The following portfolio contains the contents of my work in Rhetoric 101 during the

Summer Session 2012 at the American university in Cairo, Egypt.

I’ve accomplished so many important aspects in this course. My Rhetoric 101

instructor was focusing on how you can keep moving with the pen without stopping.

The purpose of this technique is to brainstorm many ideas and try to extract an idea

from your mind to develop it. Instructor Gibson also focused on how you can

analyze an event, issue and even yourself. He taught me how to trace an idea and try

to go deep inside as much as I can, even if you reached a dead end, try to find a way

to go deeper inside more and more trying to find a sophisticated reason or idea to

develop and solve the analysis which is the whole objective of the course. In this

portfolio, I organized my materials according to the priorities of the analysis. First, I

began with my self-analysis issue, because I believe if we can analyze the outside

world, we should start with analyzing ourselves. Then I moved to a global issue that

is happening in the world, which is the Arabian nightmare analysis. Finally, I ended

up the analysis process with specifying in a particular issue, which is the analysis of

our political situation in Egypt (Rumors and Complex thoughts). After organizing my

essays, I put my free writings that I’ve done in class, which are personally one of the

important outcomes that I’ve learnt in this course because they are the prime

reference that I used to collect many ideas. Then the Collage, which reflects my

opinion on my best phrases and paragraphs that I’ve done on my fast free writings

in class. Write as much as you can. Writing is very important. And as our instructor

told us: Writing is a process.

The Pursuit of a Decent Future

From my first day of birth, my family were confused about picking up a name that

suits the conditions and time that I was born. I think it could be a sign of something or

may be not, I’ll try as much as I can in this essay not to manipulate with words to write

an upstanding essay about the analysis of my character. I’ll do my best to describe the

coherency between my personality and my daily attitudes or actions.

Many people think of me that I’m really good at making them laugh out loud in

any place, even in the classroom conferences, hard times and good times. I think of

myself that I have a bit sense of humor, so why am I thinking of this? Is it because I

watched comedy movies everyday; trying to incorporate my reactions with the actor’s

way of making people laugh so I can make a technique in my daily life. Maybe because I

inherited many sarcastic words from my father who’s everyday inspire me with his

fantasy words. I love being able to make people laugh and smile and sometimes without

extending in words make them contented.

According to my academics, I feels like that I want to make something that people

could find it hard to do it; and this begins with thinking of applying in engineering

school. When I was at high school and studying science and mathematics, I was treating

6

Page 7: Rhet 101

my other colleagues who were studying literature, Arabic and other non-science subjects

as if it’s a kind of discrimination. Maybe like I mentioned before that I feels like moving

up high, travelling to the moon or creating things out of nothing when I study hard

courses. When I applied at the American university in Cairo, I was intending architectural

engineering even though I wasn’t good at imagination, creativity or drawing which are

the main requirements or skills to keep running in this major; but this wasn’t the reason

why I changed my major to construction, Probably I think the main reason I’ve made this

choice is that my personality insisted on forcing me to choose the harder and the things

that are a bit sophisticated, that’s why I think it could be a big problem later on for

choosing the hardest way in my life without thinking critically and arrange the

circumstances that suits my ability on doing these things.

Nowadays, The closest people to me see me as if I’m depressed or having

some problems that are stocked in my mind and I cannot remove it.Personally, I feel like

I’m frustrated somehow or I don’t want to eat. I’m suffering from this for six months and

I still don’t know how to wake up from this nightmare that I feel it especially everyday

morning. If I have to analyze this problem, I would rather talk about an issue happened to

me in the past six months. Maybe because I experienced love so early for about six years,

and it had finished six months ago so that makes me feel depressed because I cannot

move on and I’m about to change my daily routine, or maybe I’m really shocked of the

bad ending. I think a young age person like if he/she experienced real love so early, and

find someone who really cares about him/her as if his/her mother is caring and loves

him/her more than anyone, and then everything were gone, could have the same problem

that is facing me right now. I don’t think that it’s something about love or I lost someone

