The Amazing Jerboa

(1) Try to imagine an animal that lives in the desert and that doesn’t never need to drink. (2) If you don’t think that’s

possible, you’re wrong! (3) This animal does exist. (4) Its called the jerboa. (5) The more you learn about this

creature, the more amazing it seems.

(6) The jerboa is a mouse-sized rodent. (7) It is related to rats and mice it actually looks more like a kangaroo. (8)

Kangaroos can be very dangerous. (9) Its hind legs are four times as long as its front legs. (10) These enable the

jerboa to leap as far as 10 feet and jump three feet straight up in the air. (11) Unlike other desert rodents, the jerboa

also runs on its hind legs. (12) Its extremely long tail helps it balance and lets it change direction in midair.

(13) Jerboas eat both plants and animals. (14) They're omnivores. (15) The animals are small insects. (16) They

don't drink any water, though. (17) They get all the water they need from the food they eat. (18) Some scientists

think that jerboas can even reuse the moisture from there own breath. (19) Jerboas that have been captured don't

drink water even if it's offered to them.

(20) By staying hidden, jerboas are also protected from enemies like foxes in underground burrows. (21) The jerboas

come back out when the sun goes down. (22) Some of them deal with very cold winters or hot summers by going

into a sleep-like state until the harsh weather is over. (23) They usually live alone. (24) Maybe that's the reason they

make hardly any sounds. (25) With their huge eyes and ears, however, they don't miss much of what went on in their

world. (26) Jerboas are amazing animals!
