The entire Rancho Cucamonga City Council welcomes you to the Lewis Family Playhouse at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center.

annually, broadway at the Gardens produces a high quality, high tech, high energy musical theatre experience offering one of the industry’s hottest titles for adult or general audiences. We are excited to say that this season brings RENT to the Lewis Family Playhouse, a phenomenon which is much more than a show – it is a phenomenon!

The Victoria Gardens Cultural Center is truly a fulfillment of a community dream to bring arts and culture to rancho Cucamonga in a facility that is unmatched in the region. We are extremely proud of the Lewis Family Playhouse at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center and the name it has established for itself in our community and beyond as a premiere cultural destination point. our broadway at the Gardens productions are a major part of our success.

our Playhouse, like all theatres, relies on the generous support of its patrons and its community. The Lewis Family Playhouse is fortunate to have a core group of dedicated volunteers who assist in bringing exceptional theatrical experiences to our patrons. if you have a love of the arts and are looking for a way to get involved, why not consider becoming part of our “Friends of the Playhouse?” “Friends” contribute to the Playhouse experience by volunteering their time and expertise through assisting as Front of House ushers, Ticket Takers, backstage Crew, Special event assistants, Lobby Greeters, Concessionaires and Patrons of the arts, who assist with fundraising activities. our “Friends” receive a recognition pin with years of service, individual recognition at programs and events and listing on the Playhouse’s website and in theatre playbills. in addition, our “Friends” have told us that they get to do something they love – assist the City in enhancing the theatrical experience for our patrons at the Lewis Family Playhouse.

now we invite you to sit back and enjoy the show that transformed how a generation feels about musicals, changed broadway forever, and inspired a major motion picture, as you experience RENT at the Lewis Family Playhouse!

Welcome to broadway at the Garden’s production of Jonathan Larson’s ground breaking musical, RENT, here at the Lewis Family Playhouse. RENT has been an amazing journey for our theatre. as the City continues to define and refine the offerings at the Lewis Family Playhouse, this particular theatre company is reaching the most passionate, sophisticated and adventurous of the region’s theatre-goers and artists.

our City leaders and the theatre’s management staff have a bold vision for broadway at the Gardens. it is my joy to seek out, and the good fortune to find, creative teams and performers whose talents, generosity and love of the

art propel them to join us in bringing such quality work to rancho Cucamonga and the inland empire.

art is created when there is meaningful connection between the performers and the audience. ron, Courtney, David and our entire creative and production team and cast have filled this process and this production of RENT with love, passion, empathy and immense talent.

We hope you enjoy RENT and that this performance speaks to your heart in the way it has for all of us on this side of the footlights.

Broadway at the GardensAbout

renT holds a very special place in my heart, as i was a cast member in both the 1st and 2nd national Touring companies over a decade ago. i had the privilege of working with and knowing many of the original creative team, and am pleased to say it was an experience that shaped who i am today.

The show’s message, as written by creator Jonathan Larson, “no Day but Today” lets us all

know that life is extremely precious and is to be lived to the fullest each day.

it is because of this theme that i feel so many audiences can relate to the renT experience. it is not just a story about a struggling filmmaker, a drug-addicted dancer, or a person living with aiDS.

it is a story about the human condition. it is a story about life. it is a story about community. it is a story about strength. “no Day but Today.”

Courtney CoreyCo-Director/Choreographer

i’ve been very fortunate to work in theatre since i was 12 years old. Whether being on stage, sitting in the audience or directing talent, it is the place where i feel most at home. We in the theatre have coined the phrases “theatre magic” or “the show must go on”. However behind these seemingly simple concepts is a wealth of hard work and ingenuity.

What makes these and other phrases ring true is the incredible amount of creative synergy that is required to breathe life into a single piece of theatre. First comes the vision, then the ability to engage others to believe, support and create. From the seamstress in the costume shop to the spot operator in the back of the theatre, every person is a critical component to the overall success of the team.

i want to thank my co-director/choreographer Courtney Corey and musical director David Lamoureux for their dedication to maintaining

the integrity of this piece. a special thanks to this amazing cast and entire creative team, for their hard work, commitment and overall effort to strive for excellence. Patrick Hediger and the Lewis Family playhouse support team, you are truly creating an environment that will afford talented artists the opportunity to grow, develop and master their gifts that will help them achieve their goals and dreams.

The concept of taking a musical theatre piece and stripping down the set and costumes to its barest essentials allows the actors the chance to dig deep and take the audience into a world that they must create through acting, singing and dancing. This piece shines the light on the challenges that one generation must face. However, no matter how dark the circumstances, hope and love prevails.

Ron KellumDirector

broadway at the Gardens, presents their sophomore production, Jonathan Larson’s ground-breaking musical RENT. it’s more than a show, it’s a phenomenon! each year broadway at the Gardens will produce high quality, high tech, high energy, musical theatre experience offering one of the industry’s hottest titles for adult or general audiences. Working with top-notch, Southern California based directors and designers, professional actors will take on key leading roles with local talent having the opportunity to complete the show’s cast. each year broadway at the Gardens will present a new theatrical production, responding to our patrons’ desire to experience new, interesting and exciting forms of theatrical entertainment.