7

Page 8: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

that is very close to me, because I can compare it to another problem that faced me; I lost

my uncle two months ago, although I really loved him and I missed him so much, but I

moved on with my life not putting so many memories on my head and thinking of him

everyday and every night, I think its from the treatment that I’ve been treated for 6 years,

close care, love , waking me up , being beside me on hard times , trying to make me feel

like I’m something special than anyone else and I wasn’t so perfect in giving a mutual

treatment as she was giving and when I tried to do so , she’s gone. I think I’m still feeling

depression and prevention because I’m keeping my problems inside myself and I’m a bit

afraid of getting it out for a simple reason, because in our country it’s a shame that man

gets weaker when he tries to express his feeling and sufferings because of a woman.

The Pursuit of a Decent Future

To analyze yourself you have to be honest, talking to a mirror, trying to extract

the deepest and the deepest, curious of what’s inside you, as if you are playing a movie of

your memories and pausing the important parts in your life and connect them and trying

to make an example of a theorem and this theorem is your personality. My prime issue is

that I cannot give a back to my past, I’m always trying to look at it and feel so miserable

about it. I need to find a solution.

Many people think of me that I’m really good at making them laugh out loud in

any place, even in the classroom conferences, hard times and good times. I think of

myself that I have a bit sense of humor, so why am I thinking of this? Is it because I

watched comedy movies everyday, because I love to watch them and trying to

incorporate my reactions with the actor’s way of making people laugh so I can make a

technique in my daily life, or maybe because I inherited many sarcastic words from my

father who’s everyday inspire me with his fantasy words, and no one can reflect his/her

opinion on someone unless he/she appreciates or loves him/her and I think that’s what I

feel towards my father, due to the respect and the esteem towards him I feel that I want to

act like him. I love being able to make people laugh, smile and sometimes without

14

Page 15: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

extending in words make them contented because I feel like I do something that serves

humanity; make them smile, it’s a big a thing, it could be a solution for many problems, it

somehow releases stress. I don’t know why I’d love to do that to many people even

people that I don’t really know well, but I really love it.

Nowadays, The closest people to me see me as if I’m depressed or having some

problems that are stocked in my mind and I cannot remove it, Although I’m acting as I’m

always use to act, trying to make people laugh and to have fun with my jokes, draw smile

on every face of the surroundings. Maybe they feel that I’m a bit frustrated because my

attitudes changed a little bit and no one could realize this except the closest ones.

Personally, I feel like I’m frustrated somehow or I don’t want to eat. I’m suffering from

this for six months and I still don’t know how to wake up from this nightmare that I feel

it especially everyday morning. If I have to analyze this problem, I would rather talk

about an issue happened to me in the past six months. Maybe because I experienced love

so early for about six years, and it ended up six months ago so that makes me feel

depressed because I cannot move on and I’m about to change my daily routine, or maybe

I’m really shocked of the bad ending. I think a young age person like me if he/she

experienced real love so early, and find someone who really cares about him/her as if

his/her mother is caring and loves him/her more than anyone, and then everything were

gone, could have the same problem that is facing me right now. The biggest problem is

that I don’t know how to move on with my life, how to forget what had happened, I felt

that I was humiliated in this dirty story, I don’t know why do I always think about her

everyday especially when I wake up in the morning, I always try to stalk on her Facebook

account see her new updates. I start thinking why should I still think about her all the

15

Page 16: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

time if she’s the one who left me and betrayed our relationship, maybe she did that

because her family forced her to have a relationship with another guy who’s ready to

propose to her anytime and marry her while I’m still on my first academic year in the

university, or maybe I’m trying to manipulate with reasons and giver her excuses to free

her from her crime and how she ended up such a story started while we’re on 3rd prep and

she really loves him. Maybe I’m still kept with my memories because I keep

remembering the treatment that I’ve been treated for 6 years, close care, love, waking me

up, being beside me on hard times, trying to make me feel like I’m something special

than anyone else and I wasn’t so perfect in giving a mutual treatment as she was giving

and when I tried to do so, she’s gone. I think I’m still feeling depressed and prevented

because I’m keeping my problems inside myself and I’m a bit afraid of getting it out for a

simple reason, because in our country it’s a shame that man gets weaker when he tries to

express his feeling and sufferings because of a woman. But despite of what had happened

to me I’m still preserving some of my features that I mentioned in the last paragraph

which is trying to be funny all the time, having some of the sense of humor, maybe to get

out from the nightmare that my heart is facing right now or maybe because all the people

who really loved me and cared about me are around me at this time knowing very well

that I really loved her and they felt what I’m feeling so they kept beside me to empower

me.

