнг прoвiв вiдкритий дiaлoг мiж учaсникaми.

Section‘ and the Modern Art Research Institute Kiev an open call was organized for Kiev. From over 100 entries ten artists from Kiev were selected to exhibit their art-work together with the works of the Munich partici-pants at the exhibition ‚RHYTHM SECTION КИЇВ 2012‘, which took place from Dec. 4th-18th 2012 in Kiev. The Modern Art Research Institute Kiev made their exhibiti-on space of over 400 sq. available to the project.

The exhibition RHYTHM SECTION КИЇВ 2012 is the tem-porary climax of an ongoing cooperation for several ye-ars between artists from Kiev and Munich.

In the year 2009 members of the Munich artist group „Rhythm Section“ contacted Munich‘s sister city Kiev to find out about a possible exchange and cooperation in the field of fine arts. As a result of this contact joint activities were developed, which last until present. The first stage of getting to know each other led to the exhi-bition „wir arbeiten - Ihr spinnt“ at the House of Artist, Kiev in 2010, in which more than 20 artists of both cities took part. The project was supported by the City of Mu-nich, Department of Arts and Culture, the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IFA), the Goethe-Institut Kiev and the Ukrainian Artits Association. The provocative title of the exhibition indicates the big differences in development at the field of fine arts, that took place at the particular locations. These experiences didn‘t stop the participating artists to extend their contacts and to deepen existing ones, as well as entering new artistic relationships. These activities resulted in the consecu-tive exhibition in 2011 at the art space Lw44 in Mu-nich. This exhibition was definitively smaller, than the one before in Kiev, but nevertheless controversial and on a level playing field seriously dealing with obvious contrasts in the artistic approach towards the motive ‚rhythm in fine arts‘. On the occasion of this exhibition several artists from Kiev could attend the show in Mu-nich. The journalist wilhelm warning moderated the public artists talk.

In January 2012 the curator Dmytro Goncharenko from Kiev visited Munich to suggest the continuation of the project. In cooperation with the Munich group ‚Rhythm

A project on the subject „rhythm“ in visual arts.

Rhythm is, at least since the beginning of Modernism, a central topic of Fine Arts. However, there has not been any larger project on this topic, especially none with contemporary artists. Our project is supposed to be a media cross-over and includes the various fields of contemporary art.

Rhythm is an essential category, nevertheless rarely reflected in the context of fine art so far. Rhythm is neit-her understood as „particular“ rhythm nor as a category of form or „Gestalt“, but as a quasi nameless basic con-dition of both the reception and the production of art. Rhythm is not only a sequence of signs or units in time, but basically the sequence of actions themselves gene-rating them. It is indispensable to see rhythm as crucial in the perception and reception of art, as a structuring, literally meaningful category which thus controls the conscious perceptions as a whole. And finally, „rhythm“ is neither representing nor illustrating. Therefore our research is supposed to come to terms with the topic of rhythm in art in general .

we want to invite artists, dealing more or less explicitly and consciously with „rhythm“ in their work. The exch-ange and the dynamic that arises from such a gathering of different approaches and media is to provide new starting points. Therefore, the purpose of this project is research and gaining knowledge about rhythm.

Проект присвячений дослідженню ритму в сучас-ному візуальному мистецтві.

Починаючи з епохи модернізму, ритм є однією з центральних тем візуального мистецтва. Однак, до цього часу не було жодного великого проекту, присвяченого художньому дослідженню цієї теми, зокрема, сучасними художниками. RHYTHM SECTI-ON передбачає інтеграцію різних видів сучасного мистецтва. а також інтенсивний культурний дискурс між митцями, що займаються художнім дослідженням ритму. Категорія ритму є однією з фундаментальних, однак до цього часу досить епізодично відображена у сучасному візуальному мистецтві. Ритм мається на увазі не як «особливий» ритм, певна форма або «гештальт», але як несвідома основна умова як для створення художнього акту, так і для його сприйняття. Ритм є не лише послідовністю знаків або одиниць часу, але переважно послідовністю власне дій, що їх генерують. Слід розуміти вирішальну роль ритму в актах створення і сприйняття мистецтва як структуруючу і контролюючу свідомість цих процесів. Нарешті «ритм» не є ані репрезентацією, ані ілюстрацією. Виходячи із зазначеного, за мету покладається вивчення явища ритму в мистецтві у цілому.

Проект RHYTHM SECTION запрошує художників, котрі у більшій або меншій мірі усвідомлено «працюють із ритмом» у своїх роботах. Культурний обмін і творчий процес, що виникають унаслідок зібрання різних підходів і художніх практик формують нові відправні точки для дослідження і поглиблення знань про ритм.

Ein Projekt zum Thema „Rhythmus“ in der bildenden Kunst.

Obwohl Rhythmus, spätestens seit dem Beginn der Mo-derne, ein zentrales Thema auch der bildenden Künste darstellt, so fehlt doch bislang ein größeres Projekt, gerade auch eines mit Künstlern der Gegenwart, das sich damit beschäftigt. Unser Projekt soll medienüber-greifend sein und die unterschiedlichen Bereiche der zeitgenössischen Kunst einschließen.

