ISTANBUL DIARYMARK HORTON

The Editor presents his diary from the European Open Championships in Istanbul

21 JuneWhen I went down to see how Tacchi was getting

on following the third session of the Mixed Pairs Final, it was just as he was preparing to depart, having seen little of interest. Tempting fate, I decided to stay and watch the last four deals:

Board 29. Dealer North. All Vul. [ A Q J 10 6 ] A 10 { K 6 4 3 } A Q [ 9 5 [ 8 7 4 ] 9 8 7 4 ] K J 5 { A 10 9 8 7 2 { Q 5 } 4 } 8 7 5 3 2 [ K 3 2 ] Q 6 3 2 { J } K J 10 9 6

West North East South Papakyriak. Lorenzini Sykrakop. Bello

— 2NT Pass 3}* Pass 3[ Pass 3NT All Pass

I cannot be sure of the methods being used, but it may be that 3} was simple Stayman. South took some time before bidding 3NT, perhaps thinking about introducing her clubs.

East led the }3 and declarer won with the ace, and cashed five rounds of spades followed by five rounds of clubs. East's increasingly agonised discarding made it easy for declarer to play dummy's diamond and record 12 tricks, +690, but only 20/54 for NS.

If 3} reveals the 5-3 major-suit fit and South can then bid a natural 4}, North is likely to drive to the slam that was reached 15 times, scoring 40/14.

Jumping to 6[ is perhaps a gamble, but one that paid off handsomely, +1520 being worth 47/7.

East led the ]3 and declarer won with the king, played a spade to the king and a club to the ten. When that held, she played the ]J and when East ducked she claimed nine tricks. It was only worth 26/28 as many pairs bid and made 3NT for 41-13. Those who opted for 4[ were easily defeated by two tricks for 9/45.

Defeating 3NT is trickier - it was managed at only one table by Anna Gulevich and Andrey Gromov. After 1NT-2}* Andrey doubled and when North passed to show a stopper and South jumped to 3NT, this was easily defeated when Anna led the }9 and Andrey ducked it, 21/33. Another declarer in 3NT, faced by a heart lead decided to play safe for eight tricks, assuming that the majority of the field would be going two down in 4[.

Going into the seventh day of the Mixed events I asked one of the players when he was going home. 'Not soon enough!' was his enigmatic reply.

With more medals on the line, it was time to see who was going to make a move.

I'm not sure what to make of the auction. Should South have ventured 3[? Might North have bid 3[ over 3{?

If East starts with a low heart West can win and return the nine, and as long as East wins and does nothing foolish the defenders should prevail. However, East led the ]K and now there was no way to take more than four tricks. +600 was worth 23/31, those playing in 4[ collecting 33/21. Defeating 3NT would have been worth 4/50.

What would you lead?At the table South went with the [7 and declarer

won with dummy's ace, North contributing the four and declarer the five. A heart to the ten saw North follow with the two. It looks right to duck that and win the next heart. North can play the seven, suggesting another spade would be a good idea, when the defenders collect four tricks and 35-19. However, South took the heart immediately and switched to a club, allowing declarer to score an overtrick and 15-39.

Of course, if South leads a boring club, declarer will have to settle for nine tricks.

For the first pair of deals I would watch the current leaders, Norman Selway and Kay Preddy from England.

1{ Hearts

N/S did their duty by coming to rest in a red suit (with 2} a popular final contract down one) and with 2[ making, Preddy did well for her side. When Krasnosselski competed in diamonds rather than clubs, Selway had to decide if 3{ was coming home and if 3[ would be at risk of going for 300. The vulnerability persuaded him to compete and Krasnosselski decided eventually not to double. He led a top club and perhaps should have continued with a low club to retain the tempo. Instead he played king and a third club and all was well when his partner produced a key spade honour and good enough diamonds to set the partscore. That was worth 38/54 for N/S. I suspect 3{ would not have made on a spade lead to the ace and a spade continuation.

Krasnosselski was in the hot seat on deal two...

