Numerous studies show thathumans are social creaturesand too much isolation canhave a negative effect on men-

tal and physical health. To help lone-ly elders socialise, a novel adult daycare centre is being set up at JeevanSandhya Smruti, an old age homelocated on Bhagwat Vidyapeeth campus.

The centre is for senior citizenswho get bored because their familymembers are working or busy else-where throughout the day. “Familieshave become very busy. We inviteelders, who feel left out, to come hereand spend time with us,” said

Kalpana Gandhi, co-ordinator ofJeevan Sandhya Smruti.

The centre offers activities likesinging, music, painting, knittingand expert lectures among others tokeep the seniors occupied. “If there isa group of senior citizens who wishto go out for movies, we will providesupport for that as well,” saysKalpana. The centre will be open foroutsiders from 3 pm. The organisersare also planning a pick-up service infuture.

Pravin Sanghvi, trustee ofMumbadevi trust that runs the oldage home, said, “Thirty years ago, westarted the old age home. Now, anysenior citizen can come in, take partin various fun activities and enjoyeach other’s friendship.”

Acting on the complaint filedby former faculty of NationalInstitute of Design (NID)Deepa Chalke, National

Human Rights Commission (NHRC)has issued a notice to the institute, seeking appropriate action inChalke’s alleged sexual harassmentcase. The design school has alsobeen given a copy of Chalke’s peti-tion.

The Commission has directedNID Director Pradyumna Vyas totake appropriate measures onChalke’s sexual harassment com-plaint and her subsequent termina-tion. The institute has been orderedto submit an ‘Action Taken Report’within four weeks.

The Commission had received acomplaint from Chalke, allegingsexual harassment at work place andinaction by the authorities onMarch 7.

Ahmedabad Mirror, on March 3,

had reported how NID abruptly ter-minated the service of Chalke with-out assigning a reason.

Insiders suspect the termination, which they term unlawful, could bethe result of a sexual harassmentcomplaint Chalke had filed againstthe warden of the boys’ hostel onGandhinagar campus in Novemberlast year.

The 38-year old single mother, who was appointed in NID’s ApparelDesign and MerchandisingDepartment at Gandhinagar on

August 22, 2011, alleged in the let-ter, ‘Since the time I have joined, Iam being subjected to discriminato-ry practices, and my previous com-plain has not made any difference. Ihave been subjected to unfair treat-ment’.

Demanding a fair chance, Chalkehad challenged the termination onFebruary 23, but Vyas rejected herapplication.

According to the two-year con-tract, her performance was to bereviewed on completion of one year.

Rights panel issues notice to NID in Prof Chalke’s caseNational Human Rights Commission asks the design school to take appropriate measures on Chalke’s harassment complaint and her abrupt termination

Audience bursts into laughterwhen 17-year-old AmitKhuva, a mimic artist, takes tostage. But little do they knowabout the teenager’s medical

condition who suffers from severehaemophilia. The brave boy, who hasjust cleared his class XII exam andaspires to be an engineer, wants tospread awareness of the disorder.

“I was only 10-month-old when Iwas detected with haemophilia. Myfather tapped me on my chick andmy face swelled. My parents took meto several doctors and hospitals butto no avail. Finally I was taken to V SHospital where I was diagnosed withthis bleeding disorder,” he said.

For 38-year-old Prahar Trivedi, aprofessional photographer who suf-fers from a rare kind haemophilia, isan inspiration to all. Trivedi deliversmotivation lectures and asks peopleto take up challenges of life.

“I have a factor 10 deficiencywhich is considered very rare. Inevery lakh people, we find onehaemophilic and among one lakhhaemophilic, a person with my con-dition has been found. Because of thisI constantly need blood plasmaunits,” said Trivedi who has beenadministered 37 blood plasma unitsbetween March 17 and May 25.

“Red Cross offers plasma unit forRs 250 at a subsidised rate. However, including other medical expenses, itcosts me Rs 450. The condition is notcurable and the treatment is veryexpensive,” he said.

GUJARAT HAEMOPHILIA SOCIETYTrivedi’s father Dilip Trivedi foundedGujarat Haemophilia Society whichhas over 659 registered patients. Of

these, 400 are in the city. “The society has been doing its job byhelping patients get their factor atcheaper rate. But we need the gov-ernment help and aid to spreadawareness of it. The treatment is verycostly. A poor can’t afford it. The gov-ernment should provide financialhelp by subsidising factors,” he added.

Dr Ashwin Patel, a haematologist

and vice-president of GujaratHaemophilia Society who offers hon-orary service at the organisation, said:“Unlike thalassaemia, there is a lackof awareness of this medical condi-tion among the masses. The stategovernment should provide facilitiesand infrastructure required for thetreatment. Though Rs 2 crore was setaside for haemophilia patients in anearlier assembly session, the situationhas not changed much.”

People who make donation toGujarat Haemophilia Society get taxrebate, the doctor said.

The government does provide freeplasma in Civil Hospital but patientswho live in far-flung areas have totravel to big cities for blood transfu-sion. Medical facilities for thesepatients should be made available atall district civil hospitals, he said.

“There can be minor, moderateand severe haemophilia. Couple mustundergo medical tests before mar-riage to avoid the occurrence of thismedical condition in their kids,” DrPatel said.

Britain’s concernsover the 2002 Gujarat riotshave come in the way of itupgrading its engagementwith the booming state in thenear future, even as the coun-try expands its diplomaticnetwork across India with newposts in Hyderabad andChandigarh.

Despite such developmentplans, there is no plan toupgrade the Ahmedabadoffice. It must be noted thatBritain has a large diaspora ofpeople of Gujarati-origin.

A foreign office spokesmansaid, “Since the riots in 2002,in light of our concerns abouthuman rights abuses whichtook place then, we have hadno ministerial or senior offi-cial contact with senior polit-ical ranks of the Gujarat stategovernment”.

“We currently have a smalllocally staffed British TradeOffice in Ahmedabad. Wekeep our position with regardto our representation inGujarat under careful review,”the spokesman added.

The expansion of two postswill take the number of UKposts in India to seven, mak-ing its presence in India the

largest diplomatic network ofany country. It has posts inMumbai, Kolkata, Chennai,Bangalore and the high com-mission in New Delhi. It alsohas trade office in Pune.

“We have plans in time toadd further UK staff. EachDeputy High Commissionerwill be supported by a team ofskilled locally employed stafffocusing on trade and invest-

ment, the political economy, knowledge economy, energyand low carbon opportuni-ties,” the spokesman furtheradded.

“We want a deeper andmore sophisticated under-standing of India and emerg-ing powers on a range of issuesincluding politics, culture, education and sports,” headded. PTI

E ven as we kept our eyespeeled for new-mommaAishwarya Rai Bachchan

at Cannes, we caught a slim-mer, trimmer and healthierVikram Chatwal as the othersurprise Indian this year.Chatwal, who attended thefestival last year to promote aMexcian film in which he dida bit role, had a more socialagenda this time. The NewYork hotelier looked prettymuch in control of his lifeonce again as he attended ahigh-profile party with thelikes of Nicky and ParisHilton, guest-of-honour Heidi Klum and Alec Baldwinamong other A-listers. Butwith his new supermodel girlfriend Angela Lindvall by his side.

She did it. Aishwarya made herkeenly anticipated appearance atCannes, in an avatar that would

not give her detractors too much tocomplain about. After the intensescrutiny and relentless criticism ofher post-partum weight, the actormade her first media call in a hotel, looking chic and slim and dressed in an Angelo Katsapis outfit.

While we know that most of herappearances so far have been cour-tesy the various brands she endorses, this year one of them, a cosmeticgiant, has reportedly struck a richdeal with a news daily. In fact, herfirst so-called official interview hasbeen packaged and pitched as anexclusive, which the brand’s market-ing team has been fiercely guarding.

After her Angelo Katpasis appear-ance, Mrs Bachchan went for themuch-talked Abu Jani-SandeepKhosla cream sari with chikankari

work and antique gold embroidery(draped in a different way) for thered carpet. In a bid to hide all theflab, the Indian beauty was far too‘undercover’!

