On that bright, sunny, marvelous and so memorable day in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Don Jose Sulaiman, WBC lifetime President, led the

celebration ceremony at the WBC's 50th anniversary Convention.

The Pride of Louisville, Kentucky and The Champion of Champions was crowned as “King of Boxing” by Ukrainian, Vitali Klitschko, who was at

that time the undisputed WBC heavyweight Champion.

After receiving the WBC Diamond belt, the greatest award which is presented by the World

Boxing Council, Muhammad Ali's face was illuminated with a radiant smile, as he raised his

hand thanking his cheering adoring, enraptured, fans, brilliantly concluding an unforgettable

chapter in the history of our noble sport.

I am extremely happy to share with you the official "WBC BOXEO MUNDIAL" digital magazine. It has taken years to try to find the ways to implement and I am proud of the WBC staff who has taken this project and has shaped into a reality.

We will be doing a monthly edition of the magazine and look to eventually be able to come out with a printed version.

This magazine is edited in English and Spanish and we have secured a distribution in Mexico to 3 million users with an agreement with a mobile phone company.

We look forward for your comments, ideas and feedback about our publication.

LEO SANTA CRUZCONQUERED THE WBC DIAMOND BELT

At the Staples Center of Los Angeles, Leo “Terremoto“ Santa Cruz conserved his undefeated record and conquered the prestigious World Boxing Council Diamond Belt, but it took a momumental career best effort to hold back a riptide and defeat an intrepid, ferocious brave as a lion Abner Mares, in a ring war, which is a firm candidate for Fight of the Year!

Whenever two Mexican warriors clash... fever pitch expectation, mustard keen red hot anticipation and electric tension, are chile pepper elements and this one was no exception! Yet...it's sheer intensity proved the exception!

An accidental clash of heads in round three, gashes Abner's right brow, but his corner managed to factor this in, staunching the bleeding, so it didn't significantly hamper him for the rest of an incredible fight.

The crowd roar and rise as one in the final rounds as both tremendous fighters briefly embrace and then straight back to war. Each tosses caution to the wind and slugs toe toe for a seeming eternity.... which must have lasted thirty pulsating seconds in the final coutdown, in truly amazing and electric action, willing on tired, aching muscles for an absolute grandstand finale. What an utterly amazing fight topped off by a thunderous, prolonged and thoroughly deserved

standing ovation!!! Who could have ever thought it would go the distance...but it did. Bile spent and fury sated, Leo calmly goes over to Abner's corner, both somehow find the strength from some reserves of depleted energy resevoirs to hug, grinning almost shyly at the greatness it took two of them to make, as the atmosphere still crackles with the lingering whiff of cordite? The judges´scorecards are: 117-111, 114-114 and 115-113, so Leo wins a majority decision and conquers the WBC Diamond Belt.

The saga of two mighty lefts with only one fighter left....Julio “Pollito“ Ceja.

A spectacular fifth round TKO of fellow Mexican Hugo “Cuatito" Ruis to win the WBC interim super bantamweight championship. But only after surviving an almighty scare in the third when a little twin left hook, decked him and he got up, to somehow survive a veritable barnstorm iflurry and flutter during the thirty seconds, leading to the sweet music of the bell.

The taller Hugo had been countering and patiently eying the main chance, until an opening appeared and he landing a picture perfect left. At six years younger, a

superbly conditioned 22 year old Julio, had shaken the effects off of the mighty blow in the sixty seconds of vital respite.

And then after working his way back in the fourth, one round later, his own left blockbuster, which landed with one almighty and audible thud, instantly sending Hugo down like a felled spruce. Somehow he managed to get up but simply couldn't stave off the irrestible follow up attack, which saw him trapped and briefly battered, until the Referee smartly moved in with arms spread, to head off the risk of impending disaster.