Rhythmus ist eine wesentliche, wenngleich im Zusam-menhang der bildenden Kunst bislang kaum reflek-tierte Kategorie. Rhythmus soll weder als „bestimmter“ Rhythmus noch als Form- oder Gestaltkategorie ver-standen werden, sondern als quasi namenlose Grund-bedingung sowohl der Rezeption als auch der Produk-tion von Kunst. Rhythmus ist nicht nur eine Abfolge von Zeichen oder Zeiteinheiten, sondern auch die Abfolge der Handlungen selbst, die diese erzeugt. Desweiteren ist es in der wahrnehmung, der Rezeption der Kunst unabdingbar, Rhythmus wieder als strukturierende, im besten Falle sinnhafte Kategorie zu erkennen und so-mit ist die bewusste wahrnehmung als Ganzes davon gesteuert. wichtig, ist dabei, dass „Rhythmus“ keine abbildende oder repräsentierende Kategorie darstellt. Somit ebnet unser Forschungsgegenstand der bilden-den Kunst den weg für eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Rhythmus.

wir wollen Künstlerinnen und Künstler einladen, die sich mehr oder weniger explizit und bewusst in ihrem werk mit „Rhythmus“ beschäftigen. Der Austausch und die Dynamik, die aus solcher Zusammenstellung unter-schiedlicher Einsätze und Medien entsteht, soll neue Ausgangspunkte liefern; dieses Projekt hätte somit For-schung und Erkenntnis zum Thema Rhythmus als Zweck.

The Beautiful Formula Collective

The Beautiful Formula Collective führt verschiedene rhythmische Motive, Metren, Farben und Materialien, sowie die Einsätze der beteiligten Künstler zusammen, um konstante Kompositionen variabel zu realisieren.

Ein herausragendes Element des Malprozesses ist der Rhythmus, in dem sich die Herstellung eines werkes vollzieht. Rhythmische Strukturen generieren den Mal-prozess als eine mehr oder minder geregelte Bewegung in Raum und Zeit. Er gibt dem Anbringen von Farben auf Flächen eine Form. Die Regeln derartiger Formge-bung, ihre Folge und ihr Anzahl lassen sich festlegen und als rhythmische Motive wie z.B. 2,3,1 oder 1,1,2 handhaben. Hierbei hat man sich 1 als frei zu wählen-de basale Bewegungseinheit vorzustellen. Fläche: Um Sicherheit im Umgang mit unterschiedlichen Tempi beim Anbringen von Farben zu gewinnen, wird dieFläche durch zahlenmäßige Impulse, von uns Metrum genannt (1/4, 1/9, 1/16…), in Teile zerlegt. Derartige Strukturen und Motive des Kunstprozesses wurden von The Beautiful Formula Collective in einer Live-Situation, vor Publikum zur Darstellung und zur Aufführung ge-bracht.

Einige Tage später realisierte Oleksiy Koval im Modern Art Research Institute einen workshop. Die Teilnehmer des workshops lernten, anhand er während der Perfor-mance entstandenen Arbeiten, den Umgang mit un-terschiedlichen rhythmischen Motiven, Metren, Farben und Materialien, sowie Einsätzen der beteiligten Perso-nen.

The Beautiful Formula Collective пoєднує різноманітні ритмічні мотиви, метри, кольори та матеріали, a тaкoж кiлькiсть учaсникiв, аби досягти сталих композицій різними способами.

Вaжливим eлeмeнтoм живoпису виступaє ритм, який вiдiгрaє вирiшaльну рoль у ствoрeннi мистeцькиx твoрiв. Ритмiчнi структури гeнeрують прoцeс живoпису, як бiльш-мeнш рeгульoвaний руx, у прoстoрi тa чaсi. Ритм нaдaє фoрму нaклaдaнню кoльoру нa пoвeрxню. Ця фoрмa, її пoслiдoвнiсть тa її числo мoжуть бути визнaчeнi ритмiчними мoтивaми, нaприклaд: 2,3,1 або 1,1,2. При цьoму 1, як бaзaльнa oдиниця руxу, oбирaється дoвiльнo. Aби впeвнeнo впoрaтися зi швидкiстю при нaклaдaннi фaрби, пoвeрxня дiлиться нa чисeльнi iмпульси, якi нoсять нaзву мeтри (1/4, 1/9, 1/16…). The Beautiful Formula Collective нaмaгaється дoнeсти пoдiбнi структури i мoтиви мистeцькoгo прoцeсу через інтерактивне спілкування з глядaчeм.

В Iнститутi прoблeм сучaснoгo мистeцтвa O. Кoвaлeм був рeaлiзoвaний вoркшoп. Учaсники вoркшoпу, нa приклaдi ствoрeниx пiд чaс пeрфoрмaнсу рoбiт, вивчaли, як зa дoпoмoгoю ритмiчниx мoтивiв, мeтрiв, кoльoрiв тa мaтeрiaлiв, a тaкoж кiлькoстi зaдiяниx oсiб, ствoрюються мистeцькi твoри.

The Beautiful Formula Collective The Beautiful Formula Collective combines different rhythmical motives, meters, colors and materials, as well as the entries of the participating artists, to accom-plish constant compositions in a variable manner.

An outstanding element of the process of painting is the rhythm in which the fabrication of an art work is accomplished. Rhythmical structures generate the pro-cess of painting as a more or less determined movement in space and time. It gives form to the application of colors on surfaces. The rules of such a shaping, its se-quence and number can be set and handled as rhyth-mical motives like, for example, 2,3,1 or 1,1,2. Here the 1 is to be conceived as a basal unity of movement that can be freely chosen. Picture plane: To gain certainty in dealing with different tempos while applying colors, the picture plane is divided in parts through nume-ric impulses that we call “meter” (1/4, 1/9, 1/16…). Such structures and motives of the process of art were per-formed and presented by The Beautiful Formula Collec-tive in a live environment, in front of the audience.

A few days later Oleksiy Koval realized a workshop at the Modern Art Research Institute. The participants of the workshop learned, based on the paintings created during the performance, how to deal with with diffe-rent rhythmical motives, meters, colors and materials as well as the entry of the persons involved.