Meanwhile, her pictures have predictably sent her virtual world ina tizzy: this time the debate is overhow exactly she managed to shedthe excess baggage in such a shorttime. Damned if you do, damned ifyou don’t?

IT DID TURN OUT TO BE ‘ROWDY’ With Rowdy Rathore’s release a week away, Amdavadis seem all set to welcome the Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrerin ‘rowdy’ style. Despite tight security at the promotional event of Rowdy Rathore, fans managed to rush and glance at the‘Khiladi’ and ‘Dabanggi’. The unruly behaviour and excitement of fans was (mis)handled by the ‘well-built’ securitymen. Your vigilant diarist gets you this picture to give you an idea of all the rowdiness that took place at a city mall where people, including media, were left short of being mauled. To see the stars responsible for the frenzy, turn to page 10.

A fter his misadventure withsocial networking,Sidhartha Mallya has

reportedly checked out of thecountry for some well-recom-mended R&R. The diarist haslearnt that Mallya Junior, whowas set to take off for the US topursue a career in acting postthe IPL season, is now vacation-

ing in Europewith hisfather. Wehear there issome seriousfather-son talkon the cards, while theenfant terrible waits for thestorm to blow over and grapplewith the gag-order imposed bythe company. In spiritual worldthey call it Vipasana.

On Sunday, patronsat a Mumbai fivestar got an eyeful

and more of a dapperAkshay Kumardressed in a weather-defying all-black suit

and matching acces-sories. The actor was in the company of agood looking Spaniard, the two Michelin-star chef Sergi Arola. The occasion was ahush-hush photo shoot the two rock starsdid to promote Arola’s new restaurant atthe hotel. Arola, who is known as muchas for his passion for music as his flair forfood, is all set to launch his eponymousrestaurant here, after Barcelona and Paris. On this hot summer day, the chef whowears his stardom and his tattoos effort-lessly, got along famously with Akshay, who obviously takes his role as food show host quite seriously.

CITY www.ahmedabadmirror.com/city AhmedabadMirror SATURDAY, MAY 26, 2012 6

A hmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) is privatising its civic woesredressal system and computerisingthe process. The new system will bein place from August 15, according

to officials. Under the system, AMC wouldoutsource the redressal of civic problems toprivate companies. These parties would getcontracts from AMC for solving problems per-taining to drainage, water, roads, cattle men-ace, street lights, door to dump facilities, ani-mal carcass (skeleton) removal among others.

People would be required to lodge com-plaints at their zonal office. They will be pro-vided with a computer generated receipt thatwould contain name of the complainant, hisaddress, name of the AMC official responsi-ble and the deadline for the resolution ofissue. At present complainants are given blue, yellow or pink receipts. The existing system

neither centralises the entire city’s complaintrecords nor does it put them completely intocomputer making them not readily accessi-ble. A system similar to MIS exists even nowbut only for the monsoon months. The MISwas implemented primarily in response to thefailure of Jan Suvidha Scheme that waslaunched in South, West and New West Zonesof city. The scheme was meant to have fast-tracked the resolution of civic problems, how-ever in practice complainants got responsevery late, sources said.

“The best thing with the new MIS is thatthe entire city’s record would be accessible tome at the click of a mouse. It would be veryeasy to keep track of the number of com-plaints coming from different areas of city.Besides, those officers who are not perform-ing and solving the problems till the deadlinewill be questioned and asked for the reasonsfor delay. This would ensure efficiency andserve people’s interests,” said MunicipalCommissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.

TRIO WHO CHEATED TRADERS ARRESTED

Three members of a gang that operated in different districts andcheated businessman to the tune of lakhs of rupees were arrestedon Thursday night by Vastrapur police. Three more members —Bharat Patel, Chetan and Sunil — are at large. Around 25 cases offraud across the state have been detected. The gang took godowns on rent and then disguised as businessmenthey would approach wholesale dealers of rice, wheat, tobacco, betelnut etc. They would give a bulk order and get the stock deliv-ered at the godown. After hoodwinking the driver, they would thenescape with the booty. On May 17, last year, Yash Kothari of Ms Kothari & Company in Mad-hupura market received a call for delivery of 910 kilo of betelnutcosting Rs 1.48 lakh at a godown in Thaltej. With the promise thatthe entire amount would be handed over on delivery, a truck-full ofstock was sent. The stock was unloaded in the presence of a 19-year-old boy. The boy then took the driver a little distance away fromthe godown, telling him that the buyer would come a while with themoney. He then left to get tea for the driver. When the boy did notturn up for quite some time, the driver went to the godown only torealise that the stock had vanished.Kothari filed a complaint with Vastrapur police. Investigations re-vealed that the godown was taken on rent. The police kept a watchon the landline number from where Kothari was called. They traceda mobile number that regularly called on that number and zeroed inon Amin alias Kalubhai Ramchandani, 30, resident of Harshnagar,Patan. He led the police to two other members, Bipin Thakkar andhis son, Hardik, 19, also from Patan.Amin used to send Bipin to different businessmen and bring backvisiting cards after inquiring with them. Amin would then call thedealer and place a huge order, which they would be asked to deliverat a rented godown. They would then escape with the stock and sellit to someone at a lower price. The gang members have defraudedtraders in Rajkot, Modasa, Deesa, Vijapur, Surat and Ahmedabad.Police have recovered 520 kilo of betelnut that was stolen fromKothari. NIFTian’s smarttrolley to makeshopping faster The electronic trolley automatically receives, saves andtransmits product information to complete billing process, thus saving customers from standing in a queue

A n NIFT, Gandhinagar graduatehas designed an electronic trol-ley which promises to not onlymake shopping trips fun but

also increase sales for retailers. VinayPrajapati (28), who recently complet-ed his masters in fashion technology, has designed a trolley equipped withwireless and radio frequency identifi-cation (RFID) technologies, which canautomatically detect, receive, save andtransmit product information to com-plete the billing process. This is aimedat enhancing customer satisfaction byreducing time consumption and alsocutting cost of services and inventorymanagement at the billing counter.

“The inspiration for this trolleycame from my own shopping experi-ence. No customer enjoys standing ina queue to get the billing done. It issheer waste of time. The RFID trolleyhelps in fast shopping and checkout. The trolley automatically calculatesthe worth of the good inside it, thusminimising the time at the billingcounter. It also has a navigator, whichwill guide the customers to differentsections of the store. This will helpattracting customers to that particularstore and help the retailers in increas-ing footfalls,” said Prajapati. The trol-

ley will also help the retailers to trackthe buying behaviour of customers.

Prajapati’s research concentrateson automation of retail process thatinvolves customers. He said, “One cansave on man power required to man-age a retail store if RFID is imple-mented at item level. More over RFIDcan automate and reduce humanerrors at payment counters. It makesthe process efficient.”

“If all goes fine I will makeadvancements in present proposaland instal prototype in an apparel orfashion accessories outlet and recordcustomers’ review. It will help meprove that time is indeed money,”Prajapati added.

Bharatiya Janata Partyleaders LK Advani and SushmaSwaraj did not attend the key partyrally in Mumbai on Friday eveningdue to prior engagements, partyleaders said, denying that theirabsence was due to any discontent.

The party said the absence of thetwo leaders was known much earli-er. It also showed an invite of therally, which did not mentionAdvani’s name.

“Advani’s schedule was fixed ear-lier so he is not there and SushmaSwaraj has to attend a programmein Ghaziabad on Saturday morn-ing,” said party spokespersonNirmala Sitharaman.

Asked if both the leaders decidednot to attend the rally as they wereunhappy with the change in theparty constitution that would allowa second term to party presidentNitin Gadkari, Sitharaman said:“There has been no discontent overthe party resolution and he (Advani)is fully with us... it (any discontent)is all in the minds of the people.”

