The Coyote Howler Holy Cross School Message from the Principal As we begin the month of May, we focus on our Blessed Mother, Mary. We thought that the following prayer would be helpful for you to reflect upon during the month of May. Mary, woman of charity, you were always responsive to God’s overshadowing of you. God’s Spirit chose you so that they Word made flesh might live among us. Pray for us Mary, that each of us may trust as you did; that God will also choose us to help hearts receive more fully the Word made flesh; and that He may live and love among us. Mary, woman of charity, you went forth to help, and love flowed through you and gently touched the life of Elizabeth, and the child not yet born. Pray for us, that we too may reach out to the old, the young, the helpless and the strong, so that through us they may experience God’s ever-faithful love. Pray for us Mary that we may open our hearts each day to God’s empowering Spirit, ever living and loving with us. Holy Cross School Mission Statement Our mission at Holy Cross School is to provide quality education for the whole child; to be concerned with each child’s spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth in an atmosphere of faith in Jesus Christ. This growth is realized through the combined effort of the family, the school and the church. Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We - parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff - walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. This week we will celebrate with a school-wide prayer service and other activities in the classrooms. This year’s theme is “Opening Doors of Mercy”. Message from the PrincipalAs we begin the month of May, we focus on our Blessed Mother, Mary.

Holy Cross School Mission Statement

Our mission at Holy Cross School is to provide quality education for the whole child; to be concerned with each child’s spiritual, intellectual,

emotional, physical and social growth in an atmosphere of faith in Jesus Christ. This growth is realized through the combined effort of the family,

the school and the church.

This week we will celebrate with a school-wide prayer service and other activities in

the classrooms. This year’s theme is “Opening Doors of Mercy”.

What do you do when you

get a big pile of snow in

April? Have fun, of course!

We had some friends work

together to make huge

snowballs during recesses.

EQAO

Once again, our students will be taking part in the province wide EQAO assessment. The Junior EQAO assessment will take place during the week of May 25-31 and the Primary assessment will take place June 1-7. If possible, we would ask that you not plan any family excursions or schedule any appointments during this time. It is important that students be in attendance during this time.

YEAR END CELEBRATION

A number of parents have been calling concerning our Year End Celebration. Our Year End mass will take place on Friday, June 24, 2016. The school will celebrate Mass at St. Anthony’s Church at 10:00 a.m. Year End awards will also take place after the Mass. Students will return to school for lunch. Grade 6 students and family members may stay at the Church Hall for Lunch. More information will follow.

“…I also liked when you played In the field Stood a Birch Tree because I got to play the recorder. It was cool watching your conductor Jean-Michel Malouf move his hands. It was all very beautiful. Thank you. - Makenna T.

“…When  you  guys  play  together  it  sounds  like  feeling  is  coming  from  your  instruments.    Singing  with  the  orchestra  was  one  of  my  greatest  experiences.    I  hope  to  see  you  again.”  -‐ Mason  C.

“I loved when you played Come to Play. I appreciate you trying to impress us. You really made the orchestra ROCK! I like when you play together. It sounds harmonized.” - Brianna

Junior students attended a culminating activity at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium called, “Link Up”. This program, funded by Carnegie Hall, provided the students with a colourful resource and opportunity to perform with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. Below are some of the comments that students wrote to members of the TBSO about the experience.

Ms. Balka’s class had the opportunity to work with Pam Cain, an artist from CAHEP (Community Arts and Heritage Education Project). They used the Forest of Reading nominated book “In a Cloud of Dust” by Alma Fullerton as their inspiration to create their own bicycle in clouds of dust. Their artwork will be on display at the Baggage Building at Marina Park for the month of May.