Television is certainly a phenomenon that has completely changed the habits of human life- Who could have ever imagined years ago watching on TV that historical fight of Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman in Zaire...the very heart of Africa. The TV also imposes customs. An interesting social example, is when the whole neighborhood met in the homes of friends to comfortably enjoy each others' company, accompanied with a beer or two. Those nostalgic Saturday boxing nights , also changed boxing, converting many thousands to millions of fans in their own homes.��I still remember in the early days of television (1950) when the people gathered in the streets to watch boxing on TV´s that furniture stores kept lit at night. How can I forget going to watch the great fight between Raul Macias vs Ernesto Parra in Mexico City. I had to leave my Wife at the hotel on our honeymoon!. This fight meant the retirement in boxing of both fighters.�

But the TV also has its problems. My teacher and close friend Arturo “Cuyo” Hernandez, the greatest manager in the history of Mexico, always said that someday TV will kill boxing- something that I hardly refuted. It took me a few years to realize that Cuyo was right. Televisa of Mexico achieved a world record to go live, with open boxing, every Saturday night for 47 years, only three shy of a half century!��

Then came to TV the soccer lovers, just to send only boxing to Pay Per View, removing the people who have no money to pay to be able to watch the boxing cards. That started up a monumental crisis, forcing Mexican fighters to emigrate.��As leader of the sport I spent many years asking and insisting to bring television back because boxing was dying.

Then came �The governor of Quintana Roo, Felix Gonzalez Canto, willing to give the people of his state the memorable fight of Rudy Lopez for the WBC title. He paid paid the costs of free TV to broadcast at 1 am.

The soaring television ratings opened the eyes of the network that shared the vision and faith of promoter Fernando Beltran to return free boxing to Mexico. It produced such high viewng figures, that now three television networks have opened their screens to boxing. Namely: TV Azteca, Televisa and Cadena Tres,

We can’t deny the enormous importance of television in boxing. It's also crucial for the growing popularity of idols in the making. The World Boxing Council promised a major campaign to give Mexico a prominent place in the world of professional boxing and this is being achieved. A great card loaded with passion in Leon, Guanajuato, with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Several cards in Cancun, with the influence of local hero Rudy Lopez and especially the card “History in Mexico”, where a WBC heavyweight world title bout was presented.

Mexican boxing is going through a period of transition. Many of the greats of the past decade have retired or are about to, like JC Chavez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Chiquita Gonzalez, Daniel Zaragoza... among others. New idols are needed, and their fights will now be broadcast by open televisión, again heralding a Golden era in these new times.

Former WBC featherweight Champion Jhonny Gonzalez (58-9, 49 KOs) scored a second round TKO over Kazuki Hashimoto (11-5, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Auditorio Bicentenario in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico.

Gonzalez dropped Hashimoto with an extended left hook and the bout was waved off at two minutes 56 seconds. It was Jhonny’s first fight since losing the WBC belt against Gary Russell in March. With this triumph, he conquers the vacant WBC super featherweight International Silver crown.

Jhonny's vast experience proved the dominant factor. He kept Hashimoto at bay with long left jabs and then shook him with his famed left hook. After he'd been canvassed by that mighty left, Hashimoto bravely got up, but he was visibly dazed and cotton wool legged. The Referee immediately stepped in to save him. A great start as a super featherweight for Jhonny who's aiming for a title fight against formidable WBC Champion Takashi Miura by year end, or at the beginning of 2016.

Jhonny Gonzalez announced that he will fight against Jonathan "Polvo" Oquendo on September 12th September at the MGM Grand of Las Vegas on the undercard of WBC welterweight Champion and undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. Vs Andre Berto.

Uruguayan, Cecilia Comunales defeated Milagros Tejada, to win the WBC International female super lightweight title on points, with scorecards of 98- 92 and two 100-90Comunales showed determination, concentration and a great progress, in defeating the Dominican fighter who had earned her challenge to this vacant title by winning 8 of her last 9 bouts.

Comunales decalred after the fight “ I am really happy, I feel wonderful. Since the very first round I looked for the fight and it was really beneficial to win by points rather than a KO. “ With this victory, Comunales improves her record to 13 victories with 8 KO´s and just one defeat.