Another party leader said: “It wasknown since long that we will passan amendment to the constitution, and it is not for any particularleader. It will benefit all presidentsat state and district level as well. Why would there be a sudden dis-content over something that isknown for so long?”

Party sources added that Advaniwas not well and suffering from athroat infection. He had, however, addressed the valedictory functionof the meet before leaving.

Sushma Swaraj also denied spec-ulation that there was a rift amongparty leaders.

“I respect and honour all deci-sions of the party. Please do notdraw any other conclusions. I mustreach Delhi tonight (Friday night)because I have to leave early morn-ing for an important function in UPtomorrow (Saturday). I cannotattend tomorrow’s (Saturday) func-tions unless I take an early flight toDelhi,” she posted on micro-blog-ging site Twitter.

SENIOR LEADERS UNHAPPY WITH NITIN GADKARIThe clarifications came after specu-lations of serious cracks in the topleadership did the rounds. Advani’snon-unavailability was seen as hisunhappiness with Gadkari gettingthe unprecedented second consecu-tive three-year term.

Gadkari’s term will now end in

2015 which means that the partywill go to the 2014 Lok Sabha elec-tion under him, underminingAdvani’s role. Advani, many believe, has not yet ruled himself out as theprime ministerial candidate for BJP.

Incidentally, many senior leaderswanted change in presidentshipafter the patry’s poor show in thefive state assembly elections. BJPhad performed badly in UP andPunjab where its seat count wentdown and lost power inUttarakhand. Goa provided the sil-ver lining where it defeatedCongress.

Gadkari’s decision to bring UmaBharati from Madhya Pradesh tolead the party in UP did not payoff. Besides, reinducting formerparty general secretary Sanjay Joshiand putting him in charge of pollsdid not go well with his adversaryGujarat Chief Minister NarendraModi. AGENCIES

Vinay plans to instal a prototype at one of the retail outlets and get customer feedback

L K Advani, Sushma’s absence pre-decided;there is no rift: BJPAmendment to extend president’s term was known for long, says spokesperson

MODI MAY BE IN BJP PARLIAMENTARY BOARDThe new-found bon homie between Nitin Gadkari and Narendra Modi could seethe Gujarat chief minister getting into the party’s Parliamentary Board soon. Indications are that Gadkari could induct Modi into the powerful organ of the par-ty following the recent coming together of the two that seems to have upset quitea few equations. Asked whether any party chief minister could get into the Parlia-mentary Board, a veiled reference to Modi, BJP spokesperson RavishankarPrasad said, “BJP president has discretionary powers and no one objects to it.”Only yesterday, Gadkari is believed to have extracted the resignation of SanjayJoshi from the national executive at the behest of Modi. Today, Modi and Gadkarireached the stage together at a public meeting following the national executivehere, displaying their new bonding. Gadkari had come to the venue earlier butwaited for Modi to arrive so that they could take the podium together. PTI

Sushma gave the rally a miss because she had to reach Delhi on Friday night, while Advani didn’t attend due to throat infection

The state board is not the onealways committing errors inquestion papers. Such presti-gious institutes like IITs couldalso go wrong at times. A week

before the result of IIT-JEE exam wasannounced, Vijay Pratima Mittal, achemistry teacher running a privatecoaching centre in Rajasthan, had

made representations with regards toerror in the answer key of chemistrypaper. It has been more than 15 daysbut she has not received any reply.

Dr Mittal wrote to the special sec-retary, technical education in theMinistry of HRD and the organisingchairman of IIT-JEE drawing theirattention to the error in the answerkey. Dr Mittal claims, “The answerkey of JEE 2012 was published onMay 7 on the website of IITs. I

observed a mistake in the answer ofquestion 28 in paper 2, section II(chemistry). Option (A) has beenshown as the correct answer whichis wrong. The correct answer is option (B).”

5.25 LAKH STUDENTS AFFECTEDArguing that it affected 5.25 lakh stu-dents who took IIT-JEE, she said theanswer keys should be corrected.

“Question 28 is of four marks and

due to wrong answer the merit of thestudents will be greatly affected. It isvery much possible that the studentswho appeared in JEE-2012 are nottaking any action about this mistakebecause they believe that IIT-JEEauthorities are highly qualified andthey cannot make any mistake. Theyalso feel that the answers given bythe IIT-JEE must be 100 per cent cor-rect, but the authorities had alreadyaccepted their mistake in question

number 23 of this section and theyagreed to give bonus marks to all students.”

An Ahmedabad-based chemistryteacher Aalap Shah, too, is con-vinced with the correct answer beingoption B.

He said, “In the question, the nec-essary condition for hydrolysis ofcyanide group into the acid is notgiven, therefore, the nearest answershould be B instead of A.”

him. Fearing his arrest, Jagan’s moth-er kissed and blessed him on his fore-head when he left the house in themorning. The CBI questioned Jaganindividually and together with threeothers.

Sources said that the probe agen-cy questioned Jagan on the Vadarevuand Nizampatnam Ports and Indus-trial Corridor (VANPIC) deal in thepresence of industrialist Nimmagad-da Prasad and senior bureaucrat K VBrahamandna Reddy. Both the men

are currently in prison. Prasad alleg-edly invested over Rs 840 crore in Ja-gan’s media houses in return for the14,000-acre land allotted to VANPICby Jagan’s father, YSR, when he wasthe chief minister of Andhra Pradeshin 2008.

Sources said that Jagan gave non-commital replies to most questionsposed by CBI Joint Director V VLakshminarayana and Superintend-ent of Police (investigating officer)Venkatesh.

The ED is conducting a simulta-neous probe into the money launder-ing aspect and the investments flowninto Jagan’s various companies, in-cluding Jagati Publications, BharatiCements and Sandur Power amongothers. The CBI on Thursday had ar-rested Andhra Pradesh Excise Minis-ter Mopidevi Venkataramana in con-

FINALLY, INDIA LAUGH LAST After a thrilling winagainst South Korea, courtesy a last-minute goal by SKUthappa, it was diffi-cult for India hockeycoach Michael Nobbs

to hide his excitement. India edged pastKorea 2-1 in the Azlan Shah tourna-ment, having suffered a 1-5 defeatagainst New Zealand earlier.

“I’m obviously delighted with the re-sult. The victory from a last-minute goalmade my heart’s pacemaker beganfunctioning again,” said Nobbs.

“We made a silly error to concedethe penalty corner that gave theequaliser to South Korea. That was partof the mistakes we committed in thesecond half,” he added.

The Australian was not happy withthe way his wards played in the second-half but said the win was good gift forhim. “We played according to plan inthe first half, but in the second half wedid not play as we wanted to. We did notstick out our plan in the second ses-sion, but did well in patches,” he said.

“I was really angry at the mistakethat gave away the equaliser. But thelast-minute goal was a nice present.”

On Thursday, the coach had rippedinto his squad over its pummelling byNew Zealand, saying much work re-mained before the former power wasready for the London Games.

Nobbs had especially harsh wordsfor his defence, calling it “awful” forleaking what he called easy goals bythe Black Sticks on the first day of theMalaysian tournament.

“We were really bad at the back.Everything we talked about and prac-tised in training was forgotten,” Nobbstold reporters in the northernMalaysian city of Ipoh, site of the annu-al hockey tournament.

The seven-team tournament whichalso includes Great Britain, Pakistan,Argentina, South Korea and Malaysia isan important last chance for teams totune up and hone line-ups before theOlympics in July.

India dominated Olympic hockeyfrom the 1920s to the 1950s. A recentrun of good form has raised hopes of astrong result in London, with much ofthe credit going to Nobbs.

But Nobbs said the team went backto “our old style of play” against the Ki-wis, accusing defenders of letting theirmarks get away, and singling out Rupin-der Pal Singh and V Raghunath.