People could have their ups and downs and they have to be curious to find a

solution and analyze the problem very well. As was quoted by the most famous boxer

Muhammad Ali life is more stronger than you are, it will keep knocking you on your

knees, trying to make you a slave to your depression and your miserable memories and

16

Page 17: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

the strongest is the one who keep on receiving, resisting and trying to find a way to get

out, to breath the freedom of mind stop building walls to hide from the truth. I shouldn’t

wait too long standing on the other side of the river, I have to try to look at the bright side

and find a solution and stop looking at the past because the best is yet to come.

Going back to the past, during the two world wars and how it began with the

modern history. If we can compare the abuse of human rights in the past and how the

all of this people, we can also link this to the present and what’s happening now from

Violation is spreading in the Middle East very significantly. In the aftermaths of the war,

the united nations was formed in 1949 and starting the universal declaration of human

rights which it should save human rights through 30 articles and three main basis rights

which are: Justice, freedom, Peace. Where are all these rights? should they issue these

universal rules to save the world from future crisis and disasters and from the greed of

people?? So what happened, why everyday children is killed in vain in Syria and why

people in Palestine are tortured from their invaders, even why should be a term called

invasion after the world war II, maybe because the Jews and the Americans who fight for

the world suffered to much so they want the Arabs to feel the pain they had fell??? Where

In an article called Nazi Israel…Indeed the writer is making a comparison

between the past and the present, and the similarities between Hitler and his Nazi system

and the Israel invasion now in Palestine. He started by mentioning how many neighbor

countries Germany was invading and ruling them and how Israel is totally invaded its

neighbor countries like Palestine, Syria , Jordon and Egypt and also it have a great impact

on the invasion of other countries, let’s stick with this point , does this means that Israel

is trying to repeat the past trying to vanish the middle east and devoted it for its own sake

by fighting and extend its colonies and prepare for another world war to rule the world

like the Nazi did ?? Or because after the Jews had taken their rights and they have now

the right to live and express your opinion freely and Israel become on of the developed

countries in the region and in the whole world, it’s now afraid since it’s between the

middle east which is all about Arab countries , so to secure itself it attacks neighbor

countries to terrify with its power??

human rights through 30 articles and three main basis rights which are: Justice, freedom,

from future crisis and disasters and from the greed of people?? So what happened, why

everyday children are killed in vain in Syria and why people in Palestine are tortured

from their invaders, why did the U.S, which is the most powerful country in the world,

invade Iraq and stole many of the petrol reserves they have?? Even why should be a term

25

Page 26: Rhet 101

called invasion after World war II, maybe because the Jews and the Americans who fight

for the world suffered too much so they want Arabs to feel the pain they had fell??? Why

Arabs specifically, why should they be abused in the whole world in their beliefs,

religions and race? Why terrorism defines the Arab people? Even the media is against

them. Is that because the majority of them are weak countries and don’t have a nuclear

weapon or a powerful hands to defend themselves? Where are all those who are called

the peace advocators in the United Nations to save innocent children from death because

of the unspeakable atrocities violation that Israel and the US had reached??

