Reza Aslan

Reza Aslan is a writer at home in both the worlds of fiction and non-fiction. He is, as well, a scholar of religions—an expert not only in his own faith of Islam, but also in the panoply of religious faith across the world. His ability to interpret and articulate the commonalities and conflicts of religions as they intersect with broader issues of culture and politics has made him a familiar face and voice to American readers and television audiences in recent years. Aslan’s analysis and commentary for programs such as NPR’s Marketplace and CBS News, his acclaimed book on Islam and countless articles in respected newspapers and opinion journals have done much to enlighten the points of view of many struggling to understand the world of today.

Aslan is the author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution and Future of Islam, which has been translated into more than a dozen lan-guages. His newest book, How to Win a Cosmic War: Confronting Radical Islam will be published by Random House in the spring of 2009. In addition to his regular roles as commentator and analyst with NPR and CBS News, Aslan has appeared on Meet The Press, Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Daily Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, The Colbert Report, Anderson Cooper 360°, and Nightline. He has written for The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Slate, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Chicago Tribune, The Nation, and many other publications.

Born in 1972 in Tehran, Iran, Aslan came to the United States with his family during the 1979 Iranian revolution. He received a bach-elor of arts degree in religion from Santa Clara University. He has since earned a master of theo-logical studies degree from Harvard University and a master of fine arts degree in fiction from

the University of Iowa. Until recently, Aslan was both Visiting Assistant Professor of Islamic and Middle East Studies at the University of Iowa and the Truman Capote Fellow in Fiction at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He is currently an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of California, Riverside, and a doctoral candidate in sociology of religions at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also a research as-sociate at the University of Southern California’s Center on Public Diplomacy.

Aslan has served as a legislative assistant for the Friends’ Committee on National Legislation in Washington D.C. and was elected president of Harvard’s Chapter of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, a United Nations organi-zation committed to solving religious conflicts throughout the world. He serves on advisory boards of both the Council of Foreign Relations and the Ploughshares Fund, which distributes grants to further peace and diplomacy through-out the world.

Editor, author, commentator, moderator, Episcopal vestry member, family man—Jon Meacham wears many hats in his busy life and career. Named managing editor of Newsweek at the age of 29 in 1998, he has been called “one of the most influential editors in the news magazine business” by The New York Times. In recent years he has become a familiar face to television news audiences. Forthright about his own religious faith, he is an influential analyst of the complexities of politics, religion and culture as they intersect in the modern world.

Born in 1969 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Meacham is an alumnus of the McCallie School in his hometown and the University of the South in nearby Sewanee. He graduated summa cum laude in English literature from Sewanee, where he was also salutatorian and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He worked as a reporter for The Chattanooga Times and then as an editor at The Washington Monthly before joining Newsweek as a national affairs writer. As the current editor of the magazine and its website, he is responsible for day-to-day editorial operations and has also authored many of the publication’s cover stories—including those exploring the controversy over Mel Gibson’s The Passion, gun ownership in America and the sexual abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church. His cover story on Ronald Reagan was a sweep-ing tribute to one of the most popular but also controversial presidents.

Meacham’s long interest in history and current affairs has manifested itself in a number of critically acclaimed nonfiction works. In 2004, his Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship explored the wartime rela-tionship of Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The book made The New York Times

best-seller list and brought Meacham national fame as an author of historical literature. In 2006, his American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation examined the intrica-cies of the solutions America’s founding fathers created with respect to religious freedom and government. That book also made the Times list, as did his latest work, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, published in 2008.

Meacham is a frequent guest and com-mentator on such television shows as The Charlie Rose Show, The Today Show, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, The O’Reilly Factor, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. He is a contributing editor for The Washington Monthly and has written for The New York Times Book Review and The Los Angeles Times Book Review.

Jon Meacham is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves as a “Global Leader for Tomorrow” of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He is a member of the Board of Regents of The University of the South and the Leadership Council of the Harvard Divinity School.

Tonight’s moderator is Tommy P. Baer, chair of the First Freedom Center, a position he has held since 2001. The Center’s mission is to increase understanding and respect for religious freedom through its educational initiatives,

building on the legacy that began in Richmond with the adoption of Thomas Jefferson’s Statute for Religious Freedom by the Virginia General Assembly in 1786 and now recognized as an international human right.

Baer earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond in 1960 and a J.D. degree from Georgetown Law Center. He served as an Assistant United States Attorney from 1964-1967, is a past president of the Henrico County Bar Association, and is currently a Commissioner in Chancery.

Board of Volunteerism Advisory Committee, a board member of the State Council of Higher Education, and was appointed to the Virginia –Israeli Advisory Board by Governor Tim Kaine. He serves on the boards of the World Affairs Council, Virginia Poverty Law Center, Richmond Historic Riverfront Foundation and others. He is a partner of the Richmond law firm of Canfield, Baer & Heller, LLP.

As the international president of B’nai B’rith from 1994-1998 Baer met with the leaders of 35 countries on the issues of Middle East peace, anti-semitism, terrorism, and other subjects.

Baer has received extensive recognition for his civic service, including awards from the Virginia State Bar, Richmond Bar Association, Richmond Jewish Community Federation, the Virginia General Assembly and the University of Richmond.

With the inauguration of America’s 44th president just three days away, here’s a look at his views on the role of faith in politics, excerpted from his “Call to Renewal” keynote address delivered June 28, 2006 in Washington, DC.

I think we make a mistake when we fail to acknowledge the power of faith in people’s lives—in the lives of the American people—and I think it’s time that we join a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern, pluralistic democracy.

And if we’re going to do that, then we first need to understand that Americans are a religious people. 90 percent of us believe in God, 70 percent affiliate themselves with an organized religion, 38 percent call themselves committed Christians, and substantially more people in America believe in angels than they do in evolution.

…secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering into the public square. Frederick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Williams Jennings Bryant, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King—indeed, the majority of great reformers in American history—were not only motivated by faith, but repeatedly used religious language to argue for their cause. So to say that men and women should not inject their “personal morality” into public policy debates is a practical absurdity. Our law is by definition a codification of moral-ity, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.

Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values.

…a sense of proportion should also guide those who police the boundaries between church and state. Not every mention of God in public is a breach to the wall of separation—context matters. It is doubtful that children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance feel oppressed or brain-washed as a consequence of muttering the phrase “under God.” I didn’t. Having voluntary student prayer groups use school property to meet should not be a threat, any more than its use by the High School Republicans should threaten Democrats.

No matter how religious they may or may not be, people are tired of seeing faith used as a tool of attack. They don’t want faith used to be-little or to divide. They’re tired of hearing folks deliver more screed than sermon. Because in the end, that’s not how they think about faith in their own lives.

…before I went to bed I said a prayer of my own. It’s a prayer I think I share with a lot of Americans. A hope that we can live with one another in a way that reconciles the beliefs of each with the good of all. It’s a prayer worth praying, and a conversation worth having in this country in the months and years to come.

Richmond’s Role In The EstablishmentOf American Religious Freedom

There are currently well over 800 religious congregational units in the Richmond area,

representing many of the world’s major religious traditions.

In Virginia, as the War of Independence ap-proached, the Church of England had become entrenched in a position of power and was having an increasing influence over political affairs in Virginia. Nine of the 13 colonies had an estab-lished “official” state religion. Thomas Jefferson was profoundly convinced in the importance of individual freedom of religion and freedom from religion. He felt this was the best guarantee that the religious intolerance and bloodshed seen in many European countries would not be exported to America.

In 1777, Jefferson drafted An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom. In 1779, he became Governor and introduced the act into the legislature. However, strong opposition from the primarily Anglican “old guard” stalled the bill. An alternative bill was advanced by Patrick Henry. It proposed that Christianity become the established religion of the Commonwealth and that all denominations be given equal privileges.

Jefferson’s bill gradually collected support from Baptists, Presbyterians, freethinkers, Jews, a few Anglicans, and people who were tired of religious conflict. A dramatic speech by James Madison to the Virginia General Assembly called A Memorial and Remonstrance dramatically swayed support for Jefferson’s bill. Somewhat amended, it became law on January 16, 1786.

A key part of the act, Section II reads:Be it enacted by the General Assembly, That

no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested or burdened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, and that the same

shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.

This document served as the template for the first clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Through this legislation, religious freedom moved from being an abstract philosophical ideal to being a legally protected human right.

Religious freedom is often called the “first freedom.” The Council for America’s First Freedom was founded in Richmond in 1984 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.

The mission of the Council is to increase understanding and respect for religious freedom in diverse communities worldwide, through education about this core human value: the freedom of thought, conscience and belief.

Construction of the proposed First Freedom Center is scheduled to begin in 2009 on the site where the General Assembly passed the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The Center will provide exhibits and programs that examine America’s progress in striving for religious freedom.

Al-Hawanim

Al-Hawanim is a group of women who specialize in the performance and scholarship of music and culture from the Arab World and Middle East. Al-Hawanim has presented concerts in Atlanta, New York, Boston, and throughout Virginia.

The art music of the Arab world is one of the richest traditions of world music with a history that dates back to the 8th century and a geographical breadth that extends from the Arabian Gulf to the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The music you hear this evening is from the Mashriq or eastern Arab world and more spe-cifically is from the region encompassing the Eastern Mediterranean or Levant, including Egypt and Iraq. Referred to with the term turath, or “tradition,” this is the Arab world’s “classical” music and its musical forms, melodic modes, rhythmic patterns and instruments owe much to the Ottoman Empire, which was both a political and cultural force in this region for centuries. Like many world musics, traditional music in the Arab world consistently absorbs popular trends and the repertoire we perform this evening includes art music compositions, as well as music that is influenced by folk and popular genres and music for dance.

With the exception of music used in re-ligious rituals, Arab music is part of a tradition shared by Jews, Christians, and Muslims and these three religious communities share a long history of musical and cultural exchange that lives on today. Key to Arab musical aesthetics is the concept of tarab, which translates roughly as “ecstasy” or “enchantment.” The concept of tarab gets to the very heart of Arab music and refers to a repertoire of traditional composi-tions as well as to a style of performance that both embodies and invokes tarab. Listeners are

expected to contrib-ute to the overall atmosphere of an evening’s music by offering complemen-tary exclamations of encouragement. So, this evening at The Richmond Forum, not only do we toler-ate a less-than-silent audience, we welcome your participation!

Our instruments:'Ud - A short-necked, pear-shaped fret-

less lute, usually with eleven strings arranged in four double courses, with a fifth single bass string.

Qanun - A lap zither with seventy-five strings in triple courses, each set equipped with a set of small tuning levers that allow the strings to be retuned in the course of performance.

Darabukka or tabla - A vase-shaped ceramic drum

Daff - A large frame drumRiqq - a tambourine with heavy brass

jingles called sagat.

The musicians: Anne Rasmussen ('ud), is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at The College of William and Mary, Chair of the Middle East Studies Faculty, and Director of the William and Mary Middle Eastern Music Ensemble. Anne Elise Thomas (qanun) holds the Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Brown University, has conducted extensive research in Egypt and Jordan and currently works as Educational Program Coordinator at Jefferson Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Nicole LeCorgne (percussion) received the BA in World Music and Dance from the University of Minnesota and the MA in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. She performs and teaches inter-nationally and is working on a project in music and photography in Cairo, Egypt under the auspices of a Fulbright fellowship.