Nobbs said the side, ranked 10th inthe world, must figure out how to raiseits game against better teams likefourth-ranked Great Britain and seventh-ranked New Zealand if they want a goodshowing at the Olympics. AGENCIES

Nobbs ecstaticafter close winover S Korea

S K Uthappa’s last-minutedeflection off a TusharKhandekar diagonal crossearned India a 2-1 victory

over South Korea in the Azlan ShahCup hockey, marking a rare occasionwhen it was not the Indian defencewilting in the closing stages. Thewinning goal, on a move down theleft flank, was the culmination of acounter-attack that began with theIndian custodian Bharat Chetribringing off a fine save at the top ofthe circle at the other end of thepitch. Chetri had to rush out to dis-possess Korean striker Jang Jong-Hyun, who was sprinting inunmarked with the Indian defend-ers nowhere in the frame.

The brisk counter brought thesmiles back to faces of the Indiansquad, and coach Michael Nobbssaid, “It made my heart pacemakerresume functioning after making asilly error in conceding an equalis-er just minutes earlier.”

The Indian defence, which heldits ground in the first session by clos-ing out the gaps that resulted in anembarrassing 1-5 defeat at the handsof New Zealand just 24 hours earlier, seemed to be giving the game awaytoward the end after enjoying a leadfor most of the match.

Ace penalty corner shooterSandeep Singh placed a drag-flick intothe roof of the cage in the 11th minuteto give India the lead. That was theonly penalty corner earned by India inthe match, where close man-to-manmarking confined the first half’s pro-ceedings mostly to the midfield.

With increasing urgency in theirraids, South Korea came back strong-ly to exert pressure on the Indiandefence after the breather. Indianshad a close shave when a penaltycorner shot rebounded off the cross-piece and once when an unmarkedKorean defender, in a rare show ofexuberance, sent a wild shot widewhen in a goal-scoring position.

The Koreans managed to drawparity in the 66th minute with anaccurate penalty corner flick fromNam Hyun-Woo, whose low shotwent into the goal off ManpreetSingh’s stick.

India were clearly under pressurefor most of the second session, dur-ing which coach Nobbs said theyfailed to stick to the game-plan, butthe last gasp move, starting fromthe top of the Indian circle hadthem celebrating. “We’re continu-ing to make silly errors, and one ofsuch mistakes conceded the penal-ty corner that earned South Koreathe equaliser,” said Nobbs.

Earlier, some familiarity with theKorean tactics seemed to havehelped India in narrowing downthe yawning gaps that were evidentin their previous outing.

The match also marked an

impressive return to internationalhockey for half-back Gurbaj Singh, who of late has been on the side-lines after his impressive show inthe World Cup two years ago.During his recent period of recu-peration, Gurbaj missed theOlympic Qualifiers and also therecent four-nation tournament inLondon that was a test event forOlympic games facilities.

NEW ZEALAND SLAM FIVE MORENew Zealand continued their goal-scoring spree to post a runaway 5-2victory over Pan-Amercian champi-ons Argentina, forcing as many as10 penalty corners in stampingtheir authority.

The New Zealanders, who hadsquandered several scoring chancesearlier in the game, got their acttogether with three goals in the last13 minutes of play to surge to thetop of the points table. New Zealandhave six points from two matches, followed Pakistan with three fromone outing and India with threefrom two games.

Argentina took an early leadthrough a third-minute field goal byLucas Cammareri, who shot in aftersidestepping New Zealand goal-keeper Kyle Pontifex.

Phil Burrows drew parity for NewZealand in the 32nd minute on apass from Simon Child, and RichardPetherick converted a penalty cor-ner in the 44th minute to put theBlack Sticks 2-1 ahead.

Argentina was back on level inthe 53rd minute through LucasVila’s rasping drive. Then came thethree-goal burst from New Zealandas Hayward (57th minute), ShayNeal (59th) and Arun Panchia (64th)made entries on the score-sheet.

Argentina have lost both theirmatches.

MALAYSIA HOLD BRITAINTwo scintillating field goals in thelast three minutes of play earnedMalaysia a 3-3 draw with GreatBritain, the highest ranked team inthe tournament that turned out forthe first game.

Britain drew first blood in thefifth minute on a field goal fromGlenn Kirkman, and Azlan Misrondraw level for Malaysia in the 10thminute. Field goals from AshleyJackson (20th minute) and RobMoore (35th minute) put Britain 3-1 ahead and they were heading fora victory until Saari produced two sparkling goals in the 67th and68th minutes.

England dismissed WestIndies’ mainstay ShivnarineChanderpaul as the tourists’ collapsecontinued on the first day of the sec-ond Test at Trent Bridge here onFriday.

The West Indies were 154 for six at tea, with Marlon Samuels 41 notout and captain Darren Sammy, who’d won the toss and batted withthe ground bathed in sunny condi-tions and blue skies overhead, unbeat-en on 11.

Chanderpaul was lbw for the sec-ond time in as many innings toGraeme Swann.

Left-hander Chanderpaul, playingback, had made 46 when Swann’sappeal was rejected by umpire AsadRauf. But it was no surprise whenEngland captain Andrew Straussreviewed the decision.

Replays showed the ball wouldhave hit the stumps and Chanderpaulhad to go after more than two hoursat the crease featuring nine fours.

I t was a loss that would hauntDelhi Daredevils skipper VirenderSehwag for a long time asChennai Super Kings cashed in

on their luck to reach the final of thefifth season of Indian Premier Leaguein Chennai on Friday.

When a well below par MuraliVijay smashed the tournament’sfastest century to propel ChennaiSuper Kings to an imposing 222 forfive, it was all but over for Daredevils,a pre-tournament favourite.

While Vijay’s innings surelydeserved attention, what was surpris-ing was the decision making ofSehwag — not so long ago touted asone of the replacement for MahenderSingh Dhoni for a struggling TeamIndia.

While in the course of tournamentChennai Super Kings’ skipper Dhonishowed why he is considered the best,Sehwag appeared to have lost it as thetournament progressed.

In the last match, a loss againstKolkata Knight Riders, it was his deci-sion to hold back the experience ofRoss Taylor until it was all but overand his decision to go with four pac-ers came under scrutiny.

On Friday, Sehwag had the audac-ity to drop his best fast bowler — tour-nament’s leading wicket-taker MorneMorkel — for Andre Russel.

While critics may point to Russel’sall-round ability — especially when Irfan Pathan had to sit out due to injury — his credentials

are yet to be established. Sehwag then left everyone bewil-

dered with his decision to hand theball to offie Sunny Gupta who wasplaying his first IPL match this season. The youngster was duly milked — 47from three overs — as Chennai mademerry with the Delhi bowlers.

Vijay, who was run out on the lastball of the innings after scoring 113,took a mere 51 balls to reach themagic landmark when he flickedVarun Aaron off his pads behindsquare at the M A ChidambaramStadium. CSK’s total was also the high-est in this edition of the league.

While he had bludgeoned 13 fours

and four sixes before reaching the cen-tury, Vijay found the fence two moretimes following that after Daredevilsskipper Virender Sehwag invited thehosts to bat on winning the toss.

It was never an easy chase and theearly fall of David Warner andSehwag, who had dropped himself inthe batting order, only made the taskdifficult. Mahela Jayawardene foughthard but Delhi fell short by 87 runs.

Roger Federer on Fridaybacked six-time champion RafaelNadal to shatter Novak Djokovic’shistoric bid to become the first manin 43 years to hold all four GrandSlam titles.

World number one Djokovicalready has the Wimbledon, USOpen and Australian Open crownsin his possession and a first FrenchOpen triumph in two weeks’ timewould make him the first man sinceRod Laver in 1969 to complete thesweep. But Federer believes that it isNadal, chasing an unprecedentedseventh Roland Garros title, whowill be making history here, and notthe Serb. “Rafa is the favourite forme,” said Federer, the 2009 champi-on in Paris. “I think he lost only twosets between Rome, Monte Carlo, and Barcelona, so that’s a prettygood start. “Then he’s playing for hisseventh title, so no discussion. We’recrazy to even talk about this. Somepeople might say he’s not thefavourite, but to me he’s thefavourite. I know how incredible hecan be here in Roland Garros.

