In the UK class is determined largely by:Occupation and the status that goes with itBackground, education and qualificationsIncomeWealth.Put these four in the order that you perceive to be most influential, and then add other class barometers that you can think of.

The search for a better way of life. The hope of an improved job, career path, higher income and better facilities. Be close to friends and families. Political reasons, freedom from oppression, armed conflict, civil war, natural disasters, religious fundamentalism.

Historical

• Norse, Normans, Huguenots from France 17th century. Irish escaping hunger 19th century. Jews fleeing from pogroms in late 19th century Russia and WW2.

• By 2008 a total of 1 million people had arrived from new EU states to the UK, half have returned.

• Home office estimate that there are 500,000 illegal immigrants in the UK.