Board 2. Dealer East. N/S Vul. [ K 10 9 6 ] K J 2 { 10 9 6 } A 6 4 [ 8 7 [ Q J 4 2 ] A 9 8 7 6 3 ] Q 10 5 { J 7 4 { 8 5 2 } K 5 } J 9 8 [ A 5 3 ] 4 { A K Q 3 } Q 10 7 3 2

3]x should go for 800 but who can double for penalty these days? After a low heart lead to the ace and a heart back you could argue that declarer should go up with the king to block the suit (West would surely put in the queen from AQxxxx?). but Krasnosselski had a master plan. He finessed at trick two and won the heart return pitching a diamond and spade from dummy then advanced the }Q. Preddy covered and declarer led a second club up and claimed 10 tricks

when the jack appeared. That was 43/54 from him. This line might

have looked silly were the two club

holdings switched; maybe he relied

on Preddy’s possible suit preference

at trick three in

hearts?

In the second round I would watch Frances Hinden and Graham Osborne take on Ida Gronkvist of Sweden and Adam Grossack of USA. Ida Gronkvist had to fight very hard for any matchpoints at all after losing out in the auction.

Spades plays for at least 110 so the question was whether declarer could make 1NT just to limit the damage. Osborne’s {Q lead drew the {4 (upside-down attitude from Hinden since this could have been a Bath-Coup suit, with declarer holding {AJx). Osborne nonetheless did well to continue with diamonds, declarer discarding [9 on the third. Now Osborne exited passively with [5. Declarer won and played ace and another club, making her first

good guess when she put in dummy’s 10. Hinden won, cashed her diamond then got out with a heart, and Gronkvist put in the jack, to collect her 90 but just 22/54. Hinden/Osborne duplicated their 60+% result on the next deal, making what appeared to be a routine 11 tricks in a vulnerable game on unchallenging defence, but picking up against some untidy declarer play from other tables.

The next two deals were horses of a different colour, each presenting a possible slam in diamonds. One was easy to make but hard to bid, one easy to bid and impossible to make:

Lorenzini’s double of 4] can best be explained by the frivolity of youth; when the auction finished, he looked at me with the expression of someone happy to have avoided a double, but he caught the perfect dummy and claimed at trick one for 50/54MP.

North did extremely well not to look for slam today, with 6{ a respectable spot, doomed by the unlucky lie of the trumps. However 3NT was not exactly a claimer after the spade lead. Declarer elected to duck the first spade and you can now hardly blame East for finding the club shift, but to the ten rather than a low one. Declarer put up the ace, led a diamond to the king and ace (ducking might have worked better) and when a low club came back, he put up the king to lead a diamond to the queen, followed by the {10. East won her jack and returned a low club and declarer after mature reflection put in the seven to bring home nine tricks for 38/54. Not unfortunate, but well guessed.

David Gold found a nice way to get the maximum here, as did Frances Hinden but after a very different and less revealing auction. One of the arts at pairs is to get the opponents to do something silly. So let’s

see how you would do here.I’ll give you the problem Hinden’s opponent faced:Against a blind auction (a strong no trump raised

to three) you lead the }5, second from four small. This goes to the ten jack and king. Declarer leads the heart five to the jack (partner plays the ]3 – Smith Echo would encourage clubs), Declarer comes to hand with the club ace (reverse count six from partner and plays a second heart, the ]7. Would you win or duck?

At the table South thought it would be a sensible move to win as partner followed with the ]9 and clear clubs, waiting to get in with the [K. They are still waiting, since this was the full deal.

[ A 9 7 4 2 ] 9 6 3 { 8 3 } J 7 6 [ J 6 5 [ Q 3 ] K Q J 8 ] 7 5 2 { Q J 2 { A K 10 9 7 } Q 10 2 } A K 8 [ K 10 8 ] A 10 4 { 6 5 4 } 9 5 4 3

David Gold had reached 3NT after showing a game-forcing hand with diamonds. He won the club (10, J A) and led a heart to dummy, a diamond to his 10 and a second heart up, receiving the same misdefence. Apart from the Smith Inferences, partner’s ]9 should scream suit preference for spades, shouldn’t it?

