If you’re ready for an adventure and looking to find unique home furnishings and one-of-a-kind objects d’art, the place to visit is the High Point Antique, Art and Design Center – bursting with furniture and collectibles from all over the world. Owner John Aspley, who is originally from England, travels the globe to find interesting and unusual pieces to put in his showroom. Many of his pieces come from England and Indonesia. In one showroom there’s an English snooker table, deep leather couches and a large carved wooden bar that feels like an English pub. Another room holds what were once ornate opium beds. Now they are prized for their intricately carved wood designs and are finding popularity as intimate dining areas in many restaurants, since a small table for two often fits where a mattress once would have rested. Aspley began his career as an antique dealer in 1976, and because he had been a cabinetmaker, antique restoration came easily. He began by restoring antique pine furniture, mainly for the American market. When customers couldn’t find the pieces they were looking for, Aspley designed and built furniture using antique pieces and old components to make the large-scale furniture that was then popular. In the late 1980s, Aspley visited Indonesia to investigate the growing antique reproduction business in places like Japara and Semerang, and he saw an opportunity to use the leftover limbs and roots. Who doesn’t enjoy a treasure hunt? If you’re ready for an adventure and looking to find unique home furnishings and one-of-a-kind objects d’art, the place to visit is the High Point Antique, Art and Design Center – bursting with furniture and collectibles from all over the world.
Owner John Aspley, who is originally from England, travels the globe to find interesting and unusual pieces to put in his showroom. Many of his pieces come from England and Indonesia. In one showroom there’s an English snooker table, deep leather couches and a large carved wooden bar that feels like an English pub.
Another room holds what were once ornate opium beds. Now they are prized for their intricately carved wood designs and are finding popularity as intimate dining areas in many restaurants, since a small table for two often fits where a mattress once would have rested.
Aspley began his career as an antique dealer in 1976, and because he had been a cabinetmaker, antique restoration came easily.