CECILIA COMUNALES CONQUERED THE WBCINTERNATIONAL FEMALE SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

In what turned out to be a rough and tumble affair, Argentina’s Edith Soledad Matthysse (14-7-1,1 KO) won the WBC female featherweight title on Saturday night in Caseros, Buenos Aires with a ten round unanimous decision victory over Canada’s Jelena Mrdjenovic (35-9-1, 19 Kos).

Matthysse, trained by her brother Lucas, came out with fury in the opening round but was quickly shut down by Mrdjenovic’s high guard and stern jab. The Canadian used her superior skills to back the Argentinian up and came forward for the duration of the bout utilizing her authoritative lead left.

Matthysse was on her bicycle and back-peddled with fleet footwork throughout, but would spring forward and there were frequent clashes of heads. She also spent more time tying Mrdjenovic up in clinches and punching at short range. Mrdjenovic appeared to land the cleaner text book punches. but Matthysse did have her moments. There were some furious exchanges late in the fight which repeatedly had the crowd on its feet.

After ten rounds were completed, the Judges awarded the fight to the Argentinian by scores of 96-94 – Samuel Conde Lopez (Puerto Rico), Gustavo Padilla (Panama) 98-92, and Stanley Christodoulou (South Africa) 97-93.

WBC light flyweight Champion in recess, Esmeralda “Joya” Moreno defeated Jessica Nery Plata by unanimous decision in a WBC light flyweight eliminator fight.

In a fight of experience Vs youth, Moreno who's eight years old than her twenty year old opponent, imposed her greater ring smarts, bringing it to bear against Nery Plata, winning by scorecards of 96-94, 98-92 and 97-93.

Nery had her moments and caught Moreno with some long, hard accurate rights. But in the second half of the fight, Moreno moved up into an intense higher gear and her sheer insistence couldn't be matched by the youngster. With this victory, Esmeralda becomes the official challenger of WBC light flyweight queen, Ibeth "Roca" Zamora.

IN A FIGHT OF EXPERIENCE VS YOUTH, ESMERALDA MORENODEFEATS JESSICA NERY PLATAIN WBC ELIMINATORY BOUT

Yazmín "Rusita" Rivas left a clear mark of superiority, defeating Kandy "Rubia" Sandoval, in a successful defence of her WBC bantamweight championship. "Rusita" didnt have an easy night of it, against a tough, hungry and ambitious Sandoval, who showed great spirit.

However, the experience and skills of Rivas imposed over Sandoval, were telling factors, indicated in the Judges´scorecards of : 96-94, 96-94 and 97-93.

It was a clear but uncomfortable victory for Rivas, who was obliged to work hard throughout.

A fight for the ages, happened on August 21st, 1981, at the most important boxing venue of that era, the Sports Pavilion of the Caesar´s Palace Hotel in Las Vegas. At this iconic venue, the greatest Champions of Mexico and Puerto Rico, Salvador Sanchez, the then WBC featherweight Champion, and the super bantamweight Champion Wilfredo Gomez. It was total outright war from moment one, and those there, instantly realized it'd never go the distance!

The passion that boxing generates, was not only coursing though the veins of the fans who attended that Arena, but also among the two mentioned Nations, coastline to shore. It was a matter of national pride.

Gomez was knocked down in the first round after receiving a hard right hand. He wasn't that badly hurt but none the less this moment of drama, sparked great excitement in all fans. Wilfredo got back up, and so typically of his style and immense bravery, he went straight back to war throwing powerful punches in bunches. He was absolutely determined to jealously preserve and conserve his undefeated record.

And that’s how they continued to and fro, that is, until round 8, when Salvador managed to land some of his best punches in thudding combinations, sending Wilfredo back to the canvass, but this time he was outpunched and overwhelmed.

Total pandemonium! A d e v i l i s h l y d i f fi c u l t situation for the fighter from the Island, who s o m e h o w a n d incredibly got back to h i s f e e t , b u t swaying...visibly and obviously unsteadily, and the third man in the ring, Filipino Carlos Padilla, halted the fight. At the point of the stoppage, the three Judges had Salvador ahead.