In an article called Nazi Israel…Indeed the writer is making a comparison

between the past and the present, and the similarities between Hitler and his Nazi system

and the Israel invasion now in Palestine (The article is totally unbiased since its talking

about Richard Falk the American professor of international law at Princeton University

who went to visit Gaza and was detained at the airport). He started by mentioning how

Germany was invading many neighbor countries and ruling them, and how Israel is

totally invaded its neighbor countries like Palestine, Syria, Jordon and Egypt and also it

have a great impact on the invasion of other countries. Let’s stick with this point, does

this means that Israel is trying to repeat the past trying to vanish the middle east and

devoted it for its own sake by fighting and extend its colonies and prepare for another

became on of the developed countries in the region and in the whole world, it’s now

afraid since it’s between the middle east which is all about Arab countries, so to secure

itself, it attacks neighbor countries to terrify them with its power?? Or because of their

26

Page 27: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

historical and religious beliefs they are trying to defend their land from foreigners

(Palestinians) because they cannot give up to take every branch in the land that god had

provided them with. If this related to a religious view, is Judaism accepts killing innocent

people resisting extinction, hoping to live for their own children? Going back to the

comparison between the rate of death in the world war and the Israel-Palestine conflicts;

approximately 5-6 million Jews were killed in the holocaust while the writer is

mentioning that 1.5 million Palestinians only in Gaza including women, children and old

people were killed in cold blood without any war, and still the united states is providing

Israel with weapons of mass destruction to terrify the region or what they are claiming, to

protect themselves from the treachery of the Arabs.

If we analyze the Middle East’s issue, is that because the religious conflicts or an

old vengeance or just greedy thoughts for a huge empire?? Egypt is in an unstable

political situation, the evil oppressor Bashar el asad is oppressing Syrians, labia have a

huge economical gap, and the Palestinian situation still increasing. Is that because of the

United States and its hands on the United Nations, or because the Arab spring deserves to

be killed??

Its not about a definite region, its about humanity, we’re all humans we should

cooperate with each to reduce war and try to make a better future for a new generation.

Many soldiers refuse to involve in many deadly clashes and they forced to do so, and this

is the biggest problem , they are not machine men to be controlled by a dictator , greed

person or organization all what they want is to have a biggest part for its self, its not a

cake , it’s life , many women lost their sons and children for in war. Indeed we don’t need

to develop science or technology more than exploring people’s heart especially the ones

27

Page 28: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

who are not having their to live in their own planet. The conflicts between countries and

regions is the major catalyst for creating terrorism, there should be an equality, they

should create an honest union for human rights. If we are all have slightly differences in

religion, race or even color, we’re all created with the same thing, we’re all humans.

The Arabian Nightmare

We can see by going back to the past during the two World Wars, that

they had begun with the invasion of Poland by Germany with the military being

mobilized and permitted to do anything with the civilians. It was clear that Hitler and the

Nazis had become the sign of evil in modern history. If we can analyze the abuse of

human rights in the past and how the Nazi system was putting Jews in holocausts which

are some kind of gas chambers and killing all of this people, we can also link this with

the present and what’s happening now from massacres in the Middle East. Violation is

spreading in the Middle East very significantly. Does this mean that the World War and

the universal victory of the U.S are not for saving human rights, but a beginning of a new

empire that wants to prove itself in front of the whole world? In the aftermaths of the

World War, the United Nations was formed in 1949 and began to write the Universal

Declaration of Human Rights, which was formed to have the major basis is to save

human rights which are: Justice, Freedom and Peace. Where are all these rights? Did they

issue these universal rules to save the world from future crises and disasters and from the

greed of people or to pretend that they are the guardians of the earth? So what happened?

Why are children everyday killed in vain in Syria and why are people in Palestine

31

Page 32: Rhet 101

tortured from their invaders? Why did the U.S, which is the most powerful country in the

world, invaded Iraq and stole many of their petrol reserves? Why should there even be a

term called invasion after World War II? Maybe because the Jews and the Americans

who fought for the world suffered too much so they want Arabs to feel the pain they had

felt, as if they are extracting out their anger on someone who’s weaker than them. If we

analyze this issue and link it with the previous question (where is the United Nations

from these tragic incidents?) we can say that the United States of America which is the

one who controls the United Nations, permits Israel to do what it wants to do; enforcing

nuclear weapons, killing people in Palestine, frightening the neighboring countries. And

if we pause and start to observe the desire of America of giving Israel the green card, the

answer is very obvious, In fact Israel is controlling more than 50% of the institutions in

the States which means that without this country America is down. Why Arabs

specifically? Why should they be abused in the whole world in their beliefs, religions and

race? Why terrorism defines the Arab people? Even the media is against them. Is that

because the majority of them are weak countries and don’t have a nuclear weapons to

defend themselves? Where are all those who are called the peace advocators in the United

talking about Richard Falk the American professor of international law at Princeton