“As for Novak, with all his resultslately, he’s one of the big favourites.Likewise for me with everything Iaccomplished. But for me it wouldbe Rafa, Novak, and me in thirdposition.”

Of the seven men to win all thefour majors in their careers, onlyDon Budge and Laver (twice) haveheld all four at the same time. SinceLaver’s 1969 achievement, only PeteSampras, Federer and Nadal havehad opportunities to complete anon-calendar year Grand Slam. AFP

Several areas in Ahmedabad haveboomed wonderfully in the recentyears. The prices of flats and individ-ual houses have hiked up enormously, giving an added advantage to the buy-ers and sellers both. The propertyprices of high rise flats in Prahladnagar,Judges Bungalows and surroundingareas have reached 1 crore. At the sametime, huge bungalows are available inthese rates in Bopal, Ghuma, Silaj, S.P.ring road and other new locations faroff. Ahmedabad also had a diversifiedsection in terms of rates varying due tothe proximity of distance and basicand ultra amenities in and around thearea.

The real estate market inAhmedabad is on a high. Being thelargest city of Gujarat and the seventhlargest Metropolitan City of India,Ahmedabad proves to be a viableoption for investing in properties of allkind Moreover, Ahmedabad proves tobe an excellent destination for invest-ment in Industrial Property due tothriving Chemical and PharmaceuticalIndustries. Those interested inCommercial property can also chooseAhmedabad as a profitable avenue asmany foreign companies have set uptheir sales offices in Ahmedabad in therecent years. The city's infrastructure isin its modernization phase and thecompletion of Sardar Sarovar Projectof dams and canals has improved thesupply of potable water and electricityfor the city, thus making investmentin properties a very profitable option.

The construction activities andnew real estate projects in Ahmedabadhave pushed property rates to newhighs. As a location of property invest-ment, Ahmedabad certainly has goodprospects in store for prospectiveinvestors. Ahmedabad being a big cityand expanding day by day buildershere get more opportunities to buildmore hi-tech buildings. As the entrymarket for real estate builders isopened with easy entry, real estatemarket faces cut-to-cut competition, and hence customers and investorsare benefited from the same. This sce-nario appeals to be a customer drivenmarket Out of many metro cities, thereal estate market in Ahmedabad isbooming since last decade. This realestate market is top choice forInvestors and NRIs. They are confi-dent about the stability and higherreturns of the investments. Land rateshave hiked like anything in areas likeSatellite, C.G. Road, Vastrapur andS.G. Highway with never endingdemand for residential and commer-cial lands. The hiked prices of fuel, downfall of the stock markets recent-ly has not affected the real estate mar-ket at all. This proves that the realestate market in Ahmedabad is a goodchoice to make a long- term invest-ments. The city has grown largely andthe limits have been redefined now.AUDA (Ahmedabad UrbanDevelopment Authority) limits havebeen increased to make sure that thenew property construction is donesystematically and that the basic infra-structural development of roads, streetlights, water, drainage, gardensis available to the residents of theexpanding city.

The mercury is rising and peopleare thinking up ways to keeptheir homes cool. With con-

stant load-shedding turning on thatair-conditioner could be a rarity. There are ingenious ways to keepyour home cool the natural and sim-ple way.

ROOF: Since about a third of the heat shinesin through the roof, painting the roofwith a reflective coating could har-ness the heat. Dark coloured roofsabsorb more heat so painting the roofin light shades can stall the heatbuild-up to a certain extent.

WINDOWS: About 40 percent of heat comes inthrough the windows. Reflective win-dow coatings are one way of keepingoff the heat. Besides cutting off the

glare from the sun, this kind of suncontrol protects the upholstery, drapes and carpets from fading.

WALLS: Although the colour of walls is not assignificant as that of the roof, itaffects the degree of heat coming in.Walls painted in light shades weath-er the heat better on sides whichreceive maximum sunlight.

PLANTS: A natural way to keep your home andsurroundings cool and fresh is withplants. Potted plants located strategi-cally inside the house and kept con-stantly wet and watered can consid-erably reduce heat indoors. Well-located deciduous trees on the easternand western sides of the house are asensible option. A moist lawn can alsocool the place around the house.

LOUVRES: The adjustable slats of modern lou-vres are making them more popularthan traditional shades. Louvres canhave either horizontal or vertical slatsand can be installed from the insideor the outside of windows.

MATS: Ethnic mats woven from 'khus' rootsare a natural way of keeping thehome cool through the summer. However, the mats have to be kept

constantly moist for a greater coolingeffect.

SHADES: Both exterior and interior shades areeffective in staving off the harsh sun-light. Before deciding on the kinds ofshading options, consider the long-term or short term use as well as theventilation aspect. Exterior shadesinclude awnings and canopies, shut-ters and louvres. Awnings are the bestbet considering they block directheat.

SUMMERMAKEOVER

'Cement' - a building block of ever lasting homes

Here are some tips for a cool and fresh home this summer

Crystals are useful toenergize any area ofyour home. So, to

clear away any unwantedenergies it is essential toclean them regularly.Crystals and gemstonesshould always be cleansedbefore being used for anysort of healing or therapywork. Crystals absorb a widerange of vibrations, rightfrom electricity and magnet-ism to sound - even emo-tions. They absorb vibra-tions, be they positive ornegative, from the environ-ment. However, there are afew crystals which do notabsorb or store negative ener-gies and that's why they donot require any cleansing. These crystals are superseven, citrine, selenite, etc. Each new crystal should bewashed before use, with theexception of a few water-sol-uble minerals. Some of the

easy cleansing methods arewith salt and water, althoughsalt water is not good for softand porous crystals. If youare not sure about the struc-ture of the crystal it is betterto choose other methods assalt water will damage thesurface of many softerstones. It is said that saltwater is a medium for clear-ing crystal energies. Thismethod is very effective butoften it can be difficult toremove all traces of salt fromthe crystal and salt water canpercolate into the structureof a few crystals and causethem to break. Calcite, halite, opal, turquoise, micaand lots of other stones can-not be cleansed well with saltwater. Another method tocleanse crystal is to hold thestones in cold running waterand then leave them to dry.You can also use a little soapywater to cleanse the dust and

fingerprints from the crystal.Water will also cleanse yourstones of energy imbalances.

EARTH BURIAL: This is very effective way tocleanse and heal the crystal. In your garden or gardenpot, bury the crystal for fourto seven days. Do not forgetto mark the place where youbury the crystal.

SMUDGING: In this method, you do notrequire much time and effortto cleanse crystals and stonesof unwanted energy. Thismethod quickly clears thecrystals and stones. Tosmudge, pass your crystalsmany times through thesmoke of burning incense, cedar, sandalwood, juniperor sage. All these were foundto be powerful purifyingherbs. Do not use artificialincense. Clearing stone:

There are a few stones thathave the potency to clear upthe negative and unwantedenergies. These are amethystclusters, quartz crystal clus-ters, and selenite. For twodays leave the crystal whichhas to be cleared on theclearing stone.

SOUND: The resonant sound of a tun-

ing fork or a bell vibrates thestructure of crystal and allowsthem to quickly get rid offany negative energy.Whatever method youchoose according to yourcrystal, the prime thing is toclean the crystal on time forbest possible benefits. Anddon't forget to clean large dec-orative crystals around yourhome from time to time.

Crystal CareCrystals absorb a wide range of vibrations, right from

electricity and magnetism to sound - therefore, it is vital to cleanse them from time to time in order

to increase their efficacy

NEW YORK Thirty-three years after asix-year-old boy went missing in NewYork, the police made a break-through in the case on Thursday byarresting a man who confessed to ab-ducting and choking him to death.Etan Patz’s disappearance from aschool bus stop in Lower Manhattanin May 1979 was, until now, one ofAmerica’s most baffling cases, spark-ing a nationwide outreach campaignfor such children.

The case is known to an entiregeneration of New Yorkers and ush-ered in an era of anxiety about leavingkids unsupervised. Pedro Hernandez, 51, alsorevealed in his videotaped confes-sion that he put the body in a plasticbag and dumped it in the trash.