As South you hear partner open a potentially short club and raise your 1] response to two. Clearly you will either make a game try or drive to game. Brigitta Fischer asked for shape and range and moved on over Ola Rimstedt’s response which showed a minimum with four trumps. She received the lead of the [4, to the eight and ace, and the return of the [3. Given that her RHO, an aggressive player, was highly unlikely to have stayed silent with [AQ97x, she went up with the king, and went two down. Kudos to Tom Paske for staying silent and Susanna Gross for managing to avoid leading a club on this auction. One down would have been an average in 4], two down was 5/54.

But as a separate issue, would you have any sympathy with an East who did not drive her hand to game? Facing an 11-13 raise in the context of a 14-17 no trump, maybe at pairs stopping in 3] facing a minimum opener isn’t so unreasonable? Making 3] would have been worth 45 MP.

Fischer/Rimstedt got it back on the next deal when E/W had a delicate decision as to how far to compete.

Board 10. Dealer East. All Vul. [ J 5 4 ] A K Q 6 2 { 4 } Q J 6 4 [ Q 8 7 [ K 9 ] J ] 10 8 7 { A K J 10 8 2 { 9 7 5 3 } 9 7 2 } A K 8 3 [ A 10 6 3 2 ] 9 5 4 3 { Q 6 } 10 5

Gross might have opened 3{, when N/S would have done well to stop in 3], or competed to 4{ over 3], but the vulnerability deterred her. Perhaps a fit-jump from East might have reassured her that her partner’s values were working on offense?

Rimstedt received a top club lead and diamond shift. The defenders took their three minor-suit winners and exited in diamonds. Declarer ruffed, drew trump and stripped off the club winners to reach a four-card ending with three spades and one heart in each hand. At this point he knew East had only two spades and had to have an honour for his cuebid raise so it was easy to get spades right by leading towards the A10. East puts up the king and declarer claimed. 3] making 140 was worth 45/54 MP, while +130 for E/W would have been worth 29/54.

That wasn’t the end of the story of course. On reviewing the results from this deal, my eye was caught by the occasional +750 for E/W. Unlikely as it may seem, you can construct a quite reasonable way to let through 5{x here. Imagine South has shown a mixed raise or spade fit-bid in hearts. You lead a top heart and find partner has four; doesn’t it look quite plausible to shift to spades. Alas! The ]10 is now a threat against you in a heart/club squeeze. Whenever South takes his [A West can ruff a spade in dummy and run his trumps to catch you.

North should work out that if partner has two spade winners he will always take them, even if West can get one pitch on the clubs.HUNGARY

My favourite declarer play of the event so far was produced by Michal Klukowski on the following deal:

Auken stewed over her opening lead for some while. The heart intermediates argued for that suit, but leading from the king was far more attractive than an ace. She eventually decided on a spade. Welland covered dummy’s seven with the nine (might he have ducked to clarify the position?) and Klukowski won his queen and immediately laid down the }K! You could argue that Welland should not have ducked this but it did not seem a bad idea at the time. He won the next club and shifted to diamonds, but it was still very hard for Auken to win that and play hearts. That would have held Klukowski to +90, but after a diamond continuation

declarer could set up the ]K in peace and quiet for +120 and 46/54 MP.

Auken was in the hot seat on my last exhibit:

Welland did well to get his two-suiter across, leaving Klukowski to take the sacrifice which he duly did. 4[x for +300 would have been below average for N/S; 5] down one was just 8/54 MP.

Should North have saved here?I don't think 4[ was going to make here... Wasn't

5] going to lose three tricks in the black suits more often than not since partner had not made a Leaping Michaels call.

As you may all be aware, there is no BBO coverage of the pairs events at this venue. This means that your intrepid reporters have to resort to the archaic method of sitting at the table and make scratches on tablets of wax. This presents an insuperable problem for the remote journalists. I suspect that had David Bird been present he would have been grateful not to have my assignment, as the first two deals were uninspiring 1NT contracts. Board 20 provided some interest when one examined the scores. At one table Brock & Hoftaniska took 3NT down four whereas Gromova & Matushko made plus three – a difference of seven tricks!

