The ratio of the number of cars to the number of motorcycles on the road during peak hours is 5 : 4. The ratio of the number of motorcycles to the number of lorries on the road during peak hours is 8 : 5. (a) If the total number of cars and motorcycles on the road during peak hours is 1044, how many more motorcycles than lorries are there? (b) How many vehicles are there on the road during peak hours? 1. 3 + 5 = 8 units 8 units → 600 1 unit → 600 ÷ 8 = 75 3 units → 3 × 75 = 225 blue beads 5 units → 5 × 75 = 375 red beads 225 – 49 = 176 blue beads 375 – 243 = 132 red beads blue : red 176 : 132 4 : 3 The new ratio of the number of blue beads to the number of red beads is 4 : 3. 2. (a) cars : motorcycles : lorries 5 ×2 : 4 ×2 8 : 5 10 : 8 : 5 10 + 8 units → 1044 18 units → 1044 1 unit → 1044 ÷ 18 = 58 8 – 5 = 3 units 3 units → 58 × 3 = 174 There are 174 more motorcycles than lorries.
