It looks like wemay have a verysimilar situationunfolding thisspring. We are see-ing high popula-tions of tent cater-pillars on a fewplants. Tent cater-pillars are not thesame species aswebworms so largenumbers of onedoes not necessarilymean large num-

bers of the other; itjust worked outthat way this year.

Tent caterpillarsfoods of choice areplums, cherries,crabapples, willowsand birch but theywill feed on manyother species if theyget hungry enough.If you are depend-ing on a fruit cropor are concernedabout the appear-ance of very largenumbers of cater-pillars on yourornamental plants,it would probablybe a good idea toscout now for signsof these pests.

Once the caterpil-lars get theirtents well estab-lished, it is very dif-ficult to controlthem with insecti-cides so early treat-ment is importantfor best success. Ifyou wish to treatafter the tents are

well-formed, youllneed to disrupt thenearly waterprooftent for the prod-ucts to be effective.

Speaking of tentdisruption, be pre-pared for whatyoull find whenyou do this.Hundreds ofinsects can be hid-den in a tent nolarger than the sizeof a cereal bowl. Ifyou are not a fan ofinsects, it can be alittle disconcerting.

There are a num-ber of insecticides(both synthetic andorganic) that willcontrol these pests.As always, pleasebe careful to readthe label and usethe product accord-ing to the instruc-tions. Reading thelabel not only pro-vides the bestopportunity forgood control of thepest, it also pro-

tects you as well asthe environment.

When a clienttells me theyreready to buy ahome, I believe itsmy job as a lenderto help guide themtoward a decisionthat is best for theirfinancial well-being,even if it meanssuggesting theyhold off on purchas-ing.

Home upkeep.Homeownershiphas costs beyond amortgage payment.Appliances fail,roofs may have tobe replaced, yardsneed to be main-tained and internaland external homerepairs may berequired. Do youhave the money oran emergency fundin place to help payfor home upkeepand improvements?

Credit. Your cred-it score does havean impact on yourmortgage loan. Ifyoure hoping to

buy a home in thenear future, talkwith a lender nowand ask about thecost associated withyour current score

versus how it mayadjust with a higherscore. Your lendercan also share ideason how you may beable to improveyour credit score.

Dear Pat: Asmall kitchen canbe instantly reno-vated at little costwith paint. Here isa great fix withouthaving to replacethe cabinets.Choose a color thathas a light, brightquality. This yearscolor trends showpastel shades ofblue that are calmand reflective.These blues com-bine with whites,or more vibrantshades, to createthe right mood foryou. For this smallapartmentkitchen, I chose arobins egg blue,which has touchesof blue and greenreminiscent of aquiet sea. Coloruniformity pre-vents a space fromlooking too choppy,so I extended thesandy beige wallpaint to cover theceiling. The gentlepairing of pastelshades isenlivened by awhite tile back-splash and whiteappliances. Tomake an ordinarytile look special, Iapplied turquoisegrout that links to

the cabinetry andadds a neat designdetail.

To give the cabi-nets a professionalfinish, take thetime to remove allthe doors andhardware. Repairany holes or crackswith wood filler.Sand smooth. Ifthe cabinets have acoat of varnish,sand to rough upthe surface, andthen apply a high-hide paint primerdesigned for slip-pery surfaces.Allow the primer todry completelybefore painting.

The glossier thepaint sheen youapply, the easier itis to clean the sur-face. For a busykitchen, semi-glossis the most practi-cal, but I used alow-luster paintand was happywith the results.The painted sur-face does wipeclean easily, andthe low-luster addsa feeling of space.

The originalvinyl kitchen floorwas in very poorshape, so Ireplaced it with arubber floor.Associated more

with commercialuse in hospitalsand gymnasiums, arubber floor is verycomfortable under-foot, nonslip,hygienic andextremely durable.It is available in arange of shadesand textures, butsmooth is best forthe kitchen. Thisfloor has the lookof slate but is lesscostly, and moreforgiving in akitchen.

Whats standard procedure for tile regrout?By Angie HicksAngies List

Dear Angie: Ihired a contractor toacid wash, regroutand seal my bath-room tile. He did notremove the old grout_ merely spongedover a new groutcoating. He says thisis standard operat-ing procedure, as wedid not contract forold grout removal. Isthis true, or did Ijust get ripped off?

Dear Angela:Unfortunately, thereare a number of con-tractors who regrouttile this way, eventhough it is not arecommended orreliable solution.

People in the indus-try refer to this prac-tice as skim coat-ing. Its a way ofmaking the arealook better withoutactually fixing it,and the new groutwill wear off oncethe area is used.

While you canleave a small portionof the old grout, youneed to remove amajority of it. Thatway, theres enoughroom for the new tilegrout to bond to thesides not the top of the tile. Even ifthe grout is worndown in areas, youneed someone toremove it beforeapplying new grout.

Luckily, regrout-ing tile is a practiceyou shouldnt have

to do often. If youtake care of andclean your tile groutregularly, you shouldonly have to replaceit every 12 to 15years. Lesser qualityjobs or failure tocare for the groutmay lead to the needfor replacementevery eight to 10years.

To get the maxi-mum amount oftime between groutreplacement, be sureto care for it proper-ly.

Never use bleach,ammonia or acid-based cleaners ongrout. Shower clean-ers that indicate youshould spray thecleaner on and leaveit there also damagegrout long-term. Use

a neutral pH cleanerif you want to getmore life out of yourgrout.

You should alsomake sure to removeany excess moisturefrom the room, asthat can damagegrout. Squeegeeyour shower afteruse, and make sureto use exhaust fansto remove moisture.

When it comes toregrouting tile, knowwhat it should cost.Low-priced esti-mates may indicatethe contractor does-nt offer old groutremoval as part ofthe job.

Non-sanded grouttypically costsbetween $5 and $6per square foot forremoval and replace-

ment. Sanded grout,which would be usedfor any joints with aone-eighth inch gapor larger, costs $6 to$8 per square foot.Cost can varydepending on thesize of the area, thetype of tile used orthe difficulty of thejob.

Keep in mind thatwhoever is replacingyour grout shouldalso be placing 100percent siliconecaulk in cornerjoints and aroundtubs and showerbasins. This step isimportant, becausegrout has no flexibil-ity. If theres anymovement betweena tile and a cornerjoint, grout willcrack.

Building anythingwas exorbitantly expensive,yet prospective miners need-ed a home. Among the mostcommon castoffs were emptysaloon bottles that masonsstacked with plaster intowalls that allowed naturallighting within these darkrooms. To this day these curi-ous homes still stand in ghosttowns to inspire a whole newcentury of creative masonswho are also keen on recy-cling.

Glass bottles are beautiful,colorful and amazingly adapt-able to repurposing. The glassbottle that is making a come-back all over America as afree building material is gen-erating a creative new look in

garden masonry.Landscape gardeners Gino

Dreese and Troy Williamsbegan implementing theirown brand of bottle construc-tion at their getaway in theCalifornia desert. Their foundrock and desert artifact crazyquilt masonry gradually con-tained more and more glassbottles over the years untileventually they built upenough supply to attemptmore ambitious projects.These included whole walls oftheir home to catch the sunas it sets over the high desert.These bottle walls arent uni-form like the miners, butdesigned for a constellation oflight, color and shapes thatrival stained glass windows.

For the rest of us, theirwork demonstrates a range ofgreat ideas for the creativegardener looking for a one-of-a-kind element in the land-scape. The blending of bottlesand mortar involves very sim-ple materials that may beconfigured in many differentways to create green con-