University who went to visit Gaza and was detained at the airport). He started by

32

Page 33: Rhet 101

mentioning Germany invading many neighboring countries and ruling them, and how

Israel is totally invading Palestine and also it has a great impact on the invasion of other

countries. Let’s stick with this point: does this mean that Israel is trying to repeat the past

by attempting to dispose of the Middle East and enslaving its countries for its own sake,

by threatening them and preparing for another world war to rule the world like the Nazis

did? Or because after the Jews had taken their rights and they have now the right to live

and express their opinion freely and Israel became one of the developed countries in the

region and in the whole world, it’s now afraid since it’s between the Middle East which is

all about Arab countries, so to secure itself, it attacks neighbor countries to terrify them

with its power? Or because of their historical and religious beliefs they are trying to

defend their land from foreigners (Palestinians) because they cannot give up to take every

branch in the land that god had provided them with. If this related to a religious view,

does Judaism accept killing innocent people? Going back to the comparison between the

rate of death in the world war and the Israel-Palestine conflicts; approximately 5-6

million Jews were killed in the holocaust while the writer is mentioning that 1.5 million

Palestinians only in Gaza including women, children and old people were killed in cold

blood without any war, and still the United States is providing Israel with weapons of

mass destruction to terrify the region or what they are claiming, to protect themselves

from the treachery of the Arabs.

If we analyze the Middle East’s issue, does that happen because the religious

conflicts or an old vengeance or just greedy thoughts for a huge empire? The world

should come up with solutions that fit all opinions and recommendations. First, they have

to clean up the mess that the media has done to the rights of Arabs. Media has to show

33

Page 34: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

people what is happening in the Middle East exactly to grab the attention of the world in

order to call for their rights and help them. The United Nations should stop being biased

to the U.S (unfortunately its pretending that it’s biased to human rights), because on the

long run if any issue happened with any developed or powerful country in Europe or

Asia, and they keep standing beside the States and Israel the issue will be developed and

will result into a cold war like what is happening now in Iraq. The United Nations must

do two things: change its location, and its members must be represented by every country

in the world even the small and the weak ones. Talking about Palestine, if America really

need to achieve justice, they have to compensate the loss of the properties caused by the

expulsion of Palestinians refugees by giving and providing them with financial aids and

money to build their own land , at least to reduce the conflicts and the deadly clashes.

Its not about a definite region, its about humanity. We’re all humans. we should

cooperate with each to reduce war and try to make a better future for a new generation.

Soldiers are not machine men to be controlled by a dictator, greed person or organization

all what it wants is to have a biggest part for its self, its not a cake, it’s life, many women

lost their sons and children in war. Indeed we don’t need to develop science or

technology more than exploring people’s heart especially the ones who are not having

their right to live in their own planet. The conflicts between countries and regions are the

major catalyst for creating terrorism. There should be equality. They should create an

honest union for human rights.

Rumors and Complex Thoughts

Egypt is witnessing the first presidential elections since it declared

its independence in 1954. The Egyptian people went for the first time

to elect whoever seems to them capable of leading the country to a

brighter future. In the second round of the presidential elections

Mohamed Morsy the freedom and Justice Islamic candidate and Ahmed

Shafiq the last prime minister of Egypt under Mubarak’s rule went head

to head seeking to become the first president after the Egyptian

revolution. The results of the voting are supposed to be announced on

Thursday by the government officials and the two candidates are

supposed to be silent until the results are announced. However a

couple of hours after 12am on Tuesday Mohamed Morsy’s campaign started to

announce that they won and gave statistics to prove it. However if we look up

close one could notice that this is against the law and is

not appropriate in any way or form due to many reasons that will be

discussed in this essay.