A star lineup of participants participated. USNBC Champ, Boyd Melson, Capt. in the Army Reserves, who Jill Diamond of WBC Cares, brought along to play on the Heroes Team, and former Red Sox player, Tony Valhovic who played with the Legends.

A memorable competitive and also fun game, following which everyone was presented with a Championship Medal. Jill commented: " beautiful day, ending with an informal dinner, friendship and hopes for winning next year!

Boyd thanked everyone for making the charity softball game raising money for Wounded Warriors, a tremendous success, saying: " Thank you guys for taking the time out of your schedule to let us regular folk have such a good time competing against you in softball to raise money helping do God's work. Had the UFC, MLB, and NFL all represented on the LEGENDS team."He also said: " HEROES TEAM, are all Purple Heart Awardees, having been injured in combat. Thank you guys for what you have done to help protect our Country, as well as the World, and for letting us play on your team!

In boxing history, many decisions have concluded in great victories but also in great failures.

Some of these decisions were related to the complicated time of saying goodbye. This moment usually comes when the boxer has to end his career due to a physical condition, a personal problem, age or having no more reasons to fight. These are real difficult times for the boxer and these times are usually delayed, often offering still great performances, but in other cases only receiving unnecessary punishment.

This has been the case with Erik Morales, Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones Jr., and Bernard Hopkins. Bernsrd, last year aged 49, earned the record for being the Oldest fighter holding a world title .

But what does it really take for a boxer to take the decision of keep boxing? I think of Muhammad Ali.

This case is undoubtedly the most important to analyze due to the legendary career that the King of Boxing had. In his amateur career, when he was still known as Cassius Marcellus Clay, he began boxing at 12 years old, winning his first amateur title at 14. He then conquered a gold medal in the Olympic Games in 1960. He made his

professional debut in that same year against Tunney Hunsaker. It started an eighteen year professional,career.

At the beginning he had important fights against Henry Cooper, Floyd Patterson, George Chuvalo. In 1964 he was the youngest Champion in all boxing history, winning the world heavyweight title against Sonny Liston.Ten years on, he had an epic war against George Foreman. There were battles against Ken Norton, Leon Spinks and a terrible and dramatic trilogy against Joe Frazier.

Muhammad Ali began his debacle in 1979, prior to his return against Larry Holmes and after a frustrated “last fight” he decided to return without hearing the recommendation of his close circle. Years and years of battles, where boxing didn’t offer the security that exists now, left Ali with troubles. It is also known he used to have hard workouts, allowing his sparring partners to throw heavy blows to the body in order to strengthen resistance, a practice that was not approved by doctors. Freddie Pacheco, one of his main doctors, confirmed that his preparations were very extreme.

After his second bout against Norton in 1976, Pacheco recommended Ali to retire

from boxing, but he i g n o r e d h i s w o r d s . Pacheco unveiled the d imin ished phys ica l condition of the boxer prior to the fight with Spinks. He stated that his reflexes were slow, it was obvious that rivals easily land punches on him and that his speech h a d b e c o m e s l o w, symptoms of a brain injury.

With this diagnosis, he still decides to fight in 1980 and he faced Larry Holmes, losing by TKO in the tenth round. Ali's physical condition was deplorable, but why did he still want to continue boxing?

It is said that the main cause was an economic one. Ali had many debts. He had been ripped off and had little money, due in part to some bad investments. He always denied this, alleging to

have lingering hunger to win a fourth world title. He returned again and for the last time in 1981. His opponent was Trevor Berbick, 27 years old, who had been defeated by Larry Holmes.

The fight was held in Nassau, Bahamas, because in the United States, there was't any Athletic Commission approving the battle because of the physical shape of Ali. For diminishing doubts he had some medical examinations to confirm his good health, which went well. Yet, the result was evident and proved by Berbick, who defeated him by unanimous decision in 10 rounds.