North received the apparently helpful lead of the }10, covered by the jack, queen and taken by the king. This highlights the problem of playing pairs. With the club suit now allowing a heart discard after a finesse against the nine, there is no longer the possibility of losing two hearts. The question is how to play the trump suit. Here declarer played ace and king and discovered the bad news of the 4-1 break, so she lost two trumps and the ace of hearts. I believe the textbook method to avoid two trump losers is to cash the ace and then lead towards the

king, finessing if second hand plays low (87.61%). This avoids two losers for all 3-2 and 4-1 breaks, excepting of course the QJxx offside. Nevertheless declarer received 59%.

Returning briefly to those playing in 3NT. On the lead of the ]J, declarer wins in hand with the queen and takes the safety play in spades as mentioned above and when they are cleared West has no heart to continue with and so exits with a diamond. Now when declarer runs off the rest of the spades East is squeezed in hearts and clubs for 12 tricks!!!

2NT transfer to a minor

The defence commenced with the king of diamonds and continued with the ace, ruffed by declarer. To escape for one down, declarer should tackle spades before trumps, but not knowing the 4-0 split awaiting him in the heart suit, he tried the king of hearts. The remainder of the play was not edifying as N/S allowed declarer to escape with nine tricks. Surprisingly this netted 65% for E/W. Many declarers were also playing in hearts but were doubled or failed by more than trick. As per usual, there were some amazing scores with Zimmermann & Ponomareva making 3NT plus one with the N/S cards and another N/S pair playing in 4[X for minus 800.

To whom should we assign blame, if blame needs to be assigned, for missing game? 3NT , 4] and 5{ all make but require reasonable breaks in one or two suits. All of them are less than 50%, so theoretically at pairs one should stay out of game but with a combined 26 count the majority of pairs will be in game (23 out of 28 tables were) so maybe you should bid the game to protect yourself. Playing in the part-score was only worth 27%. Only two N/S pairs recorded a minus score.

A simple auction to a reasonable contract. South commenced with the king of spades and when it was ducked continued with the queen. Dummy took the ace and exited with a spade to South who cashed her ace of diamonds and exited with one. Declarer now tackled trumps by running the jack but still had to lose one trump trick and one to the king of hearts, one down and a 70% to N/S. Again we had some remarkable results, both Farholt & Caspersen and Rimstedt & Shen took 1600 in the N/S seats from 1NTXX and 3NTXX. One wonders what the auction was at those tables.

Shortly after this, the stylus I was using to scratch my tablet went blunt, and so the editor took over my post. Whereupon he could comment on a small slam, immediately followed by a grand slam. Sometimes it is just not your day.

Michal Klukowski found the low trump lead, his best chance to give declarer a problem. Declarer won cheaply in hand and led a heart; Klukowski played low and the king lost to the ace. Zmuda returned a trump and Klukowski played two more rounds of the suit, leaving declarer in hand and led a low heart up. How would you play when West produces the seven.

At the table Cope decided to play West for Q876 of hearts and East for AJ doubleton. So he ducked, planning to let East win. On the club return he would win in dummy and pass the ]10, pitching a club.

But this was the full hand:

Zmuda won her heart eight and returned the club jack, and try as he might declarer still had to lose three more tricks whatever he did for down one.

As Simon said: “You can criticize my judgment in the play but if Michal hadn’t made the best play in perfect tempo, the contract would have rolled home.”

Board 10. Dealer East. All Vul. [ Q 7 6 ] K 8 7 3 { K 9 7 } 4 3 2 [ A [ J 4 3 ] A 6 2 ] Q 10 9 5 4 { 10 5 3 2 { A J 6 } A Q 10 8 6 } J 7 [ K 10 9 8 5 2 ] J { Q 8 4 } K 9 5

INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE PRESS ANNUAL AWARDS

BEST-BID HAND CANDIDATES

The IBPA has now arranged long-term sponsorship to present its annual awards in Sanya, the home of the Hainan Bridge festival. Last year the awards were televised by Chinese National Television, and this will also be the case in the current year.

