Smith was raised in Guilford County, raised her family here, and her children are now bringing up their families in Guilford County. She said she feels that the triad has an excellent quality of life, and because Smith feels so strongly about the area she has been very involved in the community over the years. She was elected to the old Guilford County Board of Education and served on it for eight years. She is currently a member of the Greensboro Planning Board. Active in the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA), Smith served as president in 2009 and is on the executive committee of Triad Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition (TREBIC). She has won numerous industry and Allen Tate awards for her work.

Betty’s son Jason Smith is also active in the GBA and served on the

Board of directors, chaired the 2008 Parade of Homes, chaired the public relations committee for two years, and is on the executive committee of the triad sales and marketing council.