Almost three years after retirement, Ali was diagnosed in September 1984 with Parkinson's, a chronic neurodegenerative disease that eventual ly leads to a progressive disability, as a result of the destruction of neurons, for reasons that even now are currently unknown. One of his doctors, Dr. Martin Ecker, commented that he must acquired Parkinson during his career due to the repeated hard blows to his head, denying that it was inherited. In fact, Ali shown to have some problems with his reflexes after after losing his crown against Larry Holmes in 1980. In addition, his speech had become slower and he showed unexplained tiredness.

Still, there are diverse opinions that don’t confirm that boxing is the cause of his condition. Boxing boxing back then is not was not what it is today. Thanks to our dear Don Jose Sulaiman and to the World Boxing Council, there have been developed medical studies and measures to protect boxers, such as the reduction of 15-12 rounds, the implementation of 4 ropes in the ring or also the 30, seven days and twenty hours pre weigh in to monitor the weight but also and vitally, the health of boxers. It is also estimated that Ali may had an early neuronal degenerat ion and boxing accelerated the symptoms. Over the years, the manifestations of the disease have advanced, but with the help of his wife, Lonnie Williams, he has valiantly fought against this disorder, acting as an example and inspiration for the people who are similarly suffering with this illness. Lonnie says Ali has not been depressed with his condition .Ali has has a very active life. And he has also helped at numerous charity events.

The fundamental question is...even knowing the condition he was, why Ali continue to step into the ring? What was the cause?

These questions can be applied to too many fighters who have continued when they should have concluded. I think the biggest cause to continue doing something that still hurts, is not economic, nor the search of glory, I think that the main reason is a human condition, “Doing what you love the most”. Love involves thousands of feelings as the passion and pride, a fighter who loves sport will continue to do it until the very last minute he or she can.

Sometimes this happens without fighters being aware of their limits and their human limitations. Love can Oblige fighters to make these sacrifices. Love leads to a personal and internal battle. A battle seeking redemption.

Many boxers had to fight against thisparadox. While so many have suffered, some others have enjoyed the glory, but at the end of the day, whatever the result is, each boxer will fundamentally have to decide to continue...or retire.

After conquering the world title defeating Bermane Stiverne on January 17th at the MGM Grand of Las Vegas, Nevada, Deontay Wilder stands as a proud champion of the most prestigious boxing organization, the WBC.

The fighter from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, got into boxing by accident after his daughter was born.At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Wilder conquered the bronze medal in the heavyweight division. It was the only medal that the US delegation won in this discipline.

He is a fighter with a great punching power, debuting as pro on November 15th, 2008 defeating Ethan Cox by KO in the second round.The current WBC heavyweight king has a record of 34 victories with 33 KO´s. And NO defeats!

Yet another victory in his upcoming fight will numerically bring Floyd Mayweather level to Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record, with Floyd’s legend already anchored in the bedrock of history.

Much more rough hewn in blockbuster style, Rocky punctuated the best punchline ending to a world title fight courtesy of “Suzy Q.” While Floyd is top bracket for superlative style, gloriously confirming, underlying and proving beyond any doubt, the boxing maxim of hit without being hit. Pinpoint accuracy and shoulder rolls, rather than rolling thunder.

Paradoxically Floyd’s greatest test under fire came against the fearless and fearsome Diego “Chico” Corrales. On that night, even though his hands were sore and smarting, Floyd not only outsmarted Diego, he also fought through searing pain, to drop him five times, pruning the taller man’s flourishing undefeated record, after obliging Diego’s corner to threw in the towel.

From a famly of boxers, including his Trainer Uncle Roger- a world Champion, who had two bruising, losing brushes with Julio Cesar Chavez, boxing is the only job Floyd has ever known. So, he’s honed, polished and burnished his vocation/profession, to excel beyond the boundries of Grand Master, edging on to the threashold of uncharted territory. But…there have been fights in his career, where even Floyd has been up against it. One which comes to mind, is the first encounter against Jose Luis Castillo who outweighed him by a whopping nine pounds on fight night. But the even more serious factor, was a torn rotator cuff in Floyd’s left shoulder which hampered him and obliged him to switch more often than not to southpaw.