The presentation takes place on September 29 – the day after the Bermuda Bowl finishes in Wuhan, and all players who are shortlisted (and appropriate journalists) should by now have been informed that they are on the list. But I am pleased that since the shortlist had to be put together a little earlier than usual, we will be able to show all our readers the candidate hands. Barry Rigal

The awards to be presented in Sanya are as follows:

The Yeh Bros Best-Bid Hand

The Gidwani Family Trust Best-Defended Hand

The Keri Klinger Memorial award for Best Played Hand

The Richard Freeman Junior deal of the year

Except for diamond honours, partner has at most a jack. Thus, there is no hope for a trick in clubs. The only chance was in trumps. Zmuda found the only defence to defeat four hearts.

Zmuda cashed the spade ace (Dufrat followed with the four, upside-down signals) and continued with another spade (eight from Dufrat). When declarer took the second spade in hand with the jack and played the ace of trumps and another,

Zmuda won with her king and played one more spade, promoting a trick for the trump jack and setting the contract.

The timing of the Australian Nationals (July 28 – August 9) clashed with the World Youth Teams (August 8-18) and the USA Summer Nationals in Atlanta (July 26-August 5). Liam Milne of Sydney contested the USA Life-Master Pairs, an event of three days duration. He partnered Eivind Grude, a 27-year old Norwegian and an Under-26 world champion. They finished thirteenth out of a field of 336 pairs. This deal from the final was one of their triumphs:

With South prepared for a spade lead, West chose the ten of diamonds for the opening lead. East took the ace and returned the jack. After a little thought, South played low and West followed with the nine. If West had started with the king-ten-nine-to-five diamonds and a certain entry, such as the ace of clubs, West would have followed with a low card at trick two to encourage East to continue the suit.

The diamond nine therefore denied such a holding. East interpreted the message correctly. Logically, the diamond nine must be simultaneously discouraging and showing tolerance for a shift. South’s choice of three notrump was also revealing. Would South have bid three notrump without the ace of clubs? As a spade was out of contention, East switched to a club. Not the two or the ten, which would have been fatal, but the king!

South took the ace of clubs, cashed the king of diamonds and ran dummy’s hearts. The first three discards for East and West were three spades each. On the last heart, East discarded the ten of clubs, and West the five of clubs. Thinking that East had started with the king-queen-ten and had been strip-squeezed down to the spade king-ten and the club queen, declarer exited with the two of clubs from dummy, expecting to endplay East. West promptly claimed the last three tricks for one down.

East/West’s plus 50 scored 99% for a shared top. East/West minus 400 for three notrump making would have been an average board.

The LAVAZZA versus CHAGAS match was dramatic until the last board. In the end, LAVAZZA won by 6 IMPs and made their way to the semifinals. At one of the tables, the Italian team was represented by Dennis Bilde/Giorgio Duboin as North/South while for the CHAGAS team, Marcos Thoma sat West and Pablo Ravenna East.

The following board saw an excellent defence by Ravenna that managed to fool the declarer into going down in a cold contract.

Ravenna led the ace of clubs. After winning the first trick, East shifted to a trump to stop declarer’s potential heart ruffs. Looking at dummy’s nine-eight of spades, he led the two so that declarer could not develop a late entry to the table with the nine of spades. Bilde played the eight of spades, Thoma the queen, and declarer won with his trump ace.

The BBO commentators thought that it looked like minus 590 at this point. However, Bilde continued with a club and Ravenna discarded the eight of hearts. He was still thinking about denying declarer the nine of spades as an entry to the clubs in dummy. Declarer won the trick with the king of clubs. At that point, Bilde believed that Thoma had both of the remaining trumps.

Declarer played another club and, after this play, he could no longer make the contract. When Bilde played dummy’s six of clubs, Thoma played his queen, Bilde ruffed with the seven of spades and Ravenna discarded another heart. Declarer continued with the ace of hearts, ruffed a heart in dummy, and played a club. Thoma ruffed with his four of spades and Bilde threw his last heart loser. Ravenna pitched his last heart too. Thoma returned the king of hearts; Bilde ruffed with the six of spades, but Ravenna now over-ruffed and the diamond trick to come meant one off. That was fantastic defence. Bravo!

Double dummy, there is no legitimate way to beat four spades. After the ace of clubs lead and, say, a spade shift, declarer utilizes the bidding to deduce that West holds all the red high cards and draws trumps, squeeze-endplaying him.