Etan’s remains have not beenfound to date. Hernandez, whosemotive for killing Etan is not knownyet, would be charged with second-degree murder.

TOKYO First, there was a daring break-out up a sheer rock wall and through abarbed wire fence. Then there wereweeks on the run, in which the fugitiveeluded capture and at times appearedto taunt his pursuers with carefree frol-ics in the sea. But now, more than twomonths after it slipped out of an aquar-ium, Japan's fugitive penguin is backin captivity following its capture inthe capital on Thursday night.

The Humboldt penguin, one of135 kept at Tokyo Sea Life Park , was re-captured after 82 days of freedom thathad even seen it outwit Japan's coast-guard, reports The Guardian.

Prompted by a stream of sightingreports, staff rushed to the Edo-gawariver, where the young bird was idlingaway a balmy Thursday afternoon, seemingly unaware that its adventurewas coming to an end.

As its captors approached, the crea-ture dived into the water and emerged

onto the opposite river bank about anhour later. Undeterred, aquarium stafftried again, this time approaching thestartled bird slowly -- taking some 20minutes to close in the final five me-ters (16 feet) -- before jumping on it.

The one-year-old bird, known on-ly as Penguin No. 337 and not yet oldenough to display physical sexual fea-tures, rushed into the water in sur-prise, but was subdued and taken backinto custody. AGENCIES

» Frisking for our own safetyThis is with reference to the cover story‘Respected CM, my name is Zahira and Iam not a terrorist’ (AM, May 25). I amconcerned about the remarks made bythe guard, but getting frisked should notbe an issue for Zahira or anyone else. It’sthe basic security procedure all overIndia. I have travelled to various parts inIndia and at all places, the security proce-dures are the same. These checks are forour safety. So we should co-operaterather than make a huge issue of it. Herclaims that nobody is ill-treated at AjmerShareef is incorrect. During my visit tothe shrine in 2011, I was conversing withan acquaintance in Gujarati. When itwas our turn to enter the dargah, a manasked us to shell out money. When wequestioned him, he told us that ‘this isnot our Gujarat where everything is free’.I was shocked to hear this. We need tostop thinking on basis of caste, regionand religion. Only then can we achievetrue secularism.

Shruti Saxena, Chandkheda

This is in reference to your cover story.Zahira Ghoghari has complained to theCM on being frisked by the securityguards at Akshardham temple. She wasfrisked, quite appropriately, by thewomen security personnel. One fails tounderstand what the lady is complainingabout. Is she suggesting that her commu-nity should be exempted from the securi-ty checks? I think a responsible newspa-per such as Mirror shouldn’t have givensuch a prominent coverage to a pettyissue which is blatantly communal.

» Relax taxes on fuelThe rise in price of cooking gas, CNGand petrol has inflicted unbearable bur-den on the common man. Instead ofgiving the people a respite from theprice rise, the government seems to haveincreased the frequency. The govern-ment must take immediate measures, like relaxing taxes on fuel, to curb infla-tion and save the country from thenightmare of price rise. With incomeremaining the same and prices rising sooften, meeting expenses is one of themost difficult tasks these days.

Abhirup Basu, Satellite

Constant hikes in fuel prices and costs ofday-to-day commodities are having a massive impact on people. Though min-isters continue to assure us that theprices will be slashed, this has not beenthe case. Opposition parties will holdtoken protests against the hike, but ulti-mately, there will be no relief for us andwe will have to keep tightening our belt.

Kavitha Srikanth, ahmedabadmirror.com

I wonder why people are cribbing aboutthe petrol hike. This was expected sincecrude oil prices have moved up substan-tially in the last six months. Today, everyone is talking about the rising costof travelling by cars, but no one is con-sidering other alternatives. What abouta car pool? It will not only help savemoney but also reduce traffic. Why dopeople create a hue and cry when petrolprices go up when they are willing tospend huge sums of money on shopping?

Power dressing as new code

Blame gamesover debatesThis refers to GautamPatel’s article titled‘In search of Ambed-kar’s Parliament’ (AM, May 18). I amsure many readerswill join the columnistin his anguish overthe degeneration ofthe standards of ourelected representa-tives. Most of themhave only one agen-da, to garner votes. The debate over theAmbedkar cartoonbrought to mind theTheatre of the Absurd.Instead of a civil de-bate over the issue, our politicians camedown to a petty blamegame and a simple so-lution, the removal ofthe cartoon. Does thismean that one willhave to seek priorsanction everytimeone writes about his-torical figures? Canwe not learn, teach ordiscuss Ambedkar,Shivaji and other suchleaders without per-mission?

READERS’FEEDBACK

Clothes are not just about gender and identity, they are about what they allow you to do. Today, women in power dressing wear pants while the metrosexual man can wear pink with panache

Y ou think therefore you are,you are what you eat but youare often judged by what youwear. Dressing is a code ofcommunication. A few days

ago, a new minister for culture inFrance, (a young woman) wore jeans tooffice inviting criticism from the oppo-sition even though most agreed thatthe jeans looked stylish. Denim thatwas part of foreign cloth to be burntduring the Swadeshi Movement istoday being largely produced inAhmedabad and exported! Once jeanswere a symbol of the proletariat work-ers, today, they are a fashion statement.A few years ago, socialist heavyweightJacques Lang was denied entry to theNational Assembly in France becausehe did not wear a tie, much in the sameway as M F Husain was denied entry toa colonial style club in India as he didnot wear shoes.

Dressing also means a balance ofconcealing and revealing. The point isthat there can be no moral absolutes indeciding how much skin to reveal. Butone point is important: covering isrelated to power. In art for example, slaves were represented with lessclothes. By revealing more of the body, the vulnerability of the object wasemphasised.

So today, power dressing hasbecome a new code. Politicians usedress codes to convey meanings. DrBabasaheb Ambedkar wore westernclothes to drive a point of his identity. His clothes were cut and tailoredwhereas Gandhiji wore loose cloth forfluidity. The former’s clothes indicatedmasculine power whereas the latter’sindicated feminine vulnerability.

In India too we see dressing codesof politicians as part of the messagethey want to convey. Chidambaramwears his regional identity, Kapil Sibal

likes to show his urbane sophisticatedstyle in suits, Sonia Gandhi’s drapesshow control as her sarees mostlylooked starched, pinned and pleated. The fall of the drape is tamed unlikewhat Gandhiji wore.

The first woman to discard the tra-ditional garb and wear the equivalentof pants was none other than Rani ofJhansi. In a televised interview, writerCatherine Clement in her new novelbased on Rani of Jhansi, describes howher act of discarding her traditionaldrape in favour of the warrior clotheswas both a political and a sociological-ly courageous act. Clothes are not justabout gender and identity, they areabout what they allow you to do.Today, women in power dressing wear

pants while the metrosexual man canwear pink with panache.

Thus clothes also convey an ideo-logical stance and a philosophicalworld view. While western soldierswore tight clothes indicating controland tension, traditional Asian martialarts practitioners and Samurais woreflowing clothes that indicated theirstate of total relaxation.

The human body is not just a sub-ject of art, it is a highly politicisedobject for national, regional and gen-der identities. It is then a ‘grammar ofseeing’. There can thus be no justifica-tion for attacking a woman who choos-es to wear clothes that reveal someskin. That is her choice as it is also agrammar of ‘being.’

about the renowned detective, including The Hound of the

Baskervilles is at the centre of aplanning battle due to which itcould be partly demolished tobe turned into eight homes.

A High Court judge was toldthat Undershaw, located in afour-acre site near Haslemere inSurrey, had been seriously neg-lected by its owners, who viewit as a ‘development opportu-nity’.

The move has been

1 I am a 26-year-oldmarried man. My wifeand I enjoy sex every day. Before our marriage herbreast size was 32. Now it has reduced to 30.5. Isthis normal? I’ve neverheard about breast reduction. Does she need a medical check-up?Please advise. I am curious about whetheryou sleep with a measuringtape by your bedside. When a woman is sexually excited, her breasts get enlarged a bit.Otherwise, they return to normal size. Anyway, howdoes it matter as long as youfind them attractive?