Several articles started popping up in the internet declaring Morsy

37

Page 38: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

the winner of the presidential elections. Ahmed Abo Zeid wrote an

article on a site called Egypt.com announcing that Morsy won. First,

he starts the essay saying that Morsy’s campaign announced that he has

won and that this is a confirmed fact. This is ethically wrong because

the writer is using the campaign as a verified source of information

and the campaign itself is biased and we can’t use their announcements

until the government confirms the results. The he started saying that

the campaign has official papers from the judges in the election halls

that declare Morsy as the winner. First of all this was announced on

the 19th of June and at the time Cairo judges didn’t finish counting

the votes and second the judges can’t give any papers to the campaign,

they can simply give them numbers at the very most. The information

that the writer is portraying is false and faulty Then he started saying that these

numbers will be announced by the campaign to the public soon and he said that

Morsy won by 52% of the votes and Ahmed shafiq won b 48%. Again these

statistics can’t be seenas true because the campaign doesn’t have any legal

authority to do

so.

This essay is not supporting Shafiq in any way or form, but Shafiq and his

campaign showed respect to the laws of the government and was

silent, awaiting the results of the elections. In the end we are a

legal country and the law has to be respected, and from the start

Morsy is showing self ego even before the final results are announced.

38

Page 39: Rhet 101

Abdelghany

These elections are one of a kind in Egypt’s history and the Egyptian

people are contributing in the elections positively. Morsy’s campaign

started announcing that it won the presidential elections. Even if

Morsy is the winner he has to respect the law because he is an

Egyptian citizen and has to abide to the law. Members of the public

have to be aware and they shouldn’t listen to what some people and

articles are saying about the winner. They have to wait until the

results are announced by a legal entity represented in the supreme

committee of Elections. If we stop obeying the law Egypt will be in

chaos.

Also In another article, at globalpost.com, they are writing about the way how

muslim brotherhood are saying that their candidate Mohamed morsy has won the

presidential elections by 52.5% while his opponent shafiq ( the Hosni’s Mubarak last

prime minister as the article mentioned to prove that he was a significant figure in the old

regime) secured 47.5%. As the article mentioned Reuters quoted that Morsi is the first

Egypt was under the rule of the military from the era of Abdelnasser and Mohamed nagib

and the president of peace anwar el sadat until the former president hosny Mubarak.

elections but the information that the writer was portraying were false and faulty since it

wasn’t official and Cairo is supposed to have the highest number of votes and these votes

could have changed everything upside down. Then he started saying that these numbers

will be announced by the campaign to the public soon and he said that Morsy won by

52% of the votes and Ahmed shafiq won by 48%. Again these statistics can’t be seen as

Also the article mentioned that after a year and a half of witnessing

democracy, freedom of opinion and view, the SCAF saved the legitimacy for itself by

issuing some rules in the constitution to empower their authority; like the dissolution of

people’s assembly and running the martial law in the streets which could be defined like

the military trials, to keep tracking their mission of running the country without any

power higher than them. It could be obvious that when the leaders of the SCAF felt that

Morsy with all these statistics was about to won, they should put these rules in order not

to be trialed by the heads of the Muslims brotherhood, or maybe it could be smart from

them not to put hands on judges and not to fraud the elections in order to have a

compromise between people’s desire and their fears and they ran the elections and left

Morsy to win.

People dream and the youth who sacrificed their life for this moment need their

rights and the era of the old regime is totally ended even the last one in the elections

Ahmed shafiq, even if the majority are opposing Morsy and all the Muslims brotherhood

and they voted for him only to get rid of the old regime, they shouldn’t be afraid from

them. Morsy the new Egyptian president who was fairly and for the first time came from

COLLAGE

A collage is like a piece of art that inspires the audience. Imagine you have some pictures and you want to express the feeling that these are the memories that cannot be forgotten, left or thrown from your mind, you want to say, “ I love them!” Why shouldn’t you collect all these pictures and try to organize them in a way to come up with a big heart that signifies how much the pictures move and stir your emotions. That’s what a collage is about, trying to integrate many different things together to form one big thing. It’s creative. If you haven’t tried this before, I’m sure you will be excited. Try it!