Characteristically in the return, the rugged Castillo was mastered, matriculated and outmanoeuvered. A similar case with rough and tumble Marcos “Chino” Maidana.

Shane Mosely who’s talented and hard hitting in his own right, and with his own right, painfully caught Floyd twice in quick succession during round two, and the great one’s knees kinked, momentarily swaying him. Annoyed at showing human frailty by descending from Mount Olympus, Floyd escaped and ascended, only to return and punish Shane. There was the peach of a fight against Oscar De La Hoya which ended in a split decisión, but a loss for Oscar, who was attacking, only to be countered by a high octane welter of accurate punches as he kept moving in.

Five years or more in the making, for many the fight with Manny was not as exciting as they had hoped. Yet it was a shutout victory for Floyd, who applied the Field Marshall’s baton with adroit adeptness. Oh…and yes, it’s the richest fight in history…until the next mega boxing clash somewhere and probably some way down the yellow brick road.I really hope that Floyd calls it a day at 49 fights, with nothing left to prove. All that glitters isn’t gold and the Midas touch can tranform into a petrifying curse.

The other day at the sports club which I attend, I found an exquisite bracelet on a rather remote bench. Its intertwined copper and gold hue shone so brightly, with stingrays of temptation, in the glowing descending sunset.

It was long past the time the offices had closed, so I took it home, and polished it some more, until it was radiant. A piece of jewellery that one lady had lost, it would have been a lovely present for my Lady. But of course, although I coveted this marvel, I’d found it and it was never mine to keep. With a heavy heart, but a lighter conscience, I handed it in the very next day.

Although Floyd can always keep his WBC belts won in five weight categories, his Gold Belt and the Emerald belt, which he brilliantly earned and DIDN’T just happen upon, he won’t be reigning Champion or Pound for Pound Monarch forever. As he himself says, he must and he will relinquish his belts to give others the chance to shine. And Floyd must retire, sooner rather than later. Saying this is appreciably easier than doing it, given hisaccomplishments. But boxing up there in the ring, living on the edge within its cornerposts, is a passing parameter of life.

Perhaps a solid silver rather than a slither of a trophy could be hammered, fashioned “ore” evenvulcanized, depicting Father Time with his sythe. It could be presented as an accolade, but also asa warning to a fighter who reaches 49 victories… and NOT out. Because by then, he/she should be wise enough to have grasped that the opponent that no one can mow down is: minutes, hours, days and years, which conieve and combine into ageing code combinations, that can’t be held back or cracked.

The choice of silver for such a trophy is only fitting. This beautiful metal, in some ways matches a boxer’s mettle. It has to be constantly polished or it’ll dull and tarnish. A Silver reminder of a Golden Era. Professio-nally, it all started on October 11th 1996. Only Floyd knows exactly when to call time!

Boxing is experiencing a resurgence in the UK, we currently have 7 recognised World Champions and 2 inter im champions from the various governing bodies. The sport is in the healthiest state it has been since the Calzaghe-Hatton era and with no less than four television channels broadcasting professional boxing (Sky, Boxnation, Channel 5 and most recently ITV) we are in a state of plenty.

The big question that follows is who is our next World Champion going to be?The answer may lie in the Super Middleweight division which is laden with Great British prospects.

Callum Smith, Martin Murray and Rocky Fielding are three Brits occupying spots in the top 12 WBC ratings, rated 2nd, 11th and 12th respectively. Of the three, Callum Smith appears to have the brightest future with an unblemished 17 fight record and tipped by many in the business to go all the way. His upcoming British title fight against no. 12 rated Rocky Fielding will surely capture the imagination with both men being heavy hitters and hailing from Liverpool! Fielding brings his own 21 fight undefeated record so will not be there to make up the numbers and has a real chance o f upse t t i ng the Smi th bandwagon. The winner of that fight will almost certainly be in line for a shot at the WBC title, the loser will still be in a position to come again.