2 I am 19-years-old. Inthe past two years mypartner has stimulatedme using his fingerstwice or thrice; it was not very deep. We neverhad intercourse. Am I still a virgin? If his fingers did not enter the vagina, you have not splityour hymen. Even if the hymen was split, you are still a virgin as you did nothave intercourse.

3 I was supposed to getmarried this month. Unfortunately, a closeaunt of my fiancee diedand our marriage hasbeen delayed by threemonths. I have alreadyhad sex with her multi-ple times. I used a con-dom when we had sex. However, on one occasionthe condom I was wear-ing tore. Now my fianceeis not getting her period.I’m not sure if this is theresult of the stress she isundergoing at home or if she is pregnant. If shegets pregnant before weget married, it will createa huge problem as ourfamilies will not approve. Please suggest a solution.Get a urine pregnancy test kit from a chemist to checkfor pregnancy. If the kitshows two pink lines, the result in positive. Consult a gynaecologist.

SURFACETENSION

Human body does not considerthe skin as vital organ like theheart, lungs or the brain. Sowhen the body faces a crisis

— such as dehydration, fatigue dueto stress or lack of vitamins in theblood stream — the skin is the firstto show symptoms, as its crisisalways gets addressed last.

French skin expert JulienMoignard from Kéraskin Estheticsanalysed the skin of a correspon-dent. The test was done with an instrument equipped with a microscope. It measured lipid levels, hydration, wrinkle onset, skin sensi-tivity and pigmentation. Moignard,Nina Madnani, dermatologist, andLaura D’souza, skin aesthetician, share secrets that can keep your skin looking young.

LIPIDSLipids are essentials oils that aremade of proteins, cholesterol andfatty acids, secreted by the pores. They are present in the uppermostlayer of the skin and form a protec-tive barrier which holds in moistureand keeps out dirt and impurities.Babies have high amounts of lipidsin the skin. As you age, the lipid formation in the skin slows down.

MY SCORE Although I rarely applymoisturiser — and use a face wash ora soap to clean my face, dependingon what I can get hold of at that moment — I scored 04 on a scale of 01-06, indicating a healthy levelof lipids. A score of 05 or 06 wouldhave indicated oily skin and a score

or 01 or 02 would mean dry skin.

REMEDY Julian says lipid secretion is theresult of eating proteins such as fish, eggs, chicken, paneer and balanced amounts of good fats, such as cheese, yoghurt andnuts. Crash-dieting severely impacts lipiddevelopment, resulting in duller lookingskin. Applying a moisturiser regularly protects the lipid glands.

HYDRATIONThe amount of fluid in your skin isimportant for its health. The fluidsdon’t come only from the quantityof water you drink during the daybut also the amount of antioxidantsyou consume. The ability of the skin to repair and produce new cellsdepends a lot on hydration. A well-hydrated skin is able to producefresh cells more efficiently. Lack ofsleep interferes with hydration andcell renewal. Which is why, whenyou sleep well, people notice theglow immediately as your skin has been forming new cells.

MY SCORE I drank the previousnight and had slept for less than fivehours. Moreover, before meeting Julian, I was sweating in the heatand had gone without having waterfor over four hours. This showed immediately on my skin and I scoreda very low 01 on a scale of 01-06.

REMEDY In hot and humid weather, youmust drink at least three litres of water in a day. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Eboost cell repair and formation. Mangoes, papaya, kiwis and almonds are richsources of Vitamin E. Oranges, strawber-ries, grapes and pomegranates are abundant in Vitamin C.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they are diuretic in nature, causing your body to lose water.

WRINKLESWrinkles are formed when the skincells die faster than the body canreplace them. Lack of hydration oversustained periods often leads to thiscondition. Indentation occurs wherethere is constant and repetitivemovement of the facial muscles, such as the glabellar-frown linesbetween the eyebrows, crow feet atthe corner of the eyes, forehead linesand nasal wrinkles. In those who do not wear sun glasses, and have

a constant frown, these indentationsbecome pronounced wrinkles. Newevidence of wrinkles has been foundin young people who do heavyweights in the gym and grimace during workouts.

MY SCORE I am 29, with a youngskin. I scored 01, which showed thatI do not have wrinkles yet. However, there are signs to indicate their onsetbecause of my lifestyle.

REMEDY Hydrate your skin well, wearsunglasses when outside, avoid smokingand use anti-aging products under the guidance of your dermatologist.

SENSITIVITYBlame your genes if you have a sensitive skin. Such skin suffers froman uncomfortable sensation whenmake-up, soap, cleansers, etc., comein contact with it. The sensationdoes not leave any visible marks, such as redness, but is unpleasant. A low score indicates low sensitivity, while a high score indicates high

sensitivity to external factors.

MY SCORE I scored 01, whichmeans my skin is not sensitive.

REMEDY People with sensitive skin mustuse sunscreen while going out as protec-tion against rashes and sun burns. Avoidusing toners which contain alcohol as theycan irritate the skin. Wear oil-free and hypoallergenic make-up. Don’t apply cosmetics over broken skin. Use productsspecifically meant for sensitive skin.

PIGMENTATION Human skin colours have beenclassified into six types. Peopleunder Type One, like Caucasians, are very fair. Type Six people haveextremely pigmented skin. Indianshave a wide range of skin tones andfall between Type Three and TypeSix. Type of skin tone defines yourresponse to tanning and injuriessuch as burns, and proneness to skincancer. For instance, a Type Threewill hardly tan even after staying outin the sun for hours. The reason isthat this type produces very fewmelanocytes (melanin-producingcells which define the skin colour).

On the other hand, a Type Sixwill tan within 20 to 30 minutes ofstaying out in the sun, as that skinproduces more melanocytes in reaction to the Sun’s UV rays.

MY SCORE I fall between Type Fourand Six.

REMEDY People who fall under TypeThree or below must wear protective skingear such as long sleeves and sunscreen if staying outdoors for long. Type Four and above can wear protection to avoid tanning. However, they need not worrymuch about tanning as it reverses within a few weeks.

Ranvir-Konkona hit a rocky patch

T he buzz in the B-town is thattalented Konkona Sen Sharma andRanvir Shorey’s two-year-old marriage may have hit a rocky

patch. While there have been whispers doing

the rounds, what may have added fuel tothe speculations is the couple’s recentappearance at the screening for Arjun.According to eye-witnesses, Ranvir arrivedearly and took his seat in the auditorium.Konkona arrived a little later, but insteadof joining her husband, chose to sit sevenrows away from him.

The couple did not even as much asacknowledge each other or share

pleasantries during the intermission. Infact, after the show was over, around11pm, Konkona and Ranvir left separate-ly in their own vehicles.

Guests at the screening were rathertaken aback with the lack of communica-tion between the couple. One of themtold the reporter, “The most shocking partwas that both of them did not even lookat each other at the entire screening andthe time they were at the same venue.”

While Konkona did not respond to ourmessages, Ranvir said, “We are a couple, not conjoined twins. We cannot possiblycome and go everywhere together.Besides, it is none of your business.”

However, sources close to the coupleinsist, the marriage may be going throughsome serious wear and tear.

The couple raised eyebrows by sitting separately at a film screeningKunal M Shah @timesgroup.com

Dutt’s manager broughtto his knees for KangnaA remorseful Dharam Oberoi turns up on the sets to meet the actress

R eeling under the twinblows of Ram GopalVarma and then SanjayDutt’s friends lashingout against his high-

handedness, the actor’s managerDharam Oberoi has now steppedinto damage control mode, trying to right all the wrong he has reportedly done.

And it began with a quickvisit to Kangna Ranaut, who had borne the brunt of his furyduring the making of Rascals.

On Wednesday, Ranaut wasrather surprised to see Oberoi at Mehboob Studios, Mumbai, where she was doing a photoshoot. It was beyond her wildestimagination. A source present atthe studio told Mirror, “Kangnadid not snub Oberoi. Rather, shemet him graciously. The twochatted for nearly 20 minutes.”

