Introduction
Wearelookingforanyself-organizedgroup,withademonstratedinterestinbiocharandatleast5
members,locatedanywhereintheUSA,tohostthe2013USBiocharInitiative(USBI)Conference.
Theselectedgroupwillbetheprimaryorganizersofthe2013USBIConference.Theconferencecanbe
heldanywhereintheUnitedStatesincludingAlaska,HawaiiandTerritories.Proposalsmustbereceivedbytheselectioncommittee([email protected])nolaterthan5:00pmonFriday,March16,2012.
RequirementsandSelectionCriteria
Weareproposingtheconferencebeheldinlatesummerorearlyfall2013butotherdatesmaybe
considered.Proposersmustspecifyexactdates.ThelocationcanbeanywhereintheUnitedStates
(includingAlaska,HawaiiandTerritories).Yourproposalmustshowanexactlocationsuchasa
University,municipalbuilding,hotelorotherlocationwithassurancethattheproposeddatesarebeing
heldopenuntiltheproposalreviewteamcanreturnitsdecisiononorbeforeOctober18,2012.We
suggestaplanningnumberof300attendeeswithflexibilitytoaccommodateachangingfinalnumber
possiblyaslargeas350ormore.
Themajorityofthetwo-pageproposalsshouldbefocusedonhowyourgroupisabletobringthismajor
undertakingtoasuccessfulconclusion.Topicsofinterestinclude:timeandresourcesoftheproposing
organizationtoplanandimplementthisconference;socialandpoliticaladvantagesofthelocation;
nearbybiochar-relatedsitesforfieldtripoptions;easeoftravelforparticipants;andtheabilitytobe
healthy,cleanandgreen.Anappendixtotheproposalshouldincludetwoitems:1.briefbiosketchesof
theorganizers,and2.asimplebudgetshowingestimatedcostsandrevenuesforthetotaleventand
brokenoutonaperpersonbasis.Selectionwillbebasedontheproposersresponsestotheabove
listedtopicsofinterest.
SupportfromUSBI
IfselectedyourteamwillreceivesupportfromUSBIinthefollowingways:
1. SeedfundingfortheconferencetobepaiduponselectionandtobepaidatcompletionoftheConference.TotalsupportfromUSBIwillnotexceed$5,000.00USdollars.
2. Aconferenceplannersguideincludingbudgetplanningsheets,time-linesuggestions,adirectoryofcontacts,exampleletters,andsuggestedreviewprocesses.

FinancialResponsibilities
Thehostingorganizationagreestotakeonthefinancialresponsibilityforthisevent.Planningshouldbe
donetolimitthecostofregistrationsothatasmanypeopleaspossiblecanattendtheevent.Abest
effortshouldbemadetoofferstudentrates,speakerdiscountsandassistancetothosewhoneedit.
USBIwillworkjointlywiththehostingorganizationtoplanabudgetbasedonourpastexperienceand
willseekscholarshipsandothersupportforattendees.