That leaves Martin Murray, tough as they come and a seasoned campaigner. Murray was unlucky enough to be awarded title shots against two of the most formidable middleweights of the last decade. His controversial loss over a fading Sergio Martinez and his brave stoppage defeat to GGG will almost certainly earn him another shot now he has stepped up in weight but only time will tell if we have seen the best of Martin Murray.

Arguably the strongest chance of a new British world champion comes in the form of 'Saint' George Groves, currently

in the mandatory position following the upset victory by Las Vegas based Swede Badou Jack over Anthony Dirrell in April. The way is now paved for the 'Saint' to take his third shot at a world title, rumoured to be taking place on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's 49th fight on 12th September. The champion is not undefeated, neither is he invincible however he does know how to dig into the trenches and fight hard for 12 rounds as he showed us against Dirrell. Groves may draw inspiration from Jack's only career defeat that occurred last year via 1st round TKO at the hands of Derek Edwards when he was badly shaken after two heavy knock downs.

We know from Groves' first encounter with Carl Froch that he can start fast and is heavy handed especially early on. There are question marks around his stamina and ability to take a punch but Groves is savvy enough to be aware of this and will no doubt be working on a tactical game plan that works to his advantages. Expect him to set a precedent early on using the jab and potentially stop Jack in the middle rounds!

Groves will no doubt feel the pressure more than most after arch rival James DeGale claimed a portion of the super middleweight crown earlier this year. A potential multimillion pound unification beckons if Groves can find a way to beat Badou Jack and claim the Green and Gold Belt.

There were not always 17 divisions in professional boxing, as it all started in a much more rudimentary fashion, centuries before in places like Ethiopia and Greece.

Boxing developed to a further extent in England, but only the heavyweight division. Not all the fighters were big bruisers, and it was not usual to see fights between radically different heights, shapes and sizes.

The primary division was heavyweight, and then bit by bit, generation by generation and year by year. the next 16 evolved, following on.

It was on 1867, when the first title middleweight fight took place, Then it came the welterweights in 1880. After this the lightweights appeared in 1887. The bantamweight division in 1890 and the featherweights one year later.

Barrera became the second Mexican fighter on getting in, while Trinidad, only after 7 years of retirement, became the first Puerto Rican fighter in this Hall of Fame. Success and KO “ is the much awaited and eagerly anticipated autobiography that former WBC bantamweight Champion, Carlos Zarate, wrote about his KO studded ring career and the titanic fight he won to defeat alcoholism and addictions. The man with a winning smile and a gentle

manner outside ring hours, was an all time great when it came down to the business of fighting. Ranked all time number one bantamweight alongside Reuben Olivares by Ring Magazine, Carlos' dynamite mighty punching career spanned 70 fights, 66 wins- 63 of them via KO and just four defeats! The Nevada state has designated July 30th as “Wayne McCullough´s day ”commemorating the 20th anniversary of Wayne conquering the WBC world championship. “ I am honored and also because this happened at the city which has adopted me. I'm proud to be recognized for conquering the green and gold belt. I want to thank WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman, for presenting me with this recognition," McCullough commented. On July 30th, 1995, Wayne conquered the WBC bantamweight crown defeating Japanese Yasuei Yakushiji, in Nagoya, Japan.

Few people gave him any possibility, but that night Wayne proved to have a great determination, skill and fighting spirit. McCullough had an amateur career of more than 300 bouts, more than 100 ko´s and only 10 loses; he also conquered a Silver belt at the Olympic games of Barcelona 1992. During his professional career he built a record of 27 victories with 18 Kos and 7 loses. Wayne was never knocked out and he fought against the cream of the crop including: Johnny Bredahl, José Luis Bueno, Víctor Rabanales, Daniel Zaragoza, Erik Morales, Naseem Hamed, Oscar Larios and Scott Harrison.