When contacted, Dharamadmitted he met Kangna. “Sheis a friend. I had gone to meetAjay Devgn, who was shootingfor his film Son of Sardar in thesame studio and I met Kangnathere since she was also present,” he said.

Ribbed about whether he met

her to clarify his stance aboutRamu accusing him of bootingher out from Department, Oberoiflashed his old temper onceagain: “Have you seen the film? The girl’s role was s***. Whywould Kangna ever do such arole? Kangna was never going to do this film. Let barking dogs keep barking.”

However, according to thesource, Oberoi looked far from

his usual super-confident selfwhen he spoke to the actress.“He was quite humble. He maynot have said it in so manywords but it was clear he wastrying to convince Kangna tolet bygones be bygones.Quite unlike him,” thesource said.

It is learnt Oberoi wasKangna’s manager for afew months before thetwo parted ways profes-sionally during the making of Rascals (secondhalf of 2011). Apparently,Oberoi had mismanagedher dates and there werealso rumours about SanjayDutt being upset with her.Nonetheless, the parting wasugly. “Those were the dayswhen Dutt was quite close to Oberoi. Now it seems thatDutt is distancing himself from him,” a well wisher of Dutt told Mirror.

Meanwhile, Dutt definitelyseems to be keen to wrenchhimself free from Oberoi’sgrasp. Else whywould he havesigned KaranJohar’s film opposite Kangnaonly recently?

Directors need to pullup their socks beforethey approach meA talented actor. But not quite the face of a film.

That’s what Sharman Joshi has been perceivedas so far. But that’s going to change withVidhu Vinod Chopra’s Ferrari Ki Sawaari.Looking at the big posters sprawling at

Chopra’s office, Sharman lashes out at those whonever considered him ‘hero’ enough. “It was their lackof vision. They don’t understand cinema. The notionwill change now because of a magical producer —Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He has put his money where hismouth is. He did not simply tell me that I am a goodactor and patted my back. When the opportunityarose, he cast me in a film. This required guts,” saysSharman and adds, “This is my first solo film. Therewere opportunities in the past but I chose not to be a part of them. I auditioned for this role 30-40 times. If I like the script, I can try even 100 times for peoplewho are sure about me.”

THE JOURNEY UNFOLDSIn fact, Sharman reveals that his journey unfolded infront of his eyes the day he started off his film career.“I knew there would be this one important filmthat'll change my box office standing. The star in meis going to come in play with Ferrari Ki Sawaari. Thebox office figures will talk. There is only one maverickproducer I know of – Vidhu. Most others don’t have acreative bend of mind. They lackjudgement about the rightactor or director. Theyfail to back talent,” the

actor complains. However he believes that this filmwill turn the tables. “There will be producers liningup to sign me. I won’t be surprised,” he predicts.

It wasn’t that he never got an offer for solo herofilms. But Sharman never chose to be a part of thoseprojects. “I have only done films which I loved. Peoplein this industry feel that if someone isn’t signing toomany projects, if they are offered a psycho solo herofilm, he’ll do it. But I will still not do the film if I don’tlike the script,” Sharman explains.

SHOW ME THE SCRIPT, PLEASE“I want to tell them ki please pull up your socks, raisethe bar and get me a good script. My focus is not tobe part of a solo film. It’s about being part of a finescript. It’s really about being a part of great cinema. Not just today but forever,” claims the actor.

And since Chopra is the one who had alwaysoffered him good scripts, Sharman is full of gratitudefor the filmmaker. “How many people in his positionwould offer me a film as important as Ferrari Ki

Sawaari? He had all possible options. I always knewthat a film like this would come my way. Though it happened a little late in life,” says he.

Interestingly, filmmaker Raju Hirani had reportedly offered him a film in the loo. When asked,Sharman laughs and clarifies, “I was walking out of a multiplex where Raju had come for the promos ofMunna Bhai Chale Amerika. I saw him but didn’t wantto disturb him. On my way out, he called out to meand he told me that he had something for me. Myeyes popped out. Several months later, again in a looof the same multiplex, I met him. The third time wemet was again in the loo. Finally we met in an officeand he offered me 3 Idiots.”

And though the film had catapulted Sharman’scareer, he had refrained from signing projects. “I just picked up Ferrari Ki Sawaari,” smiles Sharman.

And that’s not because he is picky or strict. “Thestandards are low. The problem isn’t me. They need to raise the bar. Producers need to pay the writersenough so that they can sit in peace and work on agood script. It has to begin there. Everything else willfall into place. It is not easy to make quality stuff. Youneed time for it and it is crucial that they are paidwell,” says the actor.

So was it the reported huge signing amounts hehad asked for that kept the filmmakers away? “It is apersonal matter. However, I am simply saying that ifyou can, pay me. If you can’t, don’t. I can’t changewhat people think or say. For me, the script is the onlycriterion. If I want to do a film, I’ll do it even withoutmoney,” states Sharman.

DADDY’S LITTLE GIRLShifting focus to personal life, Sharman says he hasintentionally kept his family away from the lime-light. But when it comes to his six-year-old daugh-ter Khyana, he says, “I am her favourite actor. She said this to me two days ago. She has start-ed forming opinions now and at a photoshoot, she helped me pick the right pictures.”

Coming back to films, Sharman boaststhat he can fly a jet faster than the Ferrari

he drove. “I have clocked 200 kms/hr.It’s exciting. I like fast cars and

bikes,” reveals the actor and thensoftly adds, “Though in real life I drive a normal SUV. I don’t do so many films to be able to afforda fancy car.”

But surely, this film is going to change all that.

LOOPRULES» Connect adjacent dots with verticalor horizontal lines, creating a singleloop (Fig A).» Crossovers or branches are not allowed (As shown by dotted lines in Fig B).» Numbers in the puzzle indicate thenumber of lines that should surround it,while empty cells may be surroundedby any number of lines.» You can’t draw lines around zeros.» Each puzzle has just one unique solution.

How to begin: Example (Fig A) – Beginwith the zero next to 3. Since no linescan be drawn around zero, mark crossesaround it, as shown. Now there is across in one space around 3. So weknow the three lines of 3 can only bedrawn in the remaining three spaces.Next, these lines can only be extendedin one direction each. Continue, usingthe same logic. Hints: Keep eliminating possibilities bymarking crosses in spaces betweendots where a line isn’t possible, i.e, ifyou have already completed requiredlines or where a line extension may cre-ate a branch or cause a dead-end (Fig B)

Her taking over as judge of X Factor createdbuzz and so did her walk out on Day OneBritney Spears has laughed off

claims that she stormed off of XFactor after one of the contestantsbutchered her song. The Sun hasposted a photo — seemingly

taken from the audience of the audition— with Britney’s chair abandoned andempty. She claims she was simply takinga break, though a contestant could clear-ly still be seen onstage. Perhaps, some-body needs to explain to her the rulesregarding ‘appropriate times to take abreak when you are judging X Factor?’

Thirty-year-old star walked off the setafter one of the contestants performed aless-than-impressive rendition of her hitsingle Hold It Against Me. Britney decided that that was as good a time asany to take a break and left SimonCowell, La Reid and Demi Lovato tojudge another four contestants withouther. If Britney Spears is going to baulk atthe first sign of someone ruining a

Britney Spears song on X Factor, then she’s going to find out, pretty quickly, thatshe has a very rocky roadahead of her.

However, she denies having walked off because of theearlier performance and posted a message on Twitter saying“Britneywalksoff??? Lol was justtaking a little break people. I amhaving the Best time!!!”

Britney seems to be showing signs ofenjoying herself though and took timeout to praise the people of Texas for theirmusical prowess, saying “Texas has alot of talent - seriously! LovingTheXFactorUsa auditions so far...”She might be enjoying herself, how-ever, but given that she’s earning areported $15 million to appear onthe series, that was one pricey teabreak she took.