Santiago Tianguistenco in the State of Mexico, commemorated the thirty third anniversary of the death of boxing superstar Salvador Sanchez with honor, style and pernache. The beautiful Santa Maria Del Buen Suceso Church, was packed by Salvador's family and friends. It was a huge turnout. A mariachi band played some jaunty and happy tunes there, accompanying a constantly growing procession, to the nearby pine trees lined cemetery leading to Sal's grave, where heartfelt tributes were offered, and wreaths as well as garlands of bright colored flowers festooned. Then on to the Civic Center where Salvador's Family provided lunch for a multitude. And promising youngsters competed in nine boxing finals. It was a tribute and salute to Salvador's everlasting memory, as an all time great WBC featherweight Champion and a sports icon. But also brilliant ray of hope

and progress towards a bright future for young boxers.

A wonderful day which brought great pride to Salvador's Mother Maria Luisa Narvaez De Sanchez. How She, the Family and this town love him!

Celebration of a Champion

The first LA first invitational amateur show was organized by Rudy Tellez, Joe Zanders, USA Boxing President, Mike Martino, USA Boxing CEO along with the Alhambra Youth Boxing Club, LA Sheriff Jim McDonnell along with Tony Campbell, from UPAC and it was was sponsored by the World Boxing Council. More than 160 young fighters showed their great potential, skil ls and technique, but also a great passion and enthusiasm.

The WBC awarded a special green and gold belt, manufactured especially and specifically for the amateur show, as well as medals- a gold one for the winner and a silver one for the runner up.

USA Boxing decided who were the 3 boxers that deserved to have the WBC belts. The winning boxers were: Christian Parez, aged 10, Christopher Zavala and Carlos Balderas.

The attendance was much higher that expected, with participation requests from boxers of others states. However this particular edition was for Californian fighters.

The WBC wants to gratefully thank and congratulate all the people that made this wonderful event possible. It was a magnificent invitational show combining partnership, sports rivalry and union. We want to reiterate our support for the organization and future editions of this superb and growing competition.

1.- What is going to happen with the middleweight title? Canelo and Cotto will have a rematch or must the winner face the victor of Golovkin VS Lemieux?

Cotto and Canelo will contest the title on November 21st and the mandatory challenger will be the winner of Golovkin vs. Lemieux. There are lots of possible combinations but we must firstly wait for these results. Golovkin is fighting on October 17th and the winner will be WBC interim champion; Cotto is fighting with Canelo on November 21st and the winner will be the WBC middleweight world champion. Any other comment or any other information is pure speculation. We can't know anything until these fights happen. Then we can and we will define depending on this. That is what de WBC has ruled.

2.- Why is Floyd Mayweather allowed to have two world titles, while other fighters must choose?

The WBC is always on the leading edge and has adapted to the circumstances, including high tech and today's situations. Mayweather is a fighter who has become the most important boxer in the last years. Floyd has also always been loyal to the WBC. He had the intention of meeting Jose Sulaiman to address his future, however this was sadly not to be. The WBC decided to do everything possible to bring about Mayweather vsPacquiao. That is why no mandatory bout was ordered in the welterweight and super welterweight division. This measure helped to create the conditions to make this fight happen. Mayweather will be fighting on September 12th and after that, we will address the status of both divisions.

3.- There are silver, regular, international, diamond, emerald and emeritus belts in the WBC. Which is the real world championship belt, and what is the Hierarchy of all of them?

The WBC recognizes only one World Champion per division and sometimes, where rules allow it, an interim Champion, when the Champion is not able to compete. All the other belts were created to develop talents, by location or age. The Emerald, Diamond and Gold belt are exclusive trophies, presented at special fights.

4.- The Diamond title is above the regular champion?

They are different. The world champion is the king division. The Diamond Champion is presented with this belt after winning a fight against a rival of his equal hierarchy- another Champion.

5.- Which Champions will attend the WBC 53rd Convention?

The WBC is glad, happy and honored to count on the attendance confirmation of legends Evander Hollyfield, Lennox Lewis, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler Roberto Duran, among others. We will very soon release a full list with further information.
